We walked into the store looking for two sets of ice skates for occasional outdoor and indoor use with very limited knowledge of what exactly we needed. We were greeted by Mr. Morrisette (forgot his first name and I hope I spelled the last name correctly) who we explained our situation to. Mr. Morrisette knew exactly what we needed and immediately started sizing up our feet for skates. After trying on a few pairs we were both fit to a great set of skates! First of all... They mounted my bindings 2 cm of from each other. I then called to see if they would do a ski boot heat mold and re-adjust my bindings to a new boot I had ordered, they declined and said "ahhhhhh ya no we don't touch boots purchased elsewhere" with the most snarky attitude. I just spent how much money at your shop on skis, tuning, and binding mount? 0 out of 5 stars. Worst ski shop experience I have ever had to deal with and one of the worst business experiences I have ever had. Probably one of the worst businesses I have ever had to deal with in retail. I went to hoigaards and had everything done for 100 bucks. Boot molding, ski tune, and binding mount for new boots. What a great shop with amazing customer service. The guy I was sitting next to was there for the same reason! This shop will NOT service you if you did not do business with them, I had spent over 100 their and they can't even do a heat mold or adjustment they messed up on. Sad. Stay far away. read more

Run away from this shop! I'm an adult figure skater, average build. Got my first pair of recreational skates (Jackson Mystiques) here, not knowing anything about properly fitting skates. After a few months, I'd progressed to Basic 4 in them, but was having foot problems. I'd done some research online and realized that my Jacksons were way too big for my feet (e.g. I had a bunch of extra space in front of my toes). I went in to get fitted for higher level boots and the manager (Ted Petroskey) tried to upsell me from my $150 beginner Jacksons to a pair of $1,500 custom made carbon fiber Auras - an obscene jump in booting and price for someone at my level. Ted trash-talked every boot brand in existence. He lamented that the quality of SP-Teri boots had greatly declined and that he wasn't selling them to skaters anymore. He claimed that Riedell boots were not sturdy enough and would break down in just months. He claimed that Jackson and Risport boots were not a great choice because they're "hard to get". When I asked about Edeas, he claimed that they refuse to sell them because too many skaters injure themselves in them. The only option I was presented with was to shell out $1,500 for a pair of Auras. I left the shop without purchasing the Auras to do more research. After doing some more research, I got fitted by another shop for a pair of Edea Chorus boots. It took me some time to get used to the "wobbliness" of them, but after awhile I started progressing again. Although I was advancing in the Edeas, it was clear that they were still not quite the right fit for my feet, as they were causing me arch pain and I found myself still hating the wobbliness of them. I decided it was time to try something different. I decided against my better judgement to give Pierce Skate & Ski another try. I booked a fitting with Jessica. She measured my feet and put me in a Jackson size 11 (a full size smaller than they sold me before!) or a Risport 295C, though she recommended against the Risports because my feet were too wide. I inquired about ordering in Jacksons, but she told me that because Jackson was recently acquired by another company, they wouldn't be able to place an order. When I pressed about trying Risports, she said they wouldn't order those either because she didn't believe they'd be a good fit. She mentioned that Aura now had stock boots on offer for less. I was very frustrated and left the shop, determined not to return again. It was very clear that they were pushing Auras hard, regardless of their customers' needs. At this point I was fed up with Pierce and decided to start buying boots online and fitting them myself. I'd done enough research to know what to look for in a good fit. After some trial and error, I eventually ended up in a Risport 300C, which fit like a glove. My only problem now was that I still needed to have blades mounted on them. Several months had passed since the last time I'd dealt with Pierce Skate & Ski. Because they are the only shop in my area that sells Risports, I reluctantly called them up to book an appointment to have blades mounted. Ted answered the phone. I asked if I could make an appointment to have blades mounted on a pair of boots that I'd purchased. He asked if I'd purchased them at his shop, to which I responded that I hadn't. He flat out told me, "no, I can't help you". No explanation or anything, just, "no". Unbelievable. I'm utterly shocked and appalled by the service and dishonesty of this shop. Not only did the originally put me in ill-fitting skates, but on two separate occasions they intentionally tried to mislead me away from