Good Chinese is hard to come by these days. Some dishes are a miss, but overall it's great to have a decent Chinese restaurant in the area.

Pleasantly surprised with how good the food was. The iron pot rice with chicken sausage was excellent. The rice was cooked perfectly and not overpowered by soy sauce. What's nice is the menu offers more hard core Chinese dishes in a way that many in the US could appreciate. The flounder in numbing sauce is an example. This is not a dish you'll see on most Chinese menus in suburbia US. It is a good choice and had interesting flavors without being too odd. The steamed bronzino is another example of a good balance of flavors and not masking the taste of the fish. Bustling new Chinese restaurant that just came to McLean. I came with a group of four and I enjoyed everything that we tried. My favorite had to be the half peking duck, which was served with green onions, cucumbers, wraps, and a hoisin sauce. The fried rice here was lovely as well. The plate of snow pea tips was heaping and so delicious. We ordered quite a bit of food and I left feeling full and satisfied. The day I came, it was very busy and we were warned that the food might take longer, but it still came out very quickly! Felt like I hardly had to wait. read more

The food that I have received from Peter Chang has been good. My lower review score is for the most recent visit, the Christmas night debacle. The restaurant was extremely crowded and behind schedule with people standing in extremely close proximity. Orders were not coming out in numeric order and one had to get a hold of a beleaguered staff member to find out about their order. Crowd control and perhaps texting when orders are ready would have been beneficial. I was in close proximity to many people for about an hour past the time when my order was supposed to be ready, and I ordered a couple of hours early. Long story short, I think this is where I was exposed to the worst virus that I have had in years and have been sick for days. This is the only location where this could have happened as none of the family with whom I was close are sick. I do think that crowd control could have been better managed, even given the fact that the restaurant has only been open for a couple of months. Cold and flu season is in full swing as is Covid, and I don't think that management properly planned for the degree to which the restaurant would be busy. Had I not ordered and paid online, I would have canceled the order and walked out, despite the quality of the food. read more

This place used to be an old Chinese restaurant, but now a new one :) I ordered for delivery and was surprised that I did not get any complimentary rice for Kung Pao Chicken or Mapo Tofu. But I could not complain... the meats were tender, juicy, and clean--and this also applies to pan fried pork dumplings. The veggies.. especially the onions were properly caramelized and I very much appreciate it. I am on a diet and was only planning to eat a little, but of course, couldn't stop! DO NOT order takeout from this restaurant. I have had two or three good meals in the restaurant, but it seems that they pre-package takeout meals and microwave them as needed. I picked up the meal as soon as it was ready and drove it 3 minutes to my house. But our Sesame Beef, which should be crispy, was limp and soggy. In contrast, I picked up Sesame beef from an Arlington restaurant and drove it 20 minutes to my house and it was still very crispy. The Beef Chow Fun was thick and gluey, like it had been sitting for a long time. The vegetables had completely lost their individual taste and character. The Crispy Sweet Corn Pancake was a soggy mess and incredibly sweet, even for a dessert. read more

We have visited twice since its opening. The first time was on the opening day. My son and I were excited but were told there was a party and they didn't receive walk-in customers. Then, we visited again the week after. This is definitely not the Peter Chang we like in Arlington. The menu is simple (different from the Arlington and Rockville ones), the prices are higher, on top of that, the portion is small by the standards of Chinese food. I wanted this to be good so much! I miss having a great Chinese spot nearby. While I think the service was good, and I'm used to the limited parking in the area as a regular at Tachibana, the food just did not do it for me. The vegetable pot stickers were soggy and lackluster and the sauce that came was overly sweet. The Kung Pao chicken had a reasonable spice level to it, but tasted absolutely loaded with sugar. It honestly tasted like something you'd get at much lower rent Chinese place. No depth of flavor, no subtlety, just a ton of salt and sugar. I'll try the spot again in the hopes of maybe having a different experience, but the first impression wasn't great. read more

Mapo Tofu. I did not ask for less salt but the disk is real salty. I did not want to hurt my family so it went to the trash can. Mongolian beeft. The vegetable was overcooked. The whole thing did not look and taste attractive. The green bean is acceptable. I have tried Peter Chang in Arlington, in Charlottesville and Mama Chang. This was the most unsatisfied experience. I hope this review reach the owner or the cook. I won't be back this location. I did give 4 stars instead of 2 stars cause it was just a meal for me but a serious business for the restaurant. Ordered delivery, which was very fast. However, some elements of the meal left me unimpressed. Ordered the shredded pork but I didn't receive any rice with it. I assumed it came with (at least) a small side of white rice but that wasn't the case. The shredded pork is good but odd to eat without some rice. I also ordered the duck spring rolls. Not very tasty and the dipping sauce was equally not good. Also, there was a bone in one of them. read more

