The ONLY Vietnamese place you should go to in Rochester. Super nice owner and very quick service. The other viet places in town don't even have bun bo hue on their menu. Saigon is an easy Rochester 5 star (but maybe not a NYC or NJ 5 star but that's okay). Banh mi is missing the pate/mayo so maybe skip this but the rest is amazing. Probably the only reason I've been able to live in Rochester for the past 7 years. I'll be back for more bun bo hue and ice coffee. read more

I'm not sure what to think about this place. I want to love it bc I love small mom and pop shops. The menu was small so I had really high expectations for the pho. I ordered a pho bo vien (meatball) . I guess it only comes one way bc it had all of the other meats in there too and only 1 meat ball. The portion was also smaller. I think I got food poisoning from here. I felt sick afterwards. It was not a fun night. What also threw me off was the placement of the restroom in the kitchen. Kind of a royal PITA if your hotel is in Pittsford, but for whatever reason there are not that many Pho joints in the Rahchacha. Excellent strip mall pho joint. If you are heading to Lake Ontario (west side) or Buffalo this is a good strategic pho spot before you head out. read more

I heard about this place through a friend and so glad I did. It is located next to another Vietnamese restaurant that I have not tried yet. Location is very small with few seats (actually, I'm not even sure there is a bathroom even). Menu is very limited but they cover all of the basics (one pho dish, bun bo hue, banh mi, com tam, hu tieu, etc). You have to purchase your drink separately and this is no frills. Prices are reasonable for inflation now (around $12/entree). Tried the pho and bun bo hue. Both were delicious! Will definitely come back. read more

I had been craving Bún bò Huế and this was one of the few restaurants in Rochester that had it. They are taking take out only. I arrived and placed my order in person and waited less than 15 minutes for everything to be ready. I got the Bún bò Huế (spicy beef soup) and bánh bột chiên (fried rice flour cakes). The soup was so good. Very spicy (in the best way) with tender beef. I loved the broth. The bánh bột chiên was crispy and came with a vinegary dipping sauce that was a good compliment in flavor. It also has scrambled egg mixed in, which is always good. This was a solid meal and I would definitely recommend giving them a try when you want Vietnamese food! read more

It's a big sandwich, so you won't (sigh) when it's gone unless you have a mega huge appetite. Really though, I have nothing really bad to say about Saigon. Their sandwich is huge and pretty cheap and is not bad. I think the one next door is a little better and neither one would go on my favorite Vietnamese sandwich list or anything. The service here was fine. You should probably try both sandwiches here and next door since they're both so cheap - so that you can decide for yourself which one you like more. I was craving for pho for lunch, and was super excited to try their pho. I got 2 beef pho, ban mi, and spring rolls for a takeout. I set the bag on the passenger seat floor. Unfortunately, they put 2 large cuts on the soup container lid (I assume to relieve pressure when it's too hot) which really defeats the purpose of having a lid and by the time I got home, entire soup was drained out as the soup containers shifted and fell over inside the plastic bag. The lids were on tight, just leaked through the cuts. Now my car carpet is soaked with 2 full of pho soup (spilled out of the plastic bag!!) and I don't get to taste it. What a bummer. The ban mi was really good, spring rolls were okay. The restaurant said I could come back to get soup but I live 30+ min away. And they close at 3 on Fridays (not sure what their real hours are. Can't find anywhere). She said she would give a credit for next time order so im leaving 3 stars... too bad they don't tape the "vent holes" for takeout orders like other takeout places. So be aware when you do takeouts, ask to seal the vent holes (not sure if they would?), bring a scotch tape, or set it in place securely to avoid the bag from tipping over or moving around. read more

I've been craving for some good Vietnamese food in Rochester. It was hard to find a decent spot. But, saw tons of positive reviews on this place and decided to give it a try with my girlfriend. It's a small little restaurant with plastic tables. I didn't expect much from them, but I was blown away from their food. We ordered their bunh mi, spring rolls, Pho, vermicelli with grilled pork and ice coffee. I wasn't too impressed with their spring roll, but they give you a lot at a massive size. Their bunh mi was really good and the bun was perfect. Pho broth was rich in flavor and spoke to my soul. They did give a good amount of meat. Their vermicelli with grilled pork was amazing and the meat wasn't overcooked or dry. Great flavor behind it and their fish sauce was a nice touch to the dish. I would pass on the spring rolls, but would go back and try out their bun bo hue. I would highly recommend it and would recommend trying out their Pho. It did take them a long time to give us the check, but beside the mediocre service, the food was great! read more

Absolutely LOVED this mom and pop Vietnamese restaurant. Coming from California, I never thought I would find good Vietnamese food in Upstate NY, but Saigon Pho exceeded my expectations in both taste and service. We started off with fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce and crispy egg rolls. They both tasted very fresh and made to order. The beef pho was very aromatic and the broth had a lot of flavor and depth. It tasted like it was made with love, just like how pho SHOULD be made. The bun bo Hue (BBH) was also delicious and rich in flavor and spice. The BBH did not have congealed blood and tendon. I take it they simply can not get these ingredients in this region of NY where Asian grocery stores are small and sparse. Regardless, these two bowls definitely hit the spot on a cold NY night. The service was also great! This is oh so rare in Asian restaurants so I appreciated the friendly smiles a lot! It's a small restaurant with few tables. There's no fluff here. Just really good food. We came in to order some food to-go for the long drive ahead of us, and the Vietnamese lady at the front taking orders (presumably the owner of the restaurant) was openly nagging and yelling at her employees. My mother came up to her to order her food and the woman just SNAPPED at her. The woman snapped, basically saying, "You're ordering food to-go??? Do you see I have other customers here???". Beyond rude. Have a sense of respect for other people. Upon trying the food, it is pretty good here! The com chien is a bit oily appeared to be made with love. It was well-seasoned and had very good flavor. The com tam (pork) was really nice too, the pork being juicy. The yolk of the egg was runny too, not overcooked. It's tragic that the owner of the restaurant has no sense of basic manners and won't treat their employees with respect. She should at least treat the chefs with respect--they really know how to cook! read more