other viable boot brands so that I would purchase Auras. I'm sure they get some kind of kickback from the manufacturer for selling their boots. To top it all off, they refused to mount blades (that I would've purchased from them) on my Risport boots because I purchased them elsewhere. I'd leave 0/5 stars if I could. Pierce is a step above any other options in the Twin Cities and most nationally in equipment expertise, boot fitting, and tuning. Worst customer experience I have had in years! I was there in the middle of the day, I was their only customer and the sales person was condescending, rude and appeared to want me out rather than sell me anything. I have worked at REI, Gander and several others over the last 25 yrs. I would NEVER treat someone they way I was treated. Rather than asking questions about the "Fit" of my skate, he was more interested in telling me why his measuring was "Right", why I needed a size 10, when I really need a 11 or 11.5. 1 side note, rather than telling me to sit down when measuring my foot size; maybe have me stand (like when I am skating) to see my actual size when arch is stretched out! I just read all of the positive reviews for Pierce skate. None of these reviewers must have come in five minutes before close! I actually called ahead of time to apologize and say that we would be there just before close and having worked in retail myself, I know that it is frowned upon but, we will be quick. As I stated on the phone, we arrived at five minutes to close (5:25) to have the skate fit checked on my two-year-old and my five-year-old- who did need to go one size up from her current skates. We were treated so incredibly rudely. There were comments like, "well you have exactly five minutes what do you need" and "gee, were open 50 hours a week I guess we can't accommodate everybody"- with a heavy sigh and a stomp off to the back room. The employees actually rolled their eyes as I was paying! I apologized again for arriving just before close. There was no response to my apology, just another dirty look. We actually paid and were out of the store by 5:34. Yes, all that drama for 4 minutes late!! Having two small children who skate, we have a lifetime skating purchases ahead of us which I will take elsewhere. I have been a repeat customer for 3 years here and had the worst experience with Ted the "skating whisperer ". It all started when I picked up my daughters skates after they were mounted. They had a dent like a bench press was heated down on them I had to wait a week before they would see us. When we got there we were 1 minute early and Ted got snippy with us asking how we got in. It went down hill from there. Ted refused to replace the skate or fit my daughter with some new skate he said " how do I know you won't bring those back too" in a very derogatory voice. I recently brought my ski boot here after experiencing extreme pain in a specific spot on my right foot. Turns out the pain was related to pressure the boot was putting on an old fracture calcification. Pierce was able to punch out the area that was painful, presto chango I now have dare I say ski boots that are actually comfortable. Their expertise and helpfulness is the best I've experienced. So often companies will overcharge for inadequately fixing problems or try to sell you all new equipment altogether. Pierce instead works with you and the equipment that you already have, They do their best to ensure that you get the most out of your gear whether that's on a hill in Minnesota or a mountain out west. My husband bought new boots and had Dave do a fitting on them. Outstanding job! This was his third pair of boots and her has unusually big feet. All his boots have been uncomfortable and ill fitting. Swollen sore feet etc. Did a trip to Whistler after Dave did a new fitting. My husband had the most comfortable boots to date! No black and blue swollen feet! We also had both our old skiis tuned up. I bought figure skates there a couple of months ago. I was sold the correct skates but they did a very poor job of sharpening them. I had to have it redone immediately, elsewhere. I went back there about a week ago to have the skates fitted properly. I have some pronation issues, as well as arch issues. I was told to make an appointment because the fitting session would take a while, with a lot of measuring to do etc. The guy there showed me the box of all the different wedges they can add to the boot to get a good fit. When I went for the appointment, he spent about six (6) or eight (8) minutes with me, fitted me with some off the shelf arch supports and never even looked at my pronation issue. When I asked him why he did not address the pronation he just shrugged. I will have to go elsewhere to have the skates properly fitted, by someone who actually knows how to do the fitting. I would not recommend this shop for skates and/or fitting. The staff there apparently have no experience doing this kind of work. read more

