Serving pizza in San Gabriel since 1950, I've been meaning to visit Petrillo's, but usually stick to Asian food in the area. Recently, my son and I have been making pizzas on Friday nights as a bonding experience while my wife is out with friends. We make some, buy one, and compare. My son usually prefers his homemade, but Petrillo's is the exception! He loved the cheesy cheese pizza and the amazing cheese pull. I ordered half cheese and half their specialty pizza, which includes mozzarella, Romano cheese, house tomato sauce, Italian sausage, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, onions, and green bell peppers. Their small pizza is 12 inches and has 8 slices, which is much larger than other places. Petrillo's Specialty Pizza is stacked with generous toppings and has a doughy but crispy bottom - the best of both worlds. I enjoyed the Specialty pizza, especially the Italian sausage. While I'm not a mushroom fan, I ate them anyway. I'll likely hold off on mushrooms next time. They provide generous amounts of complimentary crushed red pepper packets, paper plates, and napkins. Parmesan cheese packets cost extra, about $0.50 each, if I remember correctly. The staff were friendly and are local residents, which is always great to see in a mom-and-pop business. You can eat in or order from the take-out counter on the right side. It's best to order ahead to avoid a 20-25 minute wait. My only minor complaint was the pizza was a bit sloppy when I took a picture, but I understand they're busy getting orders out. I will definitely be back to Petrillo's for pizza! read more

Well, first of all Petrillo's isn't my cup of tea. I think the staff is very rude, and all in all do not like their pizza. The reason for my three stars is that the lasagna is very good. However, they do not offer half orders. I am a single person and it would take me all week long to eat as much food as what comes in one order of lasagna! I will say this, though my husband thinks it's the best pizza around! So these are just my I just don't care for the pizza there. I think it's way too much bread and toppings. I called in an order today at 6 PM asked them if it would be possible to have my order ready by 7:05 because I would be late to work if it was longer than that well, it's 746 I let them know that I was super late. They didn't even make the order until I got there at 7:05 . I'm pregnant. I went inside. I told her that I needed to leave so I needed a refund even though I really wanted the food, the cashier scoffed at me and rolled her eyes. I explained again that I just really needed to leave because I was gonna be late, she called her manager out, and he just walked out yelling at me without even understanding what was happening, they were super rude, ultimately he told her to give me my money back and she started counting and had no idea how much money to give me back so she closed the register and without saying anything to me she left again made me wait another five minutes for her to come back while he taught her how to make basic change and so I yelled back at them to just give me my money so I could leave ,the cashier called me an ugly ass bitch and she stole my money, so much for good customer service yeah this is the worst place ever don't go here. They're just gonna rip you off and I treat you like crap mind you she already had my food in her hand, but she wouldn't give it to me.. they shorted me 20 bucks My husband had to go in there to tell them to not disrespect me, and the little cashier yelled more profanities. I called when I left and and talked to a manager and explain to him about his insane cashier, and he told me to come back for my money but I don't want I go near that place ever again. Petrillo's in San Gabriel is a classic old school Italian restaurant. The pasta dishes are extremely generous and very tasty, without being over spiced. They serve complimentary sliced traditional Italian bread and butter, which is excellent. The service was great, the waiter was friendly and helpful, and the dinners were brought to the table very quickly. They also give a complimentary salad or soup with the pasta dishes. If you like spumoni ice cream, be sure to try their spumoni ice cream pie, which is great! The next time we go we are going to order some pizzas, mainly because their take out location, next door, was so busy that the pizza must be good! Looking forward to going back. read more

On a Friday night in late January. My hubby and I went to dinner here. It was our first time there. We parked on the side street and walked to the restaurant. Inside has lots of booths and long tables for big parties. The waitress gave us a booth and menu. Nice ambiance of playing music in the background. Our server was nice and she gave us free bread and butter. I ordered chicken Parmesan with spaghetti with house salad and Pepsi drink $24.95 with chicken wings. The bread arrived and it was soft with butter pieces. Next our Soda arrived in Xlg cups with salad. I was almost full then my chicken Parmesan arrived. Petrillo's is a long-standing, old school Italian joint. In an area where it has become very Asian populated, this Italian spot is one of few. We had stopped by for lunch hoping for sit down dining, but the dining room wasn't open yet. Instead, we ordered a Medium Pepperoni Pizza ($28.25) for takeout, which took about 15 minutes. When we got the box, it was super greasy. The pizza is also sliced in squares, which gave more slices. Overall, it was good pizza but I wish the crust was more crunchy. It wasn't all that special to me, so maybe dining in would've been different. If I wasn't supporting a family business, I'd take a Costco pizza instead. read more

