This place has really tanked. Years ago we could bring in pets when our vet was closed (after hours or weekends). Of course, PETS charged 2 or 3 times what our vet would have charged, but things got done in a timely manner. Not anymore! We've had 2 or 3 experiences (or lack of same) over the last year or so where we were put on a waiting list (we're talking hours) and given one excuse after another. PETS appears to be woefully understaffed, which is hard to believe given their prices. This past Sunday, after being given the runaround for several hours, we left. We called our vet the next day and she made arrangements for our cat to be treated at Pets Emergency in San Rafael. Difference between night and day! read more

My granddaughter's guinea pig got sick yesterday and so I had to utilize the emergency services of Pets Referral Center as my granddaughter was out of town. I am so impressed with their services. From the intake staff at the front desk, to the technicians, to the veterinarians. They were just lovely. Everybody was pleasant and professional. This is a busy place yet nobody presented as rushed or overworked. The exotic pet veterinarian- I believe her name was Dr. Gleeson took time to explain and offer options. Took my frenchie in the other night because I thought she ingested poison and was dying. I walked in and they took my dog right away. One of the assistants had assured me and that she wasn't dying that it was something else. Extremely embarrassing. My baby was cared for and was perfectly fine, the doctor explained everything to me and was kind. I felt like a moron but I will be back if my dogs need anything else. Last week, I had to rush my cat Boo-Boo here & he crossed the rainbow bridge. Everyone from the front desk, the doctor, vet tech, even the guy I talked to on the phone before I decided to bring him there was extremely nice & very helpful. I was by myself & crying but I didn't feel alone. I know it gets busy when there are a lot of pet parents bringing in their pets. (I've once took Boo-Boo in the past & I had to wait 4hours.) But luckily, that day, there was only one person waiting before me, so they took me in right away. So Boo-Boo didn't have to wait long at all. I was very happy about that. What surprised me the most was that a few days after the visit, I received a phone call from them that Boo-Boo's pawprint had come back & I could pick it up any time. I was surprised because I didn't opt to receive it. (Many vets charge extra for the service) They said that the service was all included in the cremation fee. How sweet is that!? Not only that, when I told them that I wasn't going to be able to pick it up any time soon and asked to mail it to me, they shipped it over night so I got the pawprint the very next day! What a great practice to be so considerate of their patients & their parents! And most of all, the price I actually paid (for euthanasia + communal cremation) was way lower than the amount elsewhere! read more

This is an incredible spot with amazing service. Vet demand is higher than ever with pandemic dogs/cats soaring higher than ever, so my regular vet couldn't see my dog for a little wound/irritation on his paw. Was able to get here around 9:45 on a Wednesday and because it was minor they saw him about an hour later and checked on his paw and assured me it wasn't foxtail or anything serious, showed great warmth and care for his well-being, I never felt rushed with questions of my own..and amazingly I wasn't even charged for the visit even though they did a thorough exam and even cleaned up his paw a bit. I have always had good experiences with the veterinarians. They are kind, good listeners and respectful to the clients. Front desk staff have changed. I was treated with disrespect as I asked questions about my payment costs. The person even made snide remarks towards me as I tried to scan my debit card and it didn't work. Rude Service AND Price Gouging On a recent Tuesday morning around 9:30 I brought my 13-year-old labrador to PETS to get her treated for an ear infection I had just discovered. I had planned to leave town on a much-needed vacation that morning, after an emergency at my job had already postponed my trip once, so I had my fingers crossed that it wouldn't take hours to get my dog treated. I filled out the paperwork and waited with my dog in the busy waiting room. I asked what the wait was and was told that animals in more serious condition would take priority. OK, can't really argue with that. After forty-five minutes, what seemed like a lot of animals had been ushered to the back. I could feel my vacation draining away... I went up to the counter and begged one of the receptionists, Please, can you please take my dog soon? She looked at me as if I had two heads and repeated: Dogs were seen in order of their condition. Like, obviously your stupid dog doesn't qualify, who do you think you are? Clearly, she didn't know who I thought I was to be even asking. So there I was, trapped in the waiting room for an unknown amount of time... Natalie, here's my message for you and your boss: Of course an emergency room is going to triage pets. But if you work in a place like an emergency room, you ought to be able to deal graciously with people who are frustrated waiting, who have plans and obligations that are being interrupted by their emergency room visit, and who are worried about their beloved pets. Like, you could make them feel a teensy bit better by saying, I'm sorry for the wait, we'll see your dog as soon as we can. And look sympathetic, not contemptuous. It wouldn't cost you anything. About an hour after I arrived, it was my dog's turn. How long will it take? I asked. About an hour, I was told. This truly seemed excessive--it does not take an hour for a vet to examine a dog--but I was hostage. I said I would go around the corner for some coffee. I came back after about 30 minutes, and soon afterward a tech brought my dog out to the waiting room. She explained the medication instructions and sent me to the desk to pay. No hello or "your dog was a good dog" from anyone after these strangers had had possession of my dog for half an hour. I wonder if she had access to water (it was a hot day), how long she was left alone, or if anyone even gave her a treat. Probably not. I get better treatment when I take my car to the mechanic. Oh, and the bill? $500. For something that would not have cost more than $200 including medication at my regular vet. The paperwork didn't even have the name of a veterinarian on it. And the whole ordeal took almost two hours. I had been to PETS before, and felt good about how they treated my dog (and me). But next time my dog needs emergency care, I'm going elsewhere. read more

