When you find a restaurant called pie punks, of course it's a must to try it. The overall vibe the restaurant is super cool, and everyone that works there is really nice. The food on the other hand is mediocre at best. Pizza is no longer that go to quick inexpensive meal, but it should be good, if not amazing. This experience was none of that. The crust on the pizza was very rubbery and tasted like paste. The toppings were just as bad. The pizza sauce tasted like something that had been poured out of a can, and the toppings did not scream fresh and delicious. The combination of everything together was just not good. Add the price tag, and it's a hard no moving forward. It's not a place I plan on going back to, and there are so many better places in the San Francisco area that have much better Pizza! Convenient location for a pizza bite after happy hour. They have a variety of pies. My favorite was their normal grandma slice - the classic. Love the tomato and basil combo. The bottom was very crispy and crunchy. I've tried their vodka martini and I wasn't a a big fan of the olives because it was too salty and overpowering. Overall, love the joint. We live nearby. Here's how it goes: My boyfriend texts me that he's heading home. I text him back to bring me a slice. So he stops here and orders a glass of wine and slices, finishes the wine and then brings the slices home. And now, I suspect the staff has clocked who's leaving this review. This was some of the best pizza I've had in a while. Make sure to get the grandma style. I opted for the Fredo (white sauce) and a Classic (red sauce) both incredible! It's a smaller space, that's a bit dark and loud but a vibe. Seating can take some time, especially if there is a line but the staff are friendly and as helpful as they can be when busy. They have slice options as well as full pizza options. Happy hour from 4-6pm PST. Definitely worth checking out if in the area! Good prices too. Two slices filled me up. Came here during happy hour (weekdays 4-6pm) for a small outing with coworkers. I had high expectations because it's quite popular with friends and i was not disappointed. it was very spacious and they were prepped with more seats because of downtown first thursdays. we ordered the broccolini's to start and they are definitely worth trying. good chrisp and just a little something healthy before you dig into some pizza. Our server recommended doing half pepperoni and half mauros molto meat on a grandmas style pizza. We liked the pepperoni but we really enjoyed the mauros molto meat we ended up ordering more of it. Quite a few places serve Detroit style pan pizza in the Downtown San Francisco area, so had a few choices. Pie Punks was the closest one walkable from our hotel, with a really good online rating. Like a lot of really popular pizza joints, it's mainly a bar atmosphere with a bar menu centered on pizza. I found the finished pizza to have an incredible crust, but a bit small with stingy toppings and burnt cheese/oil to make parts of it unpleasant. Happy Hour runs between 4 and 6 pm everyday, with some dollars off for drinks and pies. We came early enough to have choice of tables, with the place being packed by the time we left. There is table service provided by the double duty bartenders, and they were admirably able to keep up even with a full house, not forgetting any requests made verbally. Happy hour usually means my wife and I will try a first-time drink. She got the Goldfinger cocktail ($14 minus $2 for HH), and it was very strong. It was the first time I've tried a cocktail with popping boba (in this case, lychee flavor), and it was a really good addition. There were two draft beers we hadn't tried, Ghost Town Lager and Pranqster Golden Ale ($9 minus $1 for HH), so got the latter. Forgot that Golden Ale is hoppy, so ended up finishing it by myself (my wife won't drink hoppy beer). As for the main event, it came out pretty fast (under 15 minutes) once we ordered it. It was a Pepperoni Detroit ($23 minus $3 for HH), and the crust was fluffy, not too thick and very crunchy on the outside. The edges of the cheese had been cooked well, but beyond crunchy caramelization to make the corners really burnt (I like the corners of a Detroit, but this was too burnt even for me). I think the 10x8 pizza could be finished by one really hungry person...and a good amount for two. There is a 2% surcharge for using credit cards, and payment can be handled at the table, using Toast. For once, we didn't have leftovers so were quickly on our way. read more

this place was so awesome! Came with my coworker for a bite out and was amazed! We started with drinks, modelo and a pussy galore. We then ordered the cheese curds- they were so light and airy it was such a nice surprise! I was expecting something similar to a mozzarella stick but was super surprised to taste how airy it was. Then, we wanted more so we got the risotto balls- these weren't as good as I was wanting but nonetheless they did a great job, 3/5 on those tho. Next we decided on a slice of the classic - this was unlike any slice I've had before. Square shaped and perfectly burnt crusted edges gave the pizza a unique flavor. The sauce was sweeter than I anticipated but not overpowering- more of a I can't wait to try this again way! I think they gave us a few extra by mistake. We happily obliged even though they charged us for them. Grandma slices are arguably my favorite, however I don't find them too often where I live. The margherita and pepperoni were delicious. A nice crisp on the bottom, proper ratio of cheese and sauce. And those pep cups were oily, fatty, salty, and exactly what they should be. Cocktails were very good, but service was slow as molasses. Seemed like they were understaffed or not expecting as many customers during the time we visited. When I first entered on Monday evening, I liked the casual and