Great price for the quantity, but it's okay with flavor and texture. Parking: Side parking is available and there are a few parking spaces open at the back of the restaurant. Calamari: They do pack a lot of calamari, but the meal overall was okay. The squid felt tough to chew on and the fried breading was tough. Small Speciality Pizza: Pizza is HEAVY when you order, the box will feel heavy. Petrillo's packs a lot of toppings. If you're a heavy eater, I would say you can eat 2-3 slices. With 3 slices you will feel stuffed. I would order a small pizza if you are sharing with a group. Each small pizza comes in 8 slices. The toppings taste fresh and their Italian sausage are so juicy and full of flavor. However, their crust is on the harder side compared to other pizzas. read more

I'm of the opinion that their food is pretty mid. And over the years, their customer service has gone down the drain. It seems like it's difficult for them to fulfill the many orders that they receive... Not sure if they're into the takeout aspect of the business. You're more likely to receive food if you dine in... My partner and I were very disappointed with the service we received today when trying to dine here this evening. We looked up today's hours and it showed they were closing at 9pm this evening. We arrived at 8:05pm. Note... restaurants usually stop taking orders a half hour prior to closing. So we gave it a try. I was greeted by a woman with glasses and blonde curly hair. She asked, "how can I help you?" I said, "a table for 2 please." She came out with, "oh no we are closed." I told her I looked up the hours and it said you close at 9pm. She replied with "it doesn't matter what it says, it's what the boss wants." I was a bit shocked and caught off guard with her tone, her attitude, and her response. My family and I have supported this family business for many years and am very disappointed and very much offended with the approach I received from this woman. There could have been a more positive response from her and maybe a "order to go" offering rather than closing me off. Other customers were present at the time, at least 4/5 tables worth. It's sad to know how many businesses are struggling these days and for a business to treat loyal customers with this kind of service is disgraceful. I definitely will not be dining nor ordering from here again and going forward will not recommend this establishment others and fellow colleagues. I am also a party planner and had was considering Petrillo's to cater a couple of events I am planning to help support their business. Now, after all these years, will not step foot into this establishment again. I definitely recommend they update their operating hours. It says your pasta comes with a side of spaghetti but I didn't get a side of spaghetti! And i ordered 3 dishes. The bread was burnt and they didn't give me Italian salad dressing. I asked for Italian they gave me ranch! Worst customer service, I ordered from doordash and they ran out of fettuccine and only sent me garlic bead. No called me to let me know, I could have ordered something else. Came here on the 22nd of August . Was recommended by someone to try it. First thing , the waiter sitting people blonde older woman wasn't to friendly didn't even smile . Didn't make us feel welcoming as she should. The guy waiter was the nicest polite . The food was delicious I can say , the only problem was the noodle in my fettuccine Alfredo Were hard and all stuck to each other a big amount of them. They cooked too much and did not mix so they stood stuck and super hard . But besides that the fettuccine was great hopefully next time my noodles aren't all stuck and hard . The food was just how I remembered it, pretty good. The Princess got the chicken parm plate and I got a half and half spaghetti with a meatball and ravioli. Good portions. We ordered there and it came out quickly. The only thing that bothered me was I thought we would be able to be seated and seating does not happen until 4 pm. Bummer. Several years ago I left a very negative review because I felt Petrillo's had lost what made it special. As someone who has been eating here for years, that wasn't easy to do. I'm happy to report that things have changed for the better. The food is once again the star of the show. The Petrillo's Special is back to being one of my favorite pizzas in Southern California, loaded with toppings and packed with flavor. The sausage pizza is also excellent. The