This is the best running store in Minnesota. This is the best running store in Minnesota. What Jeff and Bekah Metzdorff have done to make a retail store into the epicenter of running culture in the entire Midwest is remarkable. You will get it when you walk in. You need a pair of shoes and they'll make you run on a treadmill, ask you some questions and you'll be fitted for what shoe fits for you. From there, they have gear you want to wear running. And for those us (myself included) who aren't runners, they have comfortable clothing you will wear daily for comfort or for your own workouts. You go deeper if you're new to the Twin Cities and join a free group run, which is multiple times a week to keep you going. You might even find a date there, it happens oddly often. If you're one of those people who need to run a marathon, you'll see them during the Twin Cities Marathon yelling in the 20s mile area, getting written up in the local neighborhood papers for being too loud. From there, you want them to succeed, and you want to join them. Then you see their brand everywhere. In every race in the Midwest, you will see the brand name. And you'll feel good wearing it as well as you know it's a local business doing things right from the ground up. read more

Been 5 years so I thought I would update my review since I started running a bit. A 5K here and a 10K there, nothing too wild. Great staff and still has a great selection of shoes and apparel. What I learned by running myself is their fantastic shop runs that they put on several days per week and on every other Saturday, they have the assisted long run or "ALR" where there a lot of people, maybe ~100 all running different distances and paces on pre-set routes, like a 5K, 10K, 10 mile, etc. so you can pick a distance and pace and probably have someone to run with. They also provide Strava maps on their site so you really will not get lost. Best part is that these runs are free, they do it just because they love running and the running community. Kudos, amigos. read more

Amazing customer service and a great selection of shoes. The store has a fitting process that helps identify where you need the most support and the selection of shoes is tailored around that. The shoes are well worth the price and I love that you can return shoes within several months if they're not working out. I will only come here for athletic shoes now and highly recommend it. read more

I absolutely love Mill City Running. I have been coming here for all things running related since I was in XC in high school. They have incredible service, awesome selection, and are truly runner focused. They offer tons of resources and guidance for people looking to get into running. I recently joined their running team and have loved it! If you're looking for a way to get more involved in the sport, this is it! Their community and perks make joining the team so worth it. I'm way more motivated to get and run. They also offer workouts on Wednesday, which has been a great way for me to diversify my running habits and include harder exercises into my routine. If you're looking to buy quality running gear, this is the place! Support small and local! read more

My daughter's XC coach recommended Mill City for their gait analysis and youth athlete pricing. My daughter is 12, wears a size M 11.5, and is an XC rookie. Our Mill City ambassador was mega patient and understanding with her selections to try. I truly felt like the most important person that day. Word of warning - please don't abuse this store and their inventory, technology and kindness. I could feel the fear of our ambassador that I was the online shopping vulture looking to exploit the epic service we received. I bought in store and recommended it to the dads of other rookies I knew. Thank you Mill City Running! read more

Eleanor was super helpful with all of my questions! She fixed a bag that I accidentally had the zipper slip off of and also mapped out my feet and suggested shoes based on the results. 5/5 star customer service and prices are pretty fair. read more

Amazing store. They got me fit for my shoes and sports bra. Great experiences. Worth the price. Ask for Chelsea! I got fit got some great shoes and also they have running groups for every level! read more

So impressed with their customer service! After trying on 3 pairs I was nervous I wasn't going to find the perfect pair but Amanda was so kind and patient and helpful and literally found me the perfect pair! They clearly love their jobs and helping people and will work with you as long as you need to make sure you're happy with your purchase! Highly recommend! read more

What a great running store. We stumbled upon this place after suffering a loss (but what a game) at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings-Bears game and had time to kill before our dinner reservation next door. Sam C helped us out. She was super knowledgeable about all the products and delivered excellent customer service. Highly recommend if you are in the area and need new kicks or related running materials. They have shoes, socks, glasses, hats, and other accessories. read more

The go to place to get started on if you're wanting to get into running. You can get scanned and test out shoes on a treadmill to find the exact shoe that fits your need! The workers are passionate and extremely knowledgeable on their shoes. If they don't have your shoe in stock they can special order them for free! The prices are what you'd find online, but for the experience I wouldn't shop anywhere else! read more

