    Large pho tai
    David L.

When I think of pho places I think of great value, huge portions, and sometimes takeout bc I can't finish all the pho. This is why I usually prefer pho places over Thai. This is NOT one of those places. I used to come here starting back in 2012. Or even before. I recall this place being so good that I want to go to pho king to get 'phoed out'. I haven't been here in a while bc I've been to that other sit down pho place too much. So when I came here recently. Man, I was quite surprised!! The portions were quite smaller than I had expected. And there were not enough 'tai' to satisfy two young growing boys! Normally a pho tai should have lots of meat if tai is the only option. Normally I have to take out extra tai from my older son's bowl bc he never finishes his tai. But not this bowl. And don't even get me started on the extra portion of noodles that I had ordered... Service is decent. Ambiance is ok bc they have lots of indoor and outdoor seating. And it's close to campus. To sum it up, don't come here for pho. It will not pho you up. You can come bc of location (so close) to campus. I might come back just to check out their rice plates; maybe those are still good? But I'll never come back for pho. This is definitely a 3 star restaurant or even lower. It used to be good. My son used to come here and sit on the table in his infant car seat. We even came here with their auntie when they were able to sit up by themselves. What happened to this place? They should not call themselves pho king. It's no longer funny anymore. Barely average C--

TL;DR Spacious and quiet spot near UC Davis, but the pho was underwhelming with bland broth and minimal meat. Service was fine, but there are better Vietnamese options in town. --- I came here because it's close to the UC Davis campus. I've passed by many times and it never seemed too busy. When I walked in, the restaurant was nearly empty and seating was easy to find. It seems like a decent spot for larger groups. I ordered the pho, which I consider a litmus test for any Vietnamese restaurant. Unfortunately, it was a letdown. The broth was bland and lacked the depth of flavor I expect. The portion of meat was also small, which made the dish feel incomplete. I usually enjoy Vietnamese food, but this bowl didn't live up to expectations. The service was fine and the space was clean, but the food just wasn't memorable. If you're looking for good pho in Davis, there are better options elsewhere.

    Cross section pork banh mi

Ordered lunch from this place for a large graduate group event. They offer several dietary options including vegan and vegetarian options for their banh mi as well as the standard chicken and grilled pork. Every worker I encountered from asking questions over the phone to the worker who helped me place an order via email and the worker who delivered the sandwiches was very helpful. The affordability of this place is probably the best I have seen in Davis with each banh mi at ~$8. Portions are generous although I did find the grilled pork too star anise heavy and there was not enough caramelization on the meat. There was also a lot of mayonnaise in the sandwiches, but I think that is what most people preferred. Overall, the banh mi were a hit and I would not hesitate to order from here again.

I was in the mood for pad thai and the pad thai here really saved my craving! I'd prefer more spice in the sauce but either way, I enjoyed the dish and had a great time here. I'm generally not big on pho but I would say the pad thai is my favorite here at Pho king 4 and I'll definitely get it again

Update: this business is trying to rip people off by charging them for Togo boxes. I previous gave this place 5 stars, but honestly after this experience I will no longer return. I got a chicken pho and it barely had chicken. All the chicken bits were so tiny and it didn't have much at all. Then after we went to pay the guy added a charge for a Togo boxes because my girlfriend didn't finish her food. Didn't even disclose it and had the audacity to make up some story and then post some fake news by the register. I couldn't believe this.

This place is so amazing! I come here every weekend to order the Steak Pho and the prices are absolutely unbelievable! For only 15$ you get a huge portion of such great tasting Pho. The staff are also extremely friendly and very welcoming. They always accommodate you and assist with refills and making your experience very comfortable. I don't understand the negative reviews, because this place has never felt dirty or badly staffed. Everyone is very knowledgeable and clean. The restroom is also nicely kept as well. The food is cooked very well, and I've order several time, both takeout and dine-in. Additionally we are both Hispanics, and have NEVER felt disrespected at all! Actually the opposite and extremely welcomed! Overall, my experience is extremely well and the food is exceptionally amazing. If you know your Pho and are in Davis, stop by and give it a try. Me and my partner always make it a part of our weekend to stop by at least once!

