Wow! We visited Pho King when we were in Rochester and this place is amazing. My mom was craving noodles so this seemed like the perfect spot, and it did not disappoint. First off, it's adorable. Whoever decorated definitely has an eye, it's like eating in a beautiful little indoor garden. To start, we got the egg rolls and I tried the Thai Me Up, which is like an alcohol-infused Thai Iced Tea. Yum! For my entree I got the Bò Lúc Lắc / shaking beef which was really special. The noodles were cooked perfectly, the sauce was rich and garlicky, and the beef was tender and marinated well. I could happily eat two bowlfuls. The service was great, everyone was so nice. The owner was stopping by each table to greet guests, which I thought was very thoughtful, and not something you see everyday. We were in Rochester 2 weekends ago. We ended up in Pittsford for an arts and craft market. It was past lunch time and my hubs searched for restaurants in the area. I already bookmarked Pho King the night before and so I recommended that we come here. So glad we did! It is a cozy yet beautifully designed interior that is trendy and welcoming, but what truly sets this place apart is the phenomenal hospitality. The entire staff was attentive and excellent. Special shout-out goes to the Chef-owner's husband, whose warm and attentive service made our meal unforgettable. The food is absolutely spectacular! Every single dish we ordered (2 visits) were exceptional. Our first visit was for early lunch on a Saturday. We came right when they just opened around 11:30. We just wanted something light to share and "test" if we like it. The perfectly crispy fried pork egg rolls were perfectly complemented by the refreshing pickled cucumbers and nuoc mam dipping sauce. The BBQ Pork Bánh Mì, served alongside perfectly golden house-made fries was phenomenal. Per my hubs, this was the best Bánh Mì he's had, and I agree. We enjoyed our first visit so much and we decided to come back on a rainy Sunday for early dinner. We started with the calamari - lightly-breaded and was also fried to perfection--light, crispy, and delicious served with sweet chili sauce. My hubs ordered ribs - tender, beautifully charred, paired with a papaya salad and traditional sticky rice container. My dish was a standout - the Bò Lúc Lắc (Vietnamese Shaking Beef). The meat was incredibly tender, wok-tossed with onions and peppers. Dessert was unforgettable: we finished our meal with homemade Ube Tiramisu with a side of ube ice cream which was the perfect, mildly sweet end to a magnificent dinner. I've been here twice now and have enjoy my meals both times. The first time I met a friend on a Saturday for late lunch about 3:15. The restaurant is somewhat small, and I was glad when we arrived when we did. A large group of young people came in and took up nearly every open space in the restaurant. When I came again on a Thursday at noon, I was alone and took a seat at the bar. All of the open tables filled up quickly and there was no room left at the bar either. That's truly my ony complaint is that there isn't enough seating. Ok, getting to the food: Banh Xeo (crispy rice pancake) was really good. I enjoyed this simple dish as an appetizer and liked wrapping it up in the lettuce that was served alongside it. It was only a tad bit greasy, but the flavors were very good. Papaya salad was good - a little spicy. I would go milder next time I ordered it. I like that it's served with the sticky rice. When I ordered this, I actually had very little time to eat it before my main came. Ended up taking it and the sticky rice home which didn't really translate well. I would probably not order this as take out based on that. But if you like a good papaya salad, you'll enjoy this one. On my most recent visit I went for a simple chicken pho and loaded it up with chili oil, jalapeno, lime and cilantro. I would have maybe liked a bit of thai basil, but overall the flavors were good. The chicken was good quality white meat which I prefer, and the broth had a nice flavors. This is perfect for a slow, rainy, grey day. The other soup I had was the Bun Bo Hue which has spicy beef in a pork broth. It was really good, and spicy on it's own so I didn't add anything. The red cabbage is what makes it special for me! I would definitely order this again. I've tried both the lychee and pandan spritzers. The pandan has a more earthy flavor which was nice to try, but I don't think it's my favorite. The lychee was a perfect mix of sweet and bubbly. At $5 I probably can't justify ordering it, but it was really good and a refreshing treat. The staff here are very nice and care about your experience. It's nice when the chefs come out and deliver your food and check in on you. I really enjoyed the last couple of visits, and I would recommend it to others. It's probably best that this restaurant is so far from my house, because I could easily become a regular. Decided to try a new spot. Pho always hits the spot on a cold day. And this was a great choice. It is small inside but we only had a short wait. Staff was friendly and attentive. The shrimp spring rolls were delicious. They do have rice inside which was a surprise but I didn't mind. I really like the peanut sauce on the side! Not pictured is the Pho Ban Mi which my spouse ordered. She enjoyed having Pho to dip the sandwich in. The crispy rice pancake was a nice surprise. My cocktail was smooth and refreshing. Staff is very friendly. Portions are large & food came out hot. My daughter was not a fan of the beef kids pho but did enjoy the sticky rice. ***4.5 Stars*** Great spot if you know what to order. Admittedly, the pho is just okay....so the restaurant's name is a bit of a misnomer. Granted I ordered the pho to-go, so that may have affected my experience, but I thought the broth could have been richer (more oily if that makes more sense) and more aromatic. After this, I was a little bit disappointed with the restaurant. However that changed when my friend redirected me to order particular items on the menu. More specifically, the Laos dishes. The Beef Laap is probably my favorite dish, a spicy steak salad that's served with sticky rice. It's a flavor bomb of savory, sour and umami. It also has good textural contrast with crispy lettuce and sticky rice. I will order this every time now. Another standout dish is the Chicken Red Curry, which I think is a version of the Laos dish Kapoon. It's rich and coconutty with a tad bit of sweetness. Not very spicy. It's a hearty dish, especially if you ask for extra broth. The satay and fresh spring rolls are also really good and well-portioned. Good riddance to the old Mexican restaurant that it replaced. The owners have really done a good job with renovations and the restaurant feels modern, chic and cozy. Overall, I am a fan (even though I don't order the pho). read more

