On one hand, this store generally carries most of the items we need for our dogs and the staff is friendly and helpful. Petco also has a great customer loyalty program that offers substantial discounts and other promotions. On the other hand ... I don't know if it's a chain-wide issue, but this store has not been maintaining inventory like they used to. We feed our guys Natural Balance Limited Ingredient with "wholesome" grain, but their stock of various sizes and varieties has been thinning out. Last month, this store was sold out of a particular Kong toy. A helpful cashier called the warehouse and arranged for the items to be shipped directly to us. I received an order confirmation email that same day. The next day, I received a notice that the order was delayed. Then, one week later, I was informed that the order was canceled. I did not cancel it and no explanation was given (I was not charged). Last week, I received an email coupon whose subject line stated "Unleash Savings! $50 off just for you," but the actual coupon read "$40 off" (see screenshot). I pointed out the discrepancy to the cashier. When he scanned the coupon, it came up as invalid altogether. He spent considerable time and effort trying to get the bar code to work, but in the end he summoned the manager, who subtracted $50 manually. Petco needs to get its act together. read more

I don't often write reviews, but everything felt a bit strange at this location. Today, my wife drove there with our two kids to buy a hamster, even though it's about 10 miles from our home because the location near us closed down (and by the way, the employees there were on a much higher level). When they asked to see the hamster, the employee said store policy did not allow that. My wife then explained that she wasn't going to touch or move the hamster, she just wanted to look at it because they were all hiding. After that, the employee asked whether we had a proper place to keep it. My wife said yes, because we had a hamster living with us for several years (3-4 years), and we had also bought it from Petco together with everything it needed. She even roughly showed the size of the hamster cage we have, but he said it was too small and that the hamster would be uncomfortable. After that, my wife asked to speak with the manager, and the employee walked away somewhere. She waited a few minutes and then went to the register to ask for the manager again. The store manager came over and said something along the lines of the employee thinking the hamster would not be comfortable, but then said that she actually could sell it to us. As strange as this may sound, by the time this whole discussion with the employees was over, the kids no longer wanted the hamster -- they just wanted to leave the store as quickly as possible. I know there are still probably lingering supply chain issues, but every time I go here they only have a 2-3 cans of the cat food I typically buy, which is frustrating when my cat goes through 2 cans a day. I don't want to be coming here every day to buy food. I've started just ordering it on Chewy and then coming here to buy a can or two to fill the gap before it's delivered if I run low. I also dislike how everything is more expensive in store than on their own site (Petsmart is the same way) -- depending on which canned food I'm getting, it's anywhere from 10 cents to 40 cents cheaper online per can. They will do price adjustments, which is nice, but the last two times I've been here, they did it in an odd way and the math didn't actually come out to be correct. I still overpaid by like 50 cents. (Not a big deal one time, but over time that adds up). I no longer bother price adjustments if I'm only buying a can or two because the annoyance isn't worth saving 10 cents, but when I bought my cat's former food here and would buy a case at a time, the per can price difference was substantial (like, $5+ cheaper using the online price). And it's not their fault, but their parking lot is a nightmare because of their location, especially their placement within the strip mall. They are located at the end of a "road" that is the entry to the shopping center, so there isn't a lot specifically for Petco. Instead, there's one on on side that's always packed because of Home Goods, or on the other side it's Ulta/Nordstrom Rack/etc., which is also super packed. It's a convenient location in terms of being off of Golf road, but parking can be a major pain, especially if you're trying to run here over your lunch break or after work. read more

Our pup loves Joy. She's done a great job grooming our dog and she's the only reason we go back. I give 4 vs 5 stars is that the website is a challenge and finding a human to speak with is impossible. Grooming appointments are far too hard to get. The "membership" is pricey and one would think should make appointments a bit easier to get within a month of trying to book, not just during prime hours...literally any appt. read more

Will someone please adopt the sweet little cats from St. Sophia's Forgotten Felines who are stuck in the too-small cages up front? I stopped by this Petco recently and the plaintive meows were just killing me. I guess they're trying to do a good thing by giving shelter cats high visibility, but the cats really need to be taken out of those tiny cages to play several times a day at least. And more importantly, they need responsible humans to adopt them. Decent but not fantastic selection at this Petco -- I didn't get exactly what I wanted, but I got what I needed. The staffers were all friendly without being pushy when I was there. Also, I have ordered items for delivery from this Petco and it was a convenient, pleasant shopping experience. This particular store features a staff that's knowledgeable unpleasant to deal with. The products in stock are not always consistent, which is the reason we don't shop here more frequently. This location, because it's a bit smaller, only carries cat & dog supplies. Even though it's a small location it feels cozy. They always have new items based on the season or holidays. They also sell high-quality pet foods. They had the cutest and adorable leashes, costumes and collars for our dogs and cats, too, than any other pet shop. They also do services like vaccines, grooming for our fury babies. The staff was fabulous. I had a debt card gift card that could only work on line. Since I don't order much on line I asked if they could walk me through it. They were fabulous. The worked with me in the store and I made my purchases. I will definitely be returning. I have taken my Aussie to many groomers over the last 12 years - the good ones have told me you never use a razor on an Aussie. i had no one call me before they butchered my dog. My dog was returned once from a dog bath there with cigarette ashtray ashes deeply impeded in his paws- we don't smoke- I had to get him a second bath somewhere else to get the stench out. The second time I tried them they shaved a line straight down my dog. He looks awful. read more

