Really, Philz Burlingame? This is the second time we've had the exact same issue. I understand it was a busy Saturday morning, and I do appreciate that the staff apologized and corrected the mistake. Still, it's frustrating when the same error happens more than once. We ordered through the app because the line can take a long time, and ordering ahead should reduce the chance of mistakes. Unfortunately, we were given a cold drink instead of the hot drink we ordered--again. In the end, it took about 45 minutes to get both drinks, including another 30-minute wait after the app had already marked the order as ready while the order was being remade. The staff was polite and apologetic, which I appreciate, but repeated order errors and long correction times make it hard to rely on this location when you're in a hurry. read more

Coffee is good but they do not have the ability to get the food orders ready at the designated time. I used to order their bagels and chocolate croissants regularly but when they say order ready by a specific time, do they mean the coffee only or the entire order? The coffee is always right on time but the food requires several reminders. Today, my order was supposed to be ready at 7am. The coffee was there but the burrito and chocolate croissant were not yet. I checked with the barista at pick up. She had tons of coffee to make. The barista told the cashier who passed by regarding the burrito but the cashier disregarded her and continued grinding beans for the fireman or whatever she was doing. I checked a second time at 7:04am with the barista. The barista went over to put the burritos a minute or two later and when the cashier was done grinding the beans, she went over to take it out of the warmer. The time I left the store was 7:08am. This happened the last 5x we ordered food there. I understand the mornings are busy but people pick up according to the mobile order ready time on the app . Being late once or twice is understandable but consistently late means there is a pattern. I should just stick with the coffee only with no food. I hate to bother the barista multiple times. My summer has been enhanced by their raspberry mint iced tea and their new heartier food offerings ( please bring back the cheddar bacon scone) like the turkey bacon focaccia. Today I indulged in the Peanut Butter Cup iced medium sweet and creamy. When I got to the register to order, the employee came up to me with no positive attitude. She was stuck up and rude which was off-putting since the start, even before looking at me. This was my first time at this location as I was visiting a friend of mine who works there, but having this as a first impression really threw me off. She was not welcoming and was trying to get over with the order without being nice. The employee has glasses on, more on the shorter side, and had lighter hair. This needs to get checked. Anyways, I ordered the tiramisu drink which was really delicious, so props to the employees working very hard while making these very good drinks. What a cool location!!! Upon entering, I felt like I had stepped into a local one-off coffee shop and not a one with multiple locations. For openers, the music was good and the volume at an acceptable level that allowed for having conversation without screaming. I'm sure anyone attempting to work while here appreciates the volume level. Seating consists of the typical coffee shop table/chair setups and additionally, there is comfy sofa perfect for reading. Service was superb! The barista's were super friendly and receptive to small talk. I was greeted immediately upon entering, placed my order and within the typical Philz wait time my freshly brewed cup of coffee was ready. My go to continues to be Philtered Soul...what an amazing blend. Love this Phil'z location! Located just around the corner from Burlingame Ave, this spot is almost always poppin'. For those who haven't been, you order with a person at a counter, then wait for your drink to be made. They don't do fancy lattes or anything here, just classic pour over style coffee. The differences come in the flavor notes in the bean blend(s) you choose. You can also mix more than one blend -- my favorite combo is the Philtered Soul & Tesora! You also get to select your "sweet and creaminess" levels. They have a few milk alternatives, as well as sugar alternatives like honey. SEATING; Inside along the pick-up counter, they only have a couple small tables and a couch that is often used for people to wait for their order. There are a few more tables and some window seating up front by the door and register. Outside, there are three longer tables and chairs to enjoy your coffee and people watch. They are big enough to accommodate groups of 4-6, or a couple smaller groups sharing. COFFEE: They have all the standard options for the Phil'z menu, plus new and seasonal items. They sell bags of coffee grounds and mugs as well, so you can enjoy it at home. You can get most drinks hot or iced, and they even have some fun "Featured Creations" such as the Iced Mint Mojito, Gingersnap, Iced Coffee Rosé, and Cold Brew. They also sell large bottles of their cold brew to take to-go. We've had them in our fridge on several occasions over the years! FOOD: They have a variety of pastries and sweets, along with more hearty options such as burritos and fancy toasts! I've tried many of their food items, and never been disappointed. SERVICE: Everybody I've ever interacted with has been very friendly. The people behind the bar making the coffee work super hard, yet always want to make sure your order is to your liking. The pour over style can take longer than what people are used to, so be patient, especially if it's busy. I walked in to order coffee and no one was at the register. I was acknowledged and was told someone would be with me shortly. However, after another associate came out from the back, the acknowledgment ended there. The associate immediately began making drinks, and no one communicated that customers were waiting to place orders or directed anyone to assist at the register. I waited for a while, expecting someone to come over or at least provide an update, but no one said anything. Once it became apparent that no one was coming to the register to take orders, I left without purchasing anything. I completely understand that coffee shops get busy, and I don't mind waiting. I guess it's my fault for not knowing how Phil's works but I wanted a latte or similar to a latte. I ended up getting my order finished (literally took over 20 mins for the to make two coffees) and one of them was wrong. When I asked the barista to fix the order I was met with annoyance. The all-women staff this Wednesday morning did not disappoint! Our three iced coffees were