Stopped by with my wife and daughter this past weekend. They have done a great job with the interior. Great decor but not a lot of seating. The place was hopping and we decided to sit at the bar. It was a great overall experience. Food was good. We had spring rolls and calamari for appetizers. My wife commented on how fresh and crispy the calamari tasted. Spring rolls were good also. Entrees we had chicken bahn mi, chicken udon, and I had the BÚN BÒ HUÊ. All were enjoyed. The BÚN BÒ HUÊ was spicy and made me cough a few times, but surprisingly wasn't a burn your taste buds out hot. Very enjoyable for someone who thinks they like spicy but can't handle extreme heat. Was heading to Buffalo for work and craving Vietnamese grub...usually when I'm working in the Rochester area I have to venture to the western side of the city for pho (I usually stay in Pittsford). Fortunately this place in Bushnell's Basin opened up...and only 5 miles off the Thruway. It's a snug spot...mostly gringo staff....but very flavorful fresh summer rolls and pho ga. I had the chicken pho in a beef broth...was quite good. You can see the kitchen from the bar...and yes they do boil the bones. Back in Connecticut where I grew up, there are so many of these places... not in Rochester (I think its a very very conservative dining town out here..). A bit pricier than most pho joints I go to...but the price variation is ok since the quality is excellent. Great place for future reference...and for you mallrats, it's close to the Victor mall (or whatever they call it out in the 585). read more

Went there for the first time last night, as my kids saw the name and wanted to keep repeating it as they knew what it sounds like. Beautiful decor, fresh spring rolls were amazing, I don't know how they seasoned the chicken satay, but I could have eaten about 50 of them. Papaya salad was very good, but got the mild, and even them it's quite spicy, but again, very good. My son had the Pho, and said it was very good,..........but it was the dessert, a blueberry thing that was one of the best tasting desserts I have ever had - no lie! Now I have them a three because the last time I ate there, I wanted to pay using Apple Pay. Well I guess they prefer not to accept it despite their capability, due to increased fees on their end per transaction. Was really excited for this place to open, and if I went in with the mindset that it's a trendy, new spot rather than a pho restaurant, I would have been less disappointed. I wasn't trying to spend 50-60 bucks on a drink, appetizer, and pho, so I just tried the 'Traditional Pho' and iced Vietnamese coffee. Their broth was better than expected (though less flavorful than what I'm used to, but their chili sauce/oil was perfect). The portion was smaller than other pho spots in the area, and I was kind of surprised when someone tried to clear my bowl before I had a chance to finish. Coffee was good, but I prefer hot (which they didn't have on the menu). I like that they had some non-alcoholic beverages, so my kids can feel like they're having a grown up meal with mommy. Service was good, and the staff seemed to remember the people who had already dined there. Ambiance was nice. It's way closer than a lot of the other pho restaurants, which is the main draw for me. Otherwise, Saigon Pho is my fav. The price for the portion is not there for me to be a lunch regular. If they offered hot Vietnamese coffee, I'd probably stop by more. read more

When I first walked into Pho King, I could smell the goodness and the food and service did not disappoint. I don't like to review based only on take out, but this was exceptional so here it goes. I placed my take out order and then had a Pandan gimlet. The owners husband made the cocktail and it was great. A very interesting and delicate flavor which was delicious. The bar is full,service and looks to have some nice bourbons and tequilas. The presentation of the dishes looked amazing, so I am anxious to go back and dine in very soon. The traditional Pho was amazing. The broth has a very delicate flavor and was enhanced with the condiments. Shrimp rolls has a whole shrimp and very tasty. The bahn mi has fresh crispy veggies and just the right amount of mayo. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the dished and the preparation. Food was maybe the most delicious meal out that we have had in a very long time. Fresh and tasty with lovely presentation. Fresh spring rolls came with enough for 4 and the dipping sauces were yum. The Banh Xeo was one of the tastiest appetizers of recent times. Then we shared the chicken udon, broth and noodles perfectly cooked. We added the Bo Luc Lac. That was enough for 3 with some left over. The cocktails were fun, the Pandan Gimlet and the strawberry lemongrass caught our eye and we were not disappointed. I'm reluctant to post this 'cos I want to go back and get a table. But more importantly we hope the place gets lots custom and stay open for us all to enjoy. The front of house was quick and helped with explanations where we needed them. All very friendly and relatable. I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area and have often frequented a different, unrelated "Pho King" in Oakland. I have to say that this once was right on par, or even better! We had lunch at Pho King today and we were not disappointed. I had the traditional Pho and my wife had the Chicken Udon Pho. We also split the traditional Bhan Mi. Everything was excellently presented and seasoned. They provided the typical garnish tray and had 3 sauces available on the table. All in all it was a great experience and excellent food! We were seeing Hamilton in Rochester for my daughter's birthday. We searched for a Vietnamese and found a dozen. We picked Pho King and were not disappointed. I wanted Pho. My daughter wanted Bun Bo Hue, which is another authentic Vietnamese soup dish that isn't always served in Pho restaraunts but they had it and she loved it. FINALLY! A pho restaurant on the east side of Rochester with the best name in town. This is the nicest, newly renovated, cleanest restaurant in Rochester with exceptional service. Any pho lover will tell you the most important ingredient is the broth. Not only are the owners amazing human beings, the broth itself is homemade and has been passed down generations in her family. I could also tell the quality of the meat is superior to other restaurants. I got a side of spicy chili sauce to add it to my broth and this is the only one I have had that is actually spicy and has a great kick! All in all, this is my new favorite pho spot in Rochester and given it is right around the corner from my house, I look forward to being a regular! read more
