It was a hard decision to let our 4 month old Iggy pup go to someone for 2 full weeks of board and train, especially after falling so hard for our little guy named Kenny Beans! After speaking with several training programs, visiting some, and prayerfully considering what the right choice should be Madi Potts helped make our choice easy. Before we would trust anyone with our little 7.5 lb boy, we had to get a sense of one's heart. My husband and I were not looking for someone who could simply "control dogs" or "make them obey commands". We wanted someone who had a heart for dogs to have better lives with structure, less fear, and longevity due to possibilities that came with what training offered. My first inquiry call with Madi was pretty long, if I recall right. She was patient, understanding of my many questions, and willing to talk as long as I needed to feel she was safe to go to next step with. We started with a 90 min at home training session to see first hand and understand how she would personally be as a trainer with Beans. That training was stressful and also a relief as we believed we found the right person to entrust our boy to. When the day came for him to be picked up, both my husband and I were crying. It wasn't just about trusting a new person to take care of Beans, it was also the resurfaced grief of losing our whippet girl of 11 years just a few months prior. The "what ifs" where overwhelming, but we agreed we were moving forward. Madi also saw our "anguish" if you want to call it that. She quickly said she typically doesn't give an update for the first 24-48 hours but she would update us that evening. To her word, we got a picture of beans at the park and our hearts settled a bit. Throughout the two weeks, Madi was wonderful about keeping us up to date and answering questions as needed or as we annoyed her (lol we might have been a little over the top haha) She never hesitated to share and ensure our boy was learning, and struggling in some areas, but overall doing great. Now that he is back with us, we have already had one of our follow up appointments and are so thankful Madi was who helped us with Beans. He was so happy to see her and made her say goodbye before leaving (even though he was supposed to "stay", lol). Training is still a ongoing work daily, Beans still doesn't love his crate but is accepting he is safe and it's ok to not see us 24/7 (Italian greyhounds are Velcro dogs to the max!) This was an emotional, time, and financial investment that we continue to place priority on. I know many will say do not board and train an Iggy, but for our family, giving him and us the tools to have a successful life together was important. We did our due diligence and don't regret our decision. Actually we are extremely grateful we found Madi and Suburban K9. When she left after our last follow up session she looked at Beans, gave him a scratch and said "I love you". I have no doubt she does, for that I am thankful. We went to them to help our 15 month old Catahoula who had issues with riding in cars and reactivity to other people and dogs. We signed up for their top Board and Train Plus package. After an initial pre screen in home training session, the trainer deemed our pup a good candidate for their Board and Train Plus package (That is a 3 week board and train boot camp program with an initial 2 week intensive, in the trainers home, program and a follow up of 1 week after 12 at home training sessions) I signed up my pup for that based on what they said and we had 2 in-home sessions before the trainer decided that our pup was ready to go to her home for the board and train. We loved the trainer and the 3 in-home lessons, and were excited to have our pup start the Board and Train program. On the 1st night she let me know that our pup was doing ok. 3 days in I got a call that they had a bad night on the 3rd night and that she felt my pup was not relaxed, but was stressed. She said she would give it a couple more days. Then on the 6th day I got a call with her telling me that my pup was not able to concentrate on the training and that board and train was NOT a good fit for my pup and we should just do "in my home" training. They wanted to keep my pup over that night even though they told me my pup was stressed and not doing well.. I asked for them to return my pup that night. They complied and I got my pup back by 8pm that night. This was all well and good, but I told them we would talk about the path forward later. So later we get on a call and discuss what went wrong and what would be the path forward. The trainer insisted that my pup was no longer a good candidate for the board and train program and even though I offered to extend the in-home training session with a goal to get my pup ready for the board and train program. The trainer insisted that this was not possible. I let them know from the start that the reason I went with Suburban K9 was due to their board and train program and if that was not feasible then I saw no path forward. They wanted to convert my Over $6k Board and Train Plus balance to all in-home training sessions over a period of a year. I did not want to commit to such a training program. I then asked for the Board and Train Plus program to be refunded. My pup did not meet any goals we had set for the board and train program. If I was going to move forward with any In home training sessions, I felt they needed to honor their money back guarantee and at the least refund the 6 days of the failed board and train sessions. They refused, they initially only refunded 15 days of board and train and 10 in home sessions that were not used. Because