I went a here a week ago with some friends and had a great experience, we had a great server, food was good, drinks were strong. However, coming back exactly one week later, it was a totally different experience. Since last time they were out of wings, I decided I wanted to try them and even tho menu says the wings come with fries, that's not the case and are in fact an extra $2. Ok fine...we order the wings, chicken rolls and lobster alfredo. My husband's pasta comes out first, 10 min later the eggs rolls. We finish both plates and still no wings even tho the table behind us had wings and sat down after us, I was told the kitchen was behind. 30 MINUTES after the rolls arrived, the wings come out. I'm not even hungry anymore, ask for a to go box and the check. As I hand over my card, the server casually states the gratuity at 18% is already included...what? I asked when they started doing that since it wasnt on the menu and I was just here 7 days ago, she says last week because ppl weren't tipping. Fine ok...but the tip is calculated after tax (including a covid tax which is also not listed anywhere). Final straw, I asked to speak to the manager, which he did come out but gave some bs explanation about the tipping and then said he would speak with his staff about the timing of food. I've never owned a restaurant but isnt getting a tables food out hot and at about the same time restaurant 101. He gave us some wings as a peace offering, but they could not make up for the overall bad experience. I averaged both visits for 3 stars. read more

It took forever to get my food and then when I got my food and the fries was missing . When I came back the owner got me my fries but only one order when I order two. When I got home, the jerk tacos was so small. They grounded the jerk chicken meat which made the taco smaller. Give real pieces of meat. We paid $14 for ground up chicken and and $4 for skimpy fries. The food here is awesome. I've eaten from here about 4 times. I've tried the Salmon roll which was perfect. The jerk chicken tips very good. The fries are excellent and warms up nicely in the oven of need be. The jerk Salmon burgers are a must try. The caesar salad was ok very fresh ingredients croutons excellent. I just knocked off a star because the salad had way too much caesar dressing for my liking. I automatically assumed if it's a takeout order dressing comes on the side and there was not an option to specify that. I will definitely order the salad again and if ordering online I will call and let them know to place it on the side. All and all I am excited to try new things on their menu. So the first time I had them I wasn't necessarily a fan of the food. HOWEVER, I went back with my friends and had a jerk burger with some of the best fries I had in a long time! Not a single complaint (which is rare for me). The wait was a little bit longer, however they warned us when we walked, so it was expected. Every single table was full, so what can you expect? I bought the lamb chops for 25. 00 dollars and they were so small they may as well not serve them as an entree. The girls. Not young ladies that greeted me were not friendly nor accommodating. But then I notice multiple orders of fries coming out for other guest that came in after us. I asked the waitress and she looks at me as if how dare you then says yours is next. 5 mins later brings out the fries. I had a reservation. I was running late and tried calling to see if the restaurant would be able to still accommodate my party. They did not answer the phone. I called a couple more times while on my way and still no answer. When I arrived, I was told (at the door) brunch ends at 3:45pm. It was about 5 minutes before so I said ok, we'll order for everyone. Then I was told the majority of the party (5) had to be there to be seated. There were 3 of us so it should have been no problem. However, they then said the last order already went in. I went with a few friends. they initially told us a 45 minute wait. well after waiting 2 hours we went to go check to see what was going on and the lady which is the receptionist at the door stated that the owner had a list that was separate from the people that walk in of his friends and they had to be seated before the regular patrons. Super trendy spot. Great music. They did temp checks and provided hand sanitizer before seating us. At least 2 of the servers wore masks on their chins leaving their noses and mouths uncovered. Our food took a long time to come out, which is understandable seeing how busy it was. It would have been nice if it had been communicated though. We had the Blacker the Berry drink ($15). It was really good and strong as it should be for $15. The jerk egg rolls were filled to capacity and super tasty! The lamb chops were alright, but kinda small for $25. My jerk chicken tips w/ mild sauce and fries came out burnt . I tried to drown it in extra mild sauce in hopes of making it edible, but that didn't work. We informed our server about the burnt tips at the end of the night and she said she would have them remake them but the kitchen was closed. When I was a student at UIC I would have loved a place like Phlavz but it didn't exist back then. Now the students and staff there are so lucky because Phlavz is AMAZING! The food and drinks are so good (my faves are the salmon egg rolls and the blacker the berry drink), the staff is super friendly, and the vibe is amazing! The music and ambiance make you want to stay for hours. They also do happy hour during the week which is great because not a lot of places in the area do so. I would highly suggest you check this place out if you're looking for a chill spot with good food and drinks. read more

