After having lunch next door, I was surprised to see the line extend outside the entrance for Phinology Coffee. I guess the demand for a Vietnamese coffee shop in the Convoy District was high as these businesses have been popping up in other neighborhoods around the city. Phinology Coffee replaced a boba tea shop that closed because it unfortunately went head-to-head with a newer adjacent neighbor in an internal corner suite of the Convoy Village Shopping Center. The interior was refurbished with modern wood tones. All of the dozen or so tables were completely occupied. A self-service tablet to place an order was stationed near the entrance which was why the queue went outside the doorway. Nine types of phin drip coffee and seven kinds of matcha drinks made up the menu offerings. Screens showing their serving size and respective prices were hanging behind the service counter. The Mango Matcha was sold out so I picked a different matcha flavor, Banana Cloud. Stone ground PARU matcha was used and whisked with oat milk to make the various blends. Most places offer a choice of milk, but no substitutions were allowed here. They also indicated that less ice would mean less liquid in the cup to maintain the recipe integrity. My 16 oz serving with a banana flavored foam cost eight dollars. The matcha flavor was prominent as expected for such a premium source. For the high volume of orders, the staff did an efficient job of making drinks without too long of a wait.

Came in and it was already packed in the afternoon. There is a kiosk to order from. I got the banana coffee and I love the taste of bold viet coffee. I only wish that we were able to make adjustment to the sweet level. Although it looked busy, the drink came out fast. Nice place to hang out or study. It is in a busy complex.

Came here with my husband on a Thursday. We were looking to try a new coffee spot. Didn't know they switched out Chakaa for Phinology and it did not disappoint. Was greeted upon walking in (12p) and the lady at the counter took our order right away, no line. She was so friendly and helpful and even asked my husband if he wanted to sample any of the drinks. Didn't know you could do that! I ordered the banana cloud matcha and didn't have to wait long. The drink was good, the banana foam was amazing. I was definitely awake and energized after finishing my drink. This cafe is a pretty popular place to study or get some work done. Would come back!

Matcha einspanner ($8) and strawberry matcha latte ($8)

I stopped by Phinology in the middle of a weekday, and it was already quite busy. There was a mix of people working on their laptops, and others catching up over drinks. I ordered at the kiosk, and my drinks were ready within five minutes. I ordered the: -Matcha einspanner: The matcha flavor was well-balanced, and I really enjoyed the whipped cream on top. -Strawberry matcha latte: The strawberry paired nicely with the matcha, and wasn't overly sweet. While the drinks were good quality, I was surprised by how small they were, especially since they were $8 each. The person in front of me requested 50% ice, and I noticed his drink was only filled halfway. Overall, it's still a solid spot for coffee and tea, but be prepared for higher prices and smaller portions.

Absolutely obsessed with this new Vietnamese coffee spot. So glad they replaced the old boba place that used to be here because this feels like a major upgrade. The space is modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed: minimal but still warm and inviting. It's the kind of place you actually want to hang out in, do remote work, or just enjoying a slow morning. Stopped by after an early gym session with my husband and shared the Vietnamese Einspanner, which mad delivered. The drink had such a rich, smooth coffee base balanced perfectly with condensed milk and that creamy topping. It honestly tasted nostalgic: my husband said it reminded him of home, and for me it was like sipping on my father-in-law's freshly brewed Vietnamese coffee with just the right amount of sweet and boldness. Shoutout to Trung, who made the whole experience even better. He chatted with us, made us feel genuinely welcomed, and took care of us like family. It makes all the difference. I'm super sensitive to caffeine and usually only manage a few sips of coffee before tapping out, but this was so good I ended up drinking half (which says a lot). Fair warning: I was absolutely wired for the rest of the day Great coffee, great people, great atmosphere. Definitely coming back!

