I recently went to Petra Cafe. I spent six weeks backpacking in the Middle East including Jordan, Egypt, Israel, and Turkey. My favorite place I visited was Jordan due to the hospitality of the people. Surprisingly Petra Cafe seems to be more influenced by Greek cuisine than Jordanian cuisine. In any event enjoyed my time here. Petra Cafe is a hole in the wall with a few tables indoors and some outdoors. Service was friendly enough. Not too many vegan items on the menu except some sides, falafel sandwich, and opted to go with the Greek Platter. I had it customized vegan by leaving out the Tzatziki and getting more eggplant salad. It was quite alright. I was dining in and they gave me a to go styrofoam container. One room for improvement would be to have better to go wares and would have been nice to have a proper plate when dining in. The food was quite alright. Got takeout from this small café and ordered a chicken wrap with garlic fries and a gyros dinner, along with their spicy sauce. The food is always tasty, and the spicy sauce was a great complement. Small place near the theater. We had the lamb gyro and the salmon and a side of fries and devoured it. Wish it had nicer seating and more ambiance, but the food was tasty. No, it was not charred chicken meat - it was burnt burnt. -Gyro salad: gyro meat was also super dry -Tzatziki: pretty good, missing the chunks of cucumber in it though -Side of grilled vegetables: exactly what you would expect and I'm so glad they were executed well. Unfortunately, I don't have a raving review to give them. If the price point were better there are definitely things I could rave about but $50 for this stings. Petra Cafe is an absolutely wonderful and friendly little Greek and Mediterranean Cafe next door to the Orinda Theatre. There isn't much room to sit inside, but the location is perfect if you are looking for a lunch spot near the theatre, and has convenient outdoor seating. I most often take my food to-go ..... the only problem with that is everything looks and smells so delicious I rarely can make it out the door with my take-out without immediately digging in. They have great gyros, souvalaki, lamb dishes, salads, soups, and rotisserie chickens. And their salad dressing is so good, it has local fans coming in just to acquire that. read more

Small place with limited seating but you can always find outdoor seating somewhere at the square. I love their gyros and Gyro Dinner plate as my go to item and the fries. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I was greeted with an old man who I presume was a worker sitting in the corner staring at me with a nasty glare. I didn't receive a single "hello" or "welcome" which wasn't surprising considering the restaurant's atmosphere seemed off and the floors/tables were dirty The cashier stared at me for a solid minute before going on her phone and looked at me like I was crazy when I asked to order. The food took a while to make. I finally prepared to dig in only to realize that the paper that the food was wrapped in was extremely soggy and made a mess everywhere. Overall, the food was alright but don't expect anything special from this place-- only average or even below at most. I recommend going to Kabob Burger in Lafayette. We love Petra! My wife and I have eaten here several times and here's what we have enjoyed: stuffed grape leaves, and every wrap that we have ordered (yes, every one!), including roasted eggplant, chicken gyros, Athenian, chicken souvlaki, and the chicken shawerma. My only complaint is that I have nothing to complain about because complaining usually leads to a funnier review. The service is great and the staff is always friendly. Lucky for my wife and I, one of our daughters, son-in-laws, and granddaughters live in Orinda. Petra is our go to spot when we're doing what we love to do the most: helping one of our children! Never again. Terrible customer service. We stopped at Petra to order catering for our daughter's wedding but the girl with the scruffy hair dragging over the counter was arrogant and did not seem happy to be there or eager to assist customers .Not welcoming at all. My experience on weekdays are different the lady always interacts with customers and makes you feel welcome. But this other girl gave me an attitude and made me feel like I was bothering her. She never took off her AirPods or cleared off her face since her hair was almost covering it. I left so she could get back to her phone. COVID-19 times and we're ordering from local restaurants! This is one of our favorite restaurants of all time! BC (Before COVID), we ate al fresco on the little tables right outside (or inside if cold/raining). We loved eating outside on the sidewalk. Well, we're looking forward to those days to return. We ordered take out this week. For us, this is one of our comfort foods. There's something for everybody here and everything we've had for the past 10 years or so is yummy! My pescatarian daughter usually orders the grilled salmon. My husband and son stick to the gyro platter. I'm all over the place but usually land on the gyro. We ordered on the phone and paid when we picked up. I don't think they're set up to take payments on the phone. Food was hot and we were so happy to have Petra food for dinner. ** The following review reflects my dining experience prior to the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** Little did I realize this would be my very last sit-down meal before the shelter-in-place order took effect. No offense but it wasn't an intentional choice. I was seriously stuck in gridlock on Hwy 24 on my way to Briones Regional Park when...OK, I admit it...I needed to make water. Isn't that what Hoke told Miss Daisy when he was driving her at night in the most redneck part of the Deep South? Well, I exited at Orinda in search of... Anyway, I was never so excited about seeing a gas station, so I made a beeline to the men's restroom... which was locked. Damn. Luckily the Starbucks next door was open, and all was golden, you should pardon the expression. Anyway, In a state of relief, I decided to have a bite before my Briones hike and found this tiny Greek spot next to the Orinda Theater. Now I'm not sure what Petra has to do with Greece. By sheer coincidence, I visited the real Petra just a year before, and I'm pretty certain I was in Jordan. Geographic confusion aside, I ordered the $12.95 Grilled Salmon Salad, which was their Greek Salad covered with a hefty albeit slightly overcooked salmon filet and accompanied by pita wedges (photo: https://bit.ly/2S7uthk). My first time here and tried the chicken shawarma and it was tasty! There is not much seating but the reason I gave it one less star is because the table outside was dirty and we were the only customers there so they should have at least wiped it! My first visit here and it was delicious. I went with a local who says her family has been coming her for years. The gentleman working the counter were very nice. We called in our order of 3 Gyros and they were ready to go in about 10 minutes. I got the falafel wrap and I forgot how yummy they can be with the dill sauce / tahini sauce. Great price and great portion. The other two were a a mix of chicken and beef. I like that the tomato, lettuce and tomatoes were very fresh. They also accommodated for special orders. Since I came back from Greece I've been craving some authentic Greek food and I have found my spot!! Petra's is local and family owned located right next to the Orinda theater. I parked in the parking garage because the first hour is free. The guys greeted me so warmly and they prepared my food in less than 5 minutes. I got a gyro to go with hot sauce on the side. The gyro was really flavorful and filling. The hot sauce was delicious too. I wish they sold it in bottles. The gyro definitely satisfied my craving and their service made me feel like family. I love the food here so much! It's so delicious and has generous portions for how much it costs. I would say it's a good value for the food ration; the cooks don't skimp out on your food. You can tell the food is made with love or by people who are passionate about their career or profession. The restaurant has a chill and relaxed feel to it; the times that I've come in, I get my order taken almost instantly. The food is cooked very quickly; I just have to sit down for a few minutes, and they call my order number. The cashier that l've gotten when I usually come during the weekends is a young woman. She's very welcoming and always greets me when I enter the restaurant. She's very patient with me when I place an order. I tend to get the names of the foods mixed up, and I have had to ask her for help a few times. She's always willing to help me and even explains to me the difference between each meal and what the meal is composed of. read more