For the third time in a row I was completely disappointed. I live in the western suburbs, tried calling before making the 35 minute drive to Phlvaz, and as usual they can't pick up the phone. I checked their social media, and said the restaurant was open today til 9pm. When I arrived, they wouldn't even let us walk in. We were told that at 7:17pm they were no longer taking any To-Go orders. This is complete bullshit for the fact that this is the third time this has happened! Now I can understand during the main months of the pandemic shutdown that they were limited on capacity and workers, but why on a Monday evening in the middle of the summer, they can't even pick up the phone so they can tell me that they aren't able to take my business?! I hate to leave a bad review because the food is great, but it's a very sad thing that the customer service is SO poor that I feel compelled to do so. This place was just ghetto as ever. We kept saying it gives strip club vibes minus the strippers. They make you wear a mask inside but the tables are so close to each other I could reach off someone else's plate at the next table. My server was a light skin woman who was very unfriendly and barely checked on us. My boyfriends food came out first and it was cold. I got the lamb chops and they were not super hot or fresh. The water was fresh out the faucet. They were out of lots of menu items. I really came back to say do not eat here. I only ate there yesterday and I've been on the toilet four times this morning. A friend of mine told me about this restaurant so we decided to try it out. We went to the Maxwell Street location. It was about an hour wait but it was well worth it. We ordered jerk chicken Alfredo pasta (Delicious) jerk chicken tips with french fries (Delicious) and the jerk chicken rolls (Delicious). I wanted to give this restaurant five stars but it was only one thing that rubbed me the wrong way. When I approach the door and was about to enter, the security guard open the door and before I could enter he stopped me with his hand in my chest asking me can I help you? as if this was something different than just a restaurant. I told him that we are here to eat‍ He then told me that it was a wait to be seated, I told him ok then he let me enter to see the host. After an hour wait I was greeted by the same guard with a pat down, a metal detector and purse search for my friend. That made me feel some type of way considering it was midday I have to be honest. Once we got inside, the atmosphere and staff was great including the food. Overall great experience minus the security, maybe I'm missing something with that whole situation. Great job Phlavz!!! This place is a little vibe. It feels very club like but it's a restaurant. There is a bouncer at the front checking id with a host. They check for seating availability before they allow you in the door. Once inside it's smaller than you would think from the outside. I sat at the bar and bartender was nice and attentive. The drinks are club size. The food was pretty good. They don't have hot sauce at all which personally i think is odd for a black establishment and on the menu you can't see what the ingredients are in food options so my lobster tacos had cheese which i don't normally eat. And there are no ketchup bottles just individual packets I think due to covid. Overall it's viby and the food is pretty good. read more

In December of 2019, my husband and I decided to celebrate our anniversary at Phlavz. It was our first (and most certainly our LAST) visit to the new establishment. On arrival, we were pleasantly greeted by the security. On entry, we waited for approximately 25 minutes before being seated. Once seated, we waited another 10 minutes before our server took our order. We began with appetizers of FRIED jerk wings, salmon rolls and jerk chicken rolls (we also placed a to-go order of their jerk tips). When our food finally arrived (this took at least another 25 minutes), we received NAKED jerk wings and NOT fried, as ordered. We were honestly too hungry to wait again for those to be corrected, so we just kept the naked wings. We got our bill, paid in cash and waited for at least 30 minutes on our to-go order. When we still had not received it, my husband asked the sever how long again, and she said ten more minutes. When ten minutes passed, I asked, "How much longer on the tips?" She said, "If it isn't ready in 5 minutes, I will comp you." I set my timer for five minutes and when it went off, since our server was at another table taking shots with other guests......I explained the situation to a different server. She was very pleasant and immediately went to the kitchen. She later returned with the jerk tips. She saw that I was visibly upset and said she would get our server. Who was still mingling with other guests...and having more drinks. When our original server arrived, she said she would get her manager. We waited for another 10 minutes. The server returned (without her manager) and said, "My manager said since they were backed up in the kitchen, we could give you your money back but we'll keep the tips..." I said, "Okay..." After another 10 minutes, the manager shows up with