Phidippides prides itself on really fitting you with the right shoe. The sales associates spend time with you bringing out a multiple choices, honing it down to the right nominees, and watching your step and running style from behind to see if you pronating or favoring one side (or whatever). You usually end up paying full price. But I've found great value in their approach: It's worth it -- both health wise and monetarily -- to get the right fit and to avoid foot problems or having to buy another shoe before you really needed to. read more

The manager was arguing with some lady when we got there, refusing to refund her the full purchase price on a pair of shoes. She had a receipt. I guess it was a second return and she had used the credit to purchase this pair. The manager said she was not entitled to the $160 but merely the $60 since her other shoes were $100. I advised her to dispute it with her credit card co since the manager was not listening. Some other sales person from the back yelled to me to not get involved. The poor lady was upset and no one was making sense. I returned my shoes and left. I'll buy elsewhere. Poorly run establishment. read more

My friend took me to Phidippides and I had a great experience. The entire staff is friendly and helpful. Kevin who helped me was very patient and showed me I think every shoe they had. He explained the differences and what ones would be good for me. He watched me run to ensure the shoe was a fit for me. I bought two pairs. Post sale comment. After a few tests at home I wasn't happy with one pair and decided to return them. Customer service during the return was great and easy. No hassle at all. I went out in a limb to experiment with a new Saucony runner (I usually wear an Asics Duomax) and after a couple of weeks running in them I realized they were all wrong for me...I need more stability and support. I was apprehensive to ask for an exchange being the Sauconys were quite expensive but the folks here put me at ease and didn't give me a hard time for returning a used pair of runners. My "go to" shoe store. For years these guys have given great advice, always provided options discussing pros and cons of different shoes for the purpose intended. Even with the retail stores closed, Sloan offered great advice by email, and Eric helped immensely with meeting me outside the store to provide options and help fit a new shoe including new inserts. Phidippides is one of the best places to find running/walking shoes. The day of my first run/walk for the year I went to Phidippides, Atlanta to find the right shoe. I had to because the ones I was working with was last years old news. I'm so glad that when I got there they weren't that busy. (It was around 1 in the afternoon). Gregory assisted me and let me tell you, he is one of the best! Very, very knowledgeable in his craft. He worked with me to find the shoe that would work for my feet. I had to have tried on at least 6 pairs. That's because it takes time to find the right shoe and if you're going to make this kind of investment it's worth taking your time. In finding the right shoe they have you run up and down the aisle in the store so they can check out your form. They are looking at the way your feet hit the ground, the way you leave the ground, if your feet tend to turn inward or out, if you have enough support. In my case, my right foot tends to waiver inward and my insteps are rather flat. (I think that has something to do with being barefoot and pregnant for so many years lol). Gregory was patient and didn't stop looking until I was completely satisfied. Thanks for all of your help. The day of my race I felt like I was bouncing up and down on a mattress. My feet loved me for the investment and in-turn gave me one of the easiest races I've done. There are currently two locations; one in Atlanta on Piedmont Ave, and the other in Sandy Springs on Sandy Springs Circle. After a 5K race at Piedmont Park, I had a 15% off coupon to spend and some new marathon running shoes to buy. Still on my post-race high, I was eager to find some shoes that would help with my extreme pronating issue, as well as keep my grandma knees and ankles supported while running longer distances. After many many tries and runs back and forth toward the store entrance, I finally settled on two pairs - a pair of super comfy Nikes and a pair of super supportive New Balances. While both shoes offered better support than my current cheap Nike running shoes, I thought maybe the New Balances would offer better stability and less pain while running. The girl helping me and my running buddy was very helpful, although I'm not sure I made the right decision with these. She said I could bring them back if they're not feeling right. I guess I should have taken her up on that offer, but honestly I have no idea how I should be feeling since I'm not typically a regular runner. It's been almost two months now wearing these shoes while running, and while some of the running pains I get are gone, they're not all gone. My boot camp instructor commented that they looked very stiff and bulky for running shoes. Even my evening run today was rough (and it's not just how out of shape I got from a month off from disciplined training). I've been to a couple other running stores (not to purchase or try on shoes) and noticed their method seems a bit more methodical - there's either a treadmill or indoor "track" to run on when trying on your shoes. I would have loved to see the difference in my form from an outsiders perspective, since I have no idea what the difference was between my pronated gait and after buying the new shoes. She did help me choose which shoes to purchase, though and gave me her opinions, and was overall very helpful. Just wish these shoes resulted in a better run for me. I may come back to Phidippides one more time to see if I can get these shoes switched out this late in the game. After nearly 6 weeks of pretty intense boot camp, I realized I needed new shoes. No, that's a lie. Over a year ago, during some intense personal training sessions, I realized I needed new shoes. But every time I had some money to spend on new shoes, I ended up with some gorgeous heeled non-laced varietal rather than the shoes I actually needed. Finally, after the pain in my legs became nearly intolerable and I spent all of morning boot camp slipping due the dew on the track, I knew I needed to make a stop at Phidippides. I had done a bit of research online in comparison to the last shoes I had (and loved) but I really didn't know what I was doing. Phidippides is open late on Thursday nights, which perfectly coincided with the night that I decided it was time for a sneaker investment. I made my way to Ansley Mall, waded through the insanely buff folks heading to LA Fitness or the running club that meets at Phidippides, and as I made my way back to the shoe wall I was quickly greeted. I gave a quick explanation of what I was looking for, as I knew the brands that had fit me in the past, and I knew I didn't want to spend any more than $100. The very nice salesman (I wish I could remember his name) had me start with their core shoes and then he evaluated what I needed from there. While I felt a little silly running back and forth along the store, I will admit that it was the only way I could really get a feel for each shoe. All in all I tried on about 6 options, finally deciding on a pair of Nikes that ended up at $85. I appreciated that he didn't show me any shoes beyond my budget and that he let me make my own evaluations in terms of fit and feel. Furthermore, he advised me to hit the treadmill in my new kicks just to make sure they felt okay long-distance, and that I was welcome to bring them back if the soles weren't scuffed up. You can tell these guys (and girls) really want to get you in the right shoe for you. As a shoe-lover, I can appreciate that. A lot. read more

