Feb 3, 2017 Went there again and ordered the same food as last time. The Asian lady says to me when I first walk in with only, "For one?" The Asian man (he usually works the bar) took my order, brought my food, gave me my check, and gave me my receipt all without saying a single word or crack a smile. This restaurant has potential; however, they need to work on their customer service. I visited the restaurant while I was under the weather for Pho and the waiter came... he didn't introduce himself or say hello etc. he took my order and then when my food came and when I was close to being finished he just brought my bill. He didn't ask me if I needed anything else etc. I had to ask for napkins as if one napkin is enough for a person to use. First off, this isn't a traditional 'Pho' restaurant. It's a psuedo-viet-Chinese Asian restaurant that is run by Chinese folks. There is nothing wrong with that however if you are looking for authentic, vibrant flavors associated with pho, this is not the place. The broth was bland and lacked the anise flavor and richness that is traditional pho. There was also slices of PORK in the pho #1. There is not supposed to be pork in pho. There is not supposed to be tofu in pho. There is not supposed to be shrimp in pho. Anyways, the service was ok, cold as usual in many pho places. The spring rolls were ok, crispy but a little salty. (4.5) I've been battling a pretty bad cold all week. So when my boss said he was running over to PDT and did I want anything I knew the answer- a big ass bowl of Pho Ga. Now I'm no Neal E when it come to Pho reviews, but this isn't my first rodeo either. The broth is excellent, a nice mix of salt, heat, fresh cilantro, basil, and scallions. The chicken was OK, a good amount of it, but not particularly seasoned. It came with a bunch of fresh basil, sprouts big jalapenos. They also had some pre-made single servings of a mix of siracha and fish sauce. I dumped in a full serving of the sauce, 4 jalapenos, and a bunch of sprouts, and a few big fresh basil leaves. Then I mixed the whole works into literally a giant trough and went to work. Pretty Pho (king) tasty! The heat from the peppers oozes into the broth even if you don't eat them, thanks to the seeds and the oils. Siracha is a nice addition, but only if you can handle it. The entire bowl was filling, hot, super FRESH, and pretty tasty. The only real negative I can think of is I am pretty certain it will be just as un pleasurable on the way out as it was pleasurable on the way in. Good stuff, check it out. read more

Pork Pot- This dish was delicious. It's basically Sweet and Sour Pork on steroids. Everything about this dish is great. The sauce they put on the pork had a good consistency of sweet and saltiness. Crispy beef- The crispiest beef I ever had. The most I like about this dish is the beef immediately melts in your mouth. (Don't ask how, it just does) Singapore Noodles - Very typical. Not spicy at all. The shrimps were a good add to this dish Chinese Broccoli - Very typical as well. I asked them to substitute garlic sauce instead of oyster sauce. Trust me, it's better that way. The service was great, but very slow on refilling our water. There is nothing special about the atmosphere. Just go there for the food. read more

Pho you ask... what is Pho... well its... umm.. its... umm... just darn GOOD! Pho Dat Thanh is a small family run Vietnamese restaurant in Columbia. When you first walk in you think, ok standard Asian resturant... right... wrong. Once you open the menu you are greeted to a wide array of Pho choices. Pho, at least to me, is chicken noodle soup on steroids. Take the chicken noodle, add large chunks of chicken, fresh veggies, rice or egg noodles, and finally add a good heaping of seasoning and spice!! Thats what Pho is... just great on a cold winter day (which is when we went) You can also get Pho with Pork and beef, also some places can make it vegetarian too! (which is also why we went) Pho Dat Thanh has a wide array of Pho but also other standard Asian foods, Gen. Tso's chicken, Kung Pow noodles, etc etc... so there is something for everyone! But how can one go here and order anything BUT Pho! The Pho comes out in Large bowls and its piping hot! Everything is fresh and super tasty! I also wanted to try something new and compare, even though I was craving for Pho Dat Thanh's best quail appetizer. Mind you that I get Vietnamese food at home, but I still wanted to go to Pho Dat Thanh. Perhaps it's their slight twist on Vietnamese & Chinese style that makes extra unique that I love it! Now being a Vietnamese, I was absolutely disappointed at An Loi's overpriced-ok food, poor customer service, and small table restaurant. The price