So my orginal intent was to go eat at Toshi but they were busy so i decided to give pho hoai a try. This place was just average. i like how the broth was acually flavorful. Though it's not the flavor that i want but i will give them points for not going bland. The only thing i really didn't like was the aftertaste. I took the food to go so it didn't seem much and they went skimpy on the herbage. so those are bummers but that could be because i took it togo. overall it's an ok place. definately acceptable but not a thriller. read more

I wish we could do half stars because then I'd go with 3.5, but since I'm limited and can't think anything special to bump it up a notch, 3 stars it is. I had the Pho, and he had something else including beef satay and vermicelli (or something along those lines - don't recall the name or exact description). Both were definitely good, but neither were super special. Same for the service. I think I could be spoiled because the Pho Nam place that we love (yes, I Yelped it) just has super cheap drinks (and a wide variety) and is more generous with the ingredients, while Pho Hoai includes meat in a dish that has it but not to such a degree that it's worth comment. LEMONGRASSSSSS!!! Came here on a Sunday "morning" (12:30pm), since Toshi Sushi was closed next door. I love that they dont skimp on this nor water down the flavors of their dishes. Shared a Mi Quang with my guide here and ordered the Bo Nuong Hue. The mi quang had wide egg noodles and had a rich (tomato-y?) soupy base, and actually was very satisfying on a cold day, ESPECIALLY if you drown it in the crack/ginger-chili sauce on the table. There was also shrimp, along with sliced beef, rice crackers, and peanuts. This isn't a really spicy dish, fyi. I haven't had this dish in years, and it definitely left me wanting more. If you're bored of Pho, Bun or rice plates, try this one out! The Bo Nuong Hue appears on its surface to be the standard southern vietnamese bun dish, but the main variation is in the beef seasoning and the use of lemongrass, (Its a very small difference, but the dish does taste different from what you would see elsewhere) Overall the beef slices were a bit dry (I think these were just the tai steak slices seasoned and then seared/grilled). I'm glad i ordered the dish because I rarely get a taste of sufficient lemongrass in the Portland area, but the rest didn't blow me away. Got a plate of Goi Cuon which were quite larger than the usual spots' versions, but the shrimp in these I will definitely be back for the mi quang, and its actually very nice that they don't thin themselves out on their menu by also making thai food. I can say that this place has one of the more eclectic menus of Pho places in the Hillsboro/Beaverton area. This is definitely a restaurant that doesn't follow the typical lines of the other Pho/viet joints in the area. read more

I frequent many pho restaurants but this one is the closest to my house so on lazy days such as today it is the best option with minimal traveling. I went to order to-go. It took a bit of time for it to get done but thats probably because I walked in about 1 minute after they opened and ordered quite a few things for my roommates and myself. The staff was very friendly and was able to answer the few questions I had. They recommended a dish that turned out to be the best thing we have eaten in quite a while. While the restaurant looks small and run down....the food is well above average and the price is great for what you get. I will definitely return often. read more

Absolutely the best Pho around! They put in a subtle spice blend that adds such a wonderful flavor to the broth. This is what I have when ever I am feeling sick and it always makes me feel better! Also, the salad rolls are twice the size of other restaurants and delicious! Not to mention the awesome and very friendly service! I've been to a couple places in the area but I just love how the broth taste here. Also the price is a lot more affordable than other places in the area. I love the spicy oil they have on the table they add some more herbs to it to make it have this very unique flavor. The food comes out very quickly so that's a plus if you're trying to find a place to eat with a short amount of time. We are now moving back to the gorge so I will miss this place a lot hope you get a chance to try it out! read more

I am no pho expert so take my recommendation lightly but for 5.95 a bowl it's hard to beat on a cold winter's day! This family run restaurant has excellent service and is very friendly. The P2 - brisket and flank steak, is my fav especially with a squeeze of lime, dash of Sriracha and some Thai basil. However the broth is a little on the sweet side. I would recommend adding some of the fresh jalapenos as well but watch out ... they may still have their seeds. read more

I had yet another Pho craving today on the way to work, and just happened to be passing by the strip mall with all those restaurants I've been meaning to check out. I walked in, and it was very simply decorated, clean, no strange smells. I was greeted with a menu and a smile. I ordered my usual Pho Ga, and it came out very quickly, good and hot. First time I ordered Chicken Pho. It was delicious. They gave me three different sauces to go with it and I through them all in the soup. Warm, spicy and soothing is how I would describe it. It was enough to feed two people. Also came recommended was their Avocado Smoothie. Never had it and frankly it sounded odd. But I'm one of those, I'll-try-anything-once, for the most part. I tried a few more places and just werent as good as the places in Sacramento I would go to until I found this place accidentally. This place is located in the goodwill shopping center on the corner of 185th and baseline. I went for lunch and had the vietnamese sandwich. I was not real impressed with the roll and the amount of veggies they gave me. The flavor was not as good as some other vietnamese sandwich places. Service was a little slow too. There is nothing daringly different here (cuisine wise)--it's all the classic vietnamese dishes, but, the flavor is good & consistent, and the prices are fair. So-so Vietnamese food saddled with odd service and a dirty restaurant are not the keys to winning my heart. I know from personal experience that dirty tables, dirty windows, dirty bathrooms and dirty floors = even dirtier kitchen. There were several dirty tables with glasses and plates but no one made an attempt to clean them during my 15 minutes there. I didn't inspect the bathrooms or the kitchen here but the rest were observed as well. Bad sign for Pho Hoai. It is at this point I decided to make a small to-go order rather than eat at the less than spotless table I was seated at. The food is not worth mentioning, neither good nor horrible. Great prices (7.95 for regular, +$1 for a large) mostly beef, limited on other meats. Seems like an authentic place. Good pho. Young woman sat us down handed us our menus and immediately asked if we knew what we wanted to order(maybe they get lots of regulars?). We told her we needed a minute and then we had to flag her down to order because we didn't think she'd come back to take our order anytime soon. First, let me say that I did not have the pho here. Maybe it's a good place for pho but I obviously am not rating this place based on their pho. I had bun bo xao sa te. I don't really recall what I was expecting after reading the description. All I can remember is that I saw "beef" and "hot sauce" and thought mmmm...NOM. Well, my order arrived. I dumped in the fish sauce and took my first bite without any hot sauce added. After that, I realized it was not the NOM I was expecting. It wasn't terrible. It just didn't blow my head off and barely floated my boat. So I added a little...oh ok, a lot of sriracha to make up for the lack of awesome in my bowl. I pushed through because I was hungry. In the end, I think the best part of the dish were the vegetables. If I have a choice the next time the co-workers want to go out to lunch...I'm voting for something other than Pho Hoai. I enjoy conversations with the owners too, unlike most restaurant owners they are very interesting with diverse interests and community involvements. Served with lots of fresh veggies, herbs and fish sauce. Tasty and definitely guilt free. Very healthy and light. $8.75 This is a full meal, I am definitely so full but don't feel heavy. Other dishes I have tried are : Hue's Spicy Beef Noodles and Lemon Grass Soup. This dish is so good in a Portland rainy day, it makes you warm all over. I rate pho based on broth because I like my pho simple, I usually order it with no meat, just noodles and broth. I think theirs is really good. The real thing I will rate this on though is it's spicy noodle soup. My partner gets it and he's obsessed.