of this I decided that Suburban K9 was not a good fit for me and my dog. So my major issue with Suburban K9 was the fact they initially refused to honor their money back guarantee. They talk very confidently about their Board and Train Boot camp. Alex Bassett was the trainer for our overgrown pup Kobe. Kobe is a 6 month old mastador (English mastiff/Labrador) who weighs 85lbs and will be over 150lbs when fully grown. We knew we had to get him trained and Alex didn't disappoint. In our first meet and greet, Alex jotted down areas we wanted to focus on with Kobe's training. She was also very attentive to learn our lifestyle and Kobe's boundaries when she visited our house such that Kobe's training was tailored to make him succeed. Our top three priorities were to make Kobe heel on walks, reduce barking and nipping, and recall. I'm happy to say that after 2 weeks of boarding with Alex, Kobe was fully trained on these three asks and some of the basic commands were more structured (sit, down, stay). We are very pleased with the training and the follow up session that Alex has provided. She has given us feedback and pointers on questions we may have. I waited quite a few days to let emotions level before writing this. I have asked for a refund. Let me start by saying, this review gets more than 1 star because customer service was exceptional! Very impressed on that end. Now we had an in home trainer come. She stated the "foundation of this company" was "corrective behavior" and if we didn't like this we should consider other training. I had mentioned I preferred positive reinforcement, especially for a new puppy without behavior issues. In fairness, we absolutely did get the refund. Also she was very open that if we didn't feel comfortable with anything we could stop or consider training elsewhere, that I appreciated. She encouraged saying "No" consistently. She said use of prong collars and tugging on the leash would be recommended. Most shocking is she used scruffing or scruff training. This done improperly can seriously injure an animal. My partner is in the pet industry, and multiple trainers/vet techs were shocked at this and highly encouraged seeking training elsewhere, as scruffing is outdated and can cause behavioral issues and injury. She also would put the puppy on her side and hold her body and face there, saying she needs to be in this vulnerable position. The pup hated it. And that pup lays belly up with me when relaxed, I don't think being vulnerable with me is an issue. She's a new puppy! She also encouraged walking the puppy over an hour to get her tired. My puppy was 9 weeks then... her growth plates haven't fully formed and too much walking would severely damage and cause long term issues. Months of age x 5 is the amount of time walking, twice per day. So about 2 months x 5 is 10. So a 10 minute walk in the am and the pm is recommend and that is it. Luckily I had asked my vet about this, but she should not have recommended something she was not fully knowledgeable about. Now when I questioned this, she said always ask your vet, that I appreciated it. She's the trainer, I'd expect her to know more than I though. Overall, her sessions with my pup were harsh and completely lacking of any benefit. We had almost purchased the 2 week sending the pup to be with a trainer... thank goodness we didn't! Now again, to each their own. My goal in this review is to provide insight I wish I had known prior... especially if I had gone with the 2 weeks in home training. That we experienced harsh corrective behavior and scruffing. I do not speak to their other trainers or the company, as I do not know if this is their training methods in total. But I want other new pup/dog owners to be aware of my experience, as if I had known this prior, I would never had come to them for training. read more

We recently adopted a Shih-tzu Lhasa Apso mix who Is terrified of men (would snap at my husband on occasion) yet she just needed some help. I love small businesses so I try to be fair. I would just like to say that the type of training that I received did not help my dog. It was arsh and the dog did not respond good. They put a prong collar on and yanked him quite a few times until he snapped. After the trainer left I duplicated what the trainer wanted him to do with treats and he did all of them in 10 minutes. There wasn't any aggression. I think it's important to find a trainer who focuses on positive training. Don't get me wrong sometimes the dogs do need corrections but this was not a good experience for myself or the dog. Please educate yourself on the different types of training out there. I was also told that I would need the $5000 package after the dog snapped and to be honest with you I felt like they were taking advantage of me after seeing the dog snap. I was easy prey... We have an 8-month old Irish Terrier who is a really sweet puppy, but he was having some trouble with basic manners and following direction. Typical puppy stuff: he was running all over the furniture, jumping on everyone, gnawing on hands and fingers, eating shoes, clothes, and pillows, trying to eat people food, chasing birds/squirrels/rabbits, pulling really hard on the leash during walks, barking loud in the house, eating trash and poop off the ground, growling at other dogs on the street, etc. We took advantage of a spring break trip to enroll our pup into the Suburban K9 Board & Train Boot Camp. This is where one of their professional trainers takes your dog into their own home for 2 weeks. Your dog lives in their house with his/her family and other pets. While there, your dog will be taught how to behave