This is still the best pet ER around. Since my original review three years ago, we've been back a few times for foxtails, digestive issues and even a 2am case of kennel cough. Their team is phenomenal. They really know their stuff and don't over recommend treatments or procedures. If I have follow-up concerns, the vet has been happy to hop on the phone with me. I honestly like these guys even more than my regular vet, and I recommend them to everyone I know. Yes, you may be waiting a while... but that usually just means your pet isn't having a life threatening emergency, which is a good thing. When possible, they send you home or out to your car / a coffee shop with instructions to come back when they call. Completely worthwhile and reasonable. read more

The wait time is outrageous. I was reassured the wait would not be more than 2 hours after the receptionist heard that the wait was very long for Berkeley dog and can. 2.5 hours in we are still sitting here with four pets ahead of us. Apparently they have three doctors on staff so I really have no idea how this is taking so long. Only one urgent needs pet has come in since I got here. Don't trust their estimate for wait time and if your pet is anything short of dying, stay home or go elsewhere. read more

Communication here is so poor that I honestly don't know if they did a great job or a terrible job. My advice, if you need to go here: Prescriptions: Make sure you get the right amount. They gave me half the needed antibiotics so I had to make an extra trip. On the other hand, pain pills can be given 2 or 3 times daily as needed, but they gave me enough for 3 times. I would rather have come back if I'd needed more because they're expensive. Follow-up appointments: Try to make these well in advance because they usually don't return calls until you call a second time. Test results: Ask when to expect these back because it's often far later than is useful. Keep calling them daily after the expected date because they won't call you when the results come in. They wait for you to call them. Prognosis: It's very hard to talk to a vet here. I wasn't told there was about a 30% chance my dog would need a 2nd surgery. (Which, after they performed, sounded like he hadn't needed after all.) --------- Details: You usually don't get to talk to the vet directly, and the one time I asked I was told, "You can have *five* minutes." That would be understandable if they were dealing with emergencies, but this was for a scheduled appointment and also after I offered to have the vet call at his convenience. A few times I've called and left a message to set up a follow-up appointment or refill a prescription and no one has called back. Conversely, one time I called and had 3 different people call me back about the same thing -- none of them had talked to each other or made a note in the file. (I mean, it would be nice if they pro-actively set up the follow-up appointments they know need to happen, but...) They've both underfilled and overfilled prescriptions. My dog had pain pills that could be given 2 or 3 times a day, so I ended up having a lot left over. They did a 2nd surgery and prescribed him the same pain pills without asking me if I had any left, so I ended up spending a ton of money on pills I didn't need. On the other hand, they've underfilled antibiotics so I've needed to make an extra trip to get more. My biggest issue is that, because of all the mix-ups and lack of communication, I don't know if my dog ended up having unnecessary surgery or ended up skipping necessary antibiotics or anti-inflammatories. He had a broken leg, they put in a metal