Nothing special, more expansive than Mama Chang which is the sister restaurant in Fairfax. Again compare to Mama Chang food was okay but for the price? It was not worth it. We tried Creamy fried pork, Sichuan Branzino (Don't know the exact name) and soup dumplings. Portions are smaller than Mama Chang but it's pricier! Although rather plain, the bright, functional interior of Peter Chang is a huge improvement over the former establishment with its dark red walls and dark lanterns. Now you can see the delicious food you are being served! I had carryout the first time (sesame chicken, and a pork dish) and they were super fresh. Note that Rice is not included, you need to order it. I went with family on a Sunday night and the place was hopping--reservations suggested. Apps were steamed dumplings and lomein noodles for two boys. We had the Peking Duck which is outstanding; fabulous crispy skin and moist meat. Sides of fried eggplant, green beans and brussels sprouts were delish. And we took home some Kong Pao chicken with peanuts, too. We ordered too much for six people but every bite was so good. We deliberately visited based on his award-winning reputation. A simple lunch of soup and entree. To note first, we ordered from the lunch special menu, but only after reading the full menu. My hot/sour soup had an off flavor from what I am used to, the duck in it? Perhaps, but nothing special, and I had to separate some of the mundane snow-white mushrooms with my spoon, but did expect something like straw mushrooms. Her pork wonton soup was excellent, and both came steaming hot. My twice-cooked pork was tasty w/just the right amount of Szechuan peppers for me; too spicy for her, but she tolerates none. Most of my pork was very tender but there were too many chewy parts, not what I expected, and not well trimmed. Who says Asians eat lots of veggies and less meat? I had minimal leafy veggies and wished for more. Her sesame beef was excellent, though, to me, hard to taste any beef through the breading, but she loved it and great flavor. Hers came with a few broccoli crowns. Both entrees were good in not being drowned in any indistinct sauce; the sauce on both was perfect, but this was a rare time when I wished for more veggies, or maybe they do so to get you to order veggie sides..... My complaint is the lunch portion size, too large, each easily enough for two or more, but such may explain the $18-$22 entree price. The service is new and learning. I gave my order and after my partner arrived and gave hers, the server turned to me and asked for mine, about which I had to remind her that I already had done so. Rice, of course here, is $1 extra, no problem and I forgot, thankfully the server came back and asked; we ordered one serving which was plenty for us, and excellent rice. Would I go again? Maybe to Mama Chang's and get something more special off of the main menu to better experience Peter Chang's reputation and culinary expertise. Bottom line, we had a tasty, yet mundane, Chinese lunch for $34 each(w/tip) with enough food leftover for a couple of more meals each. You decide. read more

Second night here. We ate here 2 nights ago with another couple and LOVED the meal, so we were excited to come here again. Really different experience. I guess we ordered the wrong things tonight. I even asked the server if the chef changes on certain nights and he said it's the same chef, except for Mondays (we ate here on a Friday and a Sunday). I was excited to try the "BAKED" brussel sprouts in abalone sauce. I was expecting a hot dish and it was chilled. The brussel sprouts seemed barely cooked, so we asked the server if the brussel sprouts are baked because it seemed very underdone, barely blanched and cold. He came back and said the chef told him the brussel sprouts are BOILED. We came home and checked the online menu and it clearly states "baked". Still not sure if the brussel sprouts were meant to be served cold but clearly not prepared the way the menu describes. Sauce was delicious but no discernible abalone flavor. Would not order again. We loved the combination lo mein we had the first night so we thought the wagyu beef lo mein would be even better. It was not. It was so bland and the beef did not taste like wagyu beef at all and we have had good wagyu beef before. We actually put some of the brussel sprouts sauce on the lo mein so we could eat it - but ended up bringing most of it home to pass off onto our son, who isn't as picky. The crispy beef was not what we expected. The beef there was much more tender than the wagyu in the lo mein. Unlike any other "crispy beef" we've had in other Chinese restaurants. It looked like it was coated in panko breadcrumbs and deep fried (without the beef being seasoned in a marinade beforehand - or at least it didn't taste like it was). It had drizzles of two kinds of oddly sweet sauces. Again we dipped it into the cold brussel sprouts sauce to eat it (there was a lot of this "abalone" sauce in the bottom of the dish). We will come again but will not order anything we ordered tonight. The first night we had Amish dry-fried shitake mushrooms and eggplant. THAT we would order again. Very flavorful and unusual. We will pass on the shrimp and pork wonton with chili oil that we had tonight. It was okay but not nearly as good as the sizzling shrimp dumpling we had the first night. Definitely a hit or miss. We liked the combination lo mein so much the first night that we ordered it for our son as a takeout tonight. First night, it was very flavorful but a little on the salty side for me but I still enjoyed it. I tasted my son's combination lo mein tonight when we got home and it was definitely not as salty as the first night, a little more bland. It's a hit or miss here but thankful for another option for Chinese food in McLean. We will go back but may stick to what we enjoyed the first night and definitely not get anything we ordered the second night. read more