in a more appropriate manner by learning how to listen to commands, and he'll be much more respectful to you and your home. An added bonus is that for hyperactive puppies like ours, they come home much more calm because they've learned new behaviors and have new outlets for their mental and physical energy. The cost was a bit of a sticker shock at first, but when we considered that we'd have this dog in our family for at least 15+ years, we decided it was worth the investment in getting him properly trained by professionals. After booking the training, SK9 emailed us a thorough questionnaire to prepare a specialized training program for our dog. A couple of weeks later, Nelson arrived at our house at the scheduled day and time. While at our house, he spent extra time getting to know our dog and asking us a bunch of questions about his behavior, things we wanted to focus on, and explained the way they were planning to train him. He then took him to his house and we went on our trip. After 2 weeks, our dog came home and was a completely different dog. He no longer pulls hard on the leash. He walks perfectly right next to my knee, and he utilizes a lot of mental energy on trying to keep pace with me during walks. He also learned to sit, down, stay, place, and free. He no longer eats poop or trash off the ground. He doesn't chase squirrels or birds anymore. Whenever he's around other dogs, he's much more mellow and doesn't try to attack and growl at them. He's still interested in what we're eating, but he will now leave us alone without trying to jump on the table and steal our food. He doesn't bite our hands anymore, even though we can tell he wants to, he just knows better now. Overall, he's just a much more respectable and calm dog, which works better for everyone. Don't get me wrong, he's still very sweet and full of fun, so don't worry about them taking this away. Your dog will just learn that there's a time and place for play time. As an added bonus, the trainer will come back to your home twice in the weeks after your dog comes home. This is to ensure that your family is keeping-up with the training and that your dog isn't forgetting what he learned. They will also help you address any new issues that you might be concerned about. Also, our trainer has been incredibly good about immediately responding to any emailed questions I've had about my dog, and how to train or correct his behavior. Several people in our neighborhood have noticed a significant improvement in our dog's behavior and they've asked where we got him trained. I've owned 8 dogs through-out the past 28 years and been to 5 different obedience classes and at least half a dozen additional trainers for basic obedience to serious dog aggression issues. Matt is by far the best dog trainer. Not only for the methods he uses and the results he obtains, but also for the tone he sets from the start, whether its in a class or in your home for a private lesson (and I've had both). I also had the pleasure of working closely with him when I was involved with a local rescue organization and was able to convince them to run their problem dogs through Matt's training to make them more adoptable. I was able to sit in on many different training sessions to address different problems and Matt always has an answer to a problem...guaranteed. Additionally, I had to avail myself of a Board and Train for one of our family dogs and I can attest to the fact that you WILL get back a completely trained dog and whatever the issue was -- whether it was fear or aggression or something else -- that problem will have been resolved. One cautionary note: if you as the owner are not willing or are unable to spend a considerable amount of time in keeping up the training, you probably shouldn't waste your time/;money on it. At least not if the issue is dog aggression. The reason being that the follow-up and follow-through by you is just as important as the training that Matt gives the dog to break the cycle. And what is required of the owner is a daily committment to getting that dog out to meet new dogs...something that can be problematic for various reasons (weather, health, etc...) I only know of one other person in the Chicagoland area that I would consider on the same level as Matt -- and that is the person who trained him...so depending on where you live, those are the only two trainers I recommend wholeheartedly. read more

After our puppy (lab/boxer mix) literally ate most of our couch, I started to research dog trainers, because I was obviously not doing a good job. I cannot even express how extremely nervous I was to send my dog away to a stranger for training. I was so nervous that he would return and not be our lovey, cuddly, puppy any longer. After I met our trainer, Lenny, I felt more reassured that I was doing the right thing. He put me at ease and was very sweet with my puppy. Throughout the process, Lenny kept me up to date on his progress and reassured me that our puppy was doing well. To my absolute amazement, after the 2 week boot camp, our pup came back with the same sweet and loving personality, but would actually follow commands and listen better than my kids. I was also very happy to see that my puppy really loved Lenny, which to me meant that he was not mistreated by Lenny during the training. Since our puppy's training (a year ago), he has not chewed anything, never needs to be crated when we are not home, can be trusted almost all of the time to be outside with no leash, and is by far the best trained dog on our block. In addition to the training Lenny did with my pup at his home, Lenny comes out to our house