OUR HEROES! Have had multiple good interactions in the past 5 years with Phoenix using their maintenance plan where they check your HVAC systems twice a year and keep everything running for a very reasonable cost. For some reason I forgot to do that this year and of course, our A/C went out during the worst heat wave in 65 years. Phoenix came out WITHIN HOURS and fixed it much to our relief. First, when I called the lady on the phone was very professional and helpful-- she got us an appointment within 2 days (which is quicker than I was expecting) I received a text soon after I called them, and another the day of, letting me know who was coming and at what time. There was a link to download an app showing me the status of my appointment, but I didn't use it. I purchased my house two years ago knowing that I would be replacing the HVAC system soon if for no other reason than to reduce the high utility bills of running such an old system (20 years old). When the time came I relied on my fellow Yelpers to get a list of reputable businesses and once again Yelp came through with flying colors. Micah the owner of PES was extremely professional and knowledgeable. He did not waste my time telling me what was wrong with the other guys. From the very first time I met these guys, and every interaction thereafter, they asked me to give them a Yelp review. It seemed like they didn't really want a review, nor did they want to earn my business, they just wanted 5 stars to keep their average up. They ended up installing my system. There were a couple hiccups, but they fixed the issues and it worked great. Fast forward a couple years now and the system goes offline. After noticing it a month later, I call them to schedule a service appointment. They set a date for a week and a half out claiming they're really busy, which is fine. But, when I called a day ahead to verify the appointment, again the day of the appointment, and repeated attempts after the date, they never called me back. That was months ago. Guess they're too busy drumming up new business than deal with customers they already have who are sitting on a system that is no longer generating energy for them. I couldnt even get this company to come out to my home. I called on Monday, got an appointment time from 1 to 3 pm for Wednesday. They sent me a confirmation text that i received. I took off work and low and behold no one shows up. I called the company and no response. Times are incredibly hard right now with covid 19 and i had to take work off to make this appointment. I was so impressed with the HVAC job that Phoenix did, that I went ahead and had them draw up a bid for a 18 panel 5.4 MW solar system with inverter. The price seemed fair, although I did do some research afterwards and found I could have bought a slightly larger system using the same inverter brand and a few more panels. But, that's another story. The solar specialist Baric and his team came out and did the job as scheduled and it passed building code inspection with ED county and the HOA inspection since all equipment has to be on the inside of the structure. Now, I get free electricity from P.G.&E. with a true up once a year which was about $400 this year. Mainly, it will pay for itself in about 6-7 years and the money I invested was well spent. In addition, there are the tax incentives from the government which saved me from paying almost $3,900 in taxes this past 2018 year and a carry forward of $1,400 to be applied in my 2019 tax year. So, I'm well on my way to getting back all the money I spent on this solar system. read more

The HVAC system in my house was a mixed bag of components ranging from 5 to 22 years old, and the main ducting in and out of the furnace was leaking a lot of air, so when the furnace fan started to fail last month I decided to replace the whole system. I called Phoenix Energy Solutions for an estimate, and the owner, Micah, was available two business days later to inspect and provide an estimate. He was 20 minutes early for the appointment, and his (very thorough) inspection took about an hour. He looked at every part of my old system, including the ductwork in the attic, and was able to make a written estimate about 20 minutes after completing the inspection and talking to me about the extent of the work and what I wanted to end up with in terms of price and quality. This first impression of Micah was very positive: he deduced the problems with the system (several I already knew about), plus some other problems I didn't know, mainly that the return duct was undersized for my house, which causes a loss of efficiency and makes the furnace work harder than it should. He gave me a brief resume of his experience; he had been doing HVAC work for 12 years or so as an employee, and has decided to run his own business. The estimate was agreeable, so I authorized the work to be done, and to my surprise, Micah said he would be ready to do the full replacement in only two days. This included the furnace, air conditioning evaporator and condenser, replacement of the return duct with a larger one, and moving the condenser from the east side to the north side of the house. This last meant a whole new "line set" (refrigerant piping) from the evaporator to the condenser, and all new electrical wiring from the main breaker panel to the condenser. On the day of the install, Micah and his crew of two assistants (Richard and Mario) arrived on time at 8:30 and went right to work. Micah spent most of the day on the a/c condenser, Mario did all the duct replacement work in the attic, and Richard did the furnace and evaporator replacement. I spent most of the day observing the furnace replacement. Richard's craftsmanship on the furnace replacement resulted in a far better job than I could have done myself (and it's my house), with all the sheet metal joints taped and sealed with mastic. The new line set and electrical wiring to the condenser was run very straight and precise along the outside of the house, and the whole thing looks very well done and professional. The job, including cleanup, was completed 30 minutes ahead of Micah's 5:00pm estimate. I would not have believed that all of that work could be done in one day, and especially done so well and neatly. I HIGHLY recommend this company and crew for your residential HVAC repairs. Micah was complete strait with me about my options, and offered two different systems with about a 20% price difference. He did not try in any way to hard-sell me on the more expensive system. The price he quoted was about the same as I would have expected from any other contractor in Sacramento for the same equipment, and his level of service and professionalism was far better than what some contractors I have dealt with have to offer. At all times during the job, Micah and his two assistants worked efficiently, were professional and courteous, and the job was done on time. read more