plate, and 6 weeks later said his bone had healed but now he had an infection. (As an aside, I don't feel like they really explained that there was a huge possibility that this would happen. I think it happens in about 1/3 of dogs who get metal plates.) They said they would probably need to remove the metal plate, but prescribed 4 weeks of antibiotics first (that they made me come in twice to get.) When I came in, I asked if I should wait to see if he really needed the surgery. They were like, "Oh, yeah, I guess." It felt like they forgot that they had ever told me he might not need it. I waited a short time - maybe 20 mins? - when they told me he did need the surgery. No one explained what their criteria was. Maybe he did or maybe he didn't need it, but honestly, it seemed like they had already made up their minds. I don't know if they even had time to do any diagnostics. They gave me antibiotics for a week but told me he'd need them for 2 weeks. They said they sent a culture to a lab to make sure they were prescribing the right kind, and they'd let me know. They never called me back. So I called on a Thursday morning (his antibiotics would run out on Friday.) No one called back, so I called again Friday morning. My vet wasn't there and they said another vet would call me back later. I explained that the antibiotics were going to run out and I needed to get more that day. I asked if he could call back within 2 hours. They couldn't guarantee that. He called back about 5 hours later. He said there was no infection. I asked, "Why did he need surgery then?" He didn't know. He thought maybe it was due to inflammation. (They hadn't prescribed any anti-inflammatories during the month before surgery.) He said he'd have my vet call on Monday. Today my vet called and gave some reasons for the surgery that may or may not be true. He has to say something, right? He can't say, "We made a mistake and your dog didn't need surgery." I told him that frankly, all of this should've been communicated before the surgery. If it had, I would've believed him. But at this point, I have no way of knowing what to believe. When I told him that their office needs to improve communication, he said, "I disagree." I told him this isn't really something he can disagree about -- these are facts: people don't call back, or too many people call back, or prescriptions are over/underfilled, the vet doesn't explain things in advance, etc. Basically, all the examples above. He started laughing. I'm going to look for other emergency vets in case I ever need one again. read more

Although the workers here are friendly & care very much for the animals, they are highly understaffed. When I dropped off my cat who was limping and bleeding, they told me they had a lot of patients and therefore they might have her in the waiting room for 2-3 hours. But instead, she spent nine hours there total before receiving care. She was dropped off at the PETS Referral Center at 10:30 am and I barely got to pick her up at 8:30 pm. Most of that time she spent in the waiting room without being seen, and I was unable to accompany her due to COVID measures. If I had known they were so understaffed that they were going to leave her there for so many hours waiting, I absolutely would have taken her elsewhere. They also accidentally charged me three times for the X-ray. I am lucky that I asked for an itemized invoice, or else I would not have detected the error and would have just thought they are wildly expensive and been overcharged. Thankfully, because I called and asked for the itemized invoice, I was able to get a refund for the extra charges. read more

My dog Leo had a freak accident at a dog park and basically skinned himself between his shoulder blades on a tree. It was a *significant* Injury, He went to one emergency pet hospital for initial surgery, and when he was spiral-diving, they referred us to PET Referral Ctr, where Leo had the good fortune of to be under the care of Dr. Issacson. He underwent his second surgery which involved debriding, adding a drain, more stitches, etc. Dr Issacson was so skilled and caring throughout the whole health crisis, that I had to say a big thank you. Into my fourth hour here and I was second person here. I have seen people walk in with their pets and gets seen right away. When I asked I got told they triage and see based on what they assume is wrong. Someone brought a dog in here that was in its crate and giving birth. Also, they don't TELL you when a pet has come in that they deem more important. Dogs give birth on their own all the time! I'm thinking of leaving after reading how costly this place is. My puppy who is a 9 week old bully accidentally ingested tobacco and marijuana and had to be kept because of high blood pressure and fast heart rate he was really out of it. We were referred here last night after our dog had a likely intestinal blockage (foreign object), had been vomiting and hadn't eaten or had any water for the past 48 hours. Our vet, which had emergency services of its own, thought it would be better to come here because the situation was an emergency, we'd need surgery (they didn't have a surgeon available last night), and this place said, after our vet called, that they would be able to see her quickly. We arrived at 6:00 on a Saturday evening and were told the wait would be two to three hours. They took our dog's vital signs when we arrived and then, I assume, we were put at the bottom of the priority list. I say this because SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS LATER, at 1:30 in the morning, we were still waiting and watching almost every single other person come in, get treated, and leave. At around midnight or 12:30 the receptionist left without checking in about our cases or updating any of us waiting to be seen and we were alone in the waiting room and told "not to let anybody in." Nobody ever came out to update us on wait times or check on our animals. I asked at one point for water for our dog because she was severely dehydrated and seemed unable or unwilling to stand (she's usually a wacky and exhuberant young lab) for the entire time we were there and they never followed up with me to tell me what I assume was "no." At another point I asked for her to be re-triaged due to her extreme lethargy seeming to be worse and it took almost an hour for them to come out and check on her. Finally, at 1:30 a.m., a person came out and told us that they were now closed to new patients and we were looking at "extended wait times" of between 4-5 more hours. When I said we had already been there for 7.5 hours we basically got a shrug. It was crazy. I know it is a busy place and that critical care animals get priority, but the communication was non-existent. I find it hard to believe that they couldn't have communicated their inability to see us much earlier in the evening once they saw saw how the evening was going. They did offer to call other emergency vets but at 1:30 in the morning the only vets available were all at least 45 minutes away and we would have had to get at the bottom of their queues. We called our original vet, who had us come back. At 4 am our dog was promptly hospitalized ("she's very sick," the vet said) and is currently in surgery--they called in an emergency surgeon. We are hoping for the best. I am profoundly disappointed in the service provided by this hospital and hope to never return. Their communication and customer service is severely lacking. read more

I hate this place. Mainly because once you bring your cat here there's no chance they will live. I brought my senior cat here 2 years ago and she didn't make it. Recently I brought my 18 mon old kitten and spent $2800 for test that arrived a week later too late to help us diagnose what exactly he had. Dr. Jennings never called us back to discuss the test that arrived Monday and never bothered to call us once the remainder of test results came in. It was impossible to get records to share them with our vet, I must have called 10 times in an hour only to be placed on hold when my request was time sensitive. Luckily Dr. Michael (emergency vet) was there Monday night to guide us, but it was too late. The front desk people are mostly awful and don't care to email your records something that should take seconds to forward to the primary vet and owner especially after paying so much money. I am thankful I had enough sense to bring my kitty home instead of leaving him there to be neglected by the staff all weekend. read more

It's scary when your pet is sick and your not sure if they will be okay. My 2 year old Chihuahua was sick. I filled out to form on the website and called, they said to bring him in. It was not cheap, $1400 for all the tests exams and xrays but they take Care Credit and you can pay it off in six months no interest. He had an intentional blockage that they resolved with an enema and medication. He is back to being our happy dog again, totally worth it. read more

We are not happy with the service we received here a few weeks ago. Our dog was bleeding and uncomfortable. We waited for many hours, and upon our turn we felt our dog was not given a proper exam. It was also recommended we do blood work and x-ray ($1600). This did not seem right to us. We instead went to the emergency vets in San Ramon, they immediately found that she had a bad anal gland infection. They treated her and gave her the correct antibiotics, she's now doing well. Such amazing service! From the time I called in, to meeting the vet tech, to seeing Dr. Kane, we just had a really wonderful experience. My pup must have got into something that I didn't see, because she very suddenly started violently vomiting. She seemed to get worse, crying and shaking. I moved to the area a few months ago and had been going to Sage Vet for emergency visits in the South Bay and was apprehensive trying somewhere new here. I called and was given a clear idea of what would happen when we came in. They checked our pup in quickly and I assumed we would have to wait for hours, but a vet tech came to see her right away to check her vitals. We saw the vet, Dr. Kane, within 20 minutes after that. He was honest and said he thought she was fine and could probably go home and wait it out but said it might be best to at least give her some anti nausea meds and some fluids. As our pup is a senior and had a history of liver failure, I requested a the blood test too. We got the results within 30 minutes and were on our way home. The total bill was also less than what I expected. It was such a stress seeing my little one so terribly sick, but they took such good care of her. I hope I don't have to bring her back, but at least my mind will be at ease if I do. read more