periodically for "refreshers," which is extremely helpful. I grew up having dogs and I always thought they were well trained. But, after having Lenny train my puppy, I realize that I was wrong. I had no idea that a dog could be so obedient. WELL BEYOND BASIC TRAINING!! The talent and patience displayed by the staff at Suburban K9, and in particular Mike Simmons, is nothing short of amazing. I would strongly recommend that anyone who has a dog contact them. They work wonders with even the most difficult of pets. I called to schedule an in-home training session based on the positive Yelp reviews. My wife & I have had several dogs in the past but this was the first time we had a puppy with 3 kids at home. Our Berner was angel outside the house and at puppy class but was quite a handful in the house with the 3 kids. He would get very wound up around the kids resulting in a lot of rough play and mouthing causing the kids to be a bit timid around him. Matt Wylos came out to the house and was able to see the puppy's behavior around the kids. He spent a great deal of time listening to our concerns, answering our questions and teaching us how to incorporate our puppy into the rest of the family. We worked really hard on the training Matt showed us and by the time he came out for our 2nd in home training 2 weeks later our puppy was like a different dog around the kids and they were no longer timid around him. Matt's training techniques are in between the praise, praise, praise/treat, treat, treat and the harsh no nonsense training techniques. More importantly, the techniques seemed to just make sense to our dog causing him to pick them up very quickly. You will definitely see progress If you are willing to continue to work hard with your dog after Matt leaves. If you don't have the time to keep up the training I wouldn't waste your money on the in home sessions. read more

I rescued a sweet but uncontrollable lab mix at 3 months old. Although I loved him as soon as I took him home, it became evident after a few weeks that I needed help with training him. I found Suburban K9 online and reached out. I was very impressed with their professionalism and prompt replies to my inquiries that I decided to purchase the two week "boot camp" package. Holly was my trainer and we hit it off from the start. She came and picked him up, worked her magic for a week, and then delivered "Ziggy 2.0" back to me. He was a different (for the better!) dog when he got home! He was completely crate trained (he would have nothing to do with the crate before) and had mastered basic commands sit, stay, come, and down. Holly was tough with me in the follow-up visits. but only because consistency is needed when training a puppy. And Ziggy absolutely adores her. I can't say enough about how fantastic my experience was. HIGHLY recommend...worth every dollar. read more

A few weeks ago, we brought home an adorable 9 week old Boxer/Lab rescue puppy. What we failed to bring home at the same time was puppy lingo and after one session with Mike at our home, I'm thrilled to report that we are all speaking the same language! Our puppy, Saba, responded so great to our first session with Mike, that we decided on the spot to have him return for another 4 in home sessions, to ensure that we don't lose momentum in the progress she's making. It's hard to even recall the horror that was my dog Mylo. A 2 or 3 year old rescue dog from Dead Dog Beach in Puerto Rico, Mylo was completely untrained. The world was his toilet and also his food source. Walks were a nightmare because he couldn't be controlled. He wildly barked at people, cars and animals and tried to eat every branch or piece of garbage in sight. Indoors he could not calm down, sit still or stop barking. After a month of trying in-home training as well as our past experience with dogs I was depressed, angry and planning to give him back. A neighbor seeing my husband with Mylo told him about Suburban K-9 and how after the two week board and train they brought her back a new dog. I didn't believe it would work on Mylo but as a last resort we called. Enter Nelson. The two week board and train (dog boot camp) and a couple follow up visits with Nelson and his recommendation of the E-collar and I'm a believer :-) Mylo sits, stays, comes when called, goes to his "place" when instructed, stays until "freed", heels perfectly on the leash and doesn't bark at anyone or anything while walking. He does not cross the threshold (even at an open door) and no longer eats houseplants or garbage out of trash cans. I'd say with about a 98% success rate, he no longer has accidents in the house. If this sounds like it's too good to be true - believe me - I feel the same way. But thanks to Nelson I now have a well-trained, CALM, happy dog. Suburban K9 is the best decision we ever have made for our dogs. We rescued our pitbull Gretta from a shelter, and she was dog-reactive. Len came to our house and gave us the tools we needed to help her, and to help US overcome her reactivity. We never thought she would be OK around other dogs, we honestly just wanted her to be more confident while on walks. Not only did we do that, but we worked with her and over time, we were able to have her start meeting other dogs. Now, a little over a year later, Gretta has helped us foster 12 dogs in our home, helping teach them what it is like to live in a home as a "normal" dog after being pulled from high-kill shelters. We ever Foster failed with one, so Gretta even lives full-time with her canine sister, Izzy! We NEVER thought any of this was possible, but with the knowledge and training that Lenny gave us, it happened!