was too high for what you're getting--combo appetizer $12.95 for only 2 spring rolls, 2 summer rolls, and a cup of poultry. I spoke to the manager and she said no one has every complained "like you girls". I love me some pho and Pho Dat Tanh gets my vote for best in Baltimore. When I was first introduced to Vietnamese cuisine, I naturally fell in love with pho. Sometimes I would eat pho 7 or more times in one week! I grew so fond of the beefy, soupy delight that I had dreams of marrying a Vietnamese girl who would cook pho for me for the rest of my life... The pho here is great but the other dishes are also very good. From the pork hot pot to the 3-meat lunch special, you really can't go wrong. Looooove this place! We go here often. The Pho is YUMMY and so are the other rice or noodle dishes. I've came here with family, with just friends, or just the boyfriend and I. The peak times tend to me lunch during the weekend, but I haven't had to wait longer than 10 minutes if I had to wait. I didn't rate it as a 5 because they sometimes run out of my fave: salt and pepper porkchops. Crispy porkchops with jalopeno slices (great with vinegar!). The salt and pepper squid isn't bad either, but I prefer the porkchops (my mouth is watering as I write this). I got tired of driving down to Virginia whenever I had a craving for pho, so decided to check this place out. It was actually just what I would expect, filling and good broth. I like tripe and tendon and there wasn't a lot in the bowl but the meat was good. By and large, the BEST thing about this place is their fruit smoothies!! I love the mango and strawberry smoothies. The boba (tapioca) was not the best as I like it sweet and chewy and these were rather bland and harder, but the flavor of the smoothie was amazing. They use real fruit instead of powder which makes it taste much better, and I decided that in the future I'll just get the smoothie without the tapioca. I've also had the shredded crispy beef, the grilled beef appetizer, and the spring rolls, all of which were awesome and seemed pretty darn authentic. The service was good since when you go they usually give me a smile or say goodbye while sometimes giving small talk. The pho noodles are really good and firm and when you get the brisket it isn't like other pho places where they have those weird shiny dragon scale looking stuff on the brisket I also like how when I get my pho there isn't any onion which I hate; I honestly wouldn't care if they put the onions in the broth but just take it out after! I was in the area for work, and really wanted Pho. The only other Pho place in the area - I tried and wasn't crazy about. So I decided to try this spot. I'm starting to think Columbia just isn't the place for good Pho! I walked in and it was incredibly awkward. I had to ask to be seated while the employees just stood around. No one was in the restaurant yet, they had just opened a little while before my arrival. I ordered my standard soup - and it was SO bland. I liked that their fresh herbs included cilantro and that they were actually fresh. Otherwise, the food was SO bland. I couldn't even finish it. I ate my toppings and left the rest of the soup. The broth tasted like water, the noodles were undercooked, and the spring rolls were just bleh. Not flavorful. Service was A-OK. I won't be returning. WATERED DOWN SAUCES. From the bottom of my heart, avoid like the plague. As a member of the local community I had always came to this place to fulfill my pho desires. Although there are several... and I mean Several other pho places whose pho dish is superior in taste, one can't deny the convenience of being so close for your sudden cravings, painful hangovers, and bonding time with your friends and family. So this underrated restaurant was always my go to place. However, recently I have had the last straw. While their recipe hasn't changed much and one can always argue about the portion size, the thing that got me most is... THEY WATERED DOWN THE SAUCES!!!!!! This is a painfully deliberate attempt to save money and is almost a insult to the pho enthusiast who knows this is probably the only pho restruant that waters down their black bean sauce to a soy sauce considency. Seriously it is meant to be almost a ketchup like but instead moves around like water in a bottle. Disgusting. .. Now I must add that this was nighttime and wasn't busy in house therefore it may have been a bad management decision that night. But that incident alone is enough for me to never go again. I let a staff member know that it was too watery and if they could provide another bottle. They brought another soy sauce like imitation that makes me sure that this is currently the norm. In conclusion if