The service is quick, the food is incredible and CHEAP. I'm aware that the Broadway and Argyle area is saturated with pho restaurants, but Pho Viet trumps all others. You'll most likely find the cooks quietly gambling on whatever game happens to be on the TV...and I'm pretty sure its an unofficial hangout for local Vietnamese "massage therapists". My wife and I had to decide if it was 4 or 5 stars. We definitely liked the place. The menu is extensive and the food cooked with care. The owner - works his butt off - is there 7 days a week - and takes pride in what he does. The environment is somewhat tired - and having spent time in Vietnam - is somewhat reminiscent of places were in there. It is a bit tired by US standards - and if you can get beyond it - the food is GREAT. The staff could not be more attentive and considerate - willing to modify dishes to suit your taste and diet. There are more than 200 items to choose from - all reasonably priced. After having eaten in Tank and Pho 777 - we are pleased to find a new place. It should be better known and busier - but it doesn't have the "bling" or reputation of other more popular places in the area. We liked it so much that we are considering contacting our social network and inviting people to join us there one Friday or Saturday night soon. For the price, quality of food, kindness and care of the owner and staff - it would be hard to give a stronger recommendation. You will like it! read more

This pho was the best I've had in the city. It blew other restaurants (like the well-known star of Check Please!, Tank Noodle) out of the water. The waitstaff was so accommodating, lovely, and had great recommendations. Our gentleman server brought us to the table, asked if it was okay, offered us tea and water, and was just so nice throughout. He was very knowledgeable about what had soy and what did not (since I cannot eat gluten). It was also helpful that the type of noodle (rice, egg) or rice paper was very clearly marked on the menu. He was very attentive, answered any questions, and offered us extra sauces, etc. It almost felt like we were dining at his home, he was that lovely. We started with spring rolls with pork, shrimp, and vermicelli and they were so fresh and amazing. The strawberry banana smoothie with tapioca was also fresh and delicious. Finally, the pho was excellent. We had two types (duck and mixed beef) and they were amazing! We couldn't finish them even though we wanted to because it was so much food. Did I mention for all that it was $37 including a 22% tip? That's pretty good for amazing food and a Friday night out. My recommendation - skip Tank and head next door for Pho Viet, they are way nicer, actually thankful to have your business, the food is better, and you'll be glad you did. read more