Some relationships are measured in meals. I've had some that started over dinner, blossomed over breakfast and were pretty much done by lunch. I measure my Phidippides relationship in miles. At last count I estimate that I'm about 8000 miles into this relationship and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon. I seriously love this place and the staff. A couple of times a year, M and I show up and spend a few hours trying on every single neutral running shoe they have multiple times. Not a single time has anyone tried to hurry us along, make unsolicited suggestions or given us a dirty look. If car dealerships were even remotely like this, I might buy a new car every year (don't listen to what people say, I actually don't). These people know what they are talking about and as far as I know are not motivated to sell one brand over another. Over the past 7 years I've gone from Saucony to Mizuno to Brooks and will probably be switching again in the near future. Being helped by experienced, active runners who comprise most of the staff helps immensely when you want to have an intelligent conversation about the various aspects of the shoe(s) you are trying on. They are also great if you want to get a professional perspective on the latest running fad. They also have a decent selection of running gear including a clearance rack in the back. Bonus points are awarded for the various Phidippides branded running gear priced very competitively compared to the usual brands. Trust me when I tell you to get the ones with the name written in Greek. It's an awesome ice-breaker and guaranteed to get you many, many dates with opposite the (or same) sex. This happens to me all the time when I'm in my last mile of a long run and starting to hallucinate about Pizza and/or sex. If you're into group running and training, they also offer various activities you can partake in. So, next time you need running/walking shoes, run/walk to Phiddipides and tell them I sent you. Once they've gone 'who?, we don't know him' you can get down to the business of getting the best customer service in any running store in Atlanta. read more

