I needed a "good pair" of shoes for running and I had heard that paying a visit to a place like Fleet Feet was highly recommended. Considering I know absolutely zero about running shoes, I followed that advice and had a top-notch experience. I was greeted by Kathleen, who is a total gem, and was directed to a bench to place my belongings. I then did a 3D foot scan, followed by a quick walk up and down the store so she could watch my gait. Kathleen brought the tablet over and we looked at the scans. She said a lot of foot terms and I nodded along, fully trusting the process. Shoes were suggested and then taken for a spin around the store. They were all excellent choices, but I had to choose one and went with a pair of Asics. I was so glad I had a shoe guide for the journey. Kathleen was knowledgeable and kind. The store has running accessories, apparel, and even nutrition offerings. I'm not saying I'm a runner, but I would definitely make a return visit for another pair of shoes down the road. read more

The staff have helped me through 6 marathons, 25 half marathons and many 5 and 10 K races. I've had many different brand shoes and many, many other items of clothing. Wowiewewa. This place is really cool. I (non-athletic) decided to start running (bad idea) and as expected I immediately hurt myself. I realized that my fashionable TJ Maxx clearance sneakers probably aren't the best choice for real activity so I invested in some proper running shoes. Right off the bat, the gentleman here had me step into their FITid machine which creates a 3D model digitally of your feet to get an idea of your EXACT size, whether or not you pronate or supinate, how high your arch is, if you need a narrow-specific or wide fit, etc. Really nifty to take the guesswork out of it! So we got my specs and he brought out his choice for me to try, as well as 2 other possibilities to compare. That first pair ended up being THE pair, and they are hands-down the most comfortable pair of tennis shoes I've ever worn! I've been running daily and I've had zero pain in my feet or back. Being a recovering fatty, up until this point I've gone through life with the understanding that running was reserved only for chasing down the ice cream truck and evading the fuzz. Recently my employer sponsored a 5k and I ran it to sumplement my new healthy lifestyle and to see if I still had it after running in one 13 years ago as a senior in high school. Well, I finished it and loved it. The only problem was my 9 year old New Balance that I got off a discount rack at JC Penney. Here is where Marathon Sports come in. I did some research online to find a shoe store that didn't have the words JC or Penney in it. I arrived at Marathon and was immediately greeted and assisted in my quest for new kicks. The sales person had me prance around the store to analyze my pimp limp. From this she brought out some suggested shoes. I tried each on and resumed my pimp limp in each. They also have a treadmill to take them for a test drive. I'm amazed at the difference a good pair of shoes makes. It was like running on little pillows made just for my footsies. The best part was when I signed up for their email list I became a member and now receieve 20% off all purchases in the future. I am hell-bent on buying from independent running stores, but I spent years and years buying every brand of running shoe on the market and suffering from every running injury known to man. In a moment of sheer genius, I went to Marathon Sports where they made me actually get my butt on a treadmill and watched me run, and told me I was buying the wrong kind of shoes. I whined but I listened, and three years later I'm on my 9th pair of the same exact shoe (and the only reason I have gone through so many is because they were soooo right on on the type I needed that I now run 50-60 miles a week, injury-free, and I am on my 10th full marathon so I keep putting 500 miles on the shoes and having to buy new ones!!) This store is the best. I've been buying my running shoes here for the last few years now, and I can't say enough good things about it. Weekends tend to be really busy, so if you need extra help, go on a weekday morning. You can definitely still find someone when it's busy, but it feels much less rushed when they're not swamped with people. I've had nothing but excellent customer service here. The staff has always taken the time to examine my old shoes for wear patterns, let me hop on the treadmill in the back to try a new pair out and always make sure the new pair fits properly (even if it's the same shoe I've previously worn). This is not a big box athletic store. The staff here takes the time to get to know your sports needs, specifically those related to running, and help you based upon that. I went in to get my first pair of real running shoes and had a great experience! One member of the staff, a woman whose name I forget :(, was extremely helpful. She assessed my gait to see what sort of support I needed and brought out assortments of shoes for me to try. She helped me determine the correct size and cut (who knew shoes could all be so different?!) so I could be sure my shoe would be comfortable and fulfill my needs. She also showed me how to lace one of my shoes to help keep my "skinnier" heel in place. The shoes I ended up with are not only functional, but they are cute AND competitively priced. No disappointments here! I will most certainly make the trip to Marathon Sports for any of my future running needs! read more

Hands-down best place to buy a pair of running shoes in the Minneapolis, IMHO. They will check your gait and listen to all your injury woes and provide suggestions for proper training. They will even let you try the shoes on the pavement OUTSIDE. Unlike those mall stores, they won't let you buy a shoe for the way it looks, as tempting as that is. They understand the importance of fit and what shoes work best for what gait. I remember coming here as a teen in CC for their guidance and expertise (or it could have been Run N' Fun in St. Paul - also great). Either way, 20+ (eek!) years later, it's now the place I take my adolescent/adult kids to get their running shoes. The older one - an avid fitness jogger - specifically made a point to ask that we squeeze in a visit to this shop for a pair of new kicks on his very brief stint home from college. We capped off our visit with a walk through Broders' to-go (just for the visual stimulation) and a Bagel across the street at Bruegger's. read more