inviting atmosphere with dim lighting and sports playing on the TV's at the bar. But it was confusing where and how to order. I just found someone in the back and sat myself at a table. From there, service was top notch, super friendly, gave me a recommendation for pizza, and refilled my water without me asking. I ordered the cinis appetizer, a sausage slice, and a pepperoni slice for dine in. The sauce and cheese on the pizza were minimal and not evenly spread throughout each slice, but the toppings and overall flavor were definitely good, the pepperonis crisp on top, and the pizza grandma style with crunchy edges. But even after being reheated and served to me, it tasted somewhat like it had been sitting out for a while, meaning not the freshest. The cinis on the other hand tasted freshly made, served hot, delicious and fluffy inside. I'm eager to try a freshly made whole pizza here. If the not-so-fresh slices were good, the freshly made pizza must be stellar. I'll definitely be back to find out, especially to try the fredo pizza too. read more

Stopped by Pie Punks for lunch on my first day in San Francisco with a colleague and sat at the bar so we could knock out a bit of work, drink some beer and split a pizza. We went with the Meat and Greens, which came topped with prosciutto, arugula, fresh cheese and rosemary honey. Ordered online takeout via Yelp before heading over there (for the first time, wasn't sure how this was going to pan out; no pun intended). When I got there, I went straight to the bar, to let them know I was there to pickup a takeout order. The server was very friendly and the place wasn't packed (great timing). The server shortly came out with my completed order. I was expecting to pay for it right then and there, but she said it was already taken care of. But the funny part is that I never input any credit card information when submitting the order online via Yelp. I'm going to check my Yelp account right after this, to see where my CC info is saved. But nonetheless the process was quick, easy and effortless. Even with takeout, the food was still holding well. From the salad, to the cinis, to the pizza. Loved the lemon dressing on the arugula. And I loved putting the salad onto the pizza as well. The pizza itself had crunchy edges but the crust also had a spongey bounce to it, which I liked. The cinis were the only items I wish had more flavor to. Without the spicy aioli, they were plain to me. That aioli elevated the flavor, but it still needed something to cut the fried/blandness to it. I couldn't finish it all, both cinis and pizza, which both tasted just as good, the next day, straight from the fridge, no microwave. Would like to try the food in person at the restaurant next time, to see if that changes anything, flavor profile wise. It was packed on a Thursday night and we decided to order to go. We had to flag down a server just to order to go. They said it would be a 5 min wait but we probably waited around 10 minutes. Space is pretty tight so just waiting for your order or waiting to be seated is quite awkward cause there's no where to wait. Finally got our pizza and it was alright. One of the slices was burnt at the bottom. We ordered the grandma style slices and I wasn't a huge fan. They also have a few different fun and tasty cocktails as well as beer and wine. I went with a slice of classic pepperoni and one of the sausage with broccoli and Calabrian chilis. My favorite was the pepperoni because they were perfectly crispy and there wasn't too much sauce and great cheese. There are some tables and bar seating inside as well as a couple of tables outside. We ate here randomly on 11/17/25 evening when we were traveling to the city. We chose it after seeing the many wonderful reviews about it. My husband said, "we want to watch the game" so he sort of reluctantly let us sit where we wanted. We ordered 2 pizzas (they only come in one size): cheese and pepperoni. We also got the cheese curds as it was happy hour so they were discounted. I also got a coke with no ice. The same bartender was the one who took our order and he seemed distracted, but we were hoping for the best. He came back with the cheese nubs and did not bring the soda, and went back to the bar. He started making a couple other drinks and I could see him sort of doing those slowly, and then made a coke with ice. He then brought the other drinks to people and finally brought the coke to our table. My husband told him we asked for it without ice and he went back and started to pour the ice out to give me the original drink, now without ice. My husband asked him to make a new drink, as it will already be watery, and he sort of argued, no, I'm just taking out the ice-which was confusing, and he said no, it'll still be watery, please make a new one. He reluctantly made another one and gave it to me. Then a while later, I needed a refill. He refilled it very slowly, and only about half way. Bringing it back and sort of pounding it on the table. The person who brought the pizzas was way nicer and more polite and the pizza was delicious! Great thin crust pizza. The flavors were great and the crust was very good too. We ate it all! The real only bad thing I have to say about it was about the bartender who seemed very grumpy and bothered by the need to take our order and actually get it right. If he had paid attention the first time he wouldn't have mistook the drink order and then wouldn't have had to remake it. So I'm not sure why you're upset with us, but he was off setting even before that, so it's hard to know what the source was! They are open late night and have pretty good Detroit pizza and cocktails especially their espresso martinis! Overall a 3.5 The grandma clearly had superior flavor but they got my order wrong - they added sausage to the pepp. And the cheese slice was so cold and hard, even though the pepp wasn't.
