We bring our dogs to the Ygnacio Valley location in Walnut Creek. This review is not about our groomer. Jaz does a good job and pays attention to how we want our animals groomed. This review is for the other groomer who looked right at me several times after I pushed the button for service to drop my dogs off. I was standing there for over 10 minutes and she blatantly ignored me. I would normally give her the benefit because she did have a dog connected on the table - however in 10 minutes of watching her she grabbed her phone at least 8 times and was texting. She didn't even pay attention to the dog she was too busy on her phone. When I said something to a person that worked there what was going on she informed me that this lady was the new grooming manager. Wow what kind of behavior is she teaching her grooming staff. I have complained before that it was dirty and messy with un-stocked shelves and never any shopping carts, but I was very happy to see carts, clean floors, happy cashier and no piles of stuff sitting everywhere. I walked into this Petco in Walnut Creek, Ca. on Ygacio Valley road and saw no employees and the store was a wreck. Went to the fish section looking for aquarium bubblers. Looked around and nobody asked me if I needed help because there wasn't anyone around. Saw I walked around and found this yellow haired kid who looked miserable and when I asked him about aquarium bubblers he looked reluctant to even look at me or acknowledge me. So after an uncomfortable few seconds wondering if this weirdo kid is going to even look at me or help me he slowly walks over to the aquarium stuff, looks at the fish stuff and says he has no clue what any of the stuff is or does. So I say "okay thanks anyway" and walked out. Went across the street to PetSmart and had a wonderful experience and spent $50 there. Ordered online today and this store filled the order incorrectly. We did not get all our items. We ordered on petco dot com. We called and were told it was not their problem because door dash does the deliveries. We never knew we were ordering from a third party. Going back to review our order it onky says Petco. They agreed calling our bank was the best option so we put in a dispute. The problem is we lost a lot of our Petco points now which is also unfair. I've been shopping here for several months now and always have a great experience! I shop mostly in the aquatics department. Rhiannon is always super helpful and friendly! I always look for her when I come in. The rest of the staff is awesome too. I talked to a AJ about fish disease and water quality for about 30 minutes. On another occasion, the manager, Aaron, helped me out with a faulty betta tank and made it right, I was so happy to get everything I wanted and more! Don't ever use Vetco for Rabies Vaccines. They will give you a certificate in your email. But they won't give you an tag. The misinformed vet tech told me that they ran out of tags and to call the Vetco Customer Service. When I talked to Vetco customer service they said they weren't authorized to give me a tag and no other reason.....Then I called Vetco back and the second person said they weren't authorized in Calif to give tags and I would have to go to the county with the certificate to get a tag. What a hassle, this never happened at PetVet in Oakland which is also a walk-in clinic. Will never use Vetco again. In fact the whole experience really makes me not want to shop at Petco either! read more

I have been coming in for my saltwater fish supplies for years and never had any problems with customer service in the early afternoon, but today the lady who was in the store was very rude! Unfortunately unacceptable! My 15 year old daughter, my mom and I came to the store with the intention of looking for a cat to adopt and I was asking for help, this cashier lady was head down texting on her phone while she knew that I was standing there waiting and when she finally finished I asked her if we could see a cat and her response was are you sure you are going to adopt tonight, otherwise I am not going to take the cat out, while I process her nasty attitude, my daughter responded "well, we wanted to see the cat with the intention of adopting and seeing its personality" to what she responded, "I won't take the cat out if you are not adopting it tonight!" It's 6:45pm the store is open why the ugly attitude??? So I told my daughter, ok, let's go somewhere else and this lady had the audacity to say - yes, you better leave!! I'm sorry but does the manager of the store check the security cameras in this place??? this lady was so disrespectful and I felt like she was looking for a confrontation that I would never get into. Do not ever go here for grooming. They shaved my dog down to practically his bare skin, he has razor burn under his tail, and to top it off they "forgot" to call me to let me know my dog was finished being groomed. He was done for over an hour and it was taking so long I finally went there to check since no one EVER answers the phone. The groomers and workers all just laughed and were like oh sorry I thought so and so called. I won't even go there to buy anything. No one is ever at the register either anyway. Looking at all the reviews for the North Walnut Creek store on Ygnacio Valley Rd. and the bad grooming reviews I do believe the reviews were from past months. There is a new grooming manger at this location and she is wonderful. Tia is her name. A few months ago after taking our older dog to the California St. Walnut Creek groomer 8 times with no issues until we we got stuck with a replacement for Charli who was out on disability. After an hour there we got a call to pick up our dog because she could not be groomed, AND NEVER COME BACK. I'm not one to give up but today we needed her to be groomed and took her to the North WC Petco and she met Tia. Not only did Tia do a great job with no issues but also had our girl in and out in record time. NO ISSUES and we were told she is welcome back for another grooming when needed. It's all about caring and experience. The other Petco seems like a factory production line with little caring. All about attitude. Give Tia a try. She is caring and an excellent groomer. read more