I first met Jason at a location where I have a rental townhouse. He was installing a hvac system at another townhouse in the complex. I talked to him about a bid for my hvac replacement and received one significantly lower than another company that I had used previously. I spoke with another townhouse owner in the complex and he strongly recommended Phoenix. Jason not only completed the job for his bid amount but completed it much faster than the other bidder proposed. My son is now living in the unit and keeps saying that he cannot believe his electric bill even during the 100 degree days that we had this summer. In addition to this I had a problem with my solar system at my home. I had had the system installed in two phases with two different contractors. The contractor that had installed the phase 1 array was no longer in business so I contacted the installer of the phase 2 array for help. They refused to work on a system that they had not installed. I contacted Phoenix and Garret came out to look at the problem. He diagnosed the problem quickly (Inverter gone bad) and prepared a bid to replace it. He also explained the difference between the old inverters on the phase 1 array and the modern inverters. He completed the installation of the new inverter and I am now providing the electricity to PG&e even though they regularly cut off my electricity. I will continue to use Phoenix for all my hvac and solar work, gradually changing over all my maintenance agreements as warranties expire. read more

We have Heat Pump, Solar, and general Electrical Contracting experience with Phoenix; Let me start with the good things, because our initial experience seemed good. Based on their excellent Yelp score, we had Phoenix perform the Home Inspection on the Heat Pump prior to purchase. I didn't meet him personally, but Jason called us after the inspection and just suggested that because of the system age that we should especially keep up with regular services. Static pressures were good and the system looked and operated very well despite the age. After we moved in (February) we were really tight on spare money because of the loan closing costs and such, so we waited until it was getting warmer to call for service. Jason came and did a very friendly and prompt general service of the system. We signed up for the monthly plan which included the typical summer and winter services and a discount on parts for any necessary repairs. Jason seemed great and we never had to remind him to wear booties, which is always an early warning of a lazy/bad tech. The bad (which was most of it): Shortly after the service as we started getting hot and humid days, the laminate floors in our hallway started to bubble outward from the floor level intake vent. We couldn't pinpoint the air conditioner as the source right away because there was no standing water in the closet, but within days the adjoining bedroom carpet was soggy and sopping wet around the closet as well. We still had no standing water in the closet! The condensate pump was working perfectly! Jason came out quickly and discovered there was 20 years of grime built up on the indoor coils, which were causing condensate to drip into the vent and not onto the condensate tray (and then to the pump). There was inches of water in the vent. He cleaned the vents at a roughly 50% discount on the service and admitted openly that he should have checked the coils for buildup during the house inspection. I expressed that I would have immediately had the cleaning service done if we'd been informed, so I was holding Phoenix responsible for any damages resulting from the water. Jason was supposedly going to have the owner Micah call me about it. I ended up calling Micah myself and he initially offered to come an evaluate the damage and offer a solution. When he did come out, is was also to discuss solar options since we were in progress getting quotes at the time. We ended up a bit distracted by Phoenix coming in on par with the lowest bidder for the system. Phoenix was a large company with staff and the competing lower bid was an older, very experienced installer, with no staff. We went with the 'can back up a warranty' option and signed the contract with Phoenix. That part was pretty painless, though they didn't seem to have much experience with different systems, so I felt a little like I was holding their hands. They wanted to install micro-inverters from a brand that, at the time, had a poor reputation for reliability (but a good one for honoring warranty). That brand has since become one of the most reliable micro-inverter brands, so I won't mention them by name with the negative context. In either case, Micah didn't evaluate the water damage and we ended up having a lot of dead end emails and voicemails to him about it. The solar install was done at a very high quality, however we had ongoing issues with the quality of interaction with the installation team. The installer left in charge on site was not Jason or Micah (which we were told it would be), and the actual lead guy left on site was often rude and demeaning to my wife. Since I was at work during most of the install, she was the one in charge and home and they were just not polite, informative, or respectful. At the end of each day there was trash and litter left around in the driveway. The system was installed and operating fine, however they did not install the monitoring unit that was included in our agreement, nor did I receive paperwork to confirm the extended 20 year warranty (vs. 10 years) as agreed. I never was able to get any confirmation of the warranty extension, however I have the agreement to it in writing from Micah via email should we need to enforce it, whether he provides the documentation or not. The same rude installer was set to put in the monitoring unit and we had to have them come out with Jason to fix the poor install quality after the fact. We had them install a 220V dryer plug for my EVSE (EV charging equipment) as well since they were already on site, and they installed the plug upside down. They did correct the plug orientation later, however when I finally connected the EVSE later on I discovered in the process they had broken some of the bare wire ends through over-bending. I reinstalled it myself with unbroken wire and it works fine. They did not pull a permit for the plug even though I had requested it when we agreed upon the service. Still no resolution on the floor damage. read more