The service need to improve because when u walk in the restaurant NO BODY is there to assist you and complete like a dead place. The food is okay. I WILL NOT RECOMMEND PEOPLE TO HERE.

I love pho so much! Whenever I visit a new spot I like to get their combination pho, spring rolls and Thai tea and during my visit to Pho King 4 I was very predictable. The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating options and the menu has so many great options on it including vegan and vegetarian options. We ended up eating at the restaurant and I loved getting to doctor up my pho there with hoisin, sambal and all the beansprouts and jalapeños. I love the flavor combination of savory, sweet and spicy that you get with pho. Everything was delicious and even though I ordered a small pho I still ended up taking leftovers home. It's never as good reheated so if you can eat most of it at the restaurant that's ideal. If you do take home leftovers just know your noodles are going to soak up that delicious broth, still delicious but less soupy. I'm already craving pho again though!!

    Stanley L.

What can I say, I'm just a man of habitual instinct. First thing I do in Davis when I visit is to get a bowl of pho. I don't care if there's a new pho spot because this is my favorite. I mean, after all, they basically fed me during my undergraduate hungover and sober days! Bless up, fam... bless UP!

Please do not come here. Go to pho tasty or anywhere else. My friend and I came here because pho tasty was closed and thought we would give this place a chance and we were wrong. We ordered 2 pho and spring rolls. M One of the pho has a bug in it. We let the waiter know and he asked if we wanted a new one. I asked if it was possible to not be charged for the pho since it has a bug in it and the waiter said they can't do that. There was no apology or acknowledgment that there were bugs in the soup! The waiter was not flexible at all and all we could do is get a new soup. I'm sorry if the food has bugs in it, hard to think we would want anything else from the place. They remade the soup but by this point we were full and lost our appetite. We ordered spring rolls and they were very cold. I know the lettuce needs to be refrigerated and the noodles go into cold water but these were so cold as if they were straight out the fridge. I will never be coming back and if someone asks where to get pho in town. This place will not be it.

We were both pretty hungry afterwards and weren't sure what places were open, or what we wanted to eat. We decided to drive around downtown Davis just to get a sense of what was open, and saw that Tasty Kitchen was bustling. We had never eaten there before, but as it was pretty much our only option besides fast food (which I did not want), we decided to try them out and have a good Thanksgiving dinner. I took a quick browse at their Yelp reviews before heading in, and the food looked pretty good, so I figured why not. Since we had come pretty much on a whim (I usually heavily research restaurants before trying new places), we weren't quite sure what to order, but I knew I wanted some carbs. We wanted to share a fried rice, so we chose the dried scallop and egg white fried rice. My husband was eyeing the beef stew lo mein, and I was eager to try the beef chow fun with black bean sauce. We were seated quickly and given hot tea to enjoy. It had been a cold day, so the tea was very welcome. We placed our order and then sat back to people watch while we waited. There were a few large groups dining in, but while watching the staff, they all worked efficiently, and food was constantly coming out of the kitchen. Delivery drivers and those who called in for takeout were also coming and going. We waited a while for our food, but it was also because everyone seemed to have ordered at the same time for the dinner rush (and we had come around 17:45 too). I guess everyone was feeling like an early Thanksgiving dinner. We were honestly amazed by the huge portion sizes when our dishes arrived to our table. Everything was reasonably priced as well, and we knew we would have plenty of leftovers. The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was delightfully saucy, and the noodles still had a nice wok hay. The beef was extremely velvety and tender. My husband enjoyed his beef stew lo mein. The egg noodles were perfectly bouncy, and the braised beef was tender. The dried scallop egg white fried rice was pretty good as well. I had hoped for a bit more wok hay and scallop flavor, but it was a little under seasoned. I would say it was a nice palette cleanser if you will, and at least the rice was nice and fluffy. I would have to say that the food here is comforting and hearty, but it didn't have as much depth of flavor as I would have liked. However, you really get your money's worth when you come here. It was $49 for everything before tip, and we had so many leftovers to take home. Our waiter even took our plates and packaged them to go for us, so that was a nice touch. I'm used to packaging my own leftovers these days. There's something for everyone at this restaurant, and I would like to be back to try some of their other dishes. Another table across from us ordered the Mongolian beef, which came on a sizzling platter, and that smelled so good. That will definitely be a contender next time we visit. I'm definitely thankful that Tasty Kitchen was open on Thanksgiving, and will keep this restaurant in our rotation for a holiday meal.

