Would definitely consider this an "upscale" restaurant for the area but based on what people were wearing, I doubt there's a dress code. It's an old mansion from the 1850s. I was in a group event so got the private dining room upstairs. Quiet. Very separate from the rest of the restaurant. I saw a connected room that was at the front of the house with beautiful windows but not sure if that's also for private events or just an extension of where we were (we didn't use it). Servers were friendly and efficient. Crab cake appetizers were good. Shrimp cocktail was good sized. Chocolate mousse cake was very rich - most of us couldn't finish it - but delicious for what we could handle. Personally didn't like the cod but that may have been because it was the cater menu and they didn't make it custom like they would for a single table's order. read more

Cocktails and appetizers were good Service was excellent. Shout out to Hayley! Steak was good to perfection , so were the scallops. Part of the greens were too salty, though. Honey desert was amazing! The biggest letdown was the chocolate mousse cake. The consistency was off- too dense. Otherwise flavor was on point. Would revisit read more

If you are within 50 miles of this place, you HAVE to stop. If you're within 100 miles, you really should stop by. I love everything on the menu, but I really live, and would die, for their salads. And the oysters. And the homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream and blueberry sorbet. And the mocktails. Hand made, local ingredients, perfect proportions, and portions, so good. Oh, and the atmosphere is exquisite too. read more

Net is do not go! There are way better places with way better food at a less of a cost to you. 19 years ago it was awesome. We used to go there all the time for special occasions. Fast forward to 2022. Awful and just disappointing. From the beginning it was a lack of attention / service. Then it is an over priced 'fancy' drink that is way under poured. I had to go to the bar to get it because the wait staff was just chilling out at the bar doing nothing. The salad was just over coated with dressing and drowning it out of flavor. Finally, I had their crab cake that was luke warm with luke warm potatoes. Honestly it tasted like canned crab meat. My friend had the grilled shrimp that were just bland as hell. At that point we just could not wait to get out of there. But wait, don't forget they charge you an extra 2% for credit card transactions. As I understand from calling around you are one of the only places to do this in Williamsport. Very sad to see to say the least. When is it ok to over pay for mediocrity? Is this the best representation that the "historic" district has? read more

My wife and I dined at the Peter Herdic House Restaurant on special occasions for 25 years when we first arrived in Pennsylvania. The last two occasions we tried to dine there we were disappointed, first by the service and the because the restaurant were out of potatoes(!) So, we avoided this restaurant for the next quarter centuty. This time was very different. We were celebrating my birthday and the dining was well beyond our expectations. My wife and I started by shaing a shad Herdic, a cold Williamsport specialty: shad smoked locally with capers, red onion, housemade pumpernickel, horseradish dill mayonnaise. Superbe medly of flavors! We then shared a house salad, a mixture of etiolated asparagus, tangerine sections, carrots and radishes in a house dressing, covered with Parmesano cheese flakes. For our main courses, my wife chose the lamb shank, an 18 ounce shank from a local farm, braised with moroccan spices, roasted local plums, carrot and onion served over cous-cous and finished with a cilantro gremolata. She took half home with her and made lamb stew from it. I chose pan-seared the sea scallops on housemade ravioli filled with lump crabmeat and savory vegetables, and finished with local carrot coulis, roasted beet and lemon-thyme brown butter. Both were cooked to perfection. Compliments to the chef. For dessert, we chose the ganache torte, dark chocolate cream in a pecan crust, served in a pool of caramel sauce. Chocolate + caramel + pecans, all housemade and prepared superbly. What could be better? The service was exceptionally excellent. Our waitress was prompt and all the warm plates were served piping hot. The glass of open Chardonnay was delicous (I foget the label). We were so delighted that I chose to finish it all off with a snifter of Courvoisie and a double decaf espresso, but they were out of decaf espresso and caffein makes it difficult to sleep. It was the only disappointment of the evening, and it was but a tiny one. read more

Both my daughters worked there years ago. The food is divine and the service and atmosphere positively wonderful!

