Waited at least 20 minutes and nobody acknowledged us so my boyfriend has to go up to the register just to ask for menus. (It's a seat yourself restaurant) After asking for the menus it took another 10 minutes to get the menus!!! We came in at 8:50 and didn't get our food until 9:45...... we also saw and heard two coworkers arguing about the fact that we had been waiting with no assistance for an extended period of time. As someone who has worked and been involved in the restaurant industry for years, I've seen/experienced a lot of amazing customer service and I've also seen/experienced a lot of bad customer service. I've never written a Yelp review since joining in 2014. However, I feel that my recent experience at Pho Thaison warrants a review. If nothing else, than to warn others of what you could be dealing with. We've been eating at Pho Thaison since I moved to San Marcos back in October 2014. It's not the most amazing Vietnamese food, but it's pretty good, the prices are decent and I've never had issue with either eating in or to go orders. So it caught me off guard when I recently called in a pick up order of 4 sushi rolls to go. The order was pretty easy. I asked the person taking the order if I could take off avocado from the rolls as the person I was eating with does not eat avocado. I asked if I could replace the avocado with another vegetable. They had to ask the person making the sushi, then came back and said yes. I asked to replace it with green peppers. They had to check again, but then came back and said that they didn't have green peppers for rolls, so I said "OK, then maybe carrots?" The employee said "we also have jalapenos" to which I answered "no. not jalapenos. carrots would work just fine." I said "We don't want jalapenos on the rolls." At this point the employee said "OK, got it." I even triple checked to make sure there wouldn't be jalapenos. When I got home, to my surprise every single roll had jalapenos. There appeared to have been a break down in communication somewhere between the person taking the order and them explaining it to the person preparing the food, because this was the exact opposite of what I had ordered. I figured, no big deal, let me call them to let them know of the mistake. They can remake the order and I'll come in and trade out the wrong for the right. When I called, the person on the phone seemed confused by what I was telling them. I calmly explained myself a few times at which point he put me on hold to take to his owner. He came back on the line and said "no, sorry sir, there is nothing we can do." I thought that maybe I wasn't being understood. Maybe, like before, something got lost in translation. Nope. The employee once again said "no, there's nothing we can do. We won't remake the order, nor, give you your money back." Unbelievable. I asked to speak to the owner. The owner got on the phone and proceeded to yell at me saying "you changed your order. It's your fault not mine. No money back, no new order." That was the whole reason I asked them if they could substitute. To avoid such an incident. I told him that this was unacceptable and that either he would refund my money, or fix the order. Period. He hung up on me. I called back only to have someone else take the phone and very angrily tell me "bring food we give money back." We came back with the exact bag of food that I had picked up. The owner proceeds to go through and make sure that every roll was still in the bag. He does this while he is telling me that it's "my fault." He tells me how "I am never to never change his menu". He says that he asked his employee and that they said I was lying which in untrue. He never once offered an apology or to remake us food. He never gave us any sort of reason to ever want to return to his restaurant. Luckily, in the end, I got my money back. But not before telling him how disappointed we were. How he showed no respect to the customer. How we would not be back to his place of business. He seemed unapologetic and unconcerned that he just lost customer(s). San Marcos, Kyle, Buda...they're all growing. More and more business' are coming to this area. It is of my opinion that to really have a strong name, to stand out not just get away with what you can get away with, one really has to have a great product, great staff that offer great customer service. We had to make an emergency run up to the Chase Bank in Kyle to avoid overdraft fees today. While we were up there, we decided to finally try the Vietnamese place in the shopping center with the HEB Plus. The BF and I had both had pho before at a place in Houston and were curious to see whether we could find an Asian restaurant near to us that we enjoy besides Thai Thai. We got there around noon and there was only one other couple in the place. The interior was brand new and filled with natural light from the big windows on two sides of the dining area. We opted for a booth and took our seats. They have a really wide selection of pho from plain old beef to brisket, flank, tendon, tripe pho (or, as we called it, "everything but the kitchen sink pho"). We like tripe, but both of us were feeling a little tame this morning so I ordered a shrimp spring roll and chicken pho and the BF ordered brisket pho. We also noted that they