Good lord I'm glad I went in to pho bac! I live in Durham and have trouble finding really great Vietnamese food. This is really great. The staff are friendly and attentive. The bun bo Hue was outstanding! I've never had it with a big chunk of pork knuckle in it before but it really is a great variation. The little bits of tasty meat and gelatinous skin and tendon go SO well with the spicy broth and a cold beer. I don't know how often I'll be back to Baltimore but when I am, I'll be visiting pho bac! read more

I have been coming here for yrs, since way before they moved to Canton, yet it impresses me every time. I literally said "this is life" after sipping on their bun bo hue broth today. I have recently been getting bun bo hue because I can't seem to get enough of its deep, dank flavor, but that doesn't mean their pho is subpar by any means. In fact I steal some from my gf every time -- drinking some clean pho broth after eating flavor packed bun bo hue is the best combination since Saturday and Sunday (only if you are not in healthcare). When I tell you that this place is the goat, the ace in the hole, my forever love, I tell no lie. Pho Bac is nestled right in Canton by Patterson Park. It's sits on the corner and parking can be hard since the park is close but all the circling and parallel/angled parking is worth it. They have a table set up for orders so you don't enter far into the restaurant. Their accolades are on display and rightly so! I came in on a Saturday and ordered the beef phó, grilled chicken banh mi, thai tea, spicy noodles and spring rolls. I'd heard good things so I wanted a selection. I initially ordered takeout but they allow up to 2 people for dine in so I sat at the bar to eat my phó and then the rest for takeout. Y'all...y'all. This bowl of phó left me so deliciously happy and full. It came out piping hot and full of gorgeous fat and flavor. Besides being a lovely place to enjoy my meal, it was great to see so many folks getting takeout orders. I had half of my banh mí when I got home and it was so delicious. I was in town for a work conference and got sick with a bad cold. All I wanted was pho. I used a delivery service, so I don't know what Pho Bac is like in person, but their food is so good. Even despite my stuffy nose, the vegetarian broth was so fragrant and flavorful -- I drank it straight from the container, it was that good. I went on Yelp looking for a local spot to grab a lunch sandwich but found something even better. Only a few blocks away from our house in the heart of Canton, I stumbled upon Pho Bac for a quick bahn mi sandwich. This just became one of my absolute favorite restaurants in the city. From the moment we arrived, right up until we paid for our meal, the dinning experience was phenomenal. For starters, the food was fantastic and the staff was so nice. We got a chance to meet the owner of this small family owned restaurant. She introduced herself and her family to us. The staff checked on us to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Now, the food -- just WOW! We started off with the combo plate, and the staff brought out some complimentary fried wings. I ordered the spicy lemongrass noodles with beef and pork (#11a). My friend ordered the beef and rare brisket pho (#8). I finished my entire bowl and normally I don't. We cleaned off our plates and left feeling fulfilled and satisfied. If you're looking for a pho place, or simply looking to spice things up a bit, please check out this amazing restaurant. They were very fast (10 mins) and the staff seemed really nice even though we were only there for a few minutes. The pho was warm, flavorful, and had loads of crisp vegetables. Unfortunately, the crepe wasn't a home run for me. Although I could tell that the ingredients were fresh, I felt that the amount of meat was somewhat limited. On top of that, the price point at Pho Bac was a bit atypical. Summer rolls are usually $3.95 - $5.00 Pho is usually $7.95 - $10.95 Viet Crepe is usually $9.95 - $10.95 However, Pho Bac charged a lot more for each dish: Summer rolls - $7.00 Pho - $13.95 Viet Crepe - $13.95 I guess they can jack up the price because they are the only pho restaurant in the city. The pho in particular had a rich broth and heavy star-anise flavor. They had some more vietnamese traditional items that are hard to find at other local joints like grape leaf wrapped beef. Just moved near the park and have ordered (4) Bun Bo Hue and (1) Pho brisket/sirloin in the 3 weeks I've known about this place. 2 out of 5 soups came out tasteless. It was like eating noodles in hot water. Today I ordered Pho for the first time and it had zero flavor and I am so disappointed, I'm doing something I rarely do - decided to write a review. I just don't understand how this happens, the chef should be tasting what goes out. The broth had ZERO flavor. Other reviewers are right about this place, they are not consistent at all. UPDATE: I've been going here regularly and have been disappointed with the inconstancy. The pho comes out luke warm and not piping hot - the raw meat never has a chance to cook in the broth. The main reason I will not be patronizing this place is; the waitress - I think she's the owner's daughter. They close from 3-4pm everyday which isn't out of the ordinary for a restaurant. But I went there at 2:40pm one day and the girl refused to seat me. But the manner in which she conveyed this was incredibly rude and distasteful. So I asked if I could order to go and she responds with, "I