When the weather outside gets frightful, brothy noodle soups are so delightful. Personally I am not a huge fan of pho, but this place has more than enough broth and noodle combinations to satisfy my craving. I like to stick with vegetarian dishes here and anything with wide rice noodles. What I order usually I cannot pronounce, let alone spell, so I cannot tell you what I had. I just point to the pictures and the waiter knows what I want. I always need some kind of appetizer whenever I go to an Asian restaurant so a place that makes good spring rolls is key. And they make some good spring rolls here and that's important. It's clean enough in here where it won't send me running for the hills, but don't expect anything too fancy either. A small gem in small Des Plaines. I ventured here on a random, quiet Saturday evening for some pho a friend was ranting about, and I was not disappointed. As a continuation of my Viet restaurant tradition, I ordered the house special that comes with all the meats. The broth was very fragrant and would clear even the most congested of sinuses. The noodles were smooth and possessed the ideal consistency/texture. This place ranks as one of the best pho places in my book This place also appears understaffed. The busboy who filled our waters refused to take our orders and we had to wait a considerable amount of time before our orders were submitted. Had the Pho with chicken and clear noodles. Texture of clear noodles was a little weird at first but got used to it. I only have one other place to compare this to in downtown Chicago and this was average in comparison. Still good to have a local place that has it since I work in Des Plaines now. Was not in the mood for Pho, so went with a Pho-free meal. I started with the Shrimp Spring roll for an appetizer, very well prepared and as good as anything I have had in the little Vietnam area of Chicago! For my main dish I had Bo Luc Lac, which features tender cubes of filet mignon marinated in red wine and sautéed in butter and garlic, served over a bed of watercress with a side of white rice. The meat was cooked to perfection and super tasty!! I highly recommend this dish if you are not looking to get your soup on. As MSG makes me ill, I am happy to report that Dun Gia never uses MSG when cooking and also cooks with cholesterol free oil. This is a family run restaurant and they are not very chatty, kind of silent, but the food is good and the restaurant ambiance is nice enough. I went here so often that the server knows me. I'm the Asian girl with the Blackhawks baseball cap that always orders the Pho Special with extra meat. I call them so much that they recognize my phone number as I always order it to go. Their broth is delicious. The meat is good, I like mine with more meat so for a couple bucks more I ask for extra meat. I like their chicken spring rolls, very good. They are down the street from where I live so when the weather gets cold I always stop by to pick up some Pho to go. They're always fast and the quality is always there. In the suburbs! Plus! I have wanted to try this place for Pho, for literally years. Living just minutes away. And I must say it did not disappoint. Friendly, upbeat family atmosphere. Service was awesome on point. We tried the sampler for appetizer, a beef bahn mi, and we each chose a different pho. It was delicious. Also a dessert. Can't go wrong with a boba shake, delicious. Banana coconut sweet rice dessert. If you're familiar with Filipino dessert ginataan/bilo bilo, it's like that just only one fruit in it. Also...can't go wrong, esp on a windy icky chilly fall day. Overall happy delicious experience! We will be back. I'll be back maybe even on my own. Or my next mommy and son date since daddy is more of a taco kinda guy definitely give it a try. I visited Dung Gia last night and continue to enjoy this restaurant. I'm surprised by the negative reviews because I found the staff really friendly and welcoming. This was my fifth visit, and for each of my visits I came with different people- they all loved it! For my most recent visit, I had a rice noodle dish, which was delicious. My sister ordered a curry dish and she said it was great. In my experience, the food has always been fresh and tasty - and the presentation has been great, too. Plus, the prices are very reasonable. I brought two of my colleagues here a few months ago and they raved about it. One of them was visiting from New York and was delighted that we had such a good restaurant in the 'burbs. =) In addition to the fantastic food, the service was really good. The server joked around with us and helped us pick dishes when we were a indecisive. We wound up sitting and talking until the place was closed. They never made us feel rushed or unwelcome, even when we were the last ones there. We had a great time! I agree that the parking isn't great, but if you go on a week night, there is almost always street parking right in front. I would definitely give this place a try! read more

