I'm a somewhat regular at this particular Petco, primarily for taking my dog for grooming. I occasionally will scope out some of the deals here which I recommend, but this will mostly be about the grooming services here. I come here