EXPENSIVE! I've ended up here a few times over the last few years - it's close to my house - and sometimes I need something not carried at the grocery store. I always remember it being over-priced - but I rationalize the convenience - "it couldn't have really been that bad - could it have been?" then I walk in the door - see something I know the common price of - and I'm like "no effin way - they want how much????" if you have a "membership" card - you'll pay really expensive prices. if you -don't- have a "membership" card - you'll pay completely and totally outrageous over-the-top prices. seriously - check their cat litter prices - then go to fred meyer. you will be disgusted. read more

Great dog training. They will also carry heavy objects to the check out stand and then out to your car ~ cheerfully. I came in to buy cat litter for cleaning up some oil and the salesperson advised me which brand to buy and how to safely use the product. The store is always clean and it is in a great location. Really superior customer service! The Petco in West Seattle rocks, too. Excellent management and they care about customer satisfaction. If you have an issue with Petco ~ let them know and they will fix the problem. read more

Arrrggg. I am so done with this place. I have no choice but to come here, because I have a ferret, and most of the specialty pet stores in the area don't cater to that particular species (I know that my fuzzy little friend is the fastest growing pet in America, but apparently some people don't recognize a new market when they see it...) Anyway, my beef isn't with the staff, which is knowledgeable, stocks the best ferret chow, and always gives my little buddy tons of attention when we bring him in, but with the other pet owners. We've been bringing the fuzzball by once a year to have his vaccinations at Petco's low cost clinic, and every time we've had to stand in line with all the other "low income pets." The problem is that their owners are the biggest nutballs in the city! I won't even go into detail about the weird behavior that I've seen at the Petco clinic. Suffice it to say that most of the humans there act like they are the ones who need a distemper shot. read more

2 weeks ago my boyfriend and I bought a baby guinea pig here. Once we got him home we noticed he had a circular bald spot (about the size of a nickle) that was scabby in some places. This seemed odd but we thought maybe he had gotten bitten by another guinea pig in the cage at petco. We called petco and they said we have two options- take him to our own vet at our expense, or take him back to them, they buy him back and treat him with their vet, and when he's better we can buy him again. We decided to give it a week and see if the hair grows back before taking him back to petco. Well the hair didn't grow back, in fact we found another spot on the other side of him a couple days later. We bought him on a Sunday, and 8 days later we took him back to Petco and explained what was going on. They said the vet was coming in the next day and we should call back that evening to get an update. So I did, and they informed me that he had a respiratory infection. Ok, that was unknown to us but if he has one then it's a good thing he's getting treated. I asked about the bald spots, she said the vet found nothing wrong with his skin. Hmmmm, ok that seems weird. I called back later that week to ask how he was doing. Again they told me he was being treated for a respiratory infection but that was it. I asked about the bald spots. They asked what kind of bedding we were using, we were using the right kind. Then the girl on the phone assured me again that there is nothing wrong with his skin, they didn't even see any spots. I called back a couple days later to ask about him again and this time demanded they look at the bald spots. She told me for a THIRD time (very condescendingly) that there is nothing wrong with his skin and bald areas are normal for this type of guinea pig. By this time I was so incredibly frustrated. I don't need to be a vet to know bald scabby spots that sometimes bleed are NOT NORMAL. After explaining this to her she finally decided that she would make a note of it for when the vet comes again on Tuesday. Well, they just called us back today (it's Tuesday) and low and behold, HE HAS RING WORM! Wow, so I guess I was right about the bleeding scabs not being "normal". So now the poor little guy will be with them for another 15 days. I don't know how a vet manages to miss 2 nickle sized scabby bald spots on a baby guinea pig. If he had been treated from the beginning he would be almost ready to come home by now. Also, ring worm is HIGHLY contagious, so chances are the rest of the guinea pigs that were in his cage are infected as well. Not to mention all the people that bought them and took them home and let their kids play with them. I'm very surprised we didn't get it. How does Petco get away with selling such sick animals? Ring worm and an upper respiratory infection? That's pretty sad. If I hadn't demanded on the THIRD CALL to look at his skin they would have sent us home again with a guinea pig with ring worm. read more

Sarah listened carefully to the special needs that I requested, made some suggestions which I appreciated and then followed through with an excellent job of grooming. Clean, efficient, knowledgeable and professional. I don't often give 5 stars but, in my opinion, this salon deserves it. read more

