I love Phil and his Ice House. The burgers are really freaking good. I always get the Brentwood and it never disappoints. I'm not sure what else anyone expects from this place. It delivers on a quality burger at a reasonable price and if you have kids, it's got a great outdoor area for them to play. 4 beers on tap and some can beer options as well. Amy's ice cream is in the same building but that's a different review. Overall I have never had a bad experience and even if I did I'm sure they would make it right and since I've had so many great experiences, I would give them grace. Really great spot for burgers and sandwiches! A couple friends took us here for dinner, and we were very happy with our meals! My husband ordered the regular cheese burger without onion and very much enjoyed it. His favorite parts was the bun they used, a sourdough bun. I ordered a grilled cheese, and added bacon (so good) and the grilled cheese comes on sourdough bread as well. It is seriously so good, and adds so much to the sandwich. It added that perfect sourdough taste, but also a little sweet, and also buttery. It was perfect, and I want a loaf of the bread immediately. The mixed fries were delicious! Regular potato fries were crispy and salty, and the sweet potato fries were so flavorful! I'm not typically a fan of sweet potato fries, cause seriously, how do you heat regular potato fries?! But these were awesome and I would absolutely order them again! If you like onion rings DO NOT get them here. They are pretty week. The batter is seriously under seasoned, so bland, and they weren't crispy at all. Very disappointing. The shop has an Amy's ice cream inside, so after dinner you can grab a scoop if you need something sweet! I got sweet cream and peach, and they were both so tasty, and paired so well together! The people at Phil's Ice House were kind enough to send me a gift card after I had a less than stellar experience at a different location and I wish I could say the free price tag made it taste better but it just didn't. First off, I could visually see some flakes of salt on the sweet potato fries but I couldn't taste any at all which is unfortunate and left me not overly happy with the fries. Next I ordered the 78756 burger which comes with a jalapeño cheese bun which I hoped would add a bit of spice to the burger which it did not. The bun was also strangely too big for the Patty (which was turkey not beef) so at the end I had a few bites left of just bun and this was without a doubt the most wet burger I've ever had. The Compote was literally dripping off it and the flavor I noticed the most was the mayo. Like I said in the previous review I'm not a big burger person but I'm sad to report I've definitely had better. I'll come back to try something that's not a burger in the hopes that that's better (and because there's still money on this gift card). Amys ice cream is my favorite ice cream in ATX, so that alone is a huge plus, but attach it to an awesome burger joint and you can't go wrong. The burgers at Phils are named after neighborhoods or zip codes in Austin. I ordered the 78750 burger which is now my new favorite burger. My wife got the Allendale which is a solid burger as well. My wife loves that they have an option for regular fries, sweet potato fries, or a mix fried that come with the burger. To be honest I'm not a fan of sweet potato fries but these weren't bad, probably some of the better ones I've tried. The burgers were hot fresh and delicious. The buns for the burgers were so soft seemed like they were made that day no mass produced buns like you get at the grocery store. The also have a few beers on tap and several can options to choose from as well. One knock on the place was that it was hot inside the building, but to be fair there are a lot of kids going in and out from the playground. Giving me enough time to find a table, fill my soda and get my utensils. The food was a 4/5 experience. It was tasty, but the french fries weren't fresh. Acceptable, but not crispy. The burgers came well done, but still juicy. The buns were not soggy as I saw some reviewers have written in the past. Pretty good burger although I'm not a huge fan of what I think is a potato bun (that's the doughier heavier sweetish bun - some folks really like this). A friend found out about this place a while back and we had to try. Been here 3 times already and I still can't get enough of the 78704 burger!! I'm a burger person and I KNOW when burgers are good or not. This place is up there with some of my favorite burger joints. I haven't tried anything else yet but the burger is really good and unique. Been meaning to try this place, so I did. We really wish we hadn't. Strange (not weird - annoyingly strange) and completely unintelligible dude with stringy hair on the register, had to be asked repeatedly what he was saying. The place was cluttered and dirty with cold uncomfortable chairs. The buffalo chicken sandwich was soggy, hamburgers were all dry and we got a wine pour so ridiculously small I had to ask if it was a mistake. It wasn't, I was bluntly told. Avoid this place. I had issues with the patties being too dry before but this one was spot on. It was moist and flavorful. The bun is perfection. We usually love the burgers at Phil's