Cute and quaint little restaurant, like a less-corporate Cracker Barrel. It isn't fancy or fine-dining, but for a homey little place in central PA, it is five-star material. When you walk in, there are woodworking projects and swings outside for purchase. There is also a gift shop inside the store. My family and I went for lunch around noon on a Sunday and the restaurant was not that busy. Our server was friendly and patient with my 3 year old as we encouraged her to order for herself, and also made her laugh a few times as she checked on us over the course of our meal. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and it was honestly one of the best I've ever had! The crinkle cut fries were perfectly crisp. My dad ordered the bison burger and my mom ordered a BLT, they get these dishes every time they come here and say they were delicious. My husband got a crispy chicken salad, the chicken was yummy and the portion was quite generous. I would love to come back here again the next time I visit my parents.... that Sasquatch burger is calling my name!

It's a cozy homestead style restaurant. Friendly service and fair prices. On this occasion I had LA French Toast with sausage. It was very good and would order it again. Thank you

An excerpt from my book going LOCAL! My friends and I have been coming to Restless Oaks for a number of years on our way to the Finger Lakes wineries in New York State. It's always good to start with a great breakfast before a day of wine tasting. And since this place is only a half hour or so from home, but two hours from the lakes, it worked out perfectly for us. By the time we get to the first winery we have a solid meal in our stomachs and are ready to sample the fruit of the vine. The Restless Oaks though is more than a great breakfast stop. It's a full-blown restaurant, museum and art gallery with a gift store and book shop on the side. The first clue to the Oaks' amazing multi-personality is the chainsaw-sculptured tree trunks inside and out. As you approach the entrance to the restaurant, you walk through a long covered wooden walkway and porch. All along the walkway are stones of all sizes with sayings etched in them. There's also a huge set of Toledo Scales at the end of the walkway, and I like to weigh myself before and after breakfast - this would be a very handy item when dieting. The restaurant is divided into two main parts - a coffee shop and a beautiful dining room. In the dinning room you'll find a high wood ceiling, an enormous wooden beam spanning the width of the ceiling and a huge fireplace. Taxidermy, photos, wood sculpture and artwork adorn the walls, and the sea of wooden tables can accommodate about 100 people. It's hard to talk about Restless Oaks without mentioning wood, but it's not only part of the architecture, art and décor, it's the life blood of the community as well as the owners. The Maguire family has owned and operated this wonderful roadside restaurant since 1984. Originally from Clearfield PA, the family moved to McElhattan to pursue a logging business and open a saw shop where they planned to sell everything from chain saws to axes. They built a modest log cabin structure for the shop but Jim Maguire and his son, Jim Jr., went to a local auction and bought restaurant equipment instead. Soon after, the Restless Oaks Restaurant opened its cabin doors. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim Jr. on a visit one morning, and he invited me to ride along with him in his diesel pick-up while he took care of some things for the logging business. As we drove up into the mountains behind the restaurant he told me all about their place, their business practices and philosophy. When I asked about the sculptures he told me that instead of spending the entire advertising budget on ads, they use half of it to invest in artwork. He said, "People might forget our name five miles down the road but they may never forget what they've seen here." He went on to explain that his mission is "To meet, greet and feed the folks. Make sure they have a good time and good food at an honest price and a good experience the whole time." He talked about his staff and how he encourages them to greet everyone as if they are the first customer of the day. "Even after the 199th person through the door, treat number 200 like the first. Remember, that even though you've seen [customers] all day, that's the first time they see you." I doubt the chain places have the philosophy that the Restless Oaks has. Stopping here at the Restless Oaks is always the right call. The folks here are always happy to see you, and if you're lucky enough to meet Jim Jr., you're in for a treat! Enjoy!

A cozy, family owned restaurant with good counter service and simple menu. Its within a mile of the highway, takes American Express, unlike other family owned restaurants in the area. Breakfast stops at 11 AM. My server did a great job. They have good pies here and very good coffee. The atmosphere here is very cozy and the place is well decorated in an all wood cabin structure, I walked in and white christmas was playing overhead, and I felt like I was back in the nostalgic Americana!

Excellent. Good food and large portions at reasonable prices. Great if you also like large, rough hewn beams (40'?) and miscellaneous Pennsylvania nostalgia. Paid about $10 for baked cod lunch special that included au gratin potatoes and chunky cole slaw.

    Folk art!

I haven't been here since high school and on a recent trip back home I suggested Restless Oaks for breakfast before we headed out of town. The menu is simple and straight forward, the service very friendly, and the atmosphere is charming! It really brought back a lot of memories. Our breakfasts were hot, hearty, and way bigger portions than expected. Five pieces of bacon people! Five big pieces of bacon, I had to give some to my husband to finish, what with two large eggs and a the very generous helping of potatoes. You won't go away hungry, that's for sure. Would love to come back again for breakfast during our next visit! I'm thinking the pancakes will be colossal.

We had lunch there. Very average food and service. Limited menu. Wood carvings are interesting.

The waitress had a sense of humor and helped us with suggestions for breakfast in town the next day. The owner saw us looking out the window at some large birds and he swiftly showed up at our table not only with our tasty pierogi appetizer but with a portable telescope so we could watch the baby eagles across the river learning how to fish with their parents. We had the wings (good inventive flavors!) and the special (smoked chicken, mashed potatoes and lemon zested peas with gravy) that tasted like a fresh pan sauce and was flavorful and definitely homemade tasting. What kind of tavern takes the time to add lemon zest to vegetables? A place that cares about the food they serve! And did I mention the beer was very affordable? We really enjoyed our dinner here and think the folks who live nearby are lucky to have a spot like this.

I first visited Rock Bottom with friends several years ago--shortly after it changed ownership. It was a pleasant stop, but things have continued to improve. The owner has improved the river view by carefully tending a riverfront lot across the street and keeping large windows. There's also a side deck with river views. Thus family-owned establishment has great service and a friendly clientele who are welcoming to all. The tap system is currently offline but Rock Bottom has a nice selection of domestic bottled beers. Four stars only because we didn't have a chance to try the food; bar service was great If you're in the Lock Haven area definitely check out this local jewel. You'll have a good time and probably make some new friends.