I have brought my mini dachshund here a number of times for a cut and wash. The previous few times her hair was cut much shorter than requested, which I could live with, however after my current experience we will not be returning. I had an appointment for the previous day which they called me the morning of and advised they were down a groomer and needed to reschedule me to the next day. I show up today and their system is down and even though i had all the paper work, appointment confirmation, shot paperwork, etc. they still refused to service me after driving the 15 minutes to the facility. All I was offered was an apology and a potential reschedule for later that week. After wasting so much of my time much more should have been done to rectify the situation and it was not. read more

the staff here have no real concern for their animals. I adopted a guinea pig who's hair was falling out, hand atrophied rear leg and his teeth fell out about 4 days after I brought him home. I took him to the vet and they told me it was malnutrition and neglect. Petco told me he was 6 months, but I know better... and the vet put him about a month old at his visit and that was 2 weeks after I adopted him. Petcos response? You can return him. We can vet him, and IF he makes it or doesn't cost too much you readopt him in 6-8 weeks. I can't fall in love with a living creature, and then just nonchalantly return him when he was obviously ill before I adopted him. What faith do I have that he would even be vetted and not just put down? one employee there seemed caring (but she left the week following this) and they have a decent stock of items for pets. read more

Dog owners please note that even if your dog is scheduled for a set time to be groomed, they might be put in a cage so that the groomer can go to lunch. I just experienced an unfortunate situation where I was scheduled for 430, took off early from work to get her there in time, To have the groomer turnaround put her in a crate and say that she was going to lunch. I don't have a problem with her taking her lunch, I have a problem with the way they treat the animals. If she was scheduled for a 430 lunch, my dog should've been scheduled for after her return so She didn't have to sit in a cage until the groomer came back from lunch. I took my dog here for the Vetco clinic to get update on her shots. Yes, they are conveniently close and priced well but they are painfully S-L-O-W. We called before coming here to confirm the Vetco clinic was open 10-3, she confirmed twice that they are. Visited at 12:20p.m. and they said they were out to lunch until 1:00 p.m. So annoying they didn't tell me, I would have come before or after their lunch. One person ahead of us and it took well over 45 minutes only to tell us we had to come back the next day or another time to finish the test. Why didn't the moron lady tell us that as soon as we checked in? We would have come back another day. So I came back the next morning and one person was ahead of me so I waited over 30 minutes to finally get the heartworm test done that should have been done the day before. It was an hour before I got out of there! Super nice people but their assistants could use some training on being efficient and inform the customer better. read more

This is for the Grooming department at this store location! I've taken my pet here many times for a grooming. I usually book a month in advance because they get booked up fast. The morning of my pet's appt, they left me a voicemail saying my groomer called in sick and they will call me the next day about rebooking my pet's appt within the next day or so. I tried calling them back many times and no one answers, I left several voicemails within the course of the week and I have never gotten a call back even though the voice message says they'll call you back in a few hours, THAT'S A LIE. How do you not follow up with your clients? This is very unprofessional and I will NEVER return to this Petco location again! And I definitely will be taking this issue to corporate. read more

After being concerned about the conditions of the betta fish selection at the Petsmart just across the street from this location, I was hoping that Petco might be a better option and decided to check it out. Much to my dismay, the conditions of the bettas at Petco were significantly, VISIBLY worse. While I'm aware that pet shops typically sell bettas out of plastic cups (a terrible practice), at this Petco location I counted AT LEAST FIVE betta fish that had already been dead in their cups for God knows how long. On top of that, many other bettas showed visible signs of illness such as swim bladder disease (severe bloating, inability to swim straight or maintain buoyancy, and/or erratic swimming patterns that are not typical for healthy betta fish). This store also appears to be grossly understaffed. So, in summary, Petco is no better than Petsmart, but is arguably worse (at least for betta fish). The fish here are kept in awfully unhealthy conditions, and the store keeps visibly ill fish on the shelves for purchase. DO NOT BUY YOUR FISH FROM HERE!!!!!!!! read more

