An exceptional 'boutique' winery out in the wilds of Lampasas and very much worth your time. Pillar Bluff lacks the pretentiousness of other wineries, and is even what I'd call 'homey'! The owner, Gil, was on hand to lead us through a flight of wines (I believe it was $5 for 5 tastings) and he effortlessly charmed us through the entire selection. He's obviously very proud of the work they do at Pillar Bluff, and deservedly so. Of particular note are a very fruity Chenin Blanc and Ruby Port. But the standout is a sweet and crisp Reisling - one of a very few wineries in Hill Country to offer one, and it's excellent! Definitely add this winery to your list if you're willing head off the beaten track between Dripping Springs and Fredericksburg. read more

This little gem of a winery was one of our better finds today! The wine is exceptional and the staff is very acommodating. The whole place is super friendly and the owner Gill was happy to answer our questions about his 20 years in the winemaking industry as we are considering growing a few grapes ourselves. We had such a nice time and I really enjoyed his Sparking Peach wine, Brady and his Riesling but my hubby says the best part was the handmade, piping hot, wood-fired brick oven pizza (they make only on Sundays) paired with a glass of Gill's Merlot! Sooo good! It's a bit of a country drive to get to Pillar Bluff but its worth it! We will be back! read more

I am from Louisiana but hunt out of Lampasas Texas so I stopped by Pillar Bluff Vineyards in Lampasas and bought a Cab and a Merlot. I was very pleased with both and will buy again next time i go to Lampasas. read more

Pulling up to Pillar Bluff's nearly-full unpaved parking lot, we saw a live band, BBQ, and a nice little group of people sitting on picnic tables in a giant outdoor gazebo. Attached to the huge plot of land was a small house, which was where the tasting room was. Their tasting room was pretty small, with a counter and 4 stools. Our hostess was a really pretty, friendly blond lady, who gave everyone nothing but smiles. She did the tastings of 6 wines in order on the list. They had fresh jalapeno goat cheese and sun-dried goat cheese with crackers, complimentary like the wine tasting. We tasted wines such as white Merlot (yes, it was white. It's a specialty they only sell during Xmas), bor doe (yes, they spell it differently than how we do), port, and pinot grigio. Dark chocolate chips were served with the port. :) We did not walk out of there with wine, but our brother in law left with a bottle of white Merlot, which was a very sweet wine. The goat wine was from Bradley Farms, a farm right next to the winery. We went there after wine tasting, to purchase some goat cheese ourselves. :) read more

Such a cute little quant vineyard and winery! We found this spot while doing a wine tour in Fredericksburg and Im sure glad we did. The wine was delicious and the man doing the tour was awesome. So friendly! Also, they told us about the best gold fish recipe ever - spicy ranch hold fish which we now make at home and for parties. read more

Pillar Bluff exceeded our expectations. We didn't think we'd get to visit since we arrived at Texas Legato at 4:30 and closing time is 5pm. The staff at Pillar Bluff were all too happy to have us even though it was 10 minutes until closing time. The wines were tasty and unique. We had a good white port...yes a white port. My favorite wine was a Merlot and I have never bought a Merlot for my own consumption until I visited Pillar Bluff. The three of us settled on one of their white wines to consume outside at the circle gazebo. As we were enjoying our wine, the staff offered us some left over cherry cobbler from a pig roast they had the night before. Keep in mind its well past closing at this point. Pillar Bluff is a wonderful family owned winery that any wine lover must stop in and experience. read more

We love going to this winery! It's casual and welcoming, and Towanda always makes us laugh! The wine is delicious and our out of town friends always enjoy a visit to this winery. My daughter is a Naval Officer stationer overseas and samples wine all over the world. She thought the Ruby Port at Pillar Bluffs was exceptional! While visiting Texas Legato we learned its owner is brother to the Pillar Bluff owner. For this reason we were able to get a tasting on a day that Pillar Bluff is normally closed. We were greeted with warmth as we walked in the door to a comfortable tasting room while the customary "winery dog" made sure we were greeted properly. While relaxing with us, the owner provided the story behind his winery and wines and we found we enjoyed the conversation as much as the tasting. This is much more common in smaller wineries where you get more background and personal attention than you would at a larger, or more corporate, winery. We ended up liking several of their wines as they fit our taste preferences. Although we didn't utilize it, Pillar Bluff has a beautiful gazebo for tasting that looks perfect when the weather is good. Like many Texas wineries, you receive a good value for quality wines. The best part of this is Lampasas is on the route to Fredericksburg from DFW so it is very easy to catch on the trip down or on the return. I recommend this winery stop and, combining it with Texas Legato, you will be happy you did. read more