I finally came to the realization that if I was going to be serious about working out more, I'd have to abandon my crappy shoes from Dick's for a better quality pair that actually fit. Read a couple of reviews and decided Phidippides was the place to go. Stopped by one Saturday afternoon and was greeted promptly. A few minutes later, I was trotting back and forth across the store feeling like a complete idiot. But if that's what it takes to avoid ridiculous pains in my feet and shins, so be it. After trying on somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 to 10 different pairs, I decided on a pair of Asics Gel-Kayanos that, I swear, were the absolute ugliest pair of shoes that I've ever laid eyes on. It was really hard to separate the repulsion that I felt towards the design and color scheme from how good they felt on my feet. After dealing with an internal struggle regarding whether or not I should lie about which pair felt best, I asked if they had the Asics in any other colors. Nope. Not at this store. But maybe, just maybe, our other store does. *silent prayer while guy is on the phone* Fortunately for my pride and sanity, the other Phidippides location had the same shoe style available in purple. Let's face it, that's not any better. But I have a serious aversion to neon teal, so anything else would have made me happy. Now I am the proud owner of a pair of grey, purple, and lime green running shoes and my tootsies have never felt better. Honestly, the prices here can be a bit inflated, but the service that these guys provide has proved to be invaluable for me. I'll definitely be coming back when it's time for a new pair of shoes, while secretly hoping that Asics has fired whoever chooses the color schemes for their shoes. read more

I have been running/seeing a personal trainer for a couple years before I found out about Phidippides. After buying Adidas, Nike, and every other brand of shoe and them failing to meet my workout needs I did some research and found this place. Now, I can't stop talking about them! I have never paid $100.00 for a pair of workout shoes and now see that I should have been from the beginning. For me, $100.00 was a hard pill to swallow at first, but after the first couple workouts I was more than happy with my purchase. My first time in I was taken aback. I was measured for shoe size, they had me do a small run in store in the shoes to make sure they fit my running style THEN had me try on a couple different pair they thought might fit. Amazing! On my second time in I brought the shoes back with me thinking I would just get them and go. Nope, no way. They checked out my old shoe to see where they were worn out most in, had me do another run in the old shoes and new shoes. I actually ended up with a different shoe! Amazing! What I thought was perfect they realized they needed to tweak what they thought was perfect. This new shoe is even better- how is that possible?! By far, the best shopping experience I have had in a while! I have been running for close to two years and decided it was time to get some good running shoes. I know the store because I usually go to their Thursday's runs (which I always enjoy) and once in a while I buy an appliance I need but never before been here for running shoes. The staff here is always supper friendly and help you find what you need. The guy that helped me that day made me run in the store so that he could see my style of running and the kind of shoes that might be right for me. Even though I feel in love with the first pair I tried, he had no problem bringing me more options to make sure I had the right one, It even gave me the impression I could have tried the whole store and he wouldn't even have flinch and kept his smile all day long!. This review is regarding the training program Phiddipides put together for the Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon this past spring. I had signed up for the Georgia Half last winter and when I got an email saying that Phiddipides was sponsoring a training program to get runners ready, I was excited. The cost to participate in the training program was $59 and it promised 12 weeks of supported long runs, experienced coaches, post-run food, an official training shirt, and a written training plan. I had experienced great success before with the training programs offered by the Atlanta Track Club, and the only requirements for the half marathon training program was to be able to run three miles, so this sounded like exactly what I needed to stay on track. The program started in December and for the first training run we had a huge group-- probably around 50-60 runners. It was very chaotic due to the large amount of people, plus there was another training program offered by Jeff Galloway that was also meeting. After brief introductions, we split up into groups to go for our run and this is where I started to become irritated. With such a large group of runners there were only five or six coaches available, and once divided up into groups by pace, anyone running more than 10:00m/mi was left to run on their own. I went to the training program the first four Saturdays, and I never had the opportunity to interact with any of the coaches and started to wonder why the heck I was waking up early on a Saturday morning for basically nothing. I would not recommend this program for beginners, slower runners, or even more experienced runners who need or want a little more support. This is not a training program that is encompassing of runners of all ability levels and I would recommend that Phidippides state that somewhere in their advertising for this program or during the first meeting. In the meantime, I will stick to the training programs offered by the Atlanta Track Club to keep me on track. read more