I really like this Petco. My boyfriend and I always come in here to look at the adoptable kittens in the back of the store, which is awesome because most stores do not have dogs or cats. I have never had my dog groomed or anything here so I cannot comment on that, but the workers are all very nice here (from my experiences at least) and they have super cute chinchillas that you can buy here. The animals all have pretty clean cages and habitats, and if you ask to pet some of the animals, they are usually pretty nice about it. Everything in this store is pretty clean and organized, and the workers are personable and helpful. I normally do not need any help here because we kinda just go straight to the back of the store to see the kittens and then walk around to either buy a toy for my dog or look at the chinchillas, but my experiences here have been nothing but good. read more

Spent a good bit of time explaining it and going through the petco app with me to make sure it all worked. At the register she was a dynamo; she really knows her craft. Went into this Petco to look at a cat to adopt. I saw Queenie and another cat which I thought wanted to hug me, instead, he jumped right on me to escape. LOL Even though I didn't adopt at that moment I wasn't rushed. They answered all my question regarding the adoption. The volunteer was new and had to refer to another staffer for info. They provided me information to look at additional cats at St. Sophia's Forgotten Felines. I was walked around the store and the selection of cat accessories was really good. Saw several things that I wanted to buy. Unfortunately, I didn't adopt, because I didn't have my AWWW moment, I will come back to look at more cats soon. read more

This is a wonderful Petco! While not as flashy as the one on Clybourn the awesome staff makes up for it. I'm in there at least once a week working on socializing one of my dogs and the employees have been great helping me work with him. Lyla is a gem of a groomer! She's done a fantastic job with 2 of my Poms. They smell amazing, look fantastic and aren't stressed at all being there. It's obvious Lyla takes great care of them. She even fully scissor cut my big dude and he looked spectacular! I learned today they'll groom Rabies exempt dogs with a letter of exemption, unlike Petsmart, which makes me really happy! Lyla will be seeing my old man for a groom soon. Their grooming prices are excellent as well. The fact that my 2 nervous rescue pups do so well with Lyla keeps me coming back! read more

Spent $90 and my dog looks terrible. I know many owners may say their dogs are brushed but my dog was truly brushed and not matted. He had some small knots on his bum but they shaved him to the skin, in the winter in Chicago. His face trim was also bad and his ears look like they just hacked off the bottom. My previous experience with Eric was amazing but the female groomer has made my dog look completely unrecognizable. read more

I too had a run in with Jessica. I went in there to buy some dog food and there were three coupons. One I thought was buy two and get one free. Angry Jessica thought so too. She tried to ring the coupon and it didn't take. She was able take another coupon for 5.00 off. Well I am not buying three bags without a good coupon. So I only bought the one bag. She said I don't know why it doesn't work. I ask if we can find out why. She refused. The attitude started here. Then her tone went snotty and she stated trying to upsell me. I didn't want to deal with her so I didn't answer her. She proceeded to repeat the questions louder and louder. Finally I said enough. She threatened to throw me out of the store. I had no problem leaving. To the store owner/manager. I think this employee has some sort of mental issue. She goes from ok to nuclear in a matter of seconds. So your choice is simple. Keep getting more reviews like this one with Jessica's name attached to it, get her some psychological help, or cut her loose. I hope you care enough to write a response. This review is specific to the grooming service. I brought my 9 month puppies for a haircut and grooming. Everything looked fine but I noticed, later in the evening, both were acting very unusual. Both were continuously licking at themselves and seemed overall uncomfortable. We inspected them and found scabs and sores on the bellies and both of their penises. They had scabs on their ears and faces. They have been very uncomfortable and acting depressed for a few days now. Do not take your dogs here. Stick to the mom n pap groomers. Will never go to a petco/petsmart (one in the same for all I care) again for grooming. read more