I bought new downhill skis and boots there several years ago and have continued to use them for service and maintenance. They took the time to have a conversation about how and where I ski and what I wanted out of my new skis. Then they suggested a couple of options and described the differences. A couple of the ski specialists even discussed it themselves and shared their different opinions, which was really helpful. In the end, I am still in love with the skis I bought and I trust their staff. I bought boots at the same time and I always have a very hard time buying any footwear, my feet are challenging. Again, great discussions and advice. I ended up selecting the one that was the boot specialist's second choice. They are great boots, but if I had it to do again, I would pick his first choice. Their service is first rate as well. I've had periodic maintenance done there. I just shredded the bottom of my cross country skis on gravel and I'm headed over there to see if they can save them. I've been here four times now, and I'm done completely at this point. Every employee I've met there is severely condescending and rude. If you have any of your own thoughts or opinions on something, they won't hesitate to belittle you and try to make you feel like they're an expert and you're a lowly chump. I've done plenty of inline skating in my life and I'm very comfortable in skates, but none of the employees seemed believe me, and instead acted like I was some inexperienced child who knew nothing. They spouted nonsense they blatantly assumed about a product I mentioned, and when I tried to show them a picture of it on my phone, they were in denial, barely looked at it, and stuck to their argument, even with solid proof right in front of their eyes. They also tried to tell me what I wanted, rather than being accommodating to my desires/needs in a skate. If hey weren't certain I was buying from them, they didn't even want to talk to me. My cousin and girlfriend both bought skates from here, and they were even pretty rude to them. People paying them hundreds of dollars shouldn't be stared at straight faced and nearly ignored. If you're not an old rich white person willing to eat out of their "knowledgeable" hands and agree to everything they say, you're not going to have a pleasant experience in their shop. These people didn't even try to fake being friendly to me, no matter how friendly I was being to them. I was never rude to these people, mind you. I killed them with kindness, and decided I'd rather give them a bad review here instead. I Highly recommend going somewhere else (like Hoigaard's) where the people are super nice, friendly, and extremely helpful, even when I told them they didn't have the exact type of skate I wanted to buy. I arrived on a weekday morning hoping to buy some skates for my young daughter and myself, we got some real attitude (eye rolling, annoyed tone, 'fine you can wait if you want' etc) about coming in to buy skates w/o an appointment. We decided to leave and we spent our money elsewhere. It's fine if you want to run a business based on appts, but at least be nice to people who come in w/o one; a little kindness, a respectful explanation, and offer to schedule a future appt would have been all it took to keep us as a future customer. You can also always tell a lot by how businesses respond to negative reviews, and every single response here to negative reviews is defensive and dismissive of customers' experiences. Some businesses reply, 'Sorry you had this experience, we'd like to see what we can do to make it right, please contact our manager, etc...' but not Pierce, and that says a lot about a business and how they feel about customers. I was referred to Pierce at the suggestion of a friend who is a ski instructor. I was looking to buy some new ski gear at 10 years of renting. I called ahead and made an appointment with Dave Hinze who I was told was a great boot fitter. It took about a week but I got an appointment to see Dave. Dave was great. We went to Pierce on the morning of 4/5/2012. The manager at the counter located at the entrance failed to greet us upon entering. A female sales associate behind the inline counter said hello to us from across the room after we had made our way in. We asked if they offered the service to heat mold K2 inline skates, the associate looked at us like we were on drugs, asked the manager at the front counter if they did, and then they both said "no, not on those skates"...as if we should've already known. They stated that K2 skates will fail if subjected to the heat molding process which is in stark contrast to what K2 stated directly when corresponding with them via e-mail. (My wife's skates are too big due to her being pregnant at the time of purchase and now that she's not pregnant, her skates are a size and a half too big.) Then they asked if we purchased them from them and we stated they were purchased online, they became even more blunt. Being in sales for eternity, we should have been greeted upon arrival from the first person. If they can't mold the boots, then so be it. Don't give me a line of B.S. as if I should know your