gUeSs..........". Lastly, be warned; this place has been shut down by the heath department at one time for whatever reason. I had high hopes for this spot after seeing many a rave review, but sadly it just missed the mark for me. I ordered the Tofu & Vegetable Clay Pot and Tofu & Vegetable Rolls for takeout. The clay pot dish required immediate reheating and just didn't do anything to impress me. The sauce lacked character and the veggies felt overall undercooked. The broth here is rich and aromatic - you can tell that it's been simmering for hours, which is really the only way to make pho. The noodles are chewy and the meat is tender and sliced thinly. Basil and lime plenty. I've also had their bun bo hue (spicy Vietnamese beef and noodle soup) and the hints of lime and spice remind me of home. People talk about pho being a great hangover cure, but bun bo hue might take the crown. The banh xeo (a Vietnamese crepe) is crispy with all the shrimp, pork belly and bean sprouts inside. My son enjoyed a Pho combo with the cleanest glass-like broth I've ever seen in the area. Pork lemongrass summer rolls were delicious. I have waited years for decent banh mi and the pork variety was perfection with a hint of bbq smoke. There have been a number of local attempts at the complex sammy in our area and all but this one have disappointed. They nailed the crispy crust without too much bread drying out the flavors. I cannot stop thinking about this Pho since i've had it on Saturday. My mom was visiting and shared she had a Pho craving she needed filled. We chose to sit upstairs and it was such a good choice, it was super spacious and quiet. My mother ordered the Jasmine iced tea and loved it. I was craving a soda but the only options were coke, diet coke and ginger ale so I stuck with my water. I ordered the Beef Lemongrass rolls and my mother and bestfriend ordered the shrimp and crab rolls. They were equally delicious and I would definitely get them again. They come in a pair for $5.95. Now let's get into this Pho, I had the rare eye round and well done brisket. I've been to a few Pho spots and this by far was the freshest one. Yet another wonderful little place in Canton. The Ph is the main event but they also have flavorful fresh rolls and other tasty entrees. I recently had the Bun Bo Hue which has a wonderfully spicy lemongrass broth and uses a slightly thicker noodle than traditional Ph. Like many places in the Canton area, this looks like it may have been a private residence at some point. That's part of what gives these restaurants so much charm. If we could give Pho Bac 10 Stars, we would. We were in Baltimore for a conference and hosted a group from Chicago for dinner. Most of our guests never had Vietnamese and they really wanted to try it. We found Pho Bac on Google and decided to try it based on the positive reviews. First, cô (auntie) Trang is amazing. She is very friendly, kind and hands on with all our food order and service during dinner. She recommended several of her specialty dishes and a variety of traditional ones for our guests to try. Our guests were delighted as every dish was fresh and flavorful. Second, the food was very well prepared and a variety of choices on the menu. We had someone who could not eat gluten and she had plenty of choices . The server made sure to let us know if wheat was somehow mixed into any of the sauces so she could choose a substitute. We ordered most of the appetizers; the shrimp and crab meat spring rolls, beef grilled in grape leaves, pork lemongrass rolls and dumplings were winners. The phở soup, grilled meats with rice , bún bò huế soup and bún chả hà nộ were a great hit- especially among those who have never had Vietnamese food. Finally, Pho Bac is a neighborhood restaurant and it could easily be missed if you are not from the area. But we were happy to have found it. As a Vietnamese, I am always excited to introduce others to our authentic cuisine. This is a small, family owned restaurant - cô Trang and her staff just made us out of towners feel so welcomed. They take credit cards, a plus already! Parking is free on the streets. Weekdays should be plentiful but weeknights and weekends may be a little difficult. Seem to be surrounded by a lot of residential didn't really see other restaurants and such. The restaurant is very clean with a lot of natural lighting. The food is delicious but I do have to admit a little on the pricier side in terms of price compared to other viet places in the city (indochine, red boat). Enjoyed the summer rolls, nice that it came with both pork slices and shrimp. They were also beautifully wrapped. The pho combination was heavenly. The broth was aromatic and you could really smell/taste all the spices punching through. Taste like home! I also tried the bun bo hue, another Vietnamese staple. Warning it is spicy. While the broth was flavorful, it lacked the lemongrass strong flavors. I still enjoyed it very much but can't say it brings out the true flavors. They also didn't serve this with the normal red cabbage and culantro herbs (sawtooth herb). Would love to comE back and try the other stuff on the menu. I was in Baltimore for a business trip and I was craving some pho. But not just any pho, but Bun Bo Hue. If you haven't had this type of soup I would reccomend finding it at your local pho spots. It's not easy though because not every pho spot makes it. Anyways, since I didnt have a car to drive to this location I was stoked that they offered delivery of their service.
