I have been coming to Eureka/Humboldt County for about 35 years, and I finally saw a sign for this space. So glad we came! It was moist day when we visited, and the mosquitoes were annoying, but that's part of the territory. It was a beautiful space to explore, and the walking pathways were also some good exercise for us old folks (around 50, ahem). But the beauty was nice, with plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the views when needed. We even bought some merch at the small little gateway "store" to support the cause. Will always come back here now, every visit to the area. Thank you! read more

A nice spot to come and enjoy some beauty in nature. Make sure to hike the trails but also be sure to utilize the bug spray at ticket counter. They were brutal. Went to the maze art install which was nice. read more

Absolutely beautiful gardens. The woman who worked the entrance was very welcoming and funny. I forgot her name. She had a little dog with her. Everyone that we encountered at the gardens were very friendly. The price was reasonable. When I go back to Eureka I will definitely go back. read more

Delightful visit! Exploring our new neighborhood my husband and I ventured to the Botanical Gardens. The entrance was a little hard to find but could just be because it's not obvious. There's a gravel parking lot with two big wrought iron gates at one end. That's the entrance. Kudos to the gardens for giving a discount for locals with ID. I'll very much be returning because it's a beautiful walk through the gardens and very peaceful. Lots of opportunities to practice amateur photography. There are newer gardens where flowers are kept trim and tight, and there are wooded areas and historical things to explore as well. It's dog friendly so long as your dog is well behaved and on a leash (and you clean up after it, of course)... so kudos for that! The only downside here (I guess it depends on the day) are the mosquitos. Luckily the front booth has bug spray (not sure if that is all the time, so bring your own just in case it's a warm day and the buggies are out). If you're in the area. Stop by, enjoy the peacefulness of the surroundings. Plenty of areas to sit or meditate too. read more

I really like botanical gardens so this is my thing. It's $10 an adult to get in which I don't think is too bad. There are some steep elevation changes. Unfortunately working from home has taken a toll on my wife and about half through I wasn't sure she was going to make it back to the entrance without help. We didn't get past what I think was called the Moss Family garden. read more

These beautiful botanical gardens located on the south end of the Humboldt bay, on Tompkins Hill Road, are another one of nature's gems that make living behind the Redwood Curtain the cool place that it is. A 48 acre blend of mother nature's world in the hands of gifted stewards of the earth. There are maintained pathways with signage that runs throughout the gardens and it's a relatively easy to moderate walk to reach most all of the spots within the property. Spectacular gardens! The paths in the lower garden are very accessible and well maintained. The woodland paths are also well maintained and well marked, not accessible but makes for a great adventure with children. Dogs are allowed on leash for an additional fee! There are also plants available for purchase for the ultimate souvenir! read more

What a lovely place and equally lovely the couple of folks we met that work there on the 4th of July weekend. I am a fan of visiting gardens and I was very happy to see that Humboldt had a garden of its own. If you are into very manicured places not sure this will please you all that well but if you like nature more organic gardens then you'll leave happy. Be ready to do some walking and to get to some sections there will be some uphill but nothing overly vigorous -- maybe take some water with you. I will be back and interested to check out their classes and workshops. FYI Yelpers: If you search for the HBG, the first thing that comes up is their foundation which is located in Old Town. Make sure you get direction to 7707 Tompkins Hill Road, Eureka. read more

Very beautiful and a few nice trails that venture a little ways out. I would have given this 5 stars, except for one thing: There are more mosquitos on the trails here than anywhere I've been in my entire life, and it's not even close. They should warn you before going in and perhaps even sell repellant. Thank goodness we were wearing long pants and long sleeves or we would have been eaten alive. It's that bad! If you come prepared, you can have a great time! read more

I came here to kill some time before my tour of HSU and it was way better than expected. My family thought it would take at most 30 minutes to complete but you could easily spend hours there. Would highly recommend. read more

Humboldt Botanical Gardens have only been open for a year, and they have accomplished a great deal in a very short time. There are paths and signage, vista points, a greenhouse. This is a great opportunity to see the local flora, such as wild cucumber. They have an impressive 48 acres of space.bring a camera, there are some stunning blooms. read more

This is a wonderful garden and well worth the visit. If, like us, you are into visiting gardens where ever you go, this is one of the best to join as it offers the best value. Once you join, you can enter dozens of other gardens around the nation for free! The garden is gorgeous. There is a longer hike to the labyrinth, which I've done in the past and is beautiful, and is a bit more strenuous. Today I took the dog, so I stayed in the gardens as she's not up for the longer, steeper walk. The only thing I don't understand is they don't want dogs on the grass. Admittance for a dog is $5 (or $20/year), so if you're forking over money, you're more likely to be a responsible dog owner (ie, one who will scoop-a da poop-a). Please let the dogs on the grass!! The volunteers are helpful. The only negative in my mind is the bathrooms are portapotties. Blech. They do have a hand washing station, but flush toilets are just civilized. Still. They made an attempt with the butterfly garden, but honestly, it's not terribly impressive. If you're going solely for that, you may be disappointed. But the flowers and the garden itself is well worth the visit. read more

This place is beautiful. However they are not ADA Accessible. It's gravel all around. You can't ride a scooter or it's hard to push a wheelchair. It's 2021. It's time for them to upgrade to be more accessible for ADA. read more

History

Established in 1991.

