Build Your Own with Pulled Pork and both gravy varieties is my new goto.
Andrew A.

"Build Your Own" is my new goto. Pulled pork, fried egg, cheese (sometimes), both gravy types. Heaven. Their new homemade hot sauce is worthy. Staff is usually very nice. A top 3 Portland spot for sure.

Was visiting from out of town with two friends on a rainy Sunday morning. Parking was, of course, on the street but we had no issue finding a spot in one of the nearby neighborhoods. There was surprisingly no line or wait when we walked in. We ordered at the counter and then sat ourselves. There isn't much seating indoors, maybe 4 or 5 booth tables and additional bar-style seating, so we sat outside which was fully covered and had heaters. I ordered the chicken friend steak with biscuit and mushroom gravy. One friend ordered a biscuit breakfast sandwich (I believe the Reggie) and a homemade red velvet pop tart. The other friend ordered the biscuit with mushroom gravy. Everything was amazing. So flavorful and so comforting. Portions are also pretty big and worth the price. We ended up having to take the pop tart home because we were so full and didn't end up eating it until the following morning but even then it was still delicious. Will definitely be back!

Never disappoints. Great biscuits, flaky and buttery with a nice crunch on the outside. Tried the special, a spicy pimento cheese sandwich with fried chicken, hot honey, jalapeños, and added an egg. A terrific way to kick off the day. Good coffee too. I like the thick mugs that keep it hot.

I've heard good things about this place, so I gave it a try. Firstly, the space is not well organized due to being too small to meet the number of customers. Ordering was a little chaotic, as was getting seated and finding utensils. I'm willing to accept chaos if the food is awesome. Was the food awesome? It bordered on it, but couldn't quite make the leap. It didn't lose its grip, and plummet into the chasm of mediocrity, but it dangled with its legs flailing for a bit. "The Reggie", their basic chicken biscuit, was a bit dry. It really could have used a little bit more gravy. The chicken was good, and the breading was excellent. The biscuit itself was the dry part. There was too much of it for the amount of gravy. Now, I'm not from the South. I've only been dabbling in Southern Cuisine for a few years, so I fully admit that I may be missing the point. The chicken fried steak was decent. Smothered with their delicious gravy with an open faced biscuit on the side, it was the stand out meal at the table. The Wedge is interesting. I may have to order one myself to get more of a taste of it. The brisket was a little tough, though. The fries were decent. The cheesy fries were lackluster (a little cheddar melted in the center), but the Cajun fries had a nice spice, and they weren't afraid to heap it on. While it was not the best chicken and biscuit I've had, it certainly was not the worst, but the chicken fried steak stood out from the rest.

Wow. WOW. WOW! So good. I'd been wanting to go here for over a year, and finally made it yesterday. Amazing biscuits and the most creative and delicious biscuit sandwiches. I can't think of words to adequately describe the McIsley. It's a biscuit sandwich with an amazingly tasty fried chicken breast, stone ground mustard and the best pickles I've ever had. They serve this with a ribbon of honey around the plate and this just put it over the top. My dining companion had the Moneyball - biscuit and gravy, with an over easy egg atop it. They offer a choice of sausage or vegan gravy; they had the sausage and unlike the gravy at some places, you could actually see sausage chunks throughout. Really quick delivery of our food. A very clean, comfortable place. On-street parking only.

Homemade biscuits, tasty toppings, and a fantastic staff! Shoutout to the employee who gave us the free mini sauce containers of pimento and apple jam when we swung by in the afternoon for some extra toppings (we had ordered from them in the morning). Perhaps they just didn't want to deal with the little charge, but it made our day! It took a fork to eat the chicken biscuit with gravy, but I would certainly get any of their dishes again! (We also got the brisket biscuit which was divine!)

Some places serve food. Pine State Biscuits serves comfort. The food here is incredible, filling, and absolutely satisfying. I left very full and very happy. The space is on the smaller side if you're planning to eat inside, and since seating is open, tables can fill up quickly. The staff are attentive and welcoming as soon as you walk up to the counter, which makes the experience smooth even when it's busy. Ordering ahead is a great option, especially if you're grabbing food to go. This is a great spot for family, friends, or a casual brunch date. It may not be traditionally romantic, but when the food speaks to your heart and soul like this... it kind of works anyway. Come hungry, plan to be full, and don't be surprised if you're already thinking about your next visit.