Our cat Gus spent four nights at PETS having a tumor removed and recovering from near death. I was totally pleased with the medical care he got but there were a few things that drove me nuts that they could do better on: --one night we get a call from a doc at 2 am telling us that he's not doing well and that they need several thousand more $$ to continue treatment. So, I had to get up then, go online, and e-mail them that, yes, I would pay. --then, when it was time to pick him up, we agreed with the doctor to be there at 10 am. We get there, park in the lot, call, get put on hold, are finally told to come to the front door for pick-up. So, we end up waiting on University Avenue, at the entrance for 40 minutes. Meanwhile, some jerk who works there comes out and tells us not to loiter. Then, to cap it all, they can't find his carrier and have to send him home in a box. So, good medical care, but really crappy at dealing with clients. read more

This is my second time needing an ophthalmologist for a newly adopted dog! This time I saw Dr Zarfoss and she did not disappoint! My JoJo received a thorough exam of her eyes and Dr Zarfoss patiently listened to my questions and concerns and talked me through it all. I was expecting the worse and was pleasantly surprised to learn her eye wasn't as bad as I thought and I don't have to consider surgery to correct or remove at this time. Everyone who helped me was incredibly kind and patient with me and JoJo from the front desk to the Doctors and assistants and I'm grateful for the wonderful care we have received. Both of my experiences with ophthalmology with Dr Knight and Dr Zarfoss have exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend them both if you have concerns for your pets eyes! read more

Our family was deeply grateful to Dr. Nate Kane and the team at PETS this week when our beloved 15 1/2 year old, already not well, dog had a crisis and needed to be seen in an acute emergency. We found the staff super kind and caring, and Dr. Kane extremely sensitive, knowledgeable, and able to deal with the complexity of the hard decisions we needed to make in a way that truly lessened the trauma for us. I brought my recently cancer diagnosed cat to the Oncology Annex. I will call out Erin for her care an empathy of my Cooper. However, the hospital itself seemed to consistently disappoint me. When Cooper was in his last days, I came by to pick up pains med and fluids. I was stressed and sad, and the receptionist could not find the pain meds. I had ordered them the day before and had ensured that Erin brought them to the ER. I got a condescending run around, as they told me his meds were restricted. After 25 minutes, they found the meds Christina was very kind and apologetic, which I appreciated. But today, I received a sympathy card from PETS re: Cooper's passing that urged me to write this review. The icing on the cake? The card was absolutely empty inside. Unfortunately, I had a pet emergency last night for my cat and had to go here last night and got excellent care for my distressed animal. They were able to stabilize him and diagnose the problem very quickly. They took him in fast and got right to work. They have covid measures in place for a safe situation all around. The staff and vets are very kind and compassionate - understanding the people and animals are both in distress. Was referred here by an outside veterinary hospital for an emergent endoscopy for my dog. When I arrived, my dog was taken straight to the back to be examined. The office staff were kind and the examining veterinarian Dr. Mamo was excellent and thorough. Didn't get to meet Dr. Allen who did my dogs endoscopy but they were able to get my dogs endoscopy done quickly and without complications. Regarding cost, I thought the pricing was more than fair. I took my dog, Lucy, there for diarrhea and dehydration. I thought that the care and service was exceptional. Lucy spent 3 nights there. I got a call from the vet on call each shift. The staff was easy to contact, cordial and very helpful. As a physician, I can understand and appreciate the thorough workup they did. I was also informed of the cost in advance, and the vets gave me options on when to do procedures like ultrasound (I could wait and see how she did before spending a lot of money on tests). My pup, ron swanson, was attacked by a german shepherd and was critically injured. He had a punctured lung and several severe lacerations. We rushed him to PETS referral center where they took amazing care of him. He stayed for three nights and PETS gave us 2x a day check ins and sent pictures. The doctors and nurses were very kind and patient with answering all our questions. Once my pup was ready to go home, he did a little victory lap in the hospital to celebrate his recovery.