Very small place, but amazing pho. So far my favorite place in the NW suburbs to get cheap and authentic pho. Portion is pretty big, and it doesn't need any hoisin sauce. They have a variety of pho, and I recommend the spicy one if you're feeling under the weather. I had a cold one time when I came here, and I felt a bit better after eating their spicy pho. I am Vietnamese and a foodie visiting from California. I eat San Jose food if anyone knows what that means. (It's like everyone in Vietnam moved to this city so the Vietnamese food is amazing). It's pretty good here, 4 stars. Not enough fish but the sour and flavor is spot on. - Ca Kho (clay pot fish caramelized), also a very authentic dish, 4 stars. Be prepared the service is bad but the pho was good but not the best. We were greeted by a young lady that was very nice. We were given the choice to sit anywhere(we were the only customers). It took a long time for the young lady to take our order(we were about to leave at this time). We order two orders of egg rolls and 4 pho soups. I was appointed that everything came out at the same time. Also when we were done eating no one came to our table to see if we wanted anything else. I came here a lot when I worked in Des Plaines. I tried most of the Pho, I like it. I only regret that I didn't try more of the menu. It gets crowded at lunch time, so try to get there early and come hungry. This place is a family favorite! My family and I go at least 2-4 times a month. The employees actually know what we are going to order when we come in. We get the Pho Ga, spring rolls, beef rolls, chicken wings, the combination fried rice, and the beef loc luc. The food is so fresh and tastes sooo Amazing!! The prices are decent too. I've gone in several times for lunch and the specials are great, which comes with a cup of chicken soup. I am obsessed with the Pho Ga and the Bao Luc Loc !! They have come along way, the waitestaff their english has improved and they have hired more waiters and have air conditioning too! Everyone should go and try this place out, you won't be let down. Catching an earlier than usual train from Chicago, I arrived in Des Plaines an hour earlier than planned. Just off the metra track, a Vietnamese restaurant called Dung Gia sparked my interests. I ordered a beef sate (with a Vietnamese name I couldn't pronounce without graceful help from the waiter--don't worry, the foods are listed in English as well). The entree was preceded by a traditional soup, peppered with rice noodles, finely chopped green onions and minute strips of chicken. The main dish was served promptly, and didn't disappoint. The beef and seasoned, sauteed veggies tasted delicious, seasoned with oriental spices and hinting of the familiar sesame and nuts. There was enough to fill me up for a reasonable price. Next time you're in the area, i'd recommend Dung Gia. read more

Food is really good. Service is unbearably horrible. I know they can't tend to everyone's request when it's busy. But not only once, but of three times I went in to dine, I never got a decent service. Waited forever for everything we needed (paper napkins, cutlery, refill, menu, check....the list goes on). No apologies. I was one of the people who patiently waited for them to open the business several years ago, and they know I was, but still give me the same treatment, I guess that's not going to change. This place has the most pleasant smelling restroom of any Vietnamese restaurant I have ever been in. Whatever air freshener they are using, I implore them not to stop. The spring rolls were nice (although the peanut sauce was thinner than I prefer), the Vietnamese pancake was crispy and flavorful and the pho was satisfying on this cold day. By far my favorite restaurant to get a bowl of Phô. Amazing food and the service is second to none. The gentleman that is their main server remembers everyone and every little detail of their order. This is a family own business in downtown Des Plaines located across the metra train station. It certainly gets my vote for good vietnamese food in the Northern suburbs. The place and decor are unpretentious but the place is clean. The younger generation will wait on you while the elders are cooking in the back. The Pho soups are exactly what you would expect. I'm pretty predictable though and usually order the lunch combination #11: vermicelli with a bunch of stuff on it: calamari, shrimps, beef. It comes with a cup of soup. The flavor balance is just impeccable. I have never been disappointed and will keep on going back for a simple, fine tasting Vietnamese food in the area. my absolute favorite restaurant ever. Their meatball pho with cilantro, lime, and sriracha is my favorite dish... hands down. The spring rolls are insanely delicious. I got their smoothies for the first time today and it's also so so good- used REAL fruit. The place is very clean and cozy.