I really enjoyed my Marathon Sports experience. I had been running all summer in a very old pair of tennis shoes, and luckily had not injured myself. I knew as I started adding on more and more miles I would need a pair of serious running kicks. I solicited the opinions of my running friends, and pretty much all of them pointed me towards Marathon. I really like this store, it is a large space so you do not feel cramped and have some room to really walk around in the shoes you are looking at, or heck even jog around. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The lady who helped me had me walk a bit to see how I moved (heel-striker and I tend to roll to the outsides of my feet). She brought out about 4 different kids of shoes. I tried them on and walked around and jogged a bit. The woman who helped me offered honest feedback on each of the shoes, which was nice, since I, obviously, do not know much about the various brands. Also this shop did not feel like a insiders club (some running stores seem like they cater to the hardcore). As for what I bought. The shoes were ten dollars cheaper than the price tag on them (unexpected sale, that is a real bonus). When I took them out for my first run in them it was amazing! Their shoe selection is outstanding and they helped me find the perfect pair (Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13...I've bought two pairs there already and I plan to get the 14s from there this spring). They love their customers! I have now bought 3 pairs of running shoes from this store. Recently my new pair turned to hitting something wrong on my foot. I couldn't even get through a 10 min jog on the treadmill with them on. Nothing wrong with the shoes, but the stitching hit me all wrong. I came to the store in hope of exchanging them. One of their kind people helped me do just that. I have seen one of their brilliant doctors to get help with stretches for IT band issues. They just bring so much support to runners. As a long time runner I have gone through lots of shoes. I always dread getting new pair because they never fit well immediately and I have a break-in period with blisters and hot spots. For as long time I would buy the shoes off the rack at DSW or Dicks. I went to Marathon Sports on the recommendation of my Wife who has always had exercise shoe difficulties and finally am getting the right shoes that work right out of the gate. If I could do a 0 star, I WOULD. I went into fleet feet to get my feet scanned so that I would know what size shoe to buy. The employees were helping other customers so I looked around for a bit. I got in line at the desk to ask them to help me scan my feet and get this, the person behind me freaking budged me and the employee just left the desk when it was my turn. I feel harassed and DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS AWFUL STORE. My mother went there once too and the employee laughed at her when she asked for walking shoes with foot support. I came in last weekend with my sister, who lives out of state (and doesn't have access to knowledgeable shoe geeks). She's been struggling with pretty bad chronic plantar fasciitis, and needed some supportive shoes. Scott assisted her for more than 45 minutes, providing a comprehensive fitting of shoes, which also included a foot and gait analysis. The foot scanning technology they have is pretty great, and when it was combined with Scott's impressive knowledge of shoes, I think it truly made a difference for her. She tells me her feet felt so much better within even a couple of days, thanks to the careful listening and attention to detail that Scott provided. I went in on a Sunday afternoon to get new running shoes. Having stopped running for 5 years, I was coming back to the sport - albeit as someone who respects his age. The sales person listened to my story and examined my old pair of shoes. Then he pulled three pairs for me to try. Even though the first pair felt good, he suggested I try all three on the treadmill. Then we narrowed it down to two pairs and he had me try one shoe from each pair on either foot. By the time I was done, he had spent 30 minutes with me and I'm convinced that this was the best pair. Her feet had been hurting and she wanted to discuss her concerns with knowledgeable staff. We were not disappointed! Dan made us feel welcome the minute we walked into the store. I am a huge supporter of local Southwest Minneapolis stores and based on the favorable reviews on this site, I was excited to go pick up some new running shoes today. After 20 minutes in the store, I left without any shoes and really surprised that this store has received such positive reviews. I was helped after 5 minutes of standing around and then ignored while the salesperson helped another customer and the other handful of sales people ate bagels and talked among themselves. I think all businesses should take a lesson from Marathon Sports. I just exchanged a pair of expensive running shoes that I purchased a few weeks back because they weren't working. I went to Marathon Sports today in search of new running shoes and someone who would analyze my gait to help me get the most appropriate shoes. John helped me and he was very patient and informative about the different shoes. They also had me run outside on the sidewalk to see what felt best and this really made a difference, I haven't encountered many places that encourage you to take shoes outside for a test drive! Also, they're not pushy or trying to get you to buy the most expensive shoe. I didn't ask price and he didn't tell me until I picked which ones I liked best, they turned out to be the cheapest of all the shoes I had tried on! It was nice to not have any pressure or feel like they just wanted to sell something. Finally, as a new customer if you give them your name you get 20% off. I've relocated to quiet St.Paul but travel back to SW Minneapolis for my long runs around the lakes. It had been years since I shopped at Marathon Sports. Wow, what a fantastic welcome back it was! I found the perfect running shoes (unbelievable selection) but what happen thereafter was pure magic. I bought running clothes, yoga pants, jackets, causal summer tops and yes, the PERFECT jog bra! This would have taken me at minimum 3 additional stops at different stores to pull this all together. Zachary couldn't have been more wonderful to work with. They've won my business.