had bubble tea on the menu and asked if it was made with fresh fruit or powder. I've been burned by nasty powdered bubble teas too often to not be wary when the kid serving us said it was all fresh fruit except for the taro bubble tea, but we went ahead and got two avocado bubble teas as well. My spring roll with peanut sauce came out first. It was pretty much a standard shrimp spring roll. Nothing really stood out about it and the sauce was decent, though a bit earthier and less sweet than I like. Altogether, it was pretty bland but decent. Our pho came out next with the requisite plate of garnishes. I feel like they're playing it really safe with the flavors here. Maybe it's because we ordered some pretty simple pho, but nothing about the soup really stood out, even with a bunch of lime juice, cilantro, basil, and soy sauce added in. There also wasn't a whole lot going on in the soup itself. My chicken pho had white meat, dark meat, onions, chives, and noodles in it and nothing else until I added the garnishes. I would have liked a little more vegetable matter in there, but I think having that added for a small fee was an option on the menu that I might have overlooked. The portions are freaking huge, so I ended up taking half of my pho home with us. The pho was good but not great and was worth a three-star rating, but the bubble tea pushed it over into four-star territory. It really was made with fresh avocado, and it was super delicious if too strongly sweetened for my tastes. We've been looking for good bubble around San Marcos since we moved down here from Chicago, and I think we finally found our spot. Good thing it's not too close to where we live or I'd definitely put on a few pounds of bubble tea weight. I'm not sure how relevant this is to other Yelpers, but I was also impressed that our young waiter was using an empty table during this slow Saturday afternoon to study. I've taught enough biology labs by now to just assume that no one in or around San Marcos knows how to study for anything, but seeing him at a table reading and taking notes out of a text book filled me with a nerdy euphoria that's hard to describe. The kid doesn't know it, but he earned himself an extra dollar on his tip, just for studying. Altogether, Pho Thaison is a pretty solid pho establishment, but I don't think we'll be going out of our way to get here when we can get better Asian cuisine at Thai Thai. Still, the next time we have to go up to Kyle for some reason we'll probably stop by and try a more adventurous pho flavor. But we won't be sitting in the booths again. The seats for the booths are movable, and halfway through our meal a gigantic woman sat in the booth behind me and adjusted her seat back, abruptly introducing my sternum to our table. I have been here several times and the food has been OK but the service has always been less than stellar. Today I came in and ordered a spring roll and pho. A short time later the waiter comes out with my spring roll and a set of utencils/napkin. I opened my napkin to grab the chopsticks and found a curly black hair (pu&$). The waiter comes around shortly after and I make him aware of the situation. He shruggs it off as if its nothing. And sits down another set of utencils and walks off. I'm Vietnamese, grew up eating Vietnamese food and my mom is a great cook. I like the Austin location better, though that one is just okay too. Oh well, I was in Kyle for one of my kids' competitions and this beat the other choices out there (fast food and what not). I got the spider roll which was okay except for a slight acid aftertaste. Maybe too much rice wine vinegar. It was okay. My main dish was bun thit nuong tom (the vermicelli noodle dish with grilled lemongrass pork and shrimp). LOL Mine had 2 small pieces of shrimp and one minuscule one. That was it. Oh well, I guess they charged $0.25 more for the shrimp and so I guess they give you a quarter's worth of shrimp. My biggest problem with my bun is that the nuoc mam is really bland and weak. I don't know if they "Americanized" it but I have lived in American almost all of my life and my American friends like nuoc mam strong and flavorful. I ate half of it and then took it home, and put my own homemade nuoc mam on it and it was a hundred times better. As mentioned above, I think their William Cannon location is better though it's been a while since I've been there. I try not to be too critical of Vietnamese restaurants in Austin because, hey, I live in S. Austin and a little of sub-par is better than nothing. So if I lived in Kyle I'd go here again but only bc the other options are zilch for Vietnamese food. Clearly the best way to get Vietnamese food is to go to Houston..... read more