quality, consistency, and overall execution seem much closer to the Petrillo's I remember. The service still isn't perfect. Staff can sometimes seem a little overwhelmed or inattentive, and the dining room could use some updating. It's a bit dark and worn around the edges. But neither of those things stopped me from enjoying the meal. At the end of the day, great pizza is why people come here, and Petrillo's is once again delivering where it matters most. I believe in giving credit when a business improves, and Petrillo's has earned it. If you stopped coming because of past experiences, it might be time to give them another try. I'd been craving pizza on a Saturday night and finally decided to try Petrillo after hearing about it for years. I placed a takeout order through a food app, which estimated my order would be ready in just 30 minutes. Petrillo is located off Valley Blvd, and while the area can be busy, it wasn't too hectic when I arrived. There's some street parking available in front and along the side street, making it fairly convenient. Once I picked up my order, my first impression was how heavy the box felt. I ordered their most popular selection recommended by others here. The pizza was absolutely delicious, with every slice generously loaded with toppings. Most slices were perfect, though a few were a bit on the salty side. The thick slices were incredibly filling. I was surprised this was considered a small pizza since it could easily feed 2-3 people. I usually have a big appetite, but I couldn't finish it in one sitting. Freezing the leftovers worked out great and kept the pizza tasting just as good later on. read more

SGV is known for their Asian food but wanted to try an Italian restaurant for a change. We dined on a Saturday evening around 6 pm. We were greeted by the host and waited about 2-3 minutes to be seated. There were around 4 or 5 tables that were already seated and/or eating. Setting: typical western restaurant with booths and tables. Quite dark inside. We were sat at a booth but the seats had a bunch of residual bread crumbs on them. We had to ask a waiter/busboy to clean off the seats for us. Food: This restaurant is known for their pizza so we ordered their signature pizza to share. We also ordered the fried zucchini appetizer and the spaghetti bolognese which came with a side (Minestrone soup) There was complimentary bread and butter for the table - it was soft and fluffy on the inside and had a nice crust. But it came out cold. Would have been better if it was warmed up. Fried zucchini: well breaded, came with ranch. Portion size was ok, not too big but not too little either. But quite expensive at $11 for an appetizer that did not WOW the table. Minestrone Soup: average, quite salty, given it is early in the evening, the soup should not be this salty whereas the end of the day usually means the soup has been reduced and concentrated by warming/simmering. Spaghetti Bolognese: plenty of meat in the sauce and pretty tasty as well; but the biggest flaw was that the spaghetti was way overcooked. Huge negative for an Italian restaurant - the base/pasta of your dishes should be perfect and this was far from Al dente. Petrillo Signature Pizza: loaded with toppings, they did not cheap out with the toppings and pretty tasty as well; however, another big flaw was that the dough was dry and dense - the dough did not rise. The yeast in the dough was either non-existent or was not given enough time to rise and create the fluffy dough and crust texture of a typical pizza. We basically got dense flatbread. As this was the signature pizza, it was quite disappointing. Service: Average, nothing great. The servers came by a couple times only after the food came out. Could have really stopped by a couple more time to check in. Rating: 2 stars Review summary is based on mainly food quality as the quality of the food, attention to detail, and execution all was very subpar. I was craving pizza on a Friday night and wanted to find a spot that can deliver a good one. I've heard about Petrillo over the years and finally gave it a try. I did place an order for takeout via a food app. It advised that the order would be ready within 40-45 minutes. Upon arrival, I recognized that the restaurant is located off of Valley blvd, which was very busy. There was some street parking at the front and on the side street as well. However, it was very busy at around 6pm. Afterward, I head inside, only to find out I walked in the wrong side. I needed to head to the next door. It seems like this side does not have seating and is just made for takeout. After getting my order, my first impression was that it's a pretty heavy box. For my order, I got a small pizza with 4 toppings (Italian sausage, black olives, pineapple, and pepperoni). There was a lot of toppings on all slices and it was a pretty thick slices. I never felt like one topping was lacking. Some slices were perfect, while some were a bit more salty. I was surprised this pizza was considered small, as it's definitely shareable between 2-3 people. I feel like I can eat a lot and I was