My husband and I came here after lunch and ordered two sauce, fried rice, a spicy, braised beef dish, and gai lan (Chinese broccoli). I was so excited to eat the fried rice and it tasted exactly like what I imagined it to taste like. I don't typically like really starchy, thick sauces, but that was exactly what I was looking for. I don't know, it's not like it's anything super special or a crazy amazing delicious dish, it's just a nostalgic taste that I really missed and used to only be able to get at the old tea house in Davis over a decade ago. The spicy braised beef, unfortunately was the kind of spicy. I didn't want it to be, so if you don't like tongue, numbing spicy, this is not the dish for you. That being said, the rest of the dish was good, I found the meat to be quite tender And well seasoned, when I could taste beyond numbness, lol. Vegetables are vegetables, really not more to say about that. I'll definitely come back for the fried rice and to try other clay pot dishes, which they have a lot of variety of. Also, it seems like a lot of people really enjoy their duck, so I'll be make sure to order that next time. In terms of ambience or service, it is a Chinese restaurant. You get what you get, and that is a person who brings your food out. Just kidding (kind of) I'm not expecting five star restaurant levels of service at this price point. Plates and cups were clean, the server came when I raised my hand, idk I don't really need more than that! Also, as a Vietnamese person who always has cash on her, I love when I get a discount (5%) for using cash.

Wow! Ascended to my #1 restaurant spot in Davis. Definitely more of an infrequent meal since I…read morewould consider it more on the expensive side. Average dishes are ~20 dollars. Great spicy food and friendly staff. Food (10/10) - The food here is AMAZING! Perfect balance of spice to flavor and every single bite is electric. The sichuan numbing pepper in the Chongqing soup was DELICIOUS. Mix it with some of the white rice and you have a dish all by iteself. The chicken itself had a nice chew and was very fragrant. Loved the texture and flaovr of the vermicelli; nice bounce to the noodles while soaking in all the spicy soup. My one complaint would be that they have soft bones (sign of long boiling time) so be careful of that! Also got the spicy stir-fried pork kidney... don't diss it 'til you try it. Super good, with that nice bit of chew. Take a bite of pepper, kidney, and white rice and BOOM! Perfect bite. **Recommendation: Rice is a key component for the dishes here. Without rice, everything will be too spicy, too savory, and overall too overwhelming. The rice is the thing that helps tie everything together (as it frequently is) Service (8/10) - Good service; nothing notable. Nice people and I think most of them speak Mandarin. Service and seating was also fast. Order of things to come out of the kitchen was a bit strange: soup for the chicken, rice, stir-fry, chicken. Honestly, not that big of a problem but just decided to comment. Price (8/10) - The price here is a bit on the pricier side; $54 for 2 but there were some leftovers (had to make my own rice though). Some of the dishes are more worth than others. The Chonqing chicken was $25 but you got a large bowl of chicken with soup and vermicelli. On the other hand, the stir-fry for $20 was notably padded with vegetables and I would say a majority of the dish was not the kidney. At the very least, the taste of the food compensates. However, this place is likely not a college go-to. Overall, great restaurant that I will be coming back to again (maybe with my parents LOL) or at the very least, would come with a large group as it is more fitting for family style. Highly recommend!

My kid mentioned they usually are very pack and people would dine outdoor, but I guess we arrived early so there wasn't any wait time. Ordered few items, food came out very fast and the tastes are not bad at all. Beef Fried Rice Noodles: How do you differentiate if this dish is good or not, it is about how much excessive oil that's left on the plate. The stir fried was good, not too greasy, and they marinate the meat well. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, this place's meat was good. Only they could stir fried with even higher eat to create more "wok air" Sticky Rice Stick with Brown Sugar: First time trying this dish, so not sure what to expect. But it does seem to be a dessert to me, my comment would be higher if the rice stick is more chewy. Hot & Sour Shredded Potato: This is common dish from northern part of China. The way they prepared was awesome. The potato was not starchy and the seasoning is just right. A bit greasy but this is actually my favorite dish! Shrimp and Pork with Chives Dumplings: Meat is fresh and dumpling wrap is great too. Each dumpling size is not too big and wasn't torn. Taste is okay but maybe try another filling if I visit again. I would come again to try out other things on the menu if I'm visiting my kid again.

