I don't know why I kept giving this place another chance... but never again. They have gotten my order wrong every single time I have called it in, and they never stand by fixing it or replacing it. They just shrug and tell me I can buy another dish. They name everything weird, off the Thai standards, so if you order pineapple fried rice, you actually get "stir fried pineapple, with rice" and "pad kee mao", an extremely common noodle dish, arrives as "kee mao," a rice dish. They make no effort to try to clarify, understand, or making things rice. And the food is fine and overpriced. There are way better thai places in town, with far better service. Go there, please. If you're going to charge $20 for a rice dish, at least try to get it right and stand by your product. read more

Service excellence they have vegan options for my sister. Ordered the crispy pad Thai egg rolls so worth it. Fat fully stuffed deliciousness and the sauce amplifies the flavor. Highly recommend. Still a fan. Another speedy delivery beating the ETA and friendly driver left it at the door as requested (you're routed through GrubHub if you order via Yelp). They included napkins/utensils as usual in the bag. CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM still super frosty and they even drizzled chocolate syrup over the top. THAI GREEN TEA lovely, creamy. I don't drink a lot of tea but I'm enjoying this cold on an overcast day and imagine I'll enjoy it at least as much come summertime. GOLDEN SHRIMP ROLLS and accompanying plum sauce remain dependably tasty. KANOM JEEP is today's best surprise. Listed as a steamed dumpling, it arrived looking like a tiny tart or savory muffin with the filling cresting out of the wrapped bottom/sides (not closed like pierogi/gyoza). Dinner tonight was Shaiyo ordered to go. We shared the shrimp rolls, and she got the gang-mussaman curry, while I got the larb. I'd never had larb before, and I was quite happy with it. Larb, as the menu describes, is "Ground meat mixed with lime dressing, rice powder, red onion, green onion, cilantro, in lettuce bed." I got beef for the protein and the next to mildest level of spicy--Thai restaurants are a whole 'nother level of spicy. The larb was fantastic: the red and green onion and lettuce do a nice job of counterbalancing and lightening up the meat. The chopped red onions also have a very nice kick that add to the chilis. There's also a side of rice as well. The shrimp rolls, which are like egg rolls but smaller, each wrapped around a whole shrimp, are likewise quite delicious. The wrapping blends in wonderfully with the shrimp flavor. The food was outstanding, and the speed of the order was excellent as well. I headed out almost as soon as my spouse had placed the order, and by the time I arrived at Shaiyo the food was ready. Really first rate. read more

I've had a lot of Tom kha. When I opened it the smell was right on, I was very excited. But when I saw it I noticed it was lacking that white creamy broth I know it for and love. I give it a shot anyways. It's so watered down. I can't believe it it breaks my heart. It has the right spices but it's bland and so watery :( I also ordered the 1 in spice was and it has NO spice which is crazy. Not creamy and not very flavorful. Won't get again :/ read more

We stopped in for dinner on a whim. The sushi place we were originally going to visit wasn't open until later. We looked over the menu and got some pad egg rolls while we were deciding on entrees. The egg rolls were hot and filled with fresh veggies. I decided on beef pad Thai for my entree. My husband and son chose Kao Mun Gai. Which turned out to be a lovely ginger chicken over rice with ginger soup. We all ordered the #3 spice. Turns out my husband and I worked have been good with the level 2 spice. They do have a limited bar selection so we ordered sake to accompany our meal. Overall a very pleasing experience. We will be back. read more

My wife and I were out and about (foregoing pickleball play due to minor injury and opting to do some post Black Friday shopping instead) and decided to try this place out after reading Yelp recommendations. We've been in this strip mall close to TX State numerous times but we've never been here. We got there before noon on a Tuesday and we were the first ones there. We were told to sit anywhere and just happened to sit at a table without a QR code display to access the menu...of course the guy never presented a menu nor told us about the QR code. After checking out the menu, we ordered some fried spring rolls and told the lone server we needed more time to decide on what else to order. After what felt like a long while, he came back and told him we're ready to order. My wife ordered their Pad See Ew with tofu (ordered mild but what was served was spicy) and I ordered the Pad Ka Prao with ground pork (ordered spicy but what came was extremely spicy as depicted on the receipt). Oh yeah, we never did get the spring rolls we ordered. Aside from the added spiciness, we thought the flavors were decent. My wife thought her dish looked lighter in color than what she prefers but she liked the flavor. My dish tasted a bit saltier than it should be, I thought. Portion sizes were good. While the flavors were good, service was lacking. It looked like there was only 1 server and there was too much waiting. I guess we shouldn't be surprised by the lackluster service as a few Yelpers echoed the same thing. Lunch for 2, without the spring rolls, came out to just over $37 with tip. We'll probably be back (slim pickings for Thai cuisine in SMTX) but will be prepared for less than stellar service. read more