I decided to get fit for shoes for all the walking I do as a downtown resident. I have at times struggled to walk even half a mile in my previous non-fitted shoes. I would tire easily and often get pain in my knees, legs and lower back. I was fitted with a 3D scan of my foot as well as having the salesperson watch me walk and then trying on several different shoes from different brands based on my feet size, width, arch and walking style. They all felt similar but settled on a pair of Hoka Men's Arahi 6. Wow! What a life changer it has been to have the proper shoes fitted to my feet. I tested the shoes on my way home and ended up walking 3 miles home. When before even walking .5 mile would bring pain. My average steps from Apple Health has increased to 10,000 and at the end of the day I don't feel sore or tired. Sometimes, at night I look at my watch and I am shocked at how much I have walked in the day.I have lost 10 lbs. from being able to walk and exercise pain free, and my resting heart rate has dropped 20 bpm. I have already gone back to get a second pair just for going out! I Didn't get a fitting the second time but I received excellent service! I have even brought my wife and Sister to get fitted and they love their shoes after getting fit as well. If you want to be able to exercise, walk, or run more with less pain go get fitted at Mill City Running!! read more

Post Covid update: I haven't been to group runs in years at this point and I don't even know if flap jack Friday's is a thing... I went in there to get a new sports bra. You can imagine that sports bra shopping is about as much fun as swim suit shopping in the worst way. I was also carting around a very tired two year old. I say all that to set the stage for what I was assuming would be a fast and frustrating trip to my favorite running store. I was wrong and happily so! The lady that measured me for the sports bra kindly humored my little and measured her as well which went a long way to appeasing her grumpiness! The layout is new and improved! The staff is as lovely as ever and the merch makes me want to spend the whole day there just trying on shoes! read more

Super friendly inviting people here, they do a great job make sure to check them out!

I came here for the first time to attend the Glaze Run and we had a blast! I can happily say I have fulfilled my dream of eating 4 donuts, while simultaneously living my nightmare of running a lot. The staff was so nice, organized, and helpful. I enjoy running but I'm not a "runner", and I was a little nervous that my lack of experience would be super obvious. I'm happy to say, they were so cool about the various needs of everyone there. They had a variety of distances and pace groups available, so I didn't feel obligated to step too far out of my comfort zone. They had a lot of great merchandise - if we hadn't been on our way out after the run, I would have definitely stayed to browse. It's all nice quality and the staff seemed very knowledgeable. read more

Want to get into running and have no idea where to start? This is the place. Everyone had a very friendly attitude and went above and beyond to help me find the right shoe. Starting off with a shoe fitment (advanced process where they scan your feet and record your run on a treadmill to make an accurate determination on shoes made for you) Next they'll bring out a good number of shoes that fit your profile, so you can try them on and do a light jog on the treadmill. After you choose your shoe they'll go through the colors they have available. At the end of it all I was invited to join them on the weekly runs they host. 11/10 experience. read more

I've been due for a new pair of running shoe as my trusty brooks model hasn't been working for me as well recently. My boyfriend has never been fitted before so we decided to stop on Saturday morning together and immediately were helped by Lukas! Lukas was able to assist both in productive way despite both of us being picky and trying on 15+ pairs between us. We will definitely go back next time we need a new pair! read more

I LOVE Mill City Running, but I have not spent a dime there. I go pretty often for their beginners' running club on Tuesdays at 6 pm. You show up, go upstairs, get in a circle, answer the question of the week, and choose what pace and route you'd like to run that day. Mingle! Talk to people either before you go out for the run or while you're running. Everyone is SO friendly. The reason I love this store so much is because it's more of a community than a store. It makes me feel like I'm part of a team, and they're always willing to help. My boyfriend has pretty bad shin splints and pain in his lower legs when he runs. We asked for some pointers after a run once and they didn't try to sell us anything, just gave us tips and ways to relieve and avoid pain. Amaaaazing. Whenever I come into the store, someone says hello to me directly. I have never felt obligated to buy anything (although I will want to buy my next shoes from them!) and I always feel welcome. Mill City Running feels like a big hug. I love it! read more

