Staff is on the older side and no one really speaks English so it's hard to get your order corrected if it comes out wrong. I was in the mood for a spicy noodle soup and this place has been passed so many times and I finally went over to check them out, 27th and Layton across from sonic and the sonic people don't know what their missing. The place is gaudy with all the food signs because that's what menus are for and it's nothing fancy with the cafeteria chairs and tables except for the multipurpose tables like I sat at but not much better, it's not date night spectacular but it gets the job done. I liked the fact that most of people eating in the place was Asian so that's a good sign. I was promptly greeted and seated at the multi purpose table with a lid in the middle but I would not be using that part of the table. The menu was tempting with a lot of great options but I ordered what I came for which ended up being the S3 spicy beef noodle soup. The S3 came in a huge bowl and looked good with a nice garnish plate that the Pho comes with which was nice because I like all that fresh tastes and textures. The S3 had thin slices of beef with liver looking cubes and a meat loaf kind of patty among the noodles and broth, a small shank like piece was left in which was used to make the broth. A small bowl of a tasty paste accompanied my soup which was used. The spicy beef noodle soup was tasty when everything was mixed together but it didn't have the spice level I was seeking so I doused it with generous amounts of the two chili seeded condiments in the table fixings and that did the trick because I got the head sweats and runny nose, one employee came over and pointed to the chili past and laughed at me thinking that I over done it but it was what I wanted. The broth had a reddish oily film on top that got clearer as I took my bites. When everything was mixed together in the bowl it was pretty tasty and filled my spicy noodle crave. Overall I was in the mood for a spicy noodle dish and the place hit the spot and I look forward to trying more of the menu. read more

The food is *excellent* but the service terrible. I went there, by myself and with my family, 15-20 times over a period of about six months. I went because the pho broth and the stir-fries are the best in the city, IMO. We stopped going because of the service and lack of cleanliness. The elderly busboys regularly bring your waters carrying them with their fingers *inside* the cups. We once had one run his bare finger down the inside of a banh mi sandwich as he was trying to figure out what we were asking for (jalapenos). We got C2 com tam thit nuong, bun bo hue and egg roll. The rice dish C2's meat was flavorful but the quality of meat was not great. The lady gave me some shrimp paste to go with the bun bo hue. I added the entire thing to my bowl because the broth was lacking a lot of flavors. Still, nothing so I added fish sauce to make it a bit more salty. However, the spiciness was on point so was the vegetables that went with it. The most disappointing thing was the egg rolls. So underwhelming and bland. I could not finish one egg roll. Pho Cali is the only Vietnamese restaurant in the area that was open past 8pm, so I stopped in for my 8:15pm fix of pho. When we arrived (calling first to make sure it was ok that we were coming in that late) the owner was very kind and very talkative. We sat down, and the first thing I noticed about the place was that it just looks run down. It doesn't look well taken care of or particularly clean. We ordered our food (P2 - pho with rare steak, flank, and well-done brisket). We also got the pork bahn mi. We waited for our food and when it came (brought out to us by the owner), I could tell immediately that it was wrong. We were brought the P1 - pho with rare steak, flank, well done-brisket, TRIPE, MEATBALL, & TENDON. We do not like/eat tripe, meatball, tendon which is why we didn't not order tripe, meatball, or tendon. As the owner set it down, we informed him that this order was incorrect and we do not eat those items. The owner did not seem to care one bit about what we said and told us to pick it out of our bowl of pho. So we were made to pay for the protein that we didn't even eat and we were made to pick out the tripe, tendon, and meatballs because that's not what we ordered. In other news, the bahn mi was just alright, the pork was quite fatty. And my boyfriend ordered a Thai iced tea at the beginning of our meal which never arrived to our table. I've been to Pho Cali a few times, and it's a solid place for pho noodle soup. Stopped in recently and and the P3 Steak Rare, and it was okay. The broth was great, there wasn't a terribly large amount of steak in the soup, and the meat just tasted bland. Overall it wasn't bad, I've just had better. I still wouldn't hesitate to stop in when in the area, 3.5 stars, and might try that pork Banh Mi sandwich next time. read more

I had my first visit to Pho Cali today. Since I had pho last night, I opted for the Bun Bo Hue, which was recommended by a friend of mine. The Bun Bo Hue I had at Pho 124 was rich and spicy. This one was good, but wasn't as rich and I didn't find it spicy at all. It was good, but I liked the one I had at Pho 124 better. This version had pieces of sliced beef, scallions, cilantro, a chunk of pork sausage, a pig's foot, and what I was told was blood sausage, but looked like liver and had the texture of a truffle, except it was made of blood and not chocolate. I wasn't a fan of the blood "cubes" but I enjoyed everything else. I was also surprised by the noodles. They looked like, and had the same texture as, regular spaghetti noodles. They were extra slippery for the chopsticks, but I made it all work. The service was friendly. I was greeted at the door with a handshake. Prices are reasonable and food was good. I definitely want to go back to try the pho, banh mi, banh xeo, and other dishes. Side note, I used the restroom there. Not the cleanest. You've been warned. read more

Tou V, I agree that the Pho broth was sweet. This is uncharacteristic of them based on my many visits, although I haven't been here in about 6-7 months I believe. My Pho #1 Medium was missing the tendon, which is my favorite item and I had 2 quarters of a meatball. I didn't complain but I will of it happens again. I love this place, it has that Vietnamese feel to it, like walking into a restaurant in Vietnam, I mainly have the pho here, which is the best in the city. I try many location for pho, most was a let down, but here it alway good. I get the pho with all the meat and tendon large. The wait staff is friendly, but like most Vietnamese restaurant style, they bring you the food and leave you alone to enjoy. I ordered the shrimp pho and the chicken pho, and both were made from the same sickeningly sweet broth. Granted, my pho experiences have been limited to a brief trip to Vietnam and 20 years in the SF Bay Area, but this was a new and unexpected experience. Is it sweetened to adjust to Midwestern palates? The broth is the most important part of the dish, obviously, in my experience, it's been rich and flavorful, full of complex flavors. The combination Pho was ok. It's just a little too sweet but once you add the limes and other condiments, it was better. The summer rolls were well made with good ingredients. They didn't go the cheap route and actually used Greenleaf lettuce vs iceberg like some other restaurants. The peanut sauce on the other hand was just mediocre.