There aren't many wineries where I like EVERY wine. This is one of the few. Gill is the winemaker, and he is so sweet and personable! It's a really nice place to go relax, spend time with friends and family, and learn about wine! My previous review was in December 2018. I'm saddened to the point of crying nonstop for the review of which I'm about to hit submit. Gill Bledsoe, at Pillar Bluff Winery - Lampasas, has let me down beyond any winery I've ever visited... and I've been to a vast amount. Gill was a phenomenal wine maker. Please note I said "was." He was customer orientated. He took care of his near and dear Cooper Guild members. I've been a Cooper Guild member at least 4 times. Each time, I chose to leave my barrel in Gill's control and just rejoin the membership. I know that a lot has gone wrong recently - Covid, nasty freezes, etc.... but the communication has lacked for far too long. I've always considered myself trying to be there, when he's available, to get the Cooper's Guild Experience. But, it's quite hard to be there when he doesn't return emails or messages. Covid has placed a strain on everyone. Since sending unanswered emails and messages during the holidays in 2020, and now a voice message exactly 96 hours ago - I am forced to hit submit. I haven't heard a word about getting my barrel back or my last 2 cases of wine. (I chose to get my barrel this time because he said the Cooper's Guild was done.) A Cooper's Guild member is supposed to have the luxury of picking any two cases of wine - though he tried to deny that when he won a double gold medal at the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo, and didn't want me to choose. I informed him of what the contract said, and he gave in. This wasn't until after my husband drove, round trip, 5 hours. Once my husband got home, I spoke with him, and sent him back. 5 more hours. We got to exchange the 2nd case when I said this was not the agreement and I really didn't like the 2nd case that was chosen because it was not good. In summation, I rarely leave bad reviews. I don't feel I should be forced to beg for phone contact and/or resolution, for what should be a long standing relationship. I am so disappointed. read more

Pondered upon this place a few wks ago my way back to Dallas. Each sample was awesome. Bought a bottle of Reisling and the Peach Sparkling. Amazing! I also bought a jar of fresh honey....use it in my tea every morning. Can't wait to visit this place again! read more

Five minutes after this wine tasting room was scheduled to close, they opened the door and told us to come right in! Although it is a small tasting room, they are in the process of expanding their seating. They didn't have any fancy decorations or try to come off as pretentious. It was a very welcoming and homey environment. I can understand why this is a popular place. The owner was on hand and kept up a constant stream of small talk. He talked about his wines, his winery, and a lot of utter nonsense. He was an absolute delight! The wines were all exceptional! There were a couple that they were out of as they are quite popular. But it was no problem to have a taste of anything we wanted. It is off the beaten path, but it is well worth the drive. read more

Came to this winery as part of the wine trail not knowing what to expect but were blown away by the hospitality. Sharon and Towanda are such amazing people not only was the wine delicious (make sure you have the petite syrah) but could not have asked for better company. Please go to this winery even if you don't like Wine and just sit and talk with Sharon! She is an incredible woman that will blow you away with her exceptional conversation. I could have stayed there all evening talking with her. Not only was the conversation amazing but they both took such good care of us... From providing waters to amazing snack crackers without us asking and even calling to the next winery we wanted to visit to make sure they were still open, we couldn't have asked for a better experience! read more

Since my last review they've added a lovely outdoor pavilion with plenty of seating that overlooks the lovely Texas hill country; it is the perfect place to continue enjoying their wine by the glass or they will uncork a bottle for you. As with my first visit, the staff is very welcoming and friendly. Their red wines (merlot and cab) have developed nicely and continue to impress. read more

My favorite of the four wineries I visited yesterday. I loved the outdoor seating, the staff was great, and the petite Syrah was delicious!

All I can say about this family run, easy going winery is that it is fabulous and worth the drive! The wine is fantastic and each bottle of of wine is filled, corked, and labeled by hand! Any wine here is great and be sure to ask the winery owner (who is almost always on site...) for a personalized barrel tasting and the chance to own your own barrel in the Coopers Guild program! Very nice place. The server/vine planter & picker/wine maker and custodian on Thursdays, Gill, was charming, sweet and very knowledgeable. He gave excellent descriptions and suggestions for food pairings. Wines were quite good, but I am not sure that $80 for their award winning Petite Syrah is worth that price. Other wines were in a much more reasonable price range, and the fact that they also come to the Georgetown Farmer's Market means that Austinites don't have to travel all of the way to Lampasas to enjoy their wines. read more