but today we were incredibly disappointed and we will never be back. First, we waited for an entire hour for our order (they were not even busy) only for them to give our order away to someone else. When the other people returned their order, (I saw with my own eyes them going through their burger with their hands when they realized it was wrong), they grabbed it from them, put it on different paper and handed us the SAME burger the people had returned and had gone though with their hands. I was so disgusted and appalled that they thought this was ok. Needless to say, we called them out on this and received a full refund. We definitely will not be back. At first, it may look like your average hamburger fast food place with seats and beer, but this place really knows what a good hamburger is! The burger itself looks visually appealing, from the 78750 Burger to the Phil-A-Buster (my favorites), these burgers will make you rethink about other fast food places! The 78750 burger has nice and delicious onion rings that accompany the burger so well, along with our favorite burger topping, bacon! What comes out of the kitchen and the service, while not bad person se, is noticeably worse than the north Austin location. 2. I don't know if it's the laker on the tables or just lackluster side work, but every table in this place is hilariously sticky. Every table. Every day. 5 stars for the fact that this is a place where a family / parent & kid can come, mom / dad can have an unhindered and unjudged adult beverage, the kids can have a sammich and ice cream and play on a pretty sweet little play ground, you can get the classic Amy's cow picture in the corner, then walk over the Half Price Books to pick up some self help "Mommy Who Drinks" material. I have to give 2 stars to the fact that for some reason an overwhelming number of parents in this world think that a playground is a babysitter and they don't need to watch or communicate with their little rapscallion at all once he's terrorizing the village. Thank God my child is perfect, right? But seriously, moms... let's watch our kids and for those of you with little ones under three, they don't belong on elevated surfaces at all unless you want me to A.) Yelp judge you B.) judge you to your face or C.) physically remove your child from their death perch and hand them to you in front of everyone, hopefully presenting enough public shame that you start to pay closer attention. ** The management has assured me that they will be looking into this to clean it** I came here hoping to love it, knowing that Amy's ice cream is a pretty solid brand, and they have fulfilled parents needs for brews, burgers, playgrounds and dessert. I'll admit, there are families everywhere, but for me, this place is really not managed well. I tried to sit outside at the plastic coated picnic tables, and there is black layers of dirt in the open holes on the table. Like inches thick. A power washing during closed hours could remedy this. Bees swarmed the area due to the food that had not been properly disposed of, and I had to move indoors to prevent being stung. Once indoors, I was fighting gnats and flies the entire time. Food caked on the floor, ketchup on bottles that had not been cleaned in a while and when we finally got our food, I was almost afraid to give my kid her hot dog, because it was a funny color. My order was wrong and my bun to my burger was rock hard in some places. They cater to families, but in the very least I'm afraid to see what the kitchen would be like, as this place just is not clean at all. I think Amy would be embarrassed. read more

After leaving my initial review, the manager at Phil's Ice House contacted me to apologize for my experience and offer us a gift certificate so we could give them another shot. That's great customer service and I really appreciated it. My husband and I went back on a Saturday evening. The place was busy! There was a line but the wait was short and we were able to place our order within 10 minutes. I'm now pregnant so I made sure to order my burger well done. We waited about 15 minutes for our food, which was reasonable given that the place was packed. My burger was well done as requested, but not dry or burnt at all. Both of us enjoyed our burgers, and the bun was cooked this time, although barely. The buns get very soggy very quickly, and to me they could be cooked some more to avoid the sogginess and give them at least a little color and crust. We both ended up discarding our the bottom half of the bun halfway through the burger because of it. The fries were good but not crispy and a little cold. Its a well run burger place. Nice venue, with outdoor seating in the shade. Also has a nice tree and kids playground on the property. It is a burger place + amy's icecream in the same building. They serve it on a freshly baked bun, which a bit of sweet bun taste to it. I dig the thick fresh buns they serve it on. Burger itself was quite large, will certainly fill you up. Toppings were very fresh. Beef is decent, good bacon, two types of cheese to choose, fresh toppings, and freshly cut fries & really good onion rings. Very tasty Onion rings at that! Went in at 12:30pm on a typical lunch day, no big lines, food came out fast. Service is very friendly.