I recently got back into running and wanted to get correctly fitted for some new kicks so I went to Phidippides. I was there on a Saturday around noon. It was not too crowded (I was expecting worse) and I was helped right away. The store was bright, uncluttered, and had a good selection of running gear. The sales associate, Kate, was extremely helpful and nice. She had me run to the end of the store and back in some neutral shoes so she could get a good idea of my stride, foot landing, and all of that jazz. She then brought out 4 or 5 pairs of shoes that would suit my mechanics and continued to watch as I ran in them just to make sure they were right for my style. In case you're interested, I ended up getting the Brooks Launch. I did not feel rushed or intimidated during my experience here. A lot of people think that if you go this type of running shoe store where they fit you that you end up paying more $ for the shoe. Well, for me in this case, that was not true. The first thing I did when I got home was Google shopped my shoe and it was the same price at online retailers as it was at Phidippides. Thumbs up for their prices. read more

Cool, professional people whose primary qualification seems to be a deep knowledge of, and appreciation for, running. Service is the killer app here. This is not a normal department store shoe shopping experience. It is an individualized consultation on your running form and the best shoes to help you run better. They first have you run and watch your feet. Then they pick shoes appropriate to the way your feet work, have you try them on, and keep watching you run in them. This goes on until you find the perfect shoes for you. Icing on the cake is that the prices are good, and they offer a military discount for those of you in the service. I had a fine experience here. The salesman talked to me for a while and examined the shoes I brought in that I had previously been wearing. The new shoes are killing my toes, but maybe that's because I should have been more picky when I tried them on. One note: if you go here, go in running clothes! Kevin helped me find some shoes last night, and after traffic I got there around 6:30 and they close at 7. Never once did I feel rushed and he was really thorough when it came to explaining the shoes and how I run. He told me about some events they host that could help connect me to the running community in Atlanta since I am new to running and Atlanta. I haven't taken my shoes for a spin yet but I know that I will love them. I am looking forward to more chances to go in there and gain knowledge from the staff and probably spend too much money on this new hobby. Side note - I know they don't have all the technology that other stores have, but the people working here know running, and are runners. You can tell. So they know what to look for. Also, at the end of the day, you know your feet best and you know whats going to be comfortable for you. I have always had really light weight running shoes, and Kevin knew putting me in a bulky shoe was just not going to work. Technology would have told him that I probably needed one. So I think being able to rely on the knowledge of a person instead of technology is best. read more

I'm a beginning runner, and every article on the internet said that I should invest in good running shoes that match my gait. I'm always a little skeptical about buying fancy sports equipment-- I've always believed that effort is more important than brand name clothes. But I decided to give the magazines the benefit of the doubt, and I went to the nearest speciality runner's store with a good reputation-- this one. My experience was pretty awesome. I was never hurried or pressured to buy anything I didn't want. I was offered previous year models to save some cash. In the end I walked out with some shoes that felt amazing, along with some socks and accessories to go with. The difference between my old and new shoes was night and day. This store's employees know their stuff. I went on a run right after getting back from the store, and my feet felt amazing. The employees at most of the general sports stores (Dick's, Foot Locker) have never matched me up with a good shoe before. I know where I'm going next time I need running gear. I recommended this place based on my experience. Four others came in after me and confirmed the glory of this store. I was never much of a runner (see review of Mezona Orthopaedic) but came in here wanting a running shoe to work out in. At the time I was running lightly. I don't know nuthin' bout no running shoes. Happened upon here due to proximity to Publix. Met up with one of the staff who listened to what I was looking for and picked out some shoes for me to try. Put them and she watched me walk and run in their store. Made some good suggestions and I walked away happy. read more