Veronica and Mindy always have smiles on their faces and do a great job checking on our table throughout our time there. This place has been a 'go to' place for me, being a vegan. My wife and daughter accompanied me this trip, Sunday afternoon. My wife typically likes Chinese food, as does my daughter. Unfortunately, she ordered the curried chicken. She ate 1 or 2 bites and then stated she couldn't eat any more. She complained that the 'mystery meat' was primarily fat and gristle. She lost her appetite with that. My daughter got a meat dish in rosy colored sauce, and ate half, without much comment., I got the tofu and vegetables, which is typically what I get. The sauce was overly salty, and was sticky and stringy. I have never had an asian sauce that pulled into strings like this before. I ate some, but feared that I would become sick if I continued. I imagine the waitress was new to the job. She was sweet, but didn't ask why we didn't eat much of the food, and declined to go boxes. I think she was the only waitress most of the time, in a fairly moderately busy restaurant. $40 spent on uneaten food, and then we had to get food elsewhere. Pho Thaison has fallen from one of my favorite restaurants in Kyle to one that I will avoid at all costs from today on. The best pho I've found in Hays county. It's a little pricey but the broth is good, the meat is fresh and the service is solid. We've tried their sushi, some appetizers and are overall satisfied when we eat there. Their boba tea is horrible but that's really my only complaint. read more

Their Pho rice noodle soup has no flavor. I normally love this soup and am addicted to it. Theirs just is not good. I had their chicken Pho, the meat was very dry, broth was tastless. I tried the Tofu Pho soup, this broth had a little more flavor then the chicken. My husband had a rice dish and said it had no flavor. He had to cover it in soy sauce to eat it. Went there for lunch yesterday with my boyfriend & his kids.... service was less than adequate. The young man that was our first waiter was not overly friendly or helpful. As an inexperienced person of pho, he was not helpful in regards to menu suggestions & even a bit sarcastic. The food was fair to ok, but nothing great by any means. The lemonade was overly watered down & tasted more like sweet water with a hint of lemon. The prices were nothing special. Since one of the kids was younger, we asked if there was a kid's menu & the young person (our 1st waiter) just answered "no", but didn't bother to share that the menu items could be cut into smaller sizes to be kid's portions (we found that out when we ordered & an older man came to take the order. I'm so happy that there is something other than fried food, fast food and pizza in Kyle. That said, there are some serious pros and cons to this place. Both times I went, it was pretty empty, which is nice. Less people = less people being annoying by a whiny toddler (sitting at our booth). Service was bad both times. On our first visit, the waiter asked us for our drink order three (!) times, and asked me repeatedly if I had ordered Sprite. No...unsweetened iced tea, please. Weird. I tried the beef bun and not only was it huge (like big enough for two people), but it was pretty solid. Not the best I've ever had, but good! The beef was tasty, but I would have liked more peanuts and perhaps some fresh herbs (mint, etc.). My husband got sushi, and I was kind of scared for him. It actually seemed pretty good. Yes, it may be frozen (we weren't sure) and it probably isn't the best place to go for sushi, but for Kyle it is pretty decent. They don't have a kids menu, which is kind of annoying and a blessing in disguise. Because they have rice and steamed veggies as little add ons, I was able to get my son a plate of brocolli and rice for $2 and he loved it. Score! read more

Honestly, I thought this was a knock-off of the restaurant on William Cannon and Brodie. However, I was desperate for Vietnamese food in Kyle and decided to try it out. Upon arrival, I noticed the son of Pho Thaison (from South Austin) was greeting us. Immediately, my wife and I knew we were going to be in for a treat. We have been going to the S. ATX location for 16 years and watched this family oriented jewel flourish in the midst of Austin's boom. Their food is top notch and the family will help guide you through the menu to really point you towards something genuinely close to your heart when it comes to comfort food. I have never had anything I didn't like! Recommendations: Beef Stew Any of the PHOs Salmon Belly Ginger (clay pot) Again, top notch service that really reflects the effort put into their delicious recipes. Kyle has come a long way since your only choice for a meal out was the Dairy Queen.(which I love!) However Kyle is growing rapidly and new restaurants are popping up every where. I was really excited to find a Vietnamese restaurant here. I wasn't sure what to expect upon walking in on a lovely Sunday morning but I'm glad I did. I had the Pad Thai with tofu and it was delicious. The prices are fairly cheap considering how much food you get. The service was average. EVERYTHING HAS IMPROVED! We went here for dinner tonight and have to give compliments to the chef as well as the wait staff! There were 7 of us in our party and we ordered 3 sushi rolls along with our entrees. All of our food and the sushi had excellent flavors and textures. Everything came out promptly and our server was very attentive. I know that the servers are new and willing to bet that the chef has changed as well. I usually eat at Pho Thaison @ Southpark Meadows, but finally had the chance to try the one in Kyle. It just happens to be across the parking lot from the salon I work at. I ordered my usual; Pho Tai and was very pleased. I am so happy to have this place so close. read more
