Found my new favorite spot for a biscoff matcha! It has the perfect balance of biscoff and matcha. Matcha was great quality as well. Perfect spot for studying or working!
Coffee was great! Strong and delicious! Loved the ambiance too. Super clean with awesome decor. Service is what kept me from giving 5 stars. I get it's a gloomy Sunday morning, but the entire staff seemed uninterested and not very welcoming. Definitely took away from an otherwise great experience.
Love stopping by here when I can. I've only been in the morning and parking has been easy in the large lot. You can order with a human or the screen. They'll ask if you want Vietnamese coffee or regular coffee. It's stronger with Vietnamese coffee. Recommend that option. The wait time for your drink is quick. They are consistent with their quality. I've tried maybe around 4 different flavors, all coffee based, and I haven't been able to choose a favorite cause they're all good. If you want to enjoy your drink, bring a book or your laptop. Plenty of tables and the it's on the quiet side so you can actually focus.

We ordered with the staff who was very helpful (sorry I didn't get your name) with my sister's questions about the differences of their coffees. I ended up ordering the double maple (a seasonal drink), and my sister ordered the biscoff foam coffee with Vietnamese coffee as the base. Both coffees were absolutely delicious! I can't stop thinking about the maple foam. It tastes like a salted maple foam, which I really loved. Once everything was mixed together it tasted even better. We sat by the window, and overall it was a great coffee date with my sister. Plenty of parking in the lot around 3-4 pm, but it does get harder to find parking later on in the evening during dinner time as they do share the same parking lot with Olleh BBQ, and a few other places. I'll definitely be back here for that double maple iced coffee before it leaves! They also had quite a few matcha options that looked really good too, but didn't get to try.
Before coming here, be aware that they serve Vietnamese coffee and do not have a classic espresso bar in the sense of getting straight espresso shots, Americanos, flat whites, and that sort of thing. This is high-caffeine, high-sugar Vietnamese rocket fuel. If you're looking for that, Phinology is a legit option. The interior aesthetic and vibe is very nice, and reminds me of the type of hyper-modern, wood-surfaced coffee shops becoming increasingly popular in central and northern Vietnam, as well as across major Japanese cities. I ordered a House Coffee and a Biscoff Foam Coffee. Both were very good tasting, since they're essentially sugar, milk, and caffeine bombs--unnatural treasures your body will seek like a heat-seeking missile toward a jet engine. But this is definitely a very specific type of coffee experience that is not for those looking for more classic espresso bar offerings.

Located on Convoy, Phinology had been on my bookmarks for the past few months! I've been meaning to try it out when I stop by San Diego to visit family. Parking is a bit hard, especially during lunch and dinner hours. Be careful of drivers in parking lot! We walked inside and were immediately impressed by their gigantic Phins. I have never seen such a big Phin before - it was dripping some drip coffee and doing its magic. The interior is very clean and there were many tables and chairs for coffee patrons. They were taking orders with the kiosk and with a cashier. She quickly took our orders and was very kind and patient. We had ordered a Biscoff foam coffee and a regular house coffee. The biscoff foam coffee was delicious! I will say their Vietnamese coffee isn't strong, but you can taste the authenticity. The biscoff was sprinkled on top and it doesn't take away from the true beauty of the coffee. Their house coffee, in my opinion, was better than my biscoff foam coffee. It was strong and aromatic, but not overwhelming. The caffeine still packs a punch. Although it was good, I would probably still choose a different coffee shop for Vietnamese coffee. It wasn't quite strong enough for me here. I'd recommend it to others to try because it is still a place everyone should experience!

My drink was accidentally made with no ice, so I asked for a cup of ice to add afterwards. Note: if you do "no ice," the drink looks like there is "less" to save the integrity of the ratios. That's perfectly reasonable! 4/5 The Vietnamese coffee was really strong, but I liked that you could choose from three options (Vietnamese coffee, black coffee or house coffee) for varying strength and flavor. 4/5 I would like to come back again to try their banana or ube coffees!