Best groomer for our giant Pyrenees: Bjorn!! He was careful and meticulous--he even made the tough spots on a Pyrenees look good (bottom, under the tail, under the armpits, behind the ears. I don't think our dog has ever been so well de-matted, you can even see through to some pink skin--perfect for summer. Usually when we have him de-matted he still comes back clumpy in some parts that people miss because he has a lot of surface area and long fur. Not this time! Also our dog is not the best client for sitting still, and Bjorn said he had no trouble and our dog didn't act stressed when we picked him up after 4 hours of grooming--a testament to how well Bjorn did! I came in with my puppy who has three bald spots on his back from demodectic mange. I have had dogs with it in the past, and have been counseled on it with my vet already. I approached two women to ask them about a shampoo recommendation for my puppy's itchy skin (he is a breed that typically has skin issues) and before I could blink the both of them were on the floor petting and playing with him. I even said, "I'd like to ask a question about shampoos" and one of them jokingly held up her hand and said "One moment, we're busy" and went back to petting my puppy. Again I asked about which shampoo would be best for his itchy skin and soothing the mange on his back. Immediately one of the women ran to a sanitizer dispenser and starts soaking her hands with it and the other holds her finger up at me and said, "First of all, you need to tell everyone not to pet your dog if you think he has mange. It's highly contagious." Besides this being plain rude, it's medically incorrect. Demodectic mange is something all dogs carry and only shows itself on immune-compromised dogs, like puppies. It is not contagious and it's already beginning to heal as he's gotten older. Google that shit. Secondly, I before I even had a moment to ask my question they had their hands all over my puppy with three large bald spots on him. If they are so concerned about contagions in dogs, then they probably should ask the owner before petting a stranger's dog. I needed an answer to a simple question--instead I had a group of four people (who moments before were petting my puppy and completely ignoring me) lecturing me on the contagiousness of mange. I stated, "Everything you're saying is the exact opposite of what I was told by my vet." That shut her up. I also had a return for a carrier I had purchased for an emergency plane trip home. My friend ended up having one I could use instead, so I left that one at home and used hers so that I could return the very expensive carrier I had purchased. While making my return the woman asked "This is the puppy with mange, right?" and then grilled me on whether or not it had been used, after I had already made it clear that it hadn't been (and even if it had, demodectic mange is not contagious). I was thrilled to find a large Petco near my home with lots of well-priced items for my puppy. I was not happy with the prices and small selection at Mud Bay and All the Best, so I have been into this Petco multiple times in just the last couple weeks to get goodies for our new pup. I will no longer shop at Petco after this experience. These women are not veterinarians and should not rudely lecture people on medical issues they are not informed on. I have had wonderful experiences at both Mud Bay and All the Best with him and they were actually informed on his skin condition, so they will be getting our patronage now. read more

I took my dog at the Petco in Ballard to get her nails clipped... I am not going into details of what happened there, but after they were done she was bleeding all over the place! Petco is a great pet store, but when it comes to nail clipping make sure you go to somebody who can do the job!!!! read more

We got a rescue dog 4 days ago and headed to Petco to get some much needed supplies. I was perusing the aisles with my husband, and within a few minutes, a woman came to ask if we were finding everything ok. I asked her about the treats, and she took the time to explain all of the varieties and what they were best for. She also gave us some great ideas for keeping our new dog entertained. A little bit later, she saw me again in the grooming aisle, and spent a great amount of time explaining which grooming brush was best for my dog. She even went to get a groomer to double check (I have a poodle), which was really nice. I already had a brush at home that I bought the day before, and they basically told me I didn't need to buy another one and the one I had was perfectly fine, which showed me they weren't there to just upsell me on every little thing. Lastly, she explained a lot to me about different types of dog food and why some are better than others. I told her the food my dog currently eats, and she actually said it was a great food but they don' t carry it and then proceeded to give me the name of a local pet store that does. I was so impressed by their customer service, that I would definitely come back here. The only reason I am giving it four stars out of five is because they are a bit pricier than other places. We ended up going to the other pet store to buy the dog food, and it turned out the dog treats we bought were about $2 less and the dog poo bags were $3 less. I will probably be buying these items at the other pet store from now on, but I think it was certainly worth the initial extra $5 we overpaid to get the type of service and time this person spent with us explaining everything I had questions about. I suppose the reason Petco may have higher prices is so that they can have more employees available to roam the store to help people like me, whereas the other store only had enough people to cover the registers. This is like the Nordstrom of pet stores, so it's for people who are willing to pay a little more for incredible service and product knowledge. read more

