As I arrived to this small and intimate restaurant I could see that it was completely packed. Wishing on a prayer there would be room, the hostess asked if I'd like to sit at the bar. I said yes right away and was swept there. The only seat open was at the end of the bar, but you are in the middle of the restaurant and the kitchen so it's a perfect spot to be able to see everything. After some time glancing at the menu I decided that the steak frittes and cab wine would be my order. As I waited I saw other items that immediately caught my eye and the burger was one of them. Mental note to come back and order that. When my meal arrived it was a generous portion and delicious. I enjoyed every minute of eating slowly, people watching and enjoying the ambiance of this place. It's reminiscent of a SF or NY hidden gem place but with a relaxed feel. Everything was great. Absolutely delicious and something I will 100% be ordering again! We were a little disappointed that they didn't have mignonette for the oysters, but honestly, the oysters were still completely delicious! By the time we were ready to order another dozen, we were told they were sold out. But honestly, I wasn't surprised--the restaurant was packed and it seemed like every table was enjoying those $1 oysters! Our server was very sweet , although the service was a little slow. I'm guessing that had a lot to do with how busy the restaurant was that evening. Oyster lovers, take my advice: Order more than a dozen right away! And I thought I would have to give up on my desire to pop back in to The Ruck for a pint. On the way back to my hotel, I decided to just check to see what Dave and crew had on tap. Egads! Seriously folks, this bar is an embarrassment of riches. I only wanted to have one beer, but I left with three. Two I enjoyed on site, Hill Farmstead's Susan and the brewery's Society and Solitude #13. These are heavy hitters, and even just two five ounce pours put me in a place where I felt it would be imprudent to have a third. Fortunately for me, the crowler machine was fully functional, and I was able to grab an oil can of Weldwerks Xtra Xtra Broccolli to go. Beer names are stupid, but they will not dissuade me from drinking something delicious. Sadly, Dave wasn't there, so I didn't get to say hi, or shake his hand, or thank him for his hard work of managing such an epic tap list. Regrettably I rolled in late in the evening and the kitchen had already closed. No wings for me. Not even one of their special deviled eggs... which sounded delicious, btw. The Bacon wrapped dates (that include some chorizo) were sweet and savory - just as expected. They are drizzled in honey with plenty left over on the plate for additional slathering. The brie is almost like a dessert - the brown butter whiskey sauce is super sweet. The walnuts add a nice crunchy texture and the bread was served hot. We started with the rosemary cashews and a couple of glasses of red wine (Malbec...from the tap!). The chicken pot pie sealed the deal. I thought it was excellent, but if you are not into black pepper, this might not be the right choice for you. Very peppery pot pie (say that three times fast!) with big chunks of white meat chicken and veggies without excessive creamy richness. A kimmelweck (or kummelweck) roll is a crunchy, Kaiser-type bread roll topped with coarse salt and aromatic caraway seeds, primarily known for defining the Buffalo, New York, "beef on weck" sandwich. Originating from 19th-century German immigrant traditions, they are usually filled with roast beef and soaked in au jus. The sandwich was loaded with juicy flavorful roast beef. The bun had caraway seeds and coarse salt all over the top of it which complimented the beef deliciously. It also had a horseradish sauce on the sandwich, so good. It was served with tasty fries and two little cups of au jus. I would definitely order this again.