Nicely decorated cafe with lots of indoor seating. The cafe was pretty quiet for a great place to get things done. The two drinks I got were Einspanner Vietnamese Coffee and the Strawberry Shortcake Matcha! Both were super delicious! Love the coffee and the matcha taste in both drinks. The strawberry shortcake matcha was sweet, but that was expected. There were so drinks I wanted to try! Can't wait to go back to try out other ones. Service was great and quick! Highly recommend this place!
Convoy has 50+ coffee and tea spots and they're always changing. Please go to one where the drink is not literally half ice and a true full cup is $12. :( The matcha was good, but there's higher quality and stronger concentrations for a better price nearby.
Oh this is now apart of my matcha rotation. Their mango matcha is the best mango matcha I've tried and I thought I had already found it! The way they use just fresh mango to bring the flavor through, but it's so well balanced with the deep creamy matcha... This is refreshing, not too sweet, my summer dream. Phinology is one of the newer coffee shops in San Diego and I was really excited to try it! They are a sister shop of Yun Tea next door and that place is my go to as well. We got the Ube Vietnamese Coffee and the Biscoff Matcha. The Ube Viet was really good and the coffee flavor was strong! As for the Biscoff Matcha, initially I got less sweet as I always do but it tasted more like 0% sweet. I ended up having to ask them to add sweetener and it tasted much better after that. Would recommend sticking to regular sweet here! I did also get less ice and I wish they had an option for no ice +$0.80 or something like that to keep the matcha full. I saw someone get a no ice matcha latte and it was more like 50% full without ice. The vibes are really cute and there are a lot of study/work spaces for people with outlets as well. Service was great. I would come back again!