this is what they are resorting to save money then I am afraid there are probably many other shortcuts that this store is taking behind the scenes, whether it's expired ingredients, reused vegetables/limes. While I haven't seen this firsthand by them again, watered down sauces are always the start of a slippery slope. Finally managed to stop by for lunch. The facility decor is simple and roomy. The menu has a lot more variety than the typical pho places. I ordered the chim cut quay (roasted quail), pho #2 with well done flank, tendons and tripe and banh xeo. The quail was well-prepared. The skin was crispy but it lacked the typical sweetness I was expecting. And that gap is evident in the pho as well. It was a generous bowl of pho with generous portions of vermicelli and meats. But the broth was a bit lacking. I barely tasted any anise. There were mint leaves and cilantro(?) and sprouts in the herb side dish. The banh xeo was much better. It had the typical recognizable flavors that I expected and it was very savory. Overall, the pho was decent but not outstanding. The other dishes were much more flavorful. I was here once a few months ago, and everything was pretty good to me at that point, and I felt it was worth a second visit. The service was pretty good, and my pho didn't taste too bad, but definitely not one of the better bowls I've had. After my second visit, I've decided I won't be returning. I was a bit wary of the service after reading a few more reviews before my second visit. My party walked in, and the hostess looked up at us, looked back down at what she was doing, and then about 2 minutes later, decided to look back up again and then greet us. The service overall wasn't bad, but it lacked warmth, friendliness, and the overall attitude of wanting to service us. The food was bleh to me. The Bun Bo Hue was kinda tasteless, and the Bo Luc Lac was BIG miss. It was my boyfriend's first time trying it, and I had to convince him that it's not how the dish is typically prepared. The only thing that I'd say was okay tasting was the Banh Xeo, but I could definitely make better at home. I'm not driving farther than columbia for a good bowl of pho, and Pho Dat delivers on a good bowl of pho. Not the best I've had, but it's still awesome on a cold day. Broth is warming and tasty, and the place isn't dirty (that I'll trust them with rare beef for my pho). Also, the spring rolls are pretty decent, and are a requirement for me when I go during the summers. Noooo - this place was a total miss for me. I'm being generous with my two star rating. Spring rolls were decent, crunchy. Who can mess up on a spring roll though? Nearly anything fried, will taste decent - especially if there's an accompanying dipping sauce. I ordered their chicken soup, with those amazing dumplings that they have. I normally gobble those babies up - so plump, delicious, with that lovely, clean tasting chicken broth spilling out of the folds of noodle. Did I get this, even after confirming my order (twice)? Nope! This is what I received - a sweet, sourish soup, with a spicy bite, canned pineapple chunks, sliced tomatoes and loads of bean sprouts. YUCK! Pho Dat Than is one of the staple Columbia asian restaurants, with top notch food and a family friendly atmosphere. Service (as noted in previous posts) is uneven at best. The pho is excellent but the rest of the menu shouldn't be overlooked -- it is comprehensive and features both vietnamese and chinese style dishes. I have had many different foods there and without fail they have been good. The summer rolls are a personal favorite. They are stuffed to the point of bursting with great, fresh ingredients. I usually get an order just for me, no sharing! My standard dish is usually the lemongrass chicken vermicelli -- not only is it a great food by itself, the generous noodle base provides a vehicle for the magically delicious hot & sweet sauces at the table. Bubble drinks & smoothies are available and have been good, especially for the kids. They can usually handle a crowd of people quite well from a seating perspective, but don't expect all your food to come out at once -- they just don't have the service thing down and don't appear to care. The upshot -- the uneven service won't keep us away from the great food. read more