Fluffy cake like biscuit - moist Marion berry pop tart - mmmm puff pastry tart Chicken fried steak legit - not that ground beef Reggie We like the sausage gravy better than the mushroom gravy (but both are solid) We came here hungry and we did indeed divulge! We aren't biscuit snobs so maybe we can't tell what's a "legit" biscuit or not, but the food was good and tasty. Bottom line: would hit this place up again

It's been awhile since I have been to this location. You orders first from the counter and then find a place to sit (similar with the other locations). We just ordered The Reggie Deluxe, Grits, and Hash Ups (add brisket) to shared. I really enjoyed the Hash Ups with the brisket as the meat was super tender that you could cut it with a fork. The Reggie Deluxe was still a classic and tasted like it always does. We were lucky to beat the rush.

Blueberry corn pancakes- so good!

So hungry from an early flight we stopped by after flying into PDX. We called ahead to see if there was much of a wait/ line and was told 10 or so minutes but it was a lot faster than that which was great. Service was very friendly. We shared Make Your Own biscuit sandwich and the blueberry corn pancakes-- very good! The biscuit was delicious and very large. We had two pancakes rather than the three (didn't know this was an option until the employee offered). It was plenty. We had a side sausage. The pancakes were so good! Hot and delicious. They come with syrup and a lemon wedge which really balances out the sweet from the syrup and corn. We sat outside with heat lamps. It was clean and cozy.

Food: 3/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Went here for brunch with a friend, and it was my first time, so I was pretty excited to try it out. The place has both inside and outside seating, and there are plenty of options to choose from on the menu. I ordered the chicken fried steak plate, and woww the portion size was HUGE. The only issue was the gravy to meat ratio it felt so off, and I had to order extra gravy. However, it was $3 for a tiny sauce sized container, which felt a bit ridiculous. We also tried the fried mac n cheese bites ($8). They were super oily, and neither my friend nor I enjoyed them. The beignets ($4) were also a let down they weren't fluffy or soft like I expected. Instead, they were dense and tasted like they had been refried more than once. Would not recommend. Of course, eating here is an indulgent, heavy meal, and I did enjoy the biscuit and gravy a lot. The fried chicken and steak were good at the beginning, but it got a bit tough to eat after a while. The area is really nice for dining and catching up with friends, and I'd be open to coming back to try something different from the menu next time.

Kevin P.

I don't really think much of a place where they're known of biscuit sandwiches but every Yelp recommendation showed this place. Luckily for me and right around the corner was this location and zero wait. The Reggie with sausage gravy--wow. Crispy juicy chicken and my god this was so good. By itself it really is a full meal. Looking around lots of people just ordered the biscuit entree by itself. Where they're missing out though is the has browns! 10/10 for seasonings and flavor! Actually I think I'd come here for those instead. Nevertheless this place must be on your radar for something seemingly so simple but extremely well made. Inside and outside it's just cozy; lots of single seating and picnic table seating for a nice conversation under the beautiful PNW weather.

First off, what a stylish, refined-yet-casual atmosphere. Love the layout of the restaurant; it was bright and spacious. They have a variety of tables and booths for various party sizes, plus outdoor dining! All the staff were smiling, kind, and friendly! Our food and drinks came out very quickly. We ordered a good share of items since we wanted to try a variety of things! From the happy hour menu, we got the Boudin Balls and Romaine Wedge Salad. From their dinner menu, we ordered the Virginia Ham Deviled Eggs (upgraded), Local Fried Green Tomatoes, Yellow Grits, Crawfish Etouffee, and Chicken and Waffles Two Pieces. It was my first time trying most of these things. My favorite app was the fried green tomatoes; they weren't wet, were nicely breaded, and were well seasoned. All the fried items were perfectly fried! The eggs, since we upgraded to trout roe, were very salty. The boudin balls were dense, savory, and meaty--not my personal favorite. I enjoyed trying the grits, but my favorite was the crawfish! It was sweet and savory, the sauce was a good consistency, and the portion was generous. The chicken and waffles were fabulous--I can see why they're popular! I don't normally eat this, but it was the perfect mix of savory and sweet; I loved the sweet potato too! Screen Door is a popular spot in Portland, and I can see why! It's a must-visit for visitors and tourists. You'll find it in the Pearl District, off Couch Street.