Saw this jasmine drink and knew I had to try it! I ordered it as is, and it was perfect. Light, refreshing, and not too sweet. It's also a great option for my caffeine-sensitive girlies who still want to enjoy a cute drink and a social outing without overdoing the caffeine. Definitely worth trying! The best matcha spot in SD hands down. My only complaint is their hours and I wish they stayed opened later. Phinology is very clean, large, and has the most comfortable chairs out of all the cafes I've been to in San Diego. They also are mindful that the majority of their customers are students or people WFH and don't play their music that loudly. If you do come to do work here, there are plenty of outlets and the wifi is strong. The matcha here is very smooth and not grainy at all. Perfect level of sweetness as well. Even when it's busy your drinks come out fast. Their syrups are all made in house which you can tell by the taste and quality of the drinks. The strawberry matcha is top tier and their summer teas were very refreshing and delicious. If only they could keep the teas year round! If you are feeling hungry, their butter croissant is not the best I've had, but it will make do since they heat it up. Hopefully they can add some food items in the future. Was very sad to see Chakaa go but I couldn't even recognize the establishment from the inside once it transformed into Phinology. The upscale furniture and countertop stood out to me and felt like luxury. I could definitely see myself doing some work here and being productive! Theres a kiosk to place an order but you are still greeted by the staff. Most people, including me, ordered from the tablet. I got the matcha Einspanner. It was quite heavy that I drank so much cream in order to get to the matcha part. I think the consistency was more stiff and heavy as opposed to more silkier and fluffy. I would order something less dense next time, but the drink was still primarily matcha tea flavored. I stayed for a bit to enjoy some reading as the music was not loud at the time and it was very relaxing! Hopefully their coffee is more their strong suit but the matcha isn't a bad choice. I loved the Phinology coffee. It was perfectly sweet and it was my first time trying a cold foam topping on top of Vietnamese coffee. Most places do a cream top but I love how the foam tops at phinology have density so they don't just disappear into the drink and are lighter because it's not a chunk of heavy cream. First of all, I'm pretty sure my drink was ready in .2 seconds from the time I placed my order on the kiosk. While this likely means that they've premake the different parts of their drinks, I have to say, this was one of the better matcha lattes I've had! Matcha tasted high quality and even with a cream top, was pronounced and not at all overpowered by the milk or flavoring. Super cute place with yummy vietnamese coffee! This was my first time and I got the marble coffee and it's perfectly sweet and light for my taste. I'm definitely going to come back to try their other drinks! The interior is very clean with plenty of seating. Me and my HUBBY came here right after eating at Mikiya which was right across the street from Phinology Coffee!! We were greeted right away by a very nice young man named Trung... BANANA MATCHA: 8/10 The matcha was strong and I really entire it but the banana cream had very little banana flavor in it... UBE COFFEE: 9/10 The coffee was rich and creamy. Ordered the Ube Cloud Matcha. I waited less than five minutes for my drink. There were people studying and so I just stood by the door as I waited. I got regular sweetness. The first sip was pretty strong, but as the ice melted it diluted a bit. Overall a good drink, and a quick stop. read more
This spot replaced Chakaa. I went during soft opening, and they were doing a 20% discount. I had pretty high expectations for the matcha coming in because people on tiktok were saying they use paru matcha. I'm not sure if it's because I went during soft opening, but my double matcha tasted really milky :( The faint matcha flavor also tasted a little grainy. The cream top also wasn't that strong in matcha flavor at all. I did get 0% sugar, but not sure if that's the reason. I heard it got better though, so I am looking forward to trying it again! Looking for boba and ended up getting Match Seeing how a lot of boba places open up at 11 am, finding Phinology for some delicious match hit the spot! Due to my being a fan of the "Ooobe" - aka Ube, I got the Ube Cloud Matcha which ended up being a great choice! Loved I was able to adjust the sweetness too! This was our first time trying Phinology Coffee, and it ended up being one of the best coffee stops from our San Diego visit. We found it through Yelp while looking for coffee and decided to take a chance based on the great reviews. We ordered the Banana Foam Coffee and Biscoff Foam Coffee, and both were excellent. The coffee was bold and strong but still smooth, creamy, and perfectly sweet. My daughter enjoyed hers so much she finished it almost immediately. The Banana Foam Coffee was especially good. The banana flavor was balanced and noticeable without tasting artificial or overpowering. I've tried banana coffee at other places, and this one is definitely one of the better versions. I also liked that you can choose between house coffee and Vietnamese coffee. My daughter and I went with the house coffee, while my husband chose the Vietnamese coffee for a stronger, bolder flavor. Both options worked really well with the foam drinks. Service was fast and friendly. The shop is cute but small, and it was very busy when we visited. Every seat was taken, and it can get loud with people constantly coming and going, so we took our drinks to go. They're located in a plaza with plenty of parking, although finding a spot may be harder during peak hours because there are several other popular restaurants nearby. Overall, the drinks were amazing, and we would definitely come back the next time we're in San Diego. read more

After having lunch next door, I was surprised to see the line extend outside the entrance for Phinology Coffee. I guess the demand for a Vietnamese coffee shop in the Convoy District was high as these businesses have been popping up in other neighborhoods around the city. Phinology Coffee replaced a boba tea shop that closed because it unfortunately went head-to-head with a newer adjacent neighbor in an internal corner suite of the Convoy Village Shopping Center. The interior was refurbished with modern wood tones. All of the dozen or so tables were completely occupied. A self-service tablet to place an order was stationed near the entrance which was why the queue went outside the doorway. Nine types of phin drip coffee and seven kinds of matcha drinks made up the menu offerings. Screens showing their serving size and respective prices were hanging behind the service counter. The Mango Matcha was sold out so I picked a different matcha flavor, Banana Cloud. Stone ground PARU matcha was used and whisked with oat milk to make the various blends. Most places offer a choice of milk, but no substitutions were allowed here. They also indicated that less ice would mean less liquid in the cup to maintain the recipe integrity. My 16 oz serving with a banana flavored foam cost eight dollars. The matcha flavor was prominent as expected for such a premium source. For the high volume of orders, the staff did an efficient job of making drinks without too long of a wait. read more

