I decided to give this restaurant a third try because apparently I enjoy giving restaurants multiple opportunities to prove me wrong. I really wanted to see if the famous Hainan chicken special would finally live up to all the hype. My second visit was actually great--the beef pho was excellent. And judging by what everyone else was eating, I wasn't the only one who thought so. At 8 p.m., most of the tables around me were happily slurping away at beef pho. Apparently, the customers already know what's good. This time, I was told they were out of the Hainan chicken. However, they had enough white meat chicken to make a bowl of chicken pho. I had just finished working out and was hungry, so I decided not to start a second workout by driving somewhere else. I accepted the offer. Unfortunately, the chicken pho was still not the star of the show. The first time I had it, the broth was so bland it tasted like someone had introduced hot water to a chicken bone and called it a day. This time was definitely better, but it was still nowhere close to the "most savory broth" being advertised on Instagram. The fish sauce was also way too sweet. No lemon was provided, but fortunately I was at home and had fresh limes growing in my garden. The lime basically came in as the emergency rescue team and made the sauce edible. Now, let's talk about the chicken wings. I've ordered the lemon pepper wings here twice before, and BOTH times they were outstanding--4.5 stars all day long. So naturally, I thought, "Why not try the garlic wings this time?" Well, the garlic wings were a disaster. They were so hard and dry that I genuinely wondered if they had been fried, cooled, and then given a second career as chicken jerky. I could barely eat them. My husband, who apparently has Fred Flintstone teeth, somehow managed to finish the entire plate. To be fair, the restaurant was jam-packed at 8 p.m., so clearly plenty of people love this place--and I can understand why. There are definitely things here that I would order again. This place has really good chicken pho! The soup and broth tasted very fresh and clean! It is def a must get here and what they are known for. They give you ample amount of chicken, broth, and soup. The dipping sauce used for their chicken is also good. My husband got the vermicelli with pork and that was also really good. Their egg rolls are crispy. However, the pork was a little dry and fatty. This place was pretty good, I really liked their pho broth as well as their hainan chicken. It gets really busy during lunch, tells you how popular it is. Hands down, Pho Nic is my favorite spot for hainanese chicken in Irvine. They are always consistently good. I always get the dark meat only ($1.00 extra). The chicken is silky with a trio of sauces. I love the ginger scallion and the sweet soy sauce. I usually don't eat the chicken skin, but again, it's so silky here that I just gobble it up. The pho is pretty good too. And they do not skimp on the protein. I find it to be very reasonably priced. You can make your own bowl with 4 toppings for $14.00. Overall, both are good choices if you're craving a bowl of hot Pho, especially on a cold day. The broth in both bowls was well-seasoned and rich. The meat on the beef rib bone was tender and came off the bone almost on its own while the chicken (even the white meat) was really juicy and tender. The service both times I went was great.
