The brisket was well cooked and had a delicious bark. Sausage was also well flavored, though I would prefer a bit more pepper. This local barbecue is familiar to those traveling to Austin on SR71, as it is in the can't miss municipality of Ellinger. By municipality, the speed limit slows down but that's about it. Peters is right off SR71, to the starboard side of the road when headed to Austin. It's clear that those eating here are locals or know the level of good service. Everyone greets one another and there is some level of familiarity among patrons and staff. And even if you don't know the staff, they treat you like family. The barbecue is good. They have all the meats, and when I recently ordered brisket, I was asked whether I wanted lean or moist. Good question. I wouldn't say the quality is above other high quality BBQ in your town or in other small Texas towns. But it's not worse. With a plate comes sides, which you can help yourself at the sides bar. Allows you to get a bit more of what you really want and it's refreshing they don't police quantities. It's not like after the meat they give you, you're going to take advantage of them on sides. And a sign of a more trusting time where people did what was right. There's also self-serve soft ice cream included with purchase. A nice touch. For drinks, they have cans and bottles (including beer) plus tap water. Not a bad place at all to stop if you are passing through. Better than just about any other option I can think of. Heading back to Houston from Austin on Labor day weekend I wanted to grab a quick lunch and hopefully beat some of the traffic. We passed by Peters Bbq and saw a sign that said "chopped beef sandwich $1.99" I'm all over that! 2 bucks will get you a decent chopped beef sandwich. Your not going to be saying WOW this the the best bbq that I have ever had, but it's not the worst either. One thing I did like was how the meat was cut. It had some nice size pieces of brisket. I really hate how some places the beef looks like it has been run through a blender, but not here. I would get the sandwich again. It really is a good value. Service was Ok. They weren't real friendly but a least they were moving quickly. I was in and out in about 3 min with a couple of sandwiches to go. They're pretty decent. Their BBQ restaurant sign game is on point for sure. They have lots of drink options for being out of the way. I will say my food was cut fresh but was still kind of cold which was weird. Hence the three stars. I'd definitely give them another chance when I am out that way. read more

With all the meals you have access to unlimited potatoes, macaroni and cheese, cabbage, corn on the cob, green beans, coleslaw, potato salad and a few other items. Just an FYI, the rice that is in the sides buffet bar is rice pudding. Oops, didn't go real well with my green beans. My hubby and I both ordered the one pound of ribs. Figured we could take some home. They cut and weight your ribs, meat right in front of you. Kinda cool. A hole in the wall packing good pecan smoked BBQ for cheap prices. 1 lb of non baby backed ribs or brisket for $9... really good value for your money. The bbq was probably done earlier during the day but there was a smoke ring on the brisket and the ribs were seasoned well. Surprisingly good for what it was - and the staff was super friendly! Great roadside BBQ. Exactly what I would expect from a mom and pop joint in the side of the road. We order ribs, brisket and sides. The ribs were juuuiiicy! It was awesome. You know they know what they're doing when cutting the brisket they asked if I wanted lean or marbled. I chose marbles. Great flavor. I was definitely captivated by the taste. I can say, by far, this is the best brisket I've had so far. Better than Salt Lick. The pork ribs was standard. The BBQ sauce tasted like spaghetti sauce, I think. The brisket made it worth my while. Moist, tasty, just the right mixture of leanness and fat...yum! Price was comparable. When we stay at the Thousand Trails park in Columbus we make sure to visit this restaurant, about 10 miles from the park. It's really great home cooked food and the best fried catfish and fried shrimp ever! The restaurant is old but the people who run the place know how to cook. We love the buffet, too. Not one of the better BBQ places I've experienced but certainly not in the bottom either, HOWEVER, The Bad: While I can stomach weighing the meat prior to assembling the order (we all know how tough the margins are in the restaurant industry), the exceptionally gruff (and quite hairy) gentleman behind the register gave a distinct 'Deliverance' and/or "we don't like your kind here, take your food and go' vibe. Very uncomfortable for me and my family and unexpected in this day and age. I give the Yelp app all the credit for finding this spot and we were not disappointed by both the selection and the price. We had our dog with us and there is no pets allowed inside or seating outside (part of why I gave it 3 stars), but I went in and ordered the food and then just brought it out to our car. My boyfriend got ribs and I got brisket and then I chose sides from their buffet (greens, sweet potatoes, potato salad and green beans). Places like this break my heart. With the location and traffic count, plus built-in local clientele, this could be a 5-star place garnering rave reviews. Instead, it's an example of a business missing its true potential as a "must stop" Texas BBQ joint between Austin and Houston. If you're an veteran BBQ diner accustomed to observing experienced cutters and cashiers operating in clean, efficient work environments with great attitudes (Rudys or Donn's BBQ in Austin, for example), then you'll note immediately that the crew at Peter's is no "A Team" of BBQ jockeys. I won't go into the blow by blow of what I observed, but it was a trainwreck. A complete disaster of an operation. The staff appears to be mainly family/friend quality, lethargic, unfocused, no "snap" or personality. They frankly seemed overwhelmed by what would be considered "slow" or "low volume" business. Throw in some flies and a long wait in a relatively short (6 people) line, and I was reminded why I stopped stopping here many years ago. I want to like this place, but it's just too hard. Peter's is ripe for a "make over". It needs an experienced consultant or manager to come in and rework the entire setup, including a retooling of the work space setup to current standards. At present, it's a C- or D+ operation occupying an A+ location, and it's really sad to see. It's a relic of the past, run the way it's been run, probably forever. That may be cute and folksy for some, but it makes for a poor customer experience and lousy food. It may be several more years before I try this place again. read more

Drove 100 miles stop to eat at Peter's BBQ. The ribs are great and brisket. The beans were spoiled and I reported to the lady in the dinner.