Came on memorial day and it was super busy. They only have indoor space and all tables were full when we got there around 10. You can order at a kiosk or at the counter. Tried their ube coffee. Ube was pretty mild but the drink overall was very smooth and delicious. They have two different viet coffee bases and she was nice enough to let me try both before committing. one is milkier and sweeter and the other is more coffee forward. Came here on a Sunday morning and it was very busy! They have a kiosk and a cash register you can order at that made the line go faster We were lucky to find seats as it does tend to be packed. They have many single/ double seating options and clean bathrooms! The drinks were very tasty! Wish it had more of a biacoff flavor & the cookie crumble was a nice topping. I stopped by Phinology in the middle of a weekday, and it was already quite busy. There was a mix of people working on their laptops, and others catching up over drinks. I ordered at the kiosk, and my drinks were ready within five minutes. I ordered the: -Matcha einspanner: The matcha flavor was well-balanced, and I really enjoyed the whipped cream on top. -Strawberry matcha latte: The strawberry paired nicely with the matcha, and wasn't overly sweet. While the drinks were good quality, I was surprised by how small they were, especially since they were $8 each. The person in front of me requested 50% ice, and I noticed his drink was only filled halfway. My friend and I came on Sunday afternoon to check out this new matcha Vietnamese coffee spot next to Yun tea. There was a line out the door when we got there. I ordered the matcha foam coffee and my friend got the einspanner matcha which comes out in a small size. You can choose to have the house coffee or Vietnamese coffee. I got mine with Vietnamese coffee. The drinks didn't come out as quickly but maybe they were very busy. I was hoping that the Vietnamese coffee profile would come out stronger but I didn't quite get that. My friend said the matcha was ok. Overall, it wasn't bad but it also wasn't my favorite. Got the mango matcha and it automatically comes with oat milk ! The matcha flavor was light, drink was creamy, and mango flavor was sweet. I think both the mango and matcha could be stronger tho. I originally came for their matcha drinks but saw that there was a Banana Foam Coffee and had to get it! You can choose either the house or Viet Coffee and I went with the latter for a stronger and sweeter drink. I have a pretty low caffeine tolerance so by the time I finished a third of it, I was wired! I couldn't really mix the foam (it's thick) into the drink so I didn't get that much of a banana flavor but as a Viet Coffee, it's pretty good. I came early to also study a bit and was able to snag a table. There are a lot of tables and outlets along the wall and cushioned seats. By 10AM Saturday, the line was already out of the door but most people left once they got their drinks. I didn't really notice anyone prowling for a table the entire time so I don't think this place is really known to be a study or hangout spot. There's free WiFi but it's limited to two hours to match the complimentary 2 hour parking in the lot. One thing I didn't like about Phinology as a study spot was the lighting. It seemed pretty dim and that's even with the natural light coming through the windows. Will definitely be back to try their matcha drinks. For their grand opening, all of the drinks are 20% off and I'm not sure how long that'll last so hurry! read more

New Vietnamese coffee shop in Convoy! Parking is so bad in this lot, but it is what it is. Phinology took over Chakka, next to Jun. Ironically I just had their matcha though.. maybe it's better to get the Viet coffee. The matcha was ok. I actually tried the matcha latte from Labora (same exact: less ice, no sugar, oat milk), and the one at Labora tasted better. The banana foam here didn't have much of a banana flavor. If you use really ripe bananas, the foam should taste good, but this one just wasn't right. I did get 20% off for their soft opening though. Sorry, Phinology! I'll come back to try your coffee next time. It was too much caffeine for me today. read more
Came in and it was already packed in the afternoon. There is a kiosk to order from. I got the banana coffee and I love the taste of bold viet coffee. I only wish that we were able to make adjustment to the sweet level. Although it looked busy, the drink came out fast. Nice place to hang out or study. It is in a busy complex. read more