I don't like doing reviews like this but I have to be honest! This is my second time coming to this restaurant! My first time the food was delicious but the owner was rude to me and her employees! Today on June 13th 12:39 my experience has been horrible! While eating my pho I found 3 pieces of white hair in my food! I told the owner about the first one and she took the hair threw it on the ground and said "You have good eyes" my co-workers and boss saw the entire thing! I will not step foot in this place again until the owner changes her attitude and service! She asked me if I wanted another one and I told her no! She said "are you full"! she didn't ask until after my boss asked if I could get another one! Saigon Pho is one of my go-to Vietnamese restaurants in Rochester. They have a small selection of dishes but the ones I have tried are all pretty decent. Parking lot has plenty of spots. It's a small restaurant with limited seating but I never had to wait. It's pretty hole-in-the-wall and family run, so I have come to recognize the two ladies who run the place. They're always friendly. Their bun bo hue is pretty good but unfortunately does not have all the ingredients. It's still the best in town. Thei pho is also pretty good. We love Vietnamese food and this little "hole in the wall" was recommended to us to try. It is now my favorite Vietnamese food in Rochester! Located at the end of a plaza on Lyell Ave, the place is small and menu is limited, but the food more authentic than any other Vietnamese place I've been to in this city. If you go when it's busy you might need to share a long table with other diners, which we did, but still felt comfortable - even thought we shared the same table there was enough separation that we didn't feel "together." We both had the beef Pho and it was great - flavorful broth and nice portion. We also got a Banh Mi to taste and share. Very reasonable prices. So....nothing fancy here folks: small place, limited seating, 2 sided menu, friendly staff, authentic food, reasonable prices. This has been my go-to for pho for a long time. Rochester does have a few great pho places, but I always gravitate towards this one time after time. In my opinion, a great bowl of pho starts with the broth. I'm not against people spicing up their pho broth, but before doing so, give it a quick taste first. Then decide whether you should add in other spices. I tend to keep everything as is. The next thing I judge are the noodles. Only a few restaurants including this one use the fresh pho noodles that are typically sold refrigerated vs. the super dry ones. Yes, there really is a difference. The fresh noodles have a bit more chew to them and overall taste better. The dry noodles are very plain, break easily and have no taste. The third thing are the toppings. Specially the meats. You won't find brisket, cartilage, or tendon here. You'll find your standard thinly sliced beef and cut-into-quarters meatballs. Their other dishes such as the Banh Xeo, and Banh Bot Chien are fantastic as well. If there's one thing I hope they put on the menu in the future is "muc chien" or fried squid. They did recently renovate the interior, adding on new lights, ripping out the old flooring and really changing what was once an outdated interior into a much more welcoming one. This tiny restaurant ran by a friendly woman/staff does offer Rochester a great authentic bowl of pho. I love the fact you can see the kitchen from the dining room and see exactly what's going on behind the scenes. read more

This small, divey joint is hidden in a plaza which I heard has the best fresh spring rolls so of course, we had to stop in to check it out. I'm glad we did! I would've never noticed this restaurant if I didn't hear about it through the grapevine. It's not in an ideal location on Lyell Ave. and the store front is tiny on the very end of the plaza, however, based on my first experience I want to go back and try more. The fresh spring rolls can be vegetarian, but we ordered shrimp and pork. It's the first place that I've been to that makes this combo. There are four per order and they're big and hearty portions, which is a plus because that (and the dipping sauce that gives it the flavor) differentiates theirs from the competition's. Most places that I've been to give you two per order and are skimpy. Their brown dipping sauce has the hoisen-mixed savory flavor with a hint of sweetness. Hold the crushed peanuts sprinkled on top if you're allergic. The spring rolls tasted great with the side of hot chili sauce given with the takeout. We also ordered Vietnamese coffee and a special pre-made dish that varies each weekend and is sold at the counter. The helpful and friendly waitress said that they make small dishes for sale such as pork buns and some sweets on the weekends. This Saturday they had sticky rice topped with Chinese sausage, scrambled eggs, and pork slices. The sticky rice was extra soft. For those who don't know, it's a different type of rice that is soaked and then steamed in a bamboo steamer. Typical of some Southeast Asian countries and usually eaten by hand, in similar fashion to the Ethiopian style with injera bread. You can request medium or strong Vietnamese coffee, which is iced coffee sweetened with condensed milk. Me being a black coffee drinker, it was sweet but since the coffee was strong (per my request), I didn't mind the extra sweetness to slow down the hairs sprouting from my chest. Overall, I am impressed by the unexpected and pleasant experience and I want to go back for the real test and try their pho! read more

So excited Rochester is finally breaking into the pho scene! Although they occupy a small restaurant front, Saignon Pho offers giant bowls of steaming hot pho. Call me wrong, but I'm pretty sure there was nutmeg sprinkled on the top of my beef pho when I got it, which really added to and enhanced the flavor.