I was in this store today. As I walked in, I saw that none of the grooming employees were wearing masks. They are in an enclosed space, no windows open that I could see, and I can't speak to the ventilation. Clearly, the employees were not complying with the store's signage that states everyone has to be masked while in the store. I asked a store employee why the employees were not wearing masks, she stated "They don't have to." Come on people, we are a year into COVID. All the employees in the store need some education on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Where is the leadership in this store? Visited this store for dog grooming. Set up the appointment and waited several weeks for it, when arrive there the day of the appointment they say my dog is too big. I clearly stated the dog's breed and it was not the first time the dog was in this store for grooming. The manager instead of trying to fix the situation was blaming me for a mistake they made. She kept coming back that I had made a mistake. I stated my dog's breed can never be a small dog. Very clean and well organized. It's in the very busy Orchards shopping center, so I would avoid coming here during busy hours! For example, it's right next to Safeway. Anyway, back to Petco. I saw two people working there around 4pm on a Tuesday. They were very friendly and helpful. For such a small place, they seem to have a lot, however, I am taking one star away because I called ahead to make sure they had a certain type and size of dog food. The person I spoke to said they had plenty on the floor and then some in the back. So he made it seem like there was no chance they'd run out while I was on my way. When I got there, the bag they apparently did put aside for me anyway, was taken by someone else? And was nowhere to be found. I ended up having to buy an obscenely priced 6 pound bag, for $17, instead of the 30 pound bag I wanted to get. Rhiannon was very nice and apologetic. I think they might need to work on a few kinks, like why did the one person tell me they have tons left in the back? Anyway, in general though, it was a good experience considering what happened! Petco uses too man many chemicals with their feeder fish and when I put them in normal water and mix their bags with the last bag from the previous bags of feeder fish it kills them all and I have to change my tank water and filter every time I get a new batch of feeder fish. It's not the first time this has happened. I'm tired of purchasing fish here only To lose them Before I get to feed them to my pet. I spoke with Gillian In the fish department and she wouldn't sell me 2 koi fish after I explained it was to feed to my pet. That's a 30 dollar sale loss to this business. I left unsatisfied with my bag of feeder fish and no koi. This was 2 days ago. I'm at home now staring at a tank of feeder fish with half of them dead floating head at the filter. This is a review for the grooming. Yikes. DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE. We came because we had a Petco gift card. We buy the Pupster's food on Amazon and he has tons of toys so the only option we really had was grooming. We decided to book an appointment for his upcoming barkday. Grooming was bad. 1. They did NOT shave under his paws. 2. There are also stray hairs underneath his chin. He just didn't look good. I could have done the same thing with a pair of sheers myself. He looked somewhat groom but def. not professionally done. We had to bring him back the next day since they missed all the extra steps in grooming a dog, aka shaving the paw pads and evening out some parts of his fur. Excellent customer service! Megan was incredible. She was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about cats-- food, special diets, training and more! She spent a significant amount of time helping me. She addressed my concerns that I was having with my new kitty, who I actually adopted from the Petco downtown, and she did it with ease! She was, perhaps, the most knowledgeable Petco associate who has ever helped me...in my life--which is saying a lot since my Petco experiences span over 10 years easily and probably 25 different locations within 6 different cities. Anyway, I'm rambling. Also, I want to recognize "Kat" (I believe that's what I heard another associate call her). She helped me at the checkout and also assisted me with the ID engraving machine. She was extremely friendly, patient, and helpful! Bottom line -- to the higher ups at Petco, if you ever read this, Megan / Meghan, as well as Kat, made my experience 5 stars! Also since I knew olive didn't like the express dry they made sure to only towel dry her and added it in her file for future references. I was in the area for something unrelated and decided to stop in here to see if they had my kitty's food. I perused the small animal sections since I have rats and a foster mouse. I was heart broken to see the poor little female mice they have are all sick! They have hunched backs and look thin, one of them sat hunched on top of the house with it's head down. Why are these poor babies on display and not getting treated!!!!! This is why buying small animals from these big corporate stores is terrible, it supports the poor breeding and neglect of our smallest and most innocent of furry friends.