really full after 3 slices. growing up, I would come here often with my family. I especially always loved the penne vodka with chicken. I came back today to see how it stood up over 10 years. It was really good with the same flavor that I remembered from my childhood. My one comment is that the sauce could've been a bit thicker but otherwise it was pretty close. I like how they use breaded chicken, which gives it a really good taste. The portions here are insanely large. I think the dish that I got could've easily been split among three people or two very hungry people. They give you unlimited bread too, which was super soft and fresh so you could just probably load up on that if you don't wanna spend too much money. The person I was with got the chicken Parmesan, which came with two incredibly large chicken cutlets with perfectly melted cheese on top and in the second dish spaghetti noodles with a tomato sauce. I tried some of it, and it was so fresh and so delicious. They have a multitude of options here. If you want pasta and legitimate Italian food, you gotta come here. To start any entrée they give you either soup or salad so I got the salad. You can get the salad with any of the typical dressings like blue cheese, ranch, Italian, or a special Caesar salad that has croutons cheese and Caesar dressing, of course. The salad was huge, I got the Italian salad and it came with olives and tomatoes and pepperoncini. I don't particularly like olives, so it was nice that they were separated, and I could pick them off. The soup that they offered was minestrone. Another fond memory I have from this place is the pizza. I had a job in the area and they would order the pizza during meetings and I just remember the pepperoni being super thick and curling up around the edges with a thick crust. The cheese pull was like no other. This place is a gem of the san gabriel Valley. The service was very friendly today and I felt the positive vibes from the workers here. They really try to be kind and courteous. I appreciate that. They have Tiffany lamps with stained glass and a golden in laid ceiling that gives you a feeling of old world Italy. to the right of the restaurant they have a takeout operation. It's not hard to tell why this business has been around for like what 70 years? It's great and I look forward to many more years coming here. read more

Iv been going to Petrillos since 1962 while in high school...after relocating to orange county in '73 continued to always stop in for pizza whenever in the area. It's always great..the atmosphere..staff and always the food. It's the same high quality in every way. However a few days ago I brought some friends who were so excited to finally have the "always perfect" Petrillos Pizza ! Not a good experience ..from start to finish unfortunately. Waited for @ 20 min. For the doors to open. Doors locked at the time they were to open ..after buzzing to get someone's attention ..nothing so went next door to "pick up" n the employee was kind enough to go over n open. However told us we had to wait because someone was still vacuuming n not ready to open yet. We asked to just come in n sit in waiting area since it was 97 deg heat outside. She finally let us in to wait n were seated when he finished with the "house cleaning"..well passed opening time!! We finally ordered ..bread n salad delicious ...pizza not!!! It was like a pizza you'd get at the store n have to take be home n finish cooking! Dough not thoroughly cooked(doughy) ...little cheese n even few pepperoni!! We had ordered 2 pizzas (different) n both undercooked. We all had a piece n took them home ...and cooked them. Still not good. Obviously anyone can have an "off" nite but this was "off" all the way around. The one positive was our server who was most pleasant n efficient (after he finished his vacuuming)! First try, food wasn't ready on time & took an hour instead of 35 mins. Second try tonight, pasta was forgotten to put in. "Give us 8 mins" turned into 28 minutes. Please don't get me started on their free house bread.... Pizza portions are hugeee so please ask when you order, our medium can feed 6-8 people! Ridiculous! My dad suggested eating here since we've lived in this area my whole life. He said we got takeout once or twice when I was in elementary school. I don't remember this. So, my Taiwanese family went on this cultural excursion. I think the food here would be good if you have a palate that is for Italian American food. Fried calamari: tasty. Fried. Eat it while it's hot. Linguini Alla Clams: fine. I think I prefer like a Chinese style stir fried noodle. We took the leftovers home and I added soy sauce and seasonings to it, and it was much improved. Specialty pizza: thick crust. The sausage was very yummy! It was HUGE. We got the medium and each of us ate one piece there. Bread: the best part of the meal. Very fresh and delicious. The butter is those little cold packets. I would prefer a room temp butter to spread on this. Overall, it was fine. I think I am not the ideal customer, but I do think that it helps to hear a review like this.
