Point 5 Liquor Store

If it helps, you can imagine that I am speaking this review in Jim Lahey's drunken slurred speech…read more Sorry perfect beautiful liquor but this LC does not deserve you. The LC (liquor store for you non-Nova Scotians) provides the beautiful liquor so you too can become the liquor. Since I did not "pack ahead" for a road trip that I had to leave on in short notice I inquired with the front desk at my hotel where the nearest LC was - in retrospect I should have asked for the best liquor store in town rather than the nearest since the hotel itself was not exactly in the best area to begin with, unless you were in the mood for visiting two toothless hookers with a meal at the Dennys in between as your idea of a good time without even leaving the parking lot. The front desk of the hotel sent me here. It is a small store but I am not a size queen. I walked in and the liquor was haphazardly categorized in a bizarre fashion, like the motif for decorating was just "let's throw this stuff anywhere, not like it matters." I had to make a loop around the store to get my bearings first. Everything was very overpriced and the selection was abysmal. I have my preferences and I did not see a single thing I wanted or would have considered a fun find at a small town LC, but I was not going to do this thing as sober as a 12.9 year old so I had to gussy up and buy something for the hotel room. The second loop around the store I was in the zone to know I was looking for the least overpriced thing and looking for quality was out of the window, this was just a utility purchase where anything would do. Meanwhile the cashier was chatting with two friends and literally did not even look up once as I am wandering around the store for five minutes. Not that she could have helped much since they had no Irish whiskey section to speak of and the bourbon section was not worth writing home about, but clearly customer service came second to chatting with her homeys. The selection was supremely disappointing and a 750ml of Canadian Club was nearly $16 with tax which is a huge mark up for the convenience of visiting this dark, dingy store on the wrong side of the tracks with zero customer service just to get some hooch without driving all over town to find another LC. Army boys are getting taken advantage of if they visit here for the party liquors near their base. Having visited more chair force bases in my time than army, the LCs near the chair force bases are always quality because they know flyboy lips are best used for three things and one of them is downing Jim Lahey sized bottles of dark liquors. If you are visiting town in a hotel nearby ask your front desk for the BEST LC in town, not the nearest.

My girlfriend and I recently moved to the area but have been looking at home brewing for a while…read more We decided to go to the Harker Heights Wine and Beer festival a couple of months ago and came upon Black Hawk Brewing Supply, which was doing a brewing demonstration. We picked up some information about them that day. A few weeks later we decided to go check it out. When we got there, we were helped immediately. Even though we were complete newbies, they explained everything to us, answered all of our questions, and really made us feel welcome. We bought a startup kit, some bottles, and a beer kit. Since then my girlfriend and I have been in there a quite a few times. Every time, our questions are answered and we are helped with what we need. They even have their own recipes for beer that they will give you. They will even help you figure out what grains you need depending on the method of brewing you will be doing and the recipe. The owners run the shop and they are extremely knowledgeable. Their prices are reasonable and they even have wine making supplies. We haven't delved into that realm yet though. Maybe eventually, but for now, just beer. They even have these cool little cheese making kits there if you want to do that. Last weekend we went in and decided we wanted to do a partial mash based on a recipe they had. We were helped all the way through from having the grains ground and put together for us, to the kind of malt extract, hops, and yeast we were supposed to use. It was all explained to us too so that we would understand it. We went that night and brewed our beer. It is now fermenting successfully. Looks like so far we did it right! This is actually the very first time that I have written a review on a company because I was so happy with it. If you are looking into getting into home brewing, check these guys out. It's a small shop but they will have what you need. Very honest people too. I have actually been talked out of buying some things I didn't need. They don't pressure you into buying anything, which is one thing I dislike about going into some businesses.