When it came time to choose a special dining location for my parent's 50th anniversary celebration, the Peter Herdic House was at the top of my list - thankfully, it turned out to be the perfect choice! Having never been here before, but due to my years of studies at Pennyslvania College of Technology (aka Penn College, or PCT), I was already familiar with the fine dining and hospitality experience that is the Peter Herdic House. PCT has the premiere programs for culinary arts and for hospitality, and many students and graduates work through the Peter Herdic House as part of their experience, or post-graduate employment. So I know very well that if you want the finest dining in the Williamsport region, you go either to the College's Le Juene Chef or to the Peter Herdic House. The Peter Herdic House is a restored, lush Victorian house that wa built in 1854 by Peter Herdic - who is commonly known as the 'Father of Williamsport'. Herdic settled to Williamsport back then, and became a huge developer of the City. He even was Williamsport's first mayor, if I recall. But the Peter Herdic House was Herdic's home, and is now Williamsport's premiere dining establishment and a gorgeous inn for visitors to stay at. The side of the Herdic House has a beautiful, ornate porch on which to enter, from when you are dropped off in the front or from the limited parking in the back. You will be in the lounge upon entering, where you can have drinks and appetizers or wait for your table. Depending on the size of your party, you'll have a table in one of the various sized rooms, have a larger table reserved, or you may even request a private dining room. Our thanks to Brooke, who provided super-friendly and helpful service for our entire experience from beginning to end. She even went so far as to allow us to drop of the anniversary cake beforehand, and made a really nice candle-lit display to place it aside of our table as we dined. It happened to be a theme-night where they played Beatles music in the background, and there was a Beatles-centric specials menu - where the dishes had names that related back to the Beatles. My mom and my niece were both big Beatles fans, so they really got a kick of out the atmosphere! Two kinds of house-made bread were brought out in baskets, Italian and whole wheet, as you awaited the meal to be served. Our food came out perfectly, as even the Filet Mignon steaks were cooked to the desired levels; my "medium rare" steak was a perfect red in the middle, perfect pink towards the edges, and a great, smokey char on the outside. The Parmesan-crusted shrimp were juicy, meaty, and full of great flavor; these were not your average Red Lobster shrimp, to be sure! The entrees on the menu were well thought-out with their accompanying sides, and the meals were respectably priced for the amount of quality of food we received. The plates were perfectly set, the silverware was meticulously cleaned, and the lighting was just right for a highly enjoyable dining experience. Being such a great family event, Brooke even helped us take some great photos in a couple of the Herdic House's prime areas, such as the sweeping, beautiful stairs and the ornate fireplace. I couldn't have expected a better experience, and wished that it had not taken this long for me to visit after all these years. It's easy to see why the Peter Herdic House has remained one of Williamsport's premiere staples, and why you should consider it for any of your particular occasions! read more

We were looking for a place to get a good cocktail and some yummy food. This place filled out half that request. The location is amazing and we were lucky enough to get a brief tour. Note: Susan the Procrastinator strikes again. This review has been sitting around in a Word document on my computer for a couple of weeks. The Peter Herdic House is an inn and restaurant located in an historic Williamsport house. It's where you go in Williamsport if you're seeking intimate, fine dining. My husband took me to dinner here for my birthday and it was s-o-o-o romantic. The food here was almost all locally-sourced and the service was top-notch. And yes, since it was a milestone and a half birthday for me, he said to order whatever I wanted. Oh, but I did too. For appetizers, the French Onion soup looked mighty tempting, but I always get that when I eat out 'cos it's a favorite. We went for the Tomato and Corn Stack: tomaotes, roasted corn, basil and feta. As for my salad, I tried the roasted peach over baby greens. I've had roasted and grilled fruits only on rare occasions--somehow making them at home on the Foreman Grill just isn't the same! Oh and then for the main course. I had the small steak, a fliet mignon done just the way I like it--medium well. Again, the steaks were locally sourced and it really made a difference. That steak just melted in my mouth a I slowly savored every bite. I also liked how they had larger and smaller cuts available. Hey, I eat less than guys do and there's no way I'm packing in a 12-16 ouncer. Besides, we didn't have to schlep home leftovers so my meal was just right. So kudos for my hubby for finding and taking me to such a wonderful place for my birthday. read more

If you are looking for the absolute best place to go for local and organic fare, the Peter Herdic House is it. Warmer weather begs for a seating on the patio. Atmosphere was great Staff very attentive and friendly Great drink prices. Salmon was dry. I was expecting mouth watering. Halibut dish was good but probably should have come with some potatoes not just vegetables. Salmon just came with string zucchini. Could have used less of that and more of something else But the salmon was dry. I was so looking forward to it and the sauce. And natural juices.... Thursday nite we were the only ones inside. Interesting. Good eclectic music selection read more