ongoing battles with K2, as we were only doing what the company stated may help until it's time to buy a new pair. They should have shown us comparable options for marathon skating that they offer after they measured my wife's foot and should have pointed out the pros to buying from them rather than condemning us for buying online. So in summary, there's a reason why while living in the area for the past 14 years we've driven by and never stopped in...and we're sorry for the one time we did. The employee who helped me was nice enough, but when he asked a colleague to comment on my boots, recently purchased online because they aren't carried by the store, he proceeded to inform me that they were an inferior product with serious flaws. In the market for a new or used pair of figure skates, my companion brought me here since his past experience had been top notch. Experiencing this place, myself, I will agree that the service at this place is top notch. I can't even imagine something better, in fact (well, o.k., lower prices would be real nice). For many years, I'd been toting around the ice skates I got as a Christmas present from my parents when I was in grade school - yes, they bought them a bit big so that I'd have room in them for my feet to grow.. And for many years, these skates did the trick for me. It was all recreational fun just to have some blades on my feet and walk the few blocks to the neighborhood skating rink. And as years went by, I donned my ice skates less and less. Now, it's been about 20 years since I last glided over the ice on blades. A recent invitation to go out ice skating spurred me into action. The other day was my first time for being "fitted" for ice skates - sit down, light socks on, and then being asked to stand on one foot atop a measuring stick (skate brand specific, since different brands are sized differently from another brand, just like women's jeans, I guess), and then stand with the other foot on the measuring stick. I was able to try on two different brands of skates, both new, as they did not have any used skates in my size. After walking around in each pair, I was able to determine, along with the guidance of the young woman helping me (a former competitive figure skater, and fellow Wisconsin-ite) which pair felt the best on my feet. And I ended up shelling out much more than I'd ever intended on spending on a pair of ice skates, and I was happy about the possibilities. Overnight, however, buyer's remorse took a powerful hold on my senses and held me to returning them the following day. They handled my return cheerfully and promptly, no problem. I will come here again when I have extra money to burn on something in this attractive and comfortable-feeling store. Their service is excellent! read more

I have been doing business with Pierce for 15 years, and just yesterday had my best experience of customer service. I'd purchased used skates for my 9-eyar-old daughter; after two weeks they were pinching her feet. We drove to Pierce (I live in St. Louis Park), and the folks there gave some kind of heat treatment to the boots that form fitted them to my daughter's foot. They inserted wedges into the sole of the skates. Bottom line, the boots are custom fitted for my daughter. I was extremely happy with this level of service. Customer service here is terrible. I have never been treated so poorly as a customer in my life. I went in to do a return the day after purchasing and was berated by the person who had helped me the day before. He was so rude and made me unbelievably uncomfortable, simply because I had decided another brand that I had tried on at another store fit me better. He went on and on, and I finally had to say he didn't need to be angry. It ended with a sarcastic "Enjoy!" as I walked out. Unreal. Unfortunate customer service experiences too many times. Staff (especially Ted) seem overwhelmed by only the few customers present. While skate specific staff present as overwhelmed you'll see other staff behind the counters reading newspapers and even others chatting away around clothing racks and trying on new inventory. (Seriously!) They are not always open when their website indicates. Most recent experience was told they couldn't help us because they needed to close by 2 (we arrived at 1:40) and were asked by staff "did you call first" implying we should have called to see if they were open before coming. Their website says open until 5:30 so why would I call to see if they were open at 1:40? It's truly unfortunate because their selection of figure skates and related equipment is unmatched in the area. With 2 kids who race Pierce is the only place that I purchase skis or boots. The staff is beyond knowledgeable while being very friendly and accommodating. I help with a high school race team and send all of our racers to Pierce for equipment needs. Honestly if you need a coat the pickings are slim but for equipment they are 2nd to none. The man who fixed my daughter's equipment was so patient and took extra time to put extra coats of wax on her skis.