I did go for brunch, ordered the "famous" chicken and waffles, and went to the Pearl District location. After following all of the instructions of everyone who swears by Screen Door, I still think it's just mediocre (the one thing I really like here is the catfish). I will say that the Pearl District location is a vibe - the restaurant decor is super cool, and I'd go there daily to grab drinks if I lived nearby. The service is also great, everyone is very kind and attentive. Although the food isn't my jam, I will tell you that it is one of the most popular spots in PDX - if you decide to go, bring some extra cash and shop at the cute stores next door while waiting to be seated. I do recommend going to Screen Door, but do it for the experience, don't expect the best southern food you've ever had.

We shared an order of hush puppies and they were awesome. They were cooked perfectly and tasted very fresh and flavorful. We also tried the calamari which was also good (though it lacked salt overall). My wife got the catfish, and I thought it was very good. Nice texture with the cornmeal crust and had a nice subtle seafood flavor. The sauces were all good and I enjoyed dipping in all of them. Although I did find the remoulade sauce to be a bit bland compared to the other sauces. It was still good though. I enjoyed the mashed potatoes and gravy. They were very rich with a nice texture. The greens were also tasty and cooked well. My friend got the bbq ribs with rice and beans. The rib was nice. Not what I was expecting it to look like, but the bbq sauce was tasty and had some nice smoke taste coming through. The rice and beans were simple and good. I ordered the chicken bacon ranch sandwich. It was very delicious! I was surprised by how much flavor the fried chicken had. I couldn't eat all of it and ended up eating the rest cold for dinner the next day and somehow it tasted even better! All in all we had a great experience. The service was friendly and quick. The space was clean and charming. I loved all of the hot sauce and condiment options. I love this place and will definitely be back.