Very decent.. Compared to the other Viet places visited, this one is better. Overall, the food was decent. I ordered the Seafood Stir Fry. Not bad.. SO AWFUL that we're still laughing about it. The staff's family was eating there with a child who was throwing toothpicks onto our table. When we complained, they did nothing about it. Mass Confusion brought the waiter, chef and other staff to our table because they couldn't tell who was supposed to get what food... and they didn't know what it was that each of us had. Kept arguing with each other about what # off the menu we had... and what that was. They had no idea what Orange Chicken vs Sweet n Sour Chicken was. Speaking of Sweet and Sour chicken... I had the most basic pho, similar to a chicken soup - nothing amazing. As I said, service was an issue because of the communication barrier. I am not crazy about the food here to begin with, but I thought if the service is ok I can deal with it. It was a mistake! We waited 45 mins and didn't even get our appetizers. Eventually the waiter/manager told us they are under staff and they can't make the appetizers, whats bad is previouosly he told us they don't have time to make the smoothies either. So what can we order? I understand they are busy, but I still want my food. So me and my friends just want to cancel our orders and leave to eat some where else. But the waiter/manager dude through a fit about us leave, and eat curse at us and told us to get the F*** out. What I hate more, the owner was there and she didn't even do anything. If it was that busy, she would have run the floors but she didn't. I would not recommend this place for anybody. The food is mediocre and the service is horrible. Well, after having a horrible experience back home in Philly... my boyfriend and I decided to give Vietnamese food another chance. We both love trying foods and figured there had to be a good place out there- and I think we found a pretty decent place here. Pho Viet, while yes it does look like a strange cafeteria or diner- has extremely friendly service and good food. I ordered the marinated beef with noodles and a spring roll and my boy ordered some REALLY tasty marinated grilled chicken with rice- came with a salad and soup. I used to go here all the time and was not only disheartened but surprised to find out it closed down several months ago due to health code violations. I always had a good meal complete with top notch service here. So, my girlfriend and I were pleased to walk by and see it re-opened the other day. It was as good as I remember it. The prices are beyond reasonable and my girlfriend always gets and loves their pho. I like to get a noodle rice dish with marinated pork and shrimp and it never lets me down. My friend and I settled on Pho Viet after we had found out that Tank Noodle (our original destination) was closed. We were faced with a mind-numbing amount of choices for Pho. After walking around a couple blocks we decided to choose a restaurant for the sole reason that it was devoid of white people (sometimes a good sign that the food will be tasty; when in doubt). We both ordered the combination Pho (rare meat, brisket, tripe, sausage, and tendon). The broth was a little weak....the meat didn't really permeate into it well. All of the meats were okay except for the tendon which was a little more grisly than I am used to. Overall, the price was amazing ($7!!!!!) and I was sufficiently full after the meal. Is it legal to marry food in the state of Illinois? Pho Viet condiments alone are enough to hit 5 stars. Good spring rolls and pho broth... I drank the broth with a straw after I ate the solids. First time I had tripe: It exists solely for texture so don't be afraid. I didn't want to leave and obsessed for days afterward. The place was full but service was fast and it didn't feel crowded. I will return with family and friends. Beware the slice of green pepper that resembles jalapeno--it's a thousand times hotter, but easily avoided. Not the best pho in town but I find myself here quite a lot for many reasons. It's spacious, service is generally good and the menu is big; so it's easy for large groups with different tastes. They have got noodles, rice, and everything in between. Taste of the food was decent, nothing to shout about. I once had an employee questioned the choice for my order and I will never forget it. The item that I ordered had shrimp paste in it and being from South East Asia, I am familiar with it and I understood that it can be quite pungent. He asked me somewhat condescendingly three times, each time warning that the taste could be overwhelming. Despite not looking one bit like Vietnamese, he seemed cocky with his knowledge of the menu. Maybe it was the way he said it but I certainly do not appreciate anyone asking me with that tone. Now that I think about it, I actually haven't been back since. This past Wednesday my friend and I planned to go to Tank, but unfortunately it's closed on Wednesdays. So we came here since its down the street from tank. Service was fast; you will get seated quickly. The staff came to u to get your order. Costs of the food is cheaper than Tank . However the food here is not that great. The soup base is bland. No taste at all... They didn't provide you enough meat. The mint leaves didn't look so green (more like black). I have more to say but to make things short, I won't be coming back here. When gathering dust distracts you from your meal, it's not a good thing. When that dust is gathering on Christmas decorations on your table as you dine in the middle of June-- that's a bit worse. As with other mom and pop ethnic restaurants, I want to love the place, especially since they have karaoke and dance space in the back, where I could definitely see myself throwing a raucous party in the future. I would have overlooked the cleanliness issues for this added entertainment perk, but alas, the food was mediocre. Although the pho was flavorful and huge, it was not memorable. The banh xeo was almost too large to fit on the table, which is always exciting at first for the Vietnamese food glutten, but it was nearly deep fried to greasiness and the egg pancake mixture was too thick, creating with a gooey texture. The dipping sauce was subpar. There is still no banh xeo in Chicago that can hold a candle to Tank, except maybe the real deal in Saigon. I will keep up the search! read more