Mill City Running is the best place to buy running shoes. They are truly knowledgeable about running and want you to find the perfect pair. The staff are so patient and stuck with me trying on at least 20 pairs of shoes. They analyze the physical characteristics of your feet, do a running test and have lots of shoes you can try on. The staff had some great suggestions for what kind of shoes I should get that really helped with my runs and preventing blisters. They have a ton of merchandise for runners and I've gotten compression socks and antichafing sticks here. It's definitely a must if your a runner. Parking can be a bit tricky and it is all street parking, but well worth the effort. read more

I LOVED my 1st experience here! I've been sized at another running shoe store years ago and knew it was time for an update. I had gone to said store, however, my latest experience wasn't the best and had known about Mill City from seeing their name on sweaters & shirts. I was warmly greeted by Jeff's 2 cute pups before having my feet & stride analyzed (which I learned something new that day). After going through various choices Jeff pulled, I landed on Brooks' Ghost 13 with an insert that has my feet feeling amazing! I was then asked if I was interested in other gear in which the hand off went to April (? I forgot her name) to get sized in sports bras, which I ended up purchasing as well Again, LOVED my 1st experience and will definitely be back. Thank you all for such a great experience at your store! read more

New to the area, I have not ventured to find many local running stores due to the pandemic. However, a certain shoe release had me jumping at the chance to not only check this store out for the first time, but also get my hands on it. This place is legit. A very clean running store with every top brand available for purchase. They have everything from shoes, tights, shorts, jackets, hats, sunglasses and nutrition. They even have some top expensive brands like Maurten, which was a huge plus. Given the pandemic I made an appointment ahead of time and was greeted with hand sanitizer and a fresh pair of socks. They seem to go out of their way to make sure customers and employees are safe. Additionally, they have a running/racing team which I plan on joining eventually. Maybe 2021? Oh and I bought the pair of shoes, and some Maurten. read more

Wow, this place is amazing! Due to covid I was able to schedule an appointment and meet with someone. They had awesome technology to help find the right shoe, had a ton of options including shoes that are just black and white, and a treadmill to try them out. The woman who helped me was incredibly patient, knowledgeable and funny. I love the shoes I got and the overall experience! They also have a 60 day return policy, if you don't like the shoes you can return or exchange them. read more

I think it says something that we ended up with shoes that we love, not knowing that we needed them! From the moment we walked in, we knew this experience would be different. The store itself is conveniently located, clean, well stocked and perfectly laid out. Those reasons alone might draw you in, but the service will make you a lifer. Andrea was exceptional. She took the time (even though it was late in the day, and she probably just wanted to go home) to measure our feet, observe our walk and standing habits, and then proceeded to very patiently put us in several pairs of shoes until we found THE fit - she was remarkable. Funny, personable and above all knowledgeable, Andrea made it easy to buy our new kicks...and best of all, WE LOVE THEM!!! This was the most fun, educational and successful shoe shopping we've ever experienced, and you should too. You won't be disappointed. read more

I heard about Mill City Running's shoe and foot evaluation process from colleague who had a great experience. Even after hearing that I was blown away with the excellent customer service I received from Jackie tonight. She ran the scan of my foot stance and analyzed my foot placement as I ran on the treadmill. She was patient as I tried on several shoes and knowledgeable to guide me to the right amount of cushion and comfort. I couldn't be happier! If you are just getting started runnIng or have been at it a long time I'd recommend them for gear and their running events! read more

Mill City Running makes the process of getting running shoes easy. You walk in and an employee asks you basic questions about your running history. Jump onto their treadmill and then they'll record your running motion. After some analysis and education, they bring out shoes to try. I tried about 6 pairs before deciding on the Brooks Launch. They have a big selection and have the big names so it's likely you find a pair for you. The employees are patient and listen to your concerns. They don't mind you running around the store like a fool. Also, they have past models for the budget conscious shopper. Another tip I have is that they have coupons so check your mailbox for them. Mill City Running make the process fun and easy. I would definitely come back here for future pairs. read more