Watch in-depth video breakdown here…read morehttps://youtu.be/2LsMS2vxzRU?is=U5MfItnpo97tUvuq Dirty Lettuce had me questioning whether I was really in Portland or somehow got transported back down South. I'll admit, I came into this place with a slight bias. I'm from the South, and maybe it's ignorant, but when I hear "soul food," I automatically think of the South. I grew up around soul food. I know what good collard greens taste like. I know what good mac & cheese tastes like. So when I heard people on TikTok raving about a vegan soul food restaurant in Portland, Oregon, part of me was thinking: "Soul food? In Portland? How good could it really be?" Well... Dirty Lettuce shut me up pretty quickly. I originally found this place while searching TikTok for vegan restaurants in Portland. Dirty Lettuce kept coming up, and people especially hyped up the fried chicken and BBQ ribs, so I had to see for myself. I ordered the fried chicken meal with collard greens and mac & cheese -- two sides I take VERY seriously. The fried chicken was incredible. The seasoning and batter reminded me of some kind of combination between KFC and Popeyes, while the inside stayed moist and tender. At certain points I genuinely forgot I was eating vegan chicken. It tasted and felt like I was eating a Southern fried chicken plate somewhere in Mississippi or Alabama. Then came the collard greens. Man... These greens tasted like somebody's grandma was in the kitchen cooking Thanksgiving dinner. They serve them in a bowl with plenty of pot liquor, so initially I thought they might be a little watery. Nope. That broth was PACKED with flavor. It was almost like a collard-green soup, and I mean that as a compliment. The greens and the broth complemented each other perfectly. And the mac & cheese? A1. Creamy, rich, flavorful, with this subtle smoky taste that I wasn't expecting. I don't know exactly what they did to it, but whatever they did -- KEEP DOING IT. I also tried the BBQ ribs. They were good, although they were probably my least favorite item compared with everything else. But that's almost unfair because the chicken, greens and mac & cheese set the bar ridiculously high. I also went into the ribs with huge expectations after hearing people hype them up on TikTok, and I'm not really a ribs guy to begin with. So take my opinion there with a grain of salt. They were still good. My one area for improvement would be customer service. The woman who took my order wasn't rude or anything, but I personally would have appreciated a warmer greeting and more inviting energy. I'm very big on customer service, and I think the person at the front counter sets the tone for the entire experience. Maybe she was just having an off day -- we all have them -- but that was really the only part of my visit that didn't match the quality and energy of the food. The restaurant itself is small, clean and has some really cool artwork on the walls. It has a nice atmosphere without trying to be anything overly fancy. But the FOOD is the story here. At one point during my meal, I remembered that Black people make up a relatively small percentage of Oregon's population, and I became convinced somebody from that percentage had to be back there in that kitchen cooking. Because there was no way these greens were tasting this close to something my grandma would have made on Thanksgiving. I came in skeptical. I left thoroughly impressed. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or eat meat every day of your life, I'd recommend trying Dirty Lettuce. And if you're from the South and you're skeptical about getting legitimate soul food in Portland like I was? Go ahead and try it. It legitimately reminded me of a Southern Sunday plate from somebody's mama's kitchen. Dirty Lettuce proved me wrong -- and I'm glad they did. Highly recommended. Basilisk is another of those Portland restaurants I regularly visited on work trips to the city in…read morethe 2010s. It's been around 7 or 8 years since my last visit but I remember the fried chicken sandwiches coming with two thick, juicy, fried boneless thighs. I found it difficult to eat more than half a sandwich given the size and excess meat. Usually I would end up pulling one thigh out and saving it for later! I decided to visit again on a recent weekend trip to Portland, arriving for an early dinner at around 4:30 PM. It was surprisingly busy, with at least a quarter of the seats taken in the shared seating pool even though it was so early in the day. Luckily there wasn't a line to order and the food came out within 15 minutes. Fried Chicken Sandwich ($13) - Just as how I remembered, this sandwich is still huge with two breaded and fried thighs on a bed of lightly dressed, crunchy cole slaw. It's really tall and doesn't compress well due to the abundant crunchy elements throughout. There's the bun that's heavily toasted until extremely, almost aggressively, crisp and almost dark golden brown, absolutely doused in butter a la Texas toast. There are house pickles on the bottom bun, very quickly pickled such that it develops no acidity, but changes to that crunchy yet soggy pickle texture. The two chicken thighs are expertly breaded until full of crags and valleys, seasoned well, and fried until crisp. The crispy quality is of a lighter variety rather than a hard crunch, very delicate as compared to a typical flour based fried chicken dredge. The chicken is different from what I remembered. Instead of being juicy full thighs, almost an inch thick at the meatiest, these patties are thin, sad, like a single thigh butterflied and cut into fourths width-wise. The breading is far thicker than the chicken itself - in fact the chicken almost is an afterthought here, completely getting lost in all the breading and everything else in the sandwich. Seriously, look at some of the photos from other Yelpers taken in 2016 and 2017 and compare to my cross section photo. It's a huge difference. I bet it's a cost cutting measure and it certainly isn't an appreciated change. Maybe it's just a sign of the times - while the 2010s air waves thumped with 'All About That Bass," the thick thighs have now unfortunately been 2020s Ozempic zapped. The major downside of the sandwich is surprisingly the bun. It's by far the most dominant component of the sandwich. It's the crunchiest element and the butter flavor completely overwhelms the taste buds. This is why fried chicken sandwiches are usually served on soft and pillowy buns, or at least buns that are only lightly toasted, so the bread can focus on and cradle the crunch element rather than supersede it. This is the first time that I can recall a sandwich where the bun is the dominant entity. (3/5) Dandan Fries ($10) - These fries are deceptively filling. They're really snackable and give a distinct moreish quality. It's like a snack where I absentmindedly keep reaching in the bag for more and suddenly it's completely empty. The fries combine a somewhat lightly fried potato, a delicate crisp on the outside and an extremely fluffy almost fall-apart tender inside, with a nutty, spicy, and mouth tingly mala sauce. The sauce is thick, rich, filled with fatty goodness. It's actually a really good glue, adhering the crushed peanuts on the fries so well, nothing falls off while lifting the fries out of the bowl. I especially love the mini cornichons mixed into the fries. They add just a bit of sweetness and acidity that balances so well with the fatty dandan inspired sauce. Without them, I think the dish would feel far too rich. With them, the fries go down the gullet at a quick rate. (5/5) I can't help but feel a little disappointed at Basilisk. It's another one of those places that seems to have decided to sacrifice quality in order to keep prices relatively low. While I enjoyed the Dandan Fries, I'm not sure that's enough of a draw to get me to revisit. Bathrooms - Four unisex rooms shared with the other establishments in the building.