We were in town for an interview dinner and this is where the company took us for dinner. It was a beautiful old Victorian home turned restaurant. We were there around the holiday season and the Christmas decor made it look like something out of a Hallmark movie. So cozy and beautiful. I loved the Christmas music playing in the background. Everything on the menu sounded incredible. I had the filet - WOW. Probably one of the best I've had! Dessert was a pomegranate lemon cheesecake that was out of this world delicious. If you're in town for a weekend I would highly recommend this place for a meal. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. read more

Well, the actual rate in this case would be 3.5 stars and the reason why I rounded it to 3 (instead of 4) is explained below. Occasion: family reunion to celebrate bunch of things happened in the last few weeks. Good mood and need of delicious food. The restaurant looks from outside (and actually is) like a solid Victorian house. The ambience was classy and quiet. Our appetizers: Shrimp Cocktail, Escargot and Corn/Tomato stack. Unlike the entrees and desserts, which were almost in all cases delicious, these appetizers were just ridiculous. The escargot have been served in the traditional way, but eating them was like having pieces of garlic in your mouth. Neverthless they still could be considered tasty and almost enjoyable. Shrimp Cocktail: that was really unexpected: three untasty shrimps in a cocktail glass full of ice. That's it. Pretentious and really overpriced. Same for the Corn/Tomato stack. Easy: three slices of tomatoes stacking on top of each other with some corn....again superoverpriced and poor in terms of creativity. Entrees: almost everybody had the filet mignon, which was very good. I asked for a medium-rare cooking and I got something extremely tender, juicy and I really enjoyed it. My creme brulee was not tasty at all (maybe because in other places I could have something not only creamier but also flavoured with rosemary or lavande -again, sometimes creativity could help!). Neverthless, I must say that I also tasted the Raspberry Cassis and another dessert with the Chambaud that were remarkable. read more

What an incredible gift in this town. I went here with my wife and couldn't have been more pleased. The house is beautiful, the food excellent, wine was very good and they let us cork it and bring it home as we didn't finish it. If you have time and room in your budget for a great meal in an excellent environment, eat here. For the two of us, sharing an appetizer, we both had the filet, a bottle of win including tip was $150. Worth every penny, this was one of the nicest restaurant experiences we've ever had. The staff was exceptionally kind with just the correct amount of attentiveness. There is something for everyone here, a couple different dining rooms, outdoor seating and a small bar in the back if you just want to sit for a drink. My favourite moment was overhearing the bartender berate a guest for playing with their phone when they had great company here at the bar. They all laughed, he put the phone away and they all resumed conversations with the people around them. I love that they encouraged the patron to interact rather than burying themselves in their phone. Every stop in Williamsport should include a stop here. Although it was too late for us, their B&B next door was no more expensive than my hotel and I'm sure, miles better. read more

We celebrated our mother's special birthday in December at the Herdic House. Everything was perfect! The staff made recommendations for a florist and photographer. The green room was elegant and beautifully decorated for the event. They worked with us to plan a delightful menu that included an array of appetizers, prime rib (cooked just as we had ordered), and a special chocolate and raspberry cake. The food and service is the best in the area. We are so grateful that they made my mother's birthday such an amazing event! read more

We went to a wedding reception at the Peter Herdic House in mid-December. It was incredibly beautiful and the food was delightful. I helped coordinate the day-of-wedding, so I had to check in with the staff many times. They were most accommodating and really made the experience memorable. We went to the bar in the House after the wedding and enjoyed some nice scotch. We also stayed for the weekend at the mansion next door-the Peter Herdic Inn. The mansion is warm and inviting. Each guest room is unique. The best part was the breakfast served at 9am--a treasure! Hot breakfast made over conversation with various employees or owners of the establishment. I need to find a reason to come back to Williamsport to enjoy these two places again! read more