I am not much of a runner, but I like to go for a jog whenever I'm feeling a bit saggy and I have had my old running shoes since 2008. Definitely high time for a new pair. After searching online for shoes, I was just overwhelmed and even though I thought I knew whether I was an overpronator, underpronator, or a neutral runner, I couldn't be entirely sure. So I found Phidippides online and went into the store the next day. The store was not easy to find, although I had never shopped at Ansley Mall before. The store is located a couple storefronts down from LA Fitness on the right, if you are facing the gym. Anyways, the sales associate was really helpful. He watched me run and checked the sizing of the shoes. If you forgot socks, the store provides a bin of clean socks to try on with the shoes...just make sure to choose a sock that approximates the thickness of your regular running socks. After watching me run, the sales associate brought out 4 pairs of shoes for me to try on. They were all $90-$120 in price range, so I assume most of their shoes run in that range since he didn't ask me about what price I wanted. They do have some sales merchandise though, as I overheard another customer saying she was stockpiling the store's Nike Free stock since they were on sale. So far so good with the shoes and I couldn't be happier with my experience at the store. What puts this place above and beyond though is that the sales associate who rang me up was very friendly and after I inquired about a student discount, he offered a 10% discount even though the store doesn't offer a regular student discount. This made the shoes cheaper than they would be if I had purchased them online. Nice! read more

I spent an evening at Phidippides for the Back on My Feet volunteer orientation (backonmyfeet.org). It's in Ansley Mall, an outdoor mall type of place. You can't see the store from the parking lot-- it's behind Moe's and next to LA Fitness. I would've ended up wandering around if someone hadn't told me about this! Most of the volunteers were there because of the Phidippides newsletter, so the shop must do a good job connecting with its customers! And even though it was nearing closing time, the shop was busy busy with runners in all shapes and forms. There were also 2-3 groups that seemed like they were starting/ending a run. So I left with the impression that Phidippides is more than a place to pick up a new pair of shoes. They are solid on the goods department too-- they have a huge selection of running shoes stacked up to the tall ceilings. I'll definitely come back here with my marathon-loving parents to get a closer look at their stuff and offers! Happy running :) read more

The best shoe shopping experience I've ever had. That may sound like hyperbole, but I've never been to a place where they tried to find what was right for me rather than me groping at a vague idea for what I was looking for. They not only took my vague idea--a shoe for walking and aerobics--but also studied my gait, which no shoe salesmen has ever done before. Then they brought out an array of different shoes for me to try on and let me trust their expertise. Furthermore, they weren't trying to force a more expensive shoe on me. All the shoes, as best as I could see, cost around the same price and it's a fair price for a quality shoe ($100-$130). Finally, their return policy was fair where I had the option of trying out the shoe and as long as it was ruined ("like stepping in a mud puddle," the friendly and knowledgeable salesmen told me), you can return it. As long as I'm in Atlanta, I don't think I'll ever shop anywhere else again for sneakers. read more

Always very helpful, not matter how many times you need to try on shoes. Clean socks if needed, and they really take the time to evaluate your stride and foot work. Staff is extremely nice and welcoming, even for a not so avid runner like myself. I like to walk in with an open mind - don't judge the shoes on the color, brand, or what you want, but instead, let them do the picking for you. They absolutely will not put you in a pair of shoes that don't work just because they will make the most money. I'm not sure that I've ever paid such a low price for running shoes before Phidippides, as I used to just buy shoes based on looks. You'll run around the store, jump up and down, have your feet examined and your stride analyzed -and you'll walk out the door with the right equipment. They'll even let you test your new kicks out on the treadmill and if they're not exactly what you're looking for, you can bring them back and try another pair (I've done this). My sweet girlfriend recommended this place to me, so I decided to give it a try. I wasn't disappointed. The man they call "The Shoe Whisperer" had me try some shoes on and run back and forth in the store, so he could see my type of stride. I expected to be sold on some $200 pair of shoes, but I wasn't. I ended up getting a really great pair of shoes for just under $100. Although the shoes cost more than what I would normally pay, I think that's a small price to pay to keep my knees healthy.