So far so good with our new puppy. Grooming and training has been excellent with excellent prices as well. Since getting our new puppy in January. Caroline our puppy trainer is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and patient. She goes beyond the call and really cares about you and the dogs. The groomers have been great as well. Customer services rocks at this location. I was running late for a "21 year old puppy party" (my friends dog was turning 3, what better reason to hang out) and I go into this store to get some items. I found some treats and I wanted a gift card so I go to the register and the cashier asks me if I wanted a more festive card. I said yeah, so she was running around with me looking for a nicer card. My review is mostly about the grooming services -- This is a smaller store with a very small grooming area, compared to other Petco's I've visited. In fact, I walked right past the grooming area (which was at the very front of the store) without even noticing it! The sales staff was very friendly, though. In fact, a salesperson noticed me looking lost and directed to the correct area. I was initially a bit worried because I felt the groomer was being rather aggressive with the pup she was shaving when I walked in. Nothing report-worthy, she just didn't seem very caring. I know this sounds silly, but I want to see groomers that seem to actually enjoy working with animals! Try comforting the little dog that is freaking out on your table, or acknowledging my pup when we walk in. Since my dog always does well with grooming and is fine with strangers, I decided to go ahead with the bath and nail clipping I had planned. I'm not a fussy dog owner, by any means, but I didn't get the impression that the girl working there had a ton of experience with grooming, so I'm not sure I'd take my dog there for a haircut (or even for another nail trim... makes me nervous) in the future. Still, I don't have any specific complaints about this particular wash or nail trim. For an easy and convenient bath, I would maybe return. In the meantime, I'll be looking for other options. read more

I have to comment that I recently stopped in (12/30/2013) and found all of the employees to be working that day to be really polite. Like over the top- did you guys just get yelled at??-polite. Exhibit A: I was trying to locate a specific type of wet food for my cat. The employee first was like "I am so sorry but I don't think we carry it." Then he found it and was like "I am so sorry- we do carry it." "I am so sorry I found it right here and told you that we did not carry it." "I am so sorry". I told him it was totally fine and he didn't have to apologize at all! "I am so sorry! Have a great day!" Exhibit B: I was checking out at the counter and one of the associates was cleaning up the dog treat area. "I am so sorry to keep you waiting". Um...I waited like barely 30 seconds! That was not waiting. The employees were really polite and I will definitely come back for my shopping needs. I do want to note they have a great selection of natural dog products. I was feeding my dog Beneful prepared meals for the longest time (it looks like real food with real peas and rice inside) but discovered how crappy it really is (mostly by-products and corn)... So I switched it up and this Petco carries Blue Buffalo and all of the other "holistic" and "organic" types of dog food at comparable prices! I just want my dog to be healthy and if food plays a part of it? Then my best friend should get the best! Minus one star because they have live animals and I don't support mill breeders or the small animal trade. read more

She always shares tips and helpful advice for our dogs, she even went out of her way to help pick out food and brushes for our new puppy! She is a great help to us and she's very sweet to our dogs. Awful awful service and terrible manager. I never ever leave service comments, but after being here I must say that they are terrible in customer service. I purchased a grooming kit from a different Petco, and they said that I could return it if I don't like it. Before going to this Petco, I called beforehand to make sure it wouldn't be an issue returning it to a different store. I also wanted to make sure I could receive cash for the refund since I didn't have the same credit card I purchased it with(my wife used her card). I arrived to the store and they weren't even sure what to tell me. I tried returning it and the process started and then once I asked to receive cash for it, they said that they do not give cash back. This was 5 minutes after they told me over the phone that they do give back cash refunds. Ridiculous! They urged me that if I wanted to get my money back and return the item, I should go to the original Petco to return it. I mentioned that I drove 15 minutes to their store just because they said it wouldn't be an issue and she didn't care at all. I also told the manager that I am a rewards member and I will never shop at Petco ever again and she laughed in my face. What a crappy experience!!! Never go here, awful manager. Her name is Liz and she does not manage properly. Customer service should be doing anything they can to retain customers while all she did was push me away. Terrible. read more