The Gardens are constructed on a 44.5 -acre site south of Eureka near the Humboldt Bay adjacent to the College of the Redwoods. Funding, construction and administration of the Humboldt Botanical Garden is under the leadership and sponsorship of the Humboldt Botanical Garden or HBG. HBG was organized by a small group of Volunteers in 1991. The goal was to create an educational botanical garden in for the Northern region. From this small core people, the HBG has grown to over 1,000 individual, family and business members. Thousands of people attend the organization's annual educational and special events. From the initial desire to have several small botanical gardens in the Humboldt Region, the vision grew to encompass the passionate belief that the area had an opportunity to develop a world-class botanical garden.

Years ago, I was treated rudely at Shaffer's Ace in Henderson Center by older men rather consistently. Since then, I refused to ever go there again, even though it was a block away from our house. Pierson's was like night and day, in their customer service. We live further away from Pierson's now, but it is still worth the easy drive during the week between 2 and 3 p.m. and we know the back roads. If time allows, I love meandering around in the garden area after I buy my supplies. One lovely afternoon, I even got to pet the garden cat sleeping up on an empty flower crate out back. Years ago, maybe 2004, I took my plans, measurements, and idea to build a cat door in a window. In the lumber department out back, they found me some scrap wood. Then I got the proper brackets inside the main building. In there, a nice gentlemen helped me figure out what bracket I needed AND he used his electric screwdriver to attach the brackets to the wood for me. Wish I got their names to tell the manager how much I appreciated their help. Never will I forget those guys going the extra mile for me, inexperienced in these things just having an idea. My measurements were correct and between the Pierson's lumber out back and bracket, screws, and nail area in front, they literally helped me build a cat door/window. It went under a window that opened upward and worked very well, with a table to jump on to get up and down for short excursions, then home to eat as I battened down the hatches. Many years later, that precious little mouser cat crossed the Rainbow bridge. She is buried under that beautiful flowering tree right outside where her cat window used to be.

Fox Farm's Ocean Forest is a soil that combines naturally occurring nutrients along with the best from our oceans. This is a light, airy soil that allows for great root growth, proper drainage and great growth during a plant's vegetative phase. Ocean Forest consists of "forest humus, Spaghnum peat, bat guano, fish, crab, shrimp and Norwegian kelp meals, premium earthworm castings and oyster shells to ensure a balanced pH." Apparently the only plant that can pass into our intestines and still reproduce is the tomato seed. It was quite the sight to see. Many small plants were growing in what looked like a cross between a small green house and a gated barn. Surprisingly it didn't smell terrible outside. I do want to warn people from going to late in this marsh people not only can you run into interesting folks but also interesting bugs, critters and animals the darker it becomes. Friendly and knowledgable volunteer staff greet you and can help you plan your trip. Stop by after your walk and report what you saw on the whiteboard. Take a load off and use the binocs to capture a 'life' bird siting. The gift shop has ultra cool stamps, stickers, tshirts and hats. Along with local natural history guides. The architecture itself is something to behold. Do not miss this!

Definitely be sure you go for a hike in the dunes, they have heaps of markers so you can find your way back. The wildflower are beautiful and you can see lots of wildlife especially if you're quiet. Plus there's a lovely beach and if it warm.....jump in!! Anyway, it's a must visit, great for kids and it's free unless you want to make a donation.

Nice visit at the garden [Eureka CA]…read more Just outside the zoo's northern perimeter is the Sequoia Park Garden on W Street. Street parking is available just outside of the entrance. The forecast was partly cloudy in the mid 50's. The garden isn't very big but I enjoyed the variety of flowers that were in bloom which is generally between May and September. Our visit was during the Memorial Day weekend. Took some time taking lots of photos of the colorful blooms including a collection of gorgeous dahlias... wish they had labels for all the flowers for us who are botanically illiterate. Flowers are beautiful subjects for photography that's why I love botanical gardens. The garden also featured a wishing well and a gazebo for small gatherings and events and, also, a small sundial, unfortunately, there was no sun at that time to tell the time of day ツ Sadly, we weren't able to go across to the park. I liked the open grassy meadow and the duck pond. There was a sitting area to rest and take a break, and a playground. The tall trees and serene surroundings makes this place magical. Definitely wants me to return and explore more.