Normally I get the Pho when I roll here but the other day I strayed, and for this I am disappointed. The dish that I ordered isn't worth mentioning, but I owe it to you to at least give you a heads up. Seafood Combo Noodle Soup W/ Yellow Noodle jumbo shrimps, squid and crab claw--This dish while packed with plenty of seafood was just a big bowl of boring. Sure the seafood was tasty, but the broth was really lackluster. I literally had to dump a ton of fish sauce, sriracha, soy, and whatever else I could get my hands upon to give the broth some flavor. Damn!!! Other than that this place is typically solid when it comes to Pho. I suppose it's my own fault since I strayed, but one other time I veered off and ordered some random dish that was packed with Star Anise and was really tasty, but of course I can't remember the name. All in all this place is solid. They have a friendly staff, and good prices/portions. The two main reasons why I would come here over other places are: The service is pretty absurd. The guy spent a solid 30 seconds rearranging everything on our table for setting down some spring rolls. Totally unnecessary but the earnestness was much appreciated. The spring rolls are pretty awesome. They're super tightly rolled with the right amount of flavor from each component where I didn't feel that one was overpowered by the other. Other than that I thought the pho was decent (liked it better than Tank) and I had the bo luc lac (shaking beef) and that was only ok as well. I like it more on the rare side with huge chunks of garlic. No amount of garlic was to be seen here and these were thoroughly well done. We pretty much agreed that we're gonna try a new pho place once a week so we probably won't be back here anytime soon, but if someone's craving spring rolls this will be the first place I'll bring up. read more

The food and service here got better. We had an older person waiting on us which might be why it was better. The younger staffs were too carefree from my observation. Went here for a friend's dinner party - It was a set course of 8 dishes 1. Spring rolls - these aren't your normal spring rolls, they have a fried egg roll wrapper, nam (ham) and carrots. I gathered up 14 of my friends to try Tank Noodle on my birthday last month. We got up to the door and realized they were closed. Damn. So, we migrated to Pho Viet. What I really liked about this place was that the servers were extremely nice and helpful. They took the time to give suggestions and were on top of filling up waters, etc. They were much, much nicer than the staff at Tank. BUT... I can't say that the food I tried was up to par. The spring rolls with shrimp and pork were pretty good. For my entree, I had a rice noodle dish with some sort of shrimp patty, pork patty and I think chicken patty? I wasn't sure what was in there. But it was pretty dry altogether. I wish I had gotten something with broth. I ended up throwing my leftover peanut sauce from the spring rolls in order to get it more swallowable lol. The experience was pretty good. I'd give it another try if I couldn't eat at Tank for some reason, but I don't know that I'd be running back. I was a bit skeptical because of the interior decor (too nice for a good Vietnamese place), but was not totally disappointed. We started with spring rolls and they were sufficient. A little heavy on the rice noodles, but not terrible. We then ordered bun rieu (my usual crab and tomato noodle soup--yum! but cabbage instead of bean sprouts on my veggie plate?) and the combination cold noodles (which were good--the grilled pork tasted like a drier version of my aunt's--but could have used more pickled veggies). The avocado shake was tasty but came with tapioca balls when I specifically asked for no balls. Oh well. Usually you have to beg for water in Asian restaurants. This place is our usual Pho spot in the Uptown neighborhood. Fast friendly service and the best Pho we ever had! We go to Pho Viet probably 3 times a month and every time we go there, the staff remembers us and says hi! Love it when a restaurant that you go to a lot remembers you. Makes you feel special. Parking can be difficult but we usually find meter parking on Argyle. Be ready to be freaked out walking from your car to the restaurant because there a SO many weird crazy people hanging out on the street. Don't worry though, they won't hurt you. We order a #41 - which is called Pho Tai. I totally recommend this because the meat is the eye of round steak. No sketchy fatty meat!!! read more

Was super happy with this place! With a friend, had traditional pho and a duck noodle dish (with egg noodles, not sure of the name) and fresh vegetarian spring rolls. All ware delicious and fresh, and preferable to Tank Noodle down the street, for flavor, setting, and service, and now Pho Viet is going to be my go-to for great pho. Inexpensive as well. I've been very impressed with Pho Viet. I've ordered via GrubHub two times, and both times I have been very happy with the food quality, speed of delivery and service. The first time I ordered, I got pho, fried rice and a beef stick appetizer. The pho was hot and plentiful. I found the broth to be delicious and flavorful, despite what I've read here from others. They put so much meat in there, I was stuffed after! The beef appetizer was just okay, good, but noting mind blowing. The chicken fried rice was probably the best fried rice I've ever eaten in my life. I crave this stuff now. My second order didn't let me down either. Again, the chicken fried rice is a must.