So I just moved to the Columbia area 3 weeks ago from L.A.. I was having a "foodie" discussion with one of my coworkers, and mentioned I was going to miss all the great Asian food I had access to in L.A. The Dim Sum on Sundays, the Thai place on almost every corner, the Korean bbq, the Vietnamese banh mi and noodles, etc. She immediately started rattling off a list of restaurants on Rte. 40 in Ellicot City. Score, I asked the right person. She then said "Do you want to go get Vietnamese tomorrow? there's a really good place in Columbia." I of course agreed, and thus how I ended up at Pho Dat Thanh today. The service was very prompt and efficient, and our order was taken within seconds of deciding. I started with the summer rolls (stuffed with pork, shrimp, and veggies). The summer rolls were pretty standard, nothing that really stood out, but the peanut sauce at this place was fantastic. A full peanut flavor, with a hint of fish sauce??, and a decent amount of chili in it. I tried a bit of my co-workers "vegetarian crispy egg noodles". The brown sauce was extremely tasty, and the veggies were cooked just right. I got the Grilled Pork & Cha Gio Vermicelli. A huge bowl, with the best barbecued pork I've ever had at a Vietnamese place. Actually the whole dish was the best vermicelli dish I've had as far as Vietnamese food. Moving from LA to Baltimore 4 years ago, I sorely missed the variety of Asian cuisine. And then Pho Dat Thanh! This small family owned restaurant in Columbia has been my life-saver. Their menu includes Chinese as well as Vietnamese cuisine and has tied me over well - I will truly miss their kind, fast service when I move back to California. I highly recommend their signature House Special Pho (honestly the best in the city, and I've searched around). Their "regular" size is plenty, but you can supersize for less than a dollar. It comes with fresh bean sprouts and basil, which I always tend to chew on (literally chomping at the bit in anticipation). I also suggest trying their summer rolls (non-fried version of a spring roll) - extra bonus: they are usually served within a few minutes of ordering. My only caveat is their beverage selection. Yes, they have the typical sodas and teas, but their "smoothies" are a bit iffy. I tried one a while back, and I swear it was nothing more than blended ice and some sort of flavoring (I don't even know what it was!) = ICK. read more

This place is a solid 3.5 I tend to agree with most of the reviews of the place and believe I have insight to why service is so horrible. However they usually give me a cup and tell me to go fill it myself. BITTERLY. The food is always good tho. My only beef is that their shrimp is not cleaned properly. This was my first Vietnamese food experience and I was left disappointed. I had the vegetarian bun which I didn't care much for. It had a particular flavor that is not to my liking. The vegetables didn't taste good at all. I think its just a matter of personal taste, not the quality of food at the restaurant. But having no experience to draw from, I am uncertain. Pho Dat Thanh, a solid Vietnamese restaurant among a sea of Chinese, Thai, and Indian restaurants in Columbia, has kept its spot on my family's carry-out rotation since I was a kid. While I haven't actually dined in the restaurant in probably a decade, the carry-out is consistently delicious. Having tried various dishes through the years, there are a couple standouts my family has exclusively ordered in more recent years. The shrimp, chicken, and string bean dish is the definite house favorite.The shrimp and chicken are always tender, the string beans have just enough crunch and flavor, and the delicate sauce has a nice sweetness to it without being overbearing. And while I almost always opt for brown rice, I get the white rice here because of the nice, almost sticky, consistency. The spicy chicken and vegetable egg noodle soup is also delicious. The spice comes from a red pepper mixture, jalapeños, and hot sauce served separately from the broth, so you can make it as spicy (or not) as you'd like, which is always a plus. This dish is a nice substitute for pho, as it has the same concept (noodles, meat, veggies, herbs, spice) but without anise and fennel, which I don't prefer. My step dad gets the combination fried rice, and though there's a generous portion of meat (good for him, not me), it doesn't seem better or worse than anywhere else in the area. I do find it to be on the greasy side, but overall it serves its purpose. The spring rolls are also quite greasy compared to, say, Hunan Manor, though the wrapper is a bit different. Overall, there are definitely some solid dishes at Pho Dat Thanh, though it may take some time to figure out your own personal favorites, as the menu is quite large and perhaps not as familiar as other asian cuisine. read more

This is a decent place for pho. Came here for dinner on Saturday night and it was packed. I like the large #1 with all the meats inside and they gave a good amount of meat. The broth is a little too watery for me so it doesn't stand out as a great pho place which I can tell from their broth.