UPDATE: After having the solar up and running for three full billing cycles I am beyond amazed at the reduction in our electricity bill! During the last three months we have had our AC on 24/7 and the bills just keep getting smaller - our last PGE bill was $9.86 (compared to $575 same month last year). The bill before that was $11.82...so the cost savings is huge and we have guilt-free AC! I can't say enough good things about the professionalism and quality of work from this company. They completed a solar install for us last week and did a great job. The team arrived early every morning, worked all day, kept their working area clean and were incredibly professional to deal with. I received quotes from about 6 different solar companies and ultimately went with Phoenix Energy Solutions. While their quote was not the least expensive I absolutely believe you get what you pay for. Micah Gilmore was prompt at returning phone calls and emails and answering all our questions. They were also very flexible to our schedule as we had to delay the install by a few days to fix a leak in our roof. They handled all the design layouts, securing the permits, etc. Complete end to end customer service. We are now waiting for PG&E to come out and update our box so we aren't running on solar yet, but we are thrilled with the company we chose to make our home more energy efficient. read more

I responded to another firm's "energy audit" informercial and had that company come in a check many aspects of my home's energy footprint. This other firm found many things that I could improve and a few things that, frankly, were a bit gimmicky. And expensive! Oh my... they proposed replacing my well-functioning system entirely for many thousands of dollars. I called Phoenix again, based on my positive experience with them last fall and had them review the tick-list of proposed projects. They made several suggestions to accomplish the same energy saving results and for many many hundreds of dollars less out of my pocket. They came and did the work this week - correcting some duct work defects, enlarging the amount of air flowing back into the HVAC system, ensuring that my airflow system is as air-tight as can be and then replacing a hot water recirculating pump. I had concerns about the low volume of air entering my master bedroom and they solved it with a better register and adding a return to that room. They showed up on time, were as clean as kittens and polite as you would expect from guests in your home. These guys are solid professionals and have completely earned my trust. There appears to be a plethora (love that word!) of HVAC contractors in the Sacramento area and I suspect a few of them are slick operators. Phoenix is a huge exception - from their receptionist who answers the phone to the owner who takes a personal interest in each customer to the techs who show up on time and do the work cleanly and efficiently, this is a quality company. read more

We took advantage of a Fall Tuneup special and had PES come out to our home in Fair Oaks. Fortunately, all was well - no expensive repairs! The technician did point out that our furnace was capable of 2-speed operation, but the thermostat was not. So our furnace was always coming on at full-speed, like it or not. He proposed a replacement thermostat, and told me it was something I could probably install myself. That impressed me, but I went ahead and had Phoenix do it, since work keeps me very busy. Happy to join the choir singing Hallelujahs to Phoenix Energy Systems. Sob Story: AC conked out during the pre-4th of July weekend on the hottest week of the year. Warranty company's (First American-DO NOT USE THEM) tech was overbooked and came out July 3. Said some mumbo jumbo about the unit being too small (it is) for the house and not having enough draw to pull the cold air from the outside unit into the house. AC HAD to be replaced. First American wouldn't authorize the replacement OR the repair (due to unit being too small). Asked for a quote and bid, and never heard from them again. Happy News: emailed PES who of three highly rated HVAC companies was the ONLY one to respond (I'm hard of hearing and don't use phone). Rich came out ON THE DOT (none of this four hour window stuff), to give an estimate for a new unit. Rich said "Let's see if we can fix it, before we replace it". 10 minutes later comes down from the attic with a motor assembly-seized, stuck, and frozen. "I don't have the motor, but once I order it, it's a 20 minute job, unit will run fine" Yes, it was close to $600. No, First American wouldn't cover it, since I didn't use THEIR (crooked) contractor. Yes, it's a LOT cheaper than 5-7K for a new unit. Rich came back a few days later with the new part BEFORE the appointed time, dropped in the new motor, ran some tests, and now we have AC. First American can die in Phoenix's fire. At some point, we will need a bigger unit to accomodate our actual square footage, but for now, the house is cool, comfortable (it runs warmer on the kid's side, but well below the danger point of when we didn't have AC-I used fans and kept the kids in the master suite with me). And when we DO replace our unit-I don't need Yelp-I'll just call Phoenix Energy Systems and you should too! PS-this is the service that made me join Yelp, so I can give Rich and PES 5 stars (and not 10 as others have noted). read more

We had Phoenix Energy Solutions thoroughly evaluate our 26 year old HVAC system including checking temperature and air flow volumes at each vent in our home. We had Micah Gilmore and his team remove our Central Heating unit from our attic by cutting a very large hole in our hallway ceiling and installing a new unit in its place. New ducting was replaced as needed. A much larger return vent was installed, and then the ceiling was repaired, textured, and painted. It looks perfect. Next they replaced our A/C unit with a higher capacity unit that is perfectly rated for our home. They were great to explain our options and avoid installing any over-sized units. They also included a noise reduction system which has made our HVAC system whisper quiet. Next they installed a new programmable Thermostat which is remotely controlled from our cell phones. The whole system works beautifully. We have been so impressed with the cleanliness, the professional treatment, the friendliness, and ease of handling the paperwork and costs.