perfectly made: strong coffee, correct levels of cream and sugar, properly iced. In addition, the warmed cardamom squiggle, which is much like a kouign aman with flakey buttery layers of pastry, but less dense and with cardamom sugar on the outside, was DELICIOUS. I ordered a second one before we left! The #1 thing that ruins a Philz coffee for me is when the chilling process/ice is not done right, and the whole drink is watered down. The Burlingame Philz did not have that problem! I try to avoid chain coffee shop but wanted to try this locals' favorite as so many people raves about it. Unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations. I was disappointed to learn that they didn't offer any espresso drinks, only various types of drip coffee. The atmosphere and decor of the place were not my cup of tea plus parking in downtown Burlingame is a hassle. While the coffee itself was decent, it wasn't anything exceptional that would justify returning. I found myself longing for something more sophisticated and creative, but alas, it was not to be. While it might be a decent option for drip coffee, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for a broader range of coffee options or an elevated coffee experience the lack of espresso options really made the delicious for me. read more

Yet ANOTHER review for Philz? You're damn right. Of all of the Philz outposts that I've been to thus far, this one actually reminds me of their original location (RIP) the most. By comparison, the size of the place is somewhat similar (just a handful of tables inside, though with a parklet out front) and even the overall vibe feels rather familiar. Between the couch facing the baristas and the random artwork on the walls, it has the same sort of homely, coziness to it, but with more modern touches. For that reason alone, this location wins some points. Despite how relatively small this Philz is though, it's surprising that it's never been all that busy the times I've stopped in. Most recently, on a random Friday afternoon, one a couple of their tables were occupied and there was just one person ahead of us ordering at the register. To be fair, about a half dozen folks streamed in almost immediately after us, but still - felt quite nice being able to walk right in and order. Mire significantly, it was nice to be able to get a seat so easily, regardless of the fact that we weren't actually staying or very long. Considering the number of times I've been to Philz over the years, you'd think I've tried a bunch of their drinks...but you'd be mistaken. Rather, every time I come here, it's hard for me to deviate from my usual rotation of favorites - Tesora, Mocha Tesora, Gingersnap, and, of course, their signature Mint Mojito. I've had all but the Gingersnap here and my drinks have always been good - never too sweet nor too creamy. The only thing that's relatively less appealing about this Philz is, ironically enough, its location. Despite how much I absolutely adore Burlingame Ave, snagging a space here isn't always the easiest (fine at times, awful at others). As such, making a quick stop to pick up a drink isn't always feasible, but it's far better than trying to do the same at any of their SF locations. I always order using the app, so the reviews about poor customer service are things I haven't experienced. I just order and pick-up and it hasn't been a problem. My orders are: 1. I stopped by around 6 AM to pick up a mobile order for my coworkers and me. My drinks were already on the counter, so I asked the barista, Nora for a tray and stickers to carry them with the food. She ignored me for a bit, then placed the tray on the opposite side of the bar from where I was standing... When I asked again for the stickers, Nora twice snapped "right there" without explaining, even though they had fallen onto the far side of the counter and then continued to work. I told her I knew she was busy but I didn't appreciate the attitude, Nora snapped that she was sick and was cursing. This is completely unacceptable. Being sick is not an excuse to treat customers rudely--stay home if you can't be professional. I've been a loyal customer for years, but the company's standards seem to be slipping fast if this is the level of service being allowed. Avoid any expectations. Always. It was my first visit to Philz coffee and when I saw their menu, I thought for a long time about what I wanted to try because all the options looked tantalizing. Eventually, I opted for the cold ginger coffee (and yes, I know that spices look better when they are warmed up, but, based on the Philz menu, you are advised to try the cold version, which I did). It turned out that the cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves were floating among the ice cubes and didn't give the drink any of the gingerbread flavor you usually choose this drink for. I was a little frustrated, but was satisfied with a warm Poppy Lemon Slice, which I shared with my boyfriend because he was left negatively impressed with their burrito. That little thing with the paper stuck on it costs 7$, are you kidding? Still my favorite coffee in the Bay Area. I haven't been here since Feb of 2020 and I've missed it. This location is cozy, and the fast and friendly service was as I remembered it. With the rain and my mask, it took me a bit to find where to get in line to place my order (wearing glasses is even more fun these days!), but the young lady at the counter and the man behind me were both patient while I cleaned and dried them so I could see again. My coffee was perfect -- especially since it was cold and starting to rain -- with strong flavor and just-right temperature. Whenever I spend the day working in Burlingame, this is always my first spot to stop for the always delicious Iced Coffee Rose, house way, sweet and creamy! I honestly I'm not the biggest coffee fan, but when it comes to the iced coffee rose, it's the only thing on the menu I order. Normally I drink all my drinks super fast, but something about this drink where I seem to drink it slow and enjoy and the sweet and creamy goodness. Not sure what's in it, but it's the only $6 coffee and don't think twice about ordering. If you are on a time crunch, ordering online for pickup is the most efficient way, but I typically just order in-person because I gotta scope out whether or not there are outdoor seats available. They have 3 long wooden tables and an outdoor parklet area with 4 tables to enjoy your beverage. The wifi is strong enough, even outside, and which makes this location a perfect spot for me for remote work. If inside is more your vibe, masks are required, but they have plenty of small tables available. The staff here is always pleasant to chat with me and they pump out drinks very quick.