This review is for the Friday evening crew who works at Ballard Petco, since I usually stop by for kitty supplies on my way home from the gym. Maybe my expectations are just really low from years of living in California, but I think these guys are great! Courteous to customers and each other, prompt and helpful when I'm looking for something random, and willing to carry heavy things out to the car. As young 20-somethings, I'm sure they'd rather be elsewhere on a Friday night, but they never let it show. Keep up the good work! read more

I'm new to Seattle & took my dogs to Ballard Petco for grooming, based on fairly good yelp reviews, price, & proximity. Sad to say, I won't be a return customer. Several (4-5) easily clippable fur snarls on 1 dog's stomach were not removed (although I was charged extra for de-matting), their ears & beards seemed untrimmed/untouched, & many long tufts of fur protruded from otherwise trimmed areas - just a disappointingly amateurish job overall. On the plus side, the dogs seemed to have been treated well by the grooming staff & my instructions for handling my allergic dog were followed. Too bad the end result for both dogs was just not up to par (& my standards are only average.) read more

I used to love going here. My dog's regular groomer has left so I made an appointment with another groomer there. The day before my appointment I called and was told my appointment was canceled because the groomer had to move that day. They were booked out so it would be another two weeks before I could schedule. I complained to the person in grooming and he said "sorry." I called to lodge a complaint with the manager. The person answering the phone said she was sorry I had that experience and she would tell the manager. She did not ask my name or contact info. I wrote to the company and got an auto reply that they got my email. Extremely poor customer service. read more

I have used Petco gooming for my dog Honeybee for many years now ! and have never had a problem with the way they treated my baby.But on August 1,2009 that all changed,I have told them for years not to kennal my dogs because I have rescued them from people who beat them while they were in kennals; to corral them instead but this week-end they didn't. And my dog Honeybee now is in pain thanks to them. They put her in a kennel and when they went to get her out,and picked her up by her front legs leaving her body hanging in the wind and some how i am not sure how she got one of her back claws pulled out.It will neaver grow back again. She lyes around in pain.As for my dog Benzy they shaved around his rear too much and now its burned .I will never take my dogs there again. I don,t recammend the the groomers in ballad at petco at all. Here is an update for all of you thinking of taking your pets here to be groomed.I took my Honeybee in to our vet and after the vet took a look at her paw, The vet told me there was only one way a dogs thrid nail could be pulled out that way. She went on to tell me there was not tear in her nail bed as there would be if honeybee had done it on someones shirt .It was a clean pull out which means that they were trying to trim her nails and she tried to pull her paw away and they pulled back with alot of force because she is a barker and they were mad and fustrated. This in a form of animal crulty and i am going to look into it read more

I believe this store is a lot better than the Shoreline and Lynnwood locations! This location has a bunch of betta fish to choose from!! Also, their turtles and tortoises look a lot healthier and happier than the Shoreline store tortoises did! Plus, they actually had full stock of blood worms when Petsmart and the Lynnwood Petco was out! Friendly associates too! The one thing I don't like so far about this location is the tiny entrance! read more

i called the ballard petco to schedule a grooming appt , and the lady on the phone and asked me tons of weird questions, like who was his vet, when was his last rabies vaccine, etc. i didn't know when he was last vaccinated since he's indoors, so i just guessed. so then, i get a call back from someone else at petco about 15 minutes later, informing me that she had called my vet, and my cat was actually overdue for his rabies vaccine, and did not indeed get vaccinated when he was last in at the vet in february as i had said! i couldn't believe it! they actually went behind my back and CALLED MY VET to ask!!!!! my cat and i no longer shop at petco. read more

if you are looking for a guy that TRUELY loves to work with pets and you need to trust a man with you pet to trim nails etc. well then go to petco on Holman Rd. and meet ADAM!!! My little dog Raggs is very picky, as well as my self and we love Adam because his service is above and beyond anyones expectations. Adam is the only person that I have handed little Raggs over to for nail trimming and Raggs comes back Happy and had not one shred of fear....which means alot to me. I have also had the pleasure of meeting the woman taking care of the fish....outstanding and full of information in that dept. I have also met Edith(Edy) and she is also very into pets and full of information. I prefer to shop in the smaller stores to support my direct local community but when it comes to nail trimming....Adam is the king.