In front of my table was where the staff was making dumplings (they were behind glass). After looking at the menu, I opted to get some traditional soup dumplings, bbq pork fried rice, and pineapple bao buns for dessert. My server was Bing and she was nice and efficient. She came back to check on me a few times throughout my dining experience. My fried rice came out first. It was a LARGE serving of fried rice, it of course had eggs, carrots, peas, and BBQ pork. It was flavorful. Next came out the soup dumplings. They were brought out in a steamer basket with a top to keep them warm. These were amazing. The light and delicate dough, mixed with the savory pork filling, and the salty broth was perfection. Next came out my pineapple bao buns. To be honest, I wasn't sure how I was going to like them. To my surprise these may have been the star of the show. The dough was light and sweet, the top was carmelized and sweet, and the custard inside reminded me of a Dole Whip from disney (exept it wasn't cold, it was warm). These were pretty large and I'm semi embarrassed to admint I had 2 3/4 bao buns myself. Go here. It's delicious.

Ambiance and service are good, but not great. The dishes we tried were: - I12 Dan dan noodles: 5/5 super tasty and flavorful, but quite spicy - G2 Sautéed green beans: 5/5 simple but soooooo good! - D1 Griddle cooked fragnant cabbages and pork: 5/5 again pretty simple, but very tasty and well cooked! - E7 Hunan style sauteed beef: 5/5 excellent, so tender and juicy and well seasoned. - I3 Farmhouse stir fried pork with rice noodles: 4/5 very tasty, but the texture of the rice noodles were a bit too slippery for my taste. - E16 Ma Po Tofu: 4/5 the sauce was amazing, but the tofu texture was a bit too soft and strange for me. - G4 Shaoshan stir fried shredded potatoes: 3/5 I didn't have a problem with this, but didn't particularly enjoy them either. Not something to go for again. The potatoes are kind of half way cooked. - C1 Laotan boiled fish with pickled cabbage: 1/5 the fish itself was tasty, but the soup itself was super salty like drinking ocean water! I didn't like the taste of pickles in the soup either.

New favorite restaurant, if ur Chinese this has all of the childhood restaurant favorites. All…read moregreat prices for the portions. We had the seafood tofu hotpot, shrimp wonton, garlic green bean, mongolian beef, half hainan chicken, and ny steak spaghetti to-go. Was a little busy at 7 on a holiday so we waited like ten minutes to get our order in, the guy memorized our order right as I said it lol. He confirmed and we got our soup in ten mins, ten mins for green beans and mongolian beef, another ten minutes for our chicken, then like seven for hotpot. Most disappointing was chicken, it's not hainan at all and just standard hong kong white chicken. Taste is fine and fresh but was sad. Best was the seafood hotpot AND the wonton soup. Both had great flavor and saltiness and was just sooo good. Wontons were very tasty and had a lot of meat, definitely both pork and shrimp, and soup even had little shrimp in it ifkyk. The seafood hotpot had great variety and flavor, my parents were pleased with the fish bits in it, the tofu was yummy bc it's fried tofu, the crab texture was not great maybe overcooked and I didn't like the soft cucumber but otherwise the broccoli scallop shrimp tofu fish bok choy was all great. Green beans and mongolian beef SERIOUSLY needed some wok flavor and wish the beef had black pepper because the seasoning was a bit lacking (wok flavor would be great here) and overall the vegetables were a little undercooked. They were addictive though I definitely kept going back for more. Hot tea is jasmine tea. Service was a bit lackluster but totally understandable and even though I was in a rush we were in and out by an hour and like ten minutes which worked. Ambiance wise, I didn't like how the lights are half brighter and whiter than the sun and half nicely softly lit. Tables are nice wood and a bit sticky but okay. There's random Chinese TV on the walls, very traditional lol and I think no music. Overall very pleased! Will definitely come back as much as possible to support, and highly highly recommend. I went harsh on Tim's because I was expecting perfect dishes, and even though some stuff didn't hit, everything was way beyond average.