I decided to visit Mill City Running rather than just go to REI. I was curious if their expertise and service would help me as I'm getting ready to run a marathon. The staff analyzed my walking and running stride and strike point. They made a recommendation that was very appropriate for my very awkward feet. I used the new shoes to run a 17 mile long run and wow! What a difference. This team is awesome. read more

I love this place - great selection, amazing customer service, and bonus points that its independently owned. Anytime I am able to convince a new friend to run a race with me, I bring them here to get their feet fitted for shoes. If you've been running for years or haven't run in years, this is the place to go. No matter the skill level, they can and will help you. The only gripe is that parking is terrible - not exactly their fault though. read more

This is the spot! I've been fitted for running shoes before (elsewhere) and this is by far the best experience I've ever had. What a great shop that has the best interest of its customers. During the Covid-19 shelter in place period, they performed a virtual fit analysis for my 13 year old son. Then provided best options and delivered the one we selected. The color did not match the expectations for my son. The great folks at Mill City Running exchanged them with another home delivery. How about that for customer service?!?! Love it. That is the type of business I want to support. Thanks Mill City Running! read more

I'm a runner and one of those weird people who can spend hours looking at new gear. I love an indie running store and Mill City Running is awesome. Parking is a pain, but the staff is full of knowledge and always helpful. They have a pretty good selection for a small place and their hoodies are the most comfortable I've ever worn. One very cool thing they do is host weekly runs and then meet for pancakes afterwards. How cool is that? Well, to me it's very cool. I shall return. read more

I can't speak highly enough for Mill City Running. I discovered the store a couple months ago when I started training for a marathon. I went in seeking help regarding nutrition and was immediately assisted by Jeff. He was knowledgable and friendly. I have gone back a couple times for running gear and more nutrition. I also checked out another store in the Twin Cities and it just couldn't compare. Today I finally was able to go back to Mill City and pick-up a new pair of shoes. Jeff assisted me throughout the process and I feel so satisfied with the products I purchased. We started with the "fit test" to ensure I would be getting the best shoes for me. He provided information, a variety of options and a calm and friendly demeanor. Once he gave me his feedback about the shoes he prefers that helped to solidify my decision, I'm much more inclined to make a purchase when someone has personal experience/feedback about the product/brand. Also, he wasn't only knowledgable about shoes, I asked about a few different items and he was able to give me information for all of it! I ended up walking out with a full bag of new running stuff and I can't wait to use it all, especially the new shoes. read more

- wide selection of shoes and clothes - well organized store - treadmill for testing shoes - group runs and a running board - running enthusiasts all around I needed new shoes this past March so I picked up a pair for running and a pair for walking. I got blisters from the running pair after two short runs so I took them back. I was happy the salesperson was quickly able to recommend a wide pair of shoes for me (they didn't have them in stock on my first visit) and they were less expensive than the first pair so now I have store credit. Husband and wife owned running store. I've had an amazing experience. Running shoe fitting: They will bring out all the shoes they feel would best fit you, your running style, and comfort, etc. They had me run on their treadmill and videotape so we could see how much I pronate and find the appropriate shoe. Following a couple brunch mimosas, I worked up the courage to visit a running store. I've walked by this place quite a bit and have seen a ton of folks around town wearing Mill City Running stocking hats, so I thought it'd be the go-to place to invest in some lighter weight running shoes. It was the best retail experience I've had in recent memory! As a complete fitness novice, I was apprehensive -- however, everyone at Mill City Running was extremely friendly, accommodating, and helpful. I tried on 5 or so comfortable and light shoes and had the opportunity to hop on the store treadmill and have my shoe fit analyzed. Frankly, I was very impressed with this process. It shows the staff really wants you to be happy and find a shoe that fits so well you'll want to run all the time -- not just quickly make a sale. I geared up -- shoes, socks, shirts -- and was impressed by how little I spent. Besides the great shoes, it's worth noting that their t-shirts are ridiculously soft and comfortable. This is a fantastic, locally-owned shop and I look forward to returning very soon. read more

Mill City Running makes me happy. Every time I drive by I am reminded of the great people who work there, the awesome products, and the local flavor while bonding over races. After skirting the edges of this place for a while, I finally went in a couple weeks ago. They expertly checked my feet and helped me find shoes that will work perfectly.