I came into this store for the first time yesterday and was expecting a normal Petco visit. I was hoping to get my cat a cat tree and also some food. I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed help. I said yes that I was wanting to take a look at their cat trees. After some hesitation, the girl walked me over to the aisle where they were and said to let them know if I needed further help. I thanked her and started perusing. Next thing I hear some screaming from the front between a customer and the person I believe to be the manager. The customer was very irate but I couldn't understand what happened. I kept shopping when I realized the price of all cat trees were $30 more in store than online. Shipping is free but they have an odd disclaimer that they use a third party shipper that only delivers curbside and that you have to make arrangements to move the item from the curb. That's fine I suppose but I live in an apartment so I don't have a curb. So I got some canned food for my cat instead and went to the front. I asked the cashier why there was such a big difference in price from online to in store for cat trees and she said it was because the online store doesn't have to worry about paying employees like the stores do. Ummmm...???? Products don't pop up automatically online [I know this as I'm a Web Editor for a Publishing Company]. I then told her about the weird shipping issue. She said that was odd and then asked the apparent irritable manager. The manager just said nope never heard of that. Nope! The cashier told her I had just read it off their site and the manager kept saying nope that's not right. So apparently I can't read. I just told the cashier that I would think about it and walked out. Very odd experience. The manager seems like a total b**ch is my main complaint. When managers are like that, there will not be a good work morale and therefore not a good environment. I have no problem with the stock of their goods or even the prices. I read a review for the cat tree I wanted and apparently someone wrote in there the same issue of $30 more for cat trees in store. That seems to be Petco issue. But I didn't like the environment. I'll stick to going to the Petco or PetSmart near my work in Vernon Hills. Much nicer and not b**chy! read more

Lyla is absolutely the best dog groomer ever! I have brought my puppy Addison to her every month for almost a year (her entire life) and I always get her back relaxed and clean and looking good. I really like this store. Everything is clean and well organized. The products such as cat trees are in good condition. Items are easy to find as well. Additionally their customer service is great! There is always someone ready willing and able to help. They seem to really care about their customers and their pets and are very knowledgeable not only about their products but pet care in general. And if they don't know the answer they will find someone who does. I also love that they frequently seem to remember repeat customers and will ask about your pet. I'm a first time cat owner and it's so nice to have such a great resource in the area. Highly recommend. read more

The Vetco clinic is a scam. They claim to have less expensive vaccinations for your pet. First you approach the "tech" or someone in scrubs who has an iPad and offers things you didn't ask for or want. They offered a Healthy Cat wellness exam. I told them I just wanted the Rabies shot. They scribble on a microscopic form and send you on a line. The Vet in this case Dr. Marsha Guzik (Probably a fake name) upsets you and loudly lectures everyone. So I thought ok, instead of just $38 for the 3 year Rabies shot I'll upgrade to the $59 wellness exam that includes a Feline 3-in-1 one year, a feline Leukemia one year, and a de- worm medication in addition to the Rabies. So I thought. I was mislead into thinking it was all included. No. They charge extra for the rabies. Ten dollars for the shot, which by the way said "one year" on the receipt and $19.99 for the Cook County "3 year" tag. Somehow the whole thing came to $88. The "Vet" is baffling you with her BS Lecture so your head is spinning. Meanwhile there was no examination. The receipt says "Unable to Exam" which really means "Never attempted to exam". Instead this "Vet" just reached in the Cat carrier and gave all these shots. Then some guy is running around giving out the final bills. It's all smoke and mirrors and they're just trying to rush people through and confuse everyone into paying more than they originally intended. Then they act like you're crazy when you complain that you have been overcharged. It's a scam. You're doing this to save money by going to the regular Vet but you end up being strong armed into getting overcharged. I lost money actually because they never examined my cat. read more

I took my 8lb chihuahua in for grooming. I had booked it on the app. It was to be $26. They were not welcoming. It was supposed to be a 45 minute visit, according to their email Followup. There was no place to sit and wait. I was offered to go on a shopping spree, and that she would be ready at 5:30. Her appointment was at 4:00. I went home and came back a little after 5. I sat in my car and they finally called at 6:00. I went inside and was given a folded paper with her name on it. Went to the cashier, and saw a 2.99 surcharge for materials used. She's 8 pounds! I asked why I wasn't told about this until I was paying the bill. He was flustered and said it was posted on the wall, on the app too. No. It wasn't. Asked for a tip. I gave her $2 and told him to give the surcharge to the groomer. As I was walking in to get my dog, the cashier and groomers were whispering and stopped as I walked in. I walked out of there angry and upset. The way she was holding my tiny chihuahua was ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend Petco to anyone. Terrible experience, and awful customer service. read more

My dog (shih tzu) has been coming to this location for grooming services for approximately 3 years and has never had any issues/concerns. The new grooming manager, Yasmin, is highly disrespectful and unprofessional. Part of being a groomer and working with animals is understanding that you will encounter various types of breeds with different traits and personalities. Yasmin lacks this understanding. My dog went in for full service which included nail trimming. When picking up my dog, Yasmin stated she had difficulty cutting her nails and stated that at our next grooming visit the nail cutting would be free. The next time I took my dog in for grooming services, I confirmed that my dogs nails would be cut. After paying for the services, picking up my dog, and taking her home I realized her nails had not been cut. I contacted Yasmin and she reported that she did not cut my dogs nails like I had paid for and when asking for a refund she refused. I will no longer be bringing my dog to this location due to Yasmins unprofessionalism, lack of respect, and her poor trained skills. read more