Do you want top-notch food in Williamsport? Great service and a nifty atmosphere? The Herdic House is the place to be. There's a huge emphasis on the local and the organic and the cuisine trends towards the French. My wife and I visit the Herdic house twice a year while in the area visiting family. It is both the best and most consistent high-end restaurant we've been to. Let me preface this review by giving some background on us. As a dual-income couple with no kids, and 0 hobbies, exploring where to eat (including trying to top our adventurous experiences) is one of our few enjoyments. So while we may not have the culture, palate, or knowledge of professional foodies, we've definitely gotten some experiences under our belt for comparison. - The atmosphere and staff is comforting and friendly. It's definitely not snobby like some fancy-pants places we've been to. - We often see the Chef purchasing for the restaurant at the local farmer's market. The small-town feel is just something you can't get from the restaurants down here around D.C. - Yes, the menu is pricey, but for what you get compared to other places it's actually an extremely good value. - Items are consistent in their awesomeness. There have been plenty of places where some dishes are great, but one of us would remark after a not-so-great encounter, "well, that's on me, I ordered wrong." However, at the Herdic House, you can *NOT* order wrong. Everything is just phenomenal, with a lot of thought and preparation going into each item. Even when they change the menu from season to season. - I had the roasted dates here first (with goat cheese and bacon), which became my favorite dish (of life, not just this restaurant). I have since tried making them myself, and gotten them at various other locations around the East Coast.. and while they are never bad, the Herdic House just makes them the best (I think it's the perfect wood-smoke flavor they somehow manage to imbue them with). - I always order fish here, because fish is just one of those things that places have trouble doing perfectly (both in preparation and freshness of fish), and Herdic nails it every time. That quality is seen in all the other dishes as well, but for me it's nice being able to order fish without it being a gamble. - The iced tea. In other reviews I mention how Iced Tea (unsweet) is my secret weapon for testing a restaurants capability. Is it just a commercial EZ Make blend? Plain old Lipton? How clean is the water/pot? This is easily the best iced black tea at a restaurant (not including some Asian places that use different leaves all-together), there's got to be some special leaves or spices put in there to give it that unique and delicious flavor. (It better be good, considering there's no free re-fills on them... but I'll still drink 4 glasses without hesitation). Also note that this is a great place for parties (like adult birthdays or rehearsal dinners) since they have a nice space upstairs. read more

This is hands down the best restaurant in the Williamsport Area, and that's saying something considering all the new great establishments there are now. A beautifully restored Victorian home coupled with a family owned and run business and a slew of regulars make for a wonderful, charming and fun atmosphere. All food is sourced locally, organically and seasonally. The food is consistently perfectly done. Specials are always to die for. Prices are reasonable for the quality. And yes you can show up in a pair of jeans, though my daughter and I love the excuse to dress up. The decor at Christmas is beautiful and dining on the wisteria covered patio in summer is divine. The filet is one of the best I've had and I've eaten in some of the best known steakhouses. Starting with a perfect, fresh and local cut then seasoned and cooked to perfection. My daughter dies for the mashed potatoes as well! I rarely end a meal here without a cafe Herdic, and they have many other after dinner drinks and homemade desserts to choose from, all divine. I recommend this place to any and everyone dining in this area. read more

This is easily the best restaurant in Williamsport, and probably among the finest in Pennsylvania. The restaurant is located in the 1850s mansion of lumber baron, Peter Herdic, and it features a gorgeous bar, a three-story chandelier, and a patio covered in wisteria. The Miele sisters, Gloria and Marcia, have been serving up great food and drink here since 1984. And with Gloria's daughter, Liz, taking over the kitchen a few years ago, the restaurant has had a complete renaissance, now serving a menu of almost exclusively local, organic and sustainable food. I'm only in Williamsport once or twice a year, but I always work a visit to the Herdic into the trip. I love their hen entree and their spinach salad. My only complaint is that they're closed on Mondays. A couple of cool notes: -Try the desserts. The Miele sisters' mother, Daisy, who's in her 90s, still comes in every morning to make them. -Have a drink at the bar. It's the witness stand from the old county courthouse. -Get the Shad Herdic. It's a recreation of a recipe from the 1860s. read more

The setting is a restored Victorian home from the logging era...beautiful. The food is incredible no matter whether you choose from the menu or select one of their specials. I'm no Paula Dean but this here is a fine central Pennsylvania establishment. Relative to the area, I reckon you'd be hard pressed to find a better place to take you and yourn for a fancy supper.