a print out of our bill, and says, "Here is the refund. It will go back on your card." My husband and I both looked at her and said, "...BUT WE PAID WITH CASH!" Sighhhhhhh After more waiting (we got our cash back) and left WITHOUT OUR TIPS! What we DID receive last night was HORRIBLE SERVICE FROM BOTH THE SERVICE AND MANAGERIAL PERSONNEL (shame on the manager), AN ATROCIOUS ANNIVERSARY EXPERIENCE, A HIGHER PARKING BILL (because instead of paying for 0-2 hours, after the long wait, we now had to pay for 3-5 hours), WASTED TIME (that my husband and I could have enjoyed elsewhere) and an overall HORRIBLE FIRST TIME EXPERIENCE that has left a devastatingly bitter taste in our mouths. I have never left a review before but this is the absolute worst thing we've experienced through our years of anniversary dining! Given that I must leave at least one star for this review to post, let's consider this one star a result of the kindness displayed by the security and the other server who tried to take care of us while our original server was ELSEWHERE taking shots! We wanted to celebrate OUR Black Love by supporting Black business, but PEOPLE PLEASE DO BETTER! This review would NOT have been written if the manager had taken care of her unsatisfied customers as any DECENT manager does... I hope this review is a learning lesson for the staff at Phlavz Bar & Grille. Please be more attentive to the needs of ALL customers. A friend suggested that we try this place on a Saturday evening, since it was new, black owned, and played music with food and drinks which meant we would not have to bounce around to get both. When we arrived there was a line, which was no biggie - its Covid, its Saturday, and its nice outside. We waited in line for about 30 minutes (with mask ons) and socially distanced. Once we finally got inside the waitress informed us AFTER taking our cocktail orders that the kitchen was closed - which immediately made us confused because when the hostess sat us they specifically asked if we wanted to sit at a bar stool table and we said no because we were eating. Nevertheless here we were 5 minutes later being told the kitchen was closed. The waitress then brings over a gentlemen whom i assume was the manager or Owner (who could of stayed where he was ) but she was trying.. He then tells us the only 3 items on the menu he could get made for us "last minute" ... In an attempt to again support my people - I agree, to the dislike of my sister who at this point wants to leave. But the place is new and 'black" so I am trying to give them a chance. The drinks come .. they are liquorless, even though they are $16 each... & my sisters Margarita is so sweet I think the entire mix was used. Sooo drinks are horrible. But SWV is playing so I try to just enjoy the tunes. After all, its Saturday night!! As I snapping my fingers, I notice that another man is sitting in a high chair over the kitchen food window looking over the plates come out. Mind you this man is glove-less, apron-less, mask-less, and hairnet-less. I pay attention to how the plates are touching his hands, shirt, and he has an ink pin and paper that he is constantly touching in between the plates that are being passed literally directly under is nasal passages and maskless mouth!! As the disgust literally takes over me ... I watch as the contaminated plate is handed to the waitress and you bet she brings it to my table. At that point, IM OVER IT! I tell the waitress the issue, refuse the food, and ask for the check, and against my sister's approval I pay the entire meal even tho we did NOT eat ANY OF IT! I tip the waitress in Cash as she was the nicest thing about the entire place because she really was trying... the owner or Manager never came back to the table to apologize or address the issue. In fact he became Stevie Wonder and suddenly acted like the table was invisible. I paid, we left and went and had Mexican food (you can always count on the Hispanics to be open, and on point) .. but I was overly disappointed with Phlavz and I will not be back, or try them again, or recommend them. I would hope that people understand that being in the hospitality business requires you to be hospitable, service driven, and have great pleasant communication. read more

I want to start off by saying that I usually enjoy Phlavz. The food and the service. Today however, the service was not up to par. I ordered for pickup from UberEats. I received the notification that my food was ready for pickup and arrived about 2 minutes later. Once I advised the host that I was picking up an order and provided my name I was told my order wasn't ready and sometimes a notification is sent before the order is complete... interesting. She then confirmed my order and went back to the kitchen. Came back and told me they were just packing up my second dish. Ten minutes later, I still hadn't received my order. I asked if my other dish could be remade as now it would be cold, and who wants cold lobster fries? She asked the kitchen but provided me with no update as to wether they could. Another 10-15 minutes later and finally I received my food. When asked if the lobster fries had been remade she stated she didn't know. So 25 minutes waiting for an order that was supposed to be ready minutes before I arrived. Great food is important in a restaurant but service is equally if not more important. Oh and the gentleman that was also at the door never addressed me at all. read more