I've never been the guy to go full throttle with Asian recommendations for San Marcos. The Chinese Buffets are pretty terrible; more success with some mom and pop type places covering Chinese and Thai. GF and I were headed south on 35 and zeroed in on Shaiyou Thai on a recent weekend. Consulted fellow Yelper Ardie S. about changes on the back side of the university as I don't visit this area often. Chatted about the state of the SM dining scene as he worked in the area for many years. We arrive to see a few diners; place is mostly empty. Yet, took a bit for service to get going. I did my Yelp due diligence ordering various apps to start. The Spring Rolls were unique adding pineapple to the usual ingredients inside the wrapper. The shumai style dumplings had an interesting name (Kanom Jeep) that I hadn't seen or heard of before. Add in some Crab Rangoon for that creamy and crunchy elements! Solid starters all around paired with the provided sauces. GF moved onto her Pad Thai without no spice added. Yes, there was massive leftovers! She had no complaints about her entree. Me being spice forward I ordered the Panang Curry 4 out of 5. That translated to extremely spicy on the check. The dish was a flavor bomb from the first bite. Head sweating, bathroom breaks for towels to the forehead type dish. Exactly what I was looking for. Yet, the dish bordered on salty. Once the rice soaked in the next day it was really good. The bad news... I order nearly the spiciest level on the menu and the server never returned to refill drinks. Me holding up my glass while he was in was in visual distance didn't even help. This place is definitely underrated and is honestly my favorite in san marcos. Every time i come here, they never disappoint. I had a pad see-ew with level 2 spiciness and it was just the right amount of spice for me. I also had a thai tea which was absolutely yummy. I now have come to this restaurant twice with my teens. The first time the food was hot, tasty, and well presented, so despite the very low level ambience, we returned the next week. On our second visit, my son's meat on his pad kee mao was tough and veggies were overcooked, my daughter's pad woon sen was a lunch portion size at a dinner price, and my tom kha $4 shrimp portion only included 3 shrimp rather than the 5-6 shrimp that arrived last week for the same price. My server tried to explain to the management that there should be a consistent amount of shrimp for the price of protein, but the manager didn't understand the concept and wouldn't lower the protein price or add more shrimp. My server was diligent in trying to have this challenge corrected so he hadn't noticed that we needed water refills, but he was otherwise very attentive. The prices for the entrees are priced normally on the menu, except that, once you add in the additional charge for protein, the final price is higher than every other Thai restaurant I've been to. And I've been to a lot in many cities the world over. As well, usually rice is included in the price of a bowl or hot pot of soup, but here, they charge an additional $2.50 for rice. The nickel-and-diming for everything and inconsistency was disappointing, which combined with its 0 ambience, makes me hesitate to return for a third visit. read more

The food didn't feel "fresh" which was probably why I wouldn't return but the food was good. The pad Thai crispy spring rolls were just a little greasy, but tasted fine. The drunken noodles from this place made Shaiyo my new favorite Thai restaurant. Coated in a slightly sweet, savory sauce, the noodles were tender and chewy at the same time and just... addicting. I subbed mushrooms for extra bell peppers. Portion was large and price was great. Spice level 1 was perfect for me. Bf had the green curry with pork and extra veggies. His portion was HUGE and spice level 2 was just a bit much for him (and he likes spicy). We had the fried bananas and ice cream for dessert which was an alright dish, but we def enjoyed cooling our mouths off lol. Recently moved to Kyle and so frustrated by lack of good Thai restaurants nearby. I've been to 10 and except for My Thai, each was disappointing - until I visited Shaiyo today. Wow, what a great Pad Woon Sen. yes, only 5 shrimp with the order, but they were medium sized and fresh - excellent quality. I ordered 3 star and it was right in the money. I've been to Asia over 80x and eating Thai food for over 40 years, and this is the best Thai meal I've had between San Marcos and Austin. The owner is the cook and it is a family restaurant with a lot of interest in customers enjoying the food. Cannot wait to return! read more

Decent Thai food. I ordered via Uber Eats and got a very spicy chicken panang curry and crab puffs. I was surprised that the curry literally was all chicken and no bell peppers were added (something I've grown accustomed to from other Thai restaurants over the years) would be nice if it wasn't extra to add them in just to give the dish contrast but I was impressed with the amount of protein definitely worth the $2 up charge. The spice level was more of a medium spice than expected. The crab puffs were a let down, I don't know if it's the wrapper they used or maybe the oil for frying needs to be changed out but they tasted stale. Would try again! read more

I have visited Shaiyo Thai twice in the last month for lunch, and I really like this restaurant! The first time I ordered the panang curry with tofu, and it was exceptional. The spice flavors are delicious, and the portion was enough for me to bring some for a smaller snack the next day. I also tried my friends' green curry and the yellow curry, and they were all delicious. We tried fried pad thai. It was new and different, but it would not be my favorite appetizer because of the small size for the price. The second visit was with work colleagues, and I tried the drunken noodles. I asked them to not make it spicy, and they were perfect. I had it with shrimp, and the sauce was so yummy. My reason for three stars instead of four is the speed of the lunch coming out. They have this awesome lunch express menu which gets your food out right away, but those options only include chicken. I would love to see some vegetarian/vegan express items on the list. Both times I visited lunch took awhile to come out. The service was better and faster the second time, but the waitress could not control the speed of the kitchen. This meant that our food came out in waves instead of together (up to 15 minutes apart). I think this likely just means needing 1-2 more people in the kitchen to work on their speed and timely delivery. The variety of their menu is great, and I look forward to trying more dishes. I've been here 3 times for lunch and every time, it tastes amazing. Pad Thai and Pad See ew are my top two dishes so far. One of the cooks and his son were making my friend & I lunch. They were trying to make it perfect and were competing against each other to make it just right. It was so exciting! Best Asian food we have found since moving to Luling. The Spring Rolls are excellent and I really enjoyed the peanut sauce that accompanied them. I ordered the Pad Thai which was also great but their spice levels are way spicier than most so be careful!! I ordered mine at 1.5 out of 5 and it was hotter than I could handle. My husband ordered a curry dish and loved it, but he ordered a level 3 and said he sweated his way through it when he normally orders the hottest option available. We've tried this place several times, and even when we ask for less spice/heat (they offer zero, don't believe it) each dish comes out too spicy for the average person. Why offer 0-5 heat when you can't do that? the waitress is super nice, but the cook/owner isn't nice. I went to the counter to ask for more tea to wash down the fire food, and she looked at me and said, "yes?" with a glare. I asked for tea and she looked away. not going back. Left lots of food on our plates. Quality and taste is very average. $$. read more