My friend and I came on Sunday afternoon to check out this new matcha Vietnamese coffee spot next to Yun tea. There was a line out the door when we got there. I ordered the matcha foam coffee and my friend got the einspanner matcha which comes out in a small size. You can choose to have the house coffee or Vietnamese coffee. I got mine with Vietnamese coffee. The drinks didn't come out as quickly but maybe they were very busy. I was hoping that the Vietnamese coffee profile would come out stronger but I didn't quite get that. My friend said the matcha was ok. Overall, it wasn't bad but it also wasn't my favorite. The interior was sleek and modern. There was spacious seating. They have a good flow of customers.

I just have to say proceed with caution. I went maybe a month after it opened and it was crowded and full of people chatting or working on their laptops so it looks like a good work from home space. Easy to park in the shopping plaza because it's an open parking lot and complementary for two hours. My warning is that their coffee is incredibly strong. I got the house coffee in one of the lattes, not even the Vietnamese coffee, and I was uncomfortable and slightly nauseous for several hours. And I drink 1-2 cups coffee every day so I'm not a caffeine novice. I messaged a few of my friends who got coffee there and one was saying that he felt like he had heart palpitations haha. Their coffee is incredibly strong, so just be prepared, that's all. It tasted delicious, but it's got a lottt of caffeine. I am not sure if I would return unless there was a half caf option.

I originally came for their matcha drinks but saw that there was a Banana Foam Coffee and had to get it! You can choose either the house or Viet Coffee and I went with the latter for a stronger and sweeter drink. I have a pretty low caffeine tolerance so by the time I finished a third of it, I was wired! I couldn't really mix the foam (it's thick) into the drink so I didn't get that much of a banana flavor but as a Viet Coffee, it's pretty good. I came early to also study a bit and was able to snag a table. There are a lot of tables and outlets along the wall and cushioned seats. By 10AM Saturday, the line was already out of the door but most people left once they got their drinks. I didn't really notice anyone prowling for a table the entire time so I don't think this place is really known to be a study or hangout spot. There's free WiFi but it's limited to two hours to match the complimentary 2 hour parking in the lot. One thing I didn't like about Phinology as a study spot was the lighting. It seemed pretty dim and that's even with the natural light coming through the windows. Will definitely be back to try their matcha drinks. For their grand opening, all of the drinks are 20% off and I'm not sure how long that'll last so hurry!

Matcha Latte with Oat Milk - regular sweetness.

New spot around town! They are located in a large plaza in the Convoy area. Tons of parking and spacious. Super cute atmosphere. The space is very welcoming, clean and chic. The owner and staffs are super friendly and alert to guest walking into the cafe, giving warm welcome. I ordered a Matcha Latte with oat milk, regular sweetness. The matcha was earthy, clean and whisked so smooth! It was a bit too much milk to matcha ratio but the matcha notes were present. I'll be back to try their coffees and other matcha lattes. Come give them a try, you won't be disappointed!

Menu from soft opening. April 22 is the last day for 20%!

New Vietnamese coffee shop in Convoy! Parking is so bad in this lot, but it is what it is. Phinology took over Chakka, next to Jun. Ironically I just had their matcha though.. maybe it's better to get the Viet coffee. The matcha was ok. I actually tried the matcha latte from Labora (same exact: less ice, no sugar, oat milk), and the one at Labora tasted better. The banana foam here didn't have much of a banana flavor. If you use really ripe bananas, the foam should taste good, but this one just wasn't right. I did get 20% off for their soft opening though. Sorry, Phinology! I'll come back to try your coffee next time. It was too much caffeine for me today.

Jack M.

I stopped this new Vietnamese fee House and had the matcha latte with no added sweetener. The Vietnamese coffee will come later. I paid through their kiosk system, which was simple enough. The matcha was very good and of very good quality. Then only thing I did not like was that they did not fill it all the way to the top. The cup was about 80% filled, including the ice. I was a little bummed about that. The you lady at the counter was nice. They offer a very good amount of inside seating. Oh yes! I hope they carry raw organic honey in the future as a sweetener option. They offer quite the variety of Vietnamese coffee beverages. I did not see any food items.

