Love this store that has been around for over 50 years and has a very wide selection of many hard to find items. Very friendly staff. I needed a range hood and stopped at a Home Depot in Ukiah on my way back from S.F. I was surprised to find only two or three hoods in stock. I purchased a Broan and a week later, when shopping at Piersons, I not only found the same hood for the same price as Home Depot but the one at Piersons had more features! (e.g. Variable speed fan, two brightness light). So this myth that HD is 1/3 cheaper than Piersons is bull. Plus, Piersons had a much larger selection IN STOCK. Granted, HD's web is great if you want to wait over a week and pay shipping. I will always check Piersons first. read more

The best thing about Pierson's is the big hammer. Once you pass that, it is all down hill. Service is spotty at best, It is like the employees see a customer looking at something on a shelf and they go out of their way to go to another ilea where there is no one. My wife went in to buy some boards for our fence, the guys where happy to show her where the fencing lumber is, but when it can time she asked if someone could help her load it with her. Both guys that where busy hitting on her all the sudden had something to do. If you have time to BS with her, then you have time to help her load 24 pieces of lumber. All in all, we only go there because it is pretty much the only thing in town. Closer then ACE and there are not much better. Everyone in Pierson's should have customer service training, very little goes a long way. read more

Love this place. I always get help regardless if I am looking for a led light replacement, to garden material or plumbing. Great to have so much in one location. And I always pick up a big hammer dog bone cookie for visit to friends with dogs. The dogs love to see me visiting. read more

I've been going to Pierson's for decades and I am never disappointed. I get help and advice when I need it from nice people who know what they are talking about. I rarely have trouble getting a sales floor person's attention, and when they are too busy, I can always find help at the Customer Service desk. As a woman, I appreciate the fact that the male employees I've dealt with have never treated me as somehow less knowledgeable, comprehending, or competent than a man. Their prices are reasonable--inexpensive on some things, higher in others, but that is how it goes with indie businesses. They nearly always have what I'm looking for. I don't have to worry about getting cheap knockoffs of things like Derwent tools (can't say that about America's big box home store...you know who I mean). The garden center people actually have horticulture knowledge. I love the ambience--it feels like an old-timey hardware store in spite of its size. There are so many interesting and tempting things in there, I could easily blow a paycheck on impulse buys! For those that are disappointed by their paint, well, there are other hardware and paint stores in the area that sell different brands, so go there. If you want yard machinery, and are upset because Pierson's doesn't sell any, go to Miller Farms in McKinleyville--they do sale and service on huge selection of yard machinery. Those people who are slavering to get a Home Depot in Humboldt just don't know what it means to have places like Pierson's, Miller Farms, Mad River Gardens, Thomas Home Center, and the locally owned Ace franchises around. This is your community, these indie owners are your neighbors, so you should support them. I had to move away from my dear Humboldt and now I have to deal with Home Depot. Not satisfactory at all. I really like going to Pierson's. The prices are often a little higher than elsewhere, but most staff members are really helpful and have been there a long time. Their sales (especially their parking lot sales) are awesome and usually really busy! If you are into gardening their garden center is great. I even bring my little ones to look at the pond there for some fun! read more

I was a journey machinist at the shipyards for 9 years or so, and in fact, a marine machinist. Which has absolutely nothing that I recall to do with home plumbing, although it sure seems like it should. If I ever need to take a 6" butterfly valve out of some sub-floor section of my house-no problem. BUT, when it comes to bathroom tub/shower diverter and H/C stems (cartridges) I now know who to call, and her name is "A.J." This woman is as or more knowledgeable than 95% of the glazed-eye donks driving around with plumbing signs on their beater station wagons! A.J. knows the parts, how they go together, and what fits with what, and what substitutions can be made. I'm talkin' a real artist in the field of plumbing. So, next time you're wondering if you have your eyes on the right replacement part,, or if "A" really goes to "B" like the illustration shows, drop in to see A.J. or give a call. I was a tourist staying in Eureka in May 2016 when I stumbled across Pierson's. It is a very extensive operation with a broad inventory of home hardware and building and gardening supplies. Merchandise is well-displayed. I'd guess it is on 5 acres or more. Absolutely surprising for a city the size of Eureka. The staff I ran into was most helpful. This is not a discount store. I spent $75 finding things I couldn't find elsewhere, knowing I would have to lug my purchases with me until I got back home (600 miles away), Certainly worth a stop if you have the tine, I , I spent a good 45 minutes wandering around the store. It's an absorbing I also stopped in the Ace Hardware store in McKinleyville, about 15 miles north of Piersons on US 101. It is not nearly the size of Pierson's. read more

I quit shopping there because every time I went in there most of the people helping me didn't understand what I was talking about . Then they go into this what are you doing with it mode and when I tell them; they want to tell you how to do the job ( when most of them don't know how to do the job either) I've got forty years in home improvement and contracting with a good skill reputation and I've never seen anything like it . Before I moved here 28 years ago I could order all of my daily materials for jobs from a pay phone over breakfast and have them there exactly as I asked. In dealing with Pierson's for nearly 24 years; I haven't been able to call them once and not have them foul up a phone order. In dealing with Pierson's the help also wants to tell you how to do the work rather than tell you what the products you want to buy will do . It always seems to be this argument deal when you go in there and a waste of time but they monopolize hardware in this area and this is what you have. Pierson's also says their help knows about construction but for the most part they don't. Like a lot of other builders around here I've straightened out plenty of messes that were made by Pierson employees who claimed to know construction . read more

I like Pierson's Building Center most of the staff seems fairly knowledgeable, and their prices are fairly competitive. I just wish the staff was willing to admit when they don't know the answer to a question. I don't know, I'll go find out. I'd be happy with that answer, but more often than not when they don't know the answer to a question, they'll just make one up. 3 days ago I went in and bought a light fixture, I asked the one of the sales people if the fixture I was looking at would fit a 13 watt CFL, they told me in no uncertain terms that it would. The fixture did not not fit a 13 Watt CFL the bulb was too long, it would not even fit a 10 watt CFL the smallest CFL available. On one occasion I was looking to buy a replacement handle for my Vaughan framing hammer I had the right handle in my hand, one of the staff told me that handle was too small, I bought the handle they suggested, and as a result of trying to force a handle that was too large to fit my 35 dollar framing hammer is ruined. Yesterday I was in looking for a 4 1/2 inch sanding disc, the only sanding discs I could find were the 4 inch and the 5 inch. A member of the staff told me that it was better to use a 5 inch disc on a 4 1/2 inch sander even though the manual recommenced 4 1/2 discs. The 5 inch discs curdled up on the edges and gouged into my trim, I was able to get my money back on the sanding discs and buy the correct size from ace, but I was still out the time and materials it took to repair the damages from using the 5 inch discs recommend by the piersons sales associate. Be careful with the advice you receive from the staff at Pierson's. Many members of the staff know what they are talking about, but some have no clue, and will just make up want ever answer they think you want to hear. read more