WuzupWuzup! New coffee spot has just dropped in kearny mesa area and I had to check it out. Prices are up to date standards, plenty of seating for you and your company. Service is quick, great communication when you need help, and once you order they seem to have it done within a short time. Best time to go is when they open as it can be busy shortly after. I really enjoyed the strawberry matcha and I recommend getting with cold foam added to it for some extra flavor. The Vietnamese coffee is nice and strong, so if you like bold coffee that will wake the eyeballs up....come check out phinology. Sincerely robonomnomreviews

I'm going to miss CHAKAA, but I love the new renovations made by Phinology! The interior design and comfortable, sleek chairs create a nice study spot with multiple accessible outlets. The matcha was so yummy, and the Vietnamese coffee didn't leave a bitter aftertaste. I appreciated the 20% off discount during soft opening, and samples for tasting! I would definitely love to sit here with a cup of matcha to get some work done!

So, I'll leave a legitimate review along with pictures. Initially, we were ambivalent about trying this place due to the high prices but they also have an exceptional rating on Google and Yelp. 4.9 on both Google and Yelp, that's rare. We bit the bullet and headed there. Parking can be tough but luckily we found parking in front of the restaurant. It was free after 8 pm on a Tuesday. If you go earlier or on the weekends, I would read the parking sign more carefully. There might be free street parking on the left side behind the restaurant. Don't quote me on that. Like I said, parking is not as easy as other places in SD. There are quite a bit of tables to sit in. It wasn't busy when we went. Yes, they do have a very large menu with like 1,000 items. We are not vegetarian or vegan but we have tried vegan places in Denver, CO. We ordered eel Helen pho roll, crispy beef chestnut and pineapple banh mi, and duck wonton noodle soup. The owner also gave us complimentary desserts, vegan corn pudding and vegan creme. She also gave us cookies and two cups of that delicious special water to go. That special water is hands down one of the best drinks I've ever had. Prices range $22-30. -eel Helen pho roll 5 - not real eel but this was very tasty. I like that the rolls don't fall apart easily. -crispy beef chestnut and pineapple banh mi 5 - the bread has a crispy exterior and the inside is moist. The chestnuts and pineapple really pair well together. I devoured this fast. -duck wonton noodle soup 5 - I really like the broth and the noodles. -vegan corn pudding 5 - this has corn with some coconut. It's a light dessert. -vegan creme 5 - this tastes like the real thing. I honestly wanted more.

Paired alongside fresh herbs like cilantro, shiso, argula and radicchio. The sesame rice crackers were light and airy. Smoked Dry Aged Duck (5/5) - Perfectly cooked, sweet and salty aged smoked duck paired with rice noodles, herbs and 2 different sauces. I appreciated the many ways you can wrap and enjoy the duck. I do wish the slices of duck were either smaller or thinner - it's hard to eat in one bite. Whole Fried Sand Bass (4/5) - I'll always order a whole firied fish wherever I go and this was no expection. I loved the sweet & sour ginger sauce. The fish was a bit over-fried in my personal opinion, but the inside is still very soft and tender. Sweet & Sour Rice Noodles (5/5) - Aboslutely delicious! Slippery and cold rice noodles dressed in fish sauce and other seasonings. It's not overpowering at all and goes great with the Whole Fried fish as well. Seasame Soiree Cocktail (5/5) - A very unique drink made with gin, ginger, coconut, seasame seeds and more. It was very fragrant in the best way. The flavor really develops after the first sip. I love how nutty and decadent yet light this drink is. Overall, I had a great experience here and this is one of the top restaurants I've had the pleasure of enjoying in SD. Highly reccomend especially if you like Vietnamese food / fish-sauce forward dishes. (At least for the dishes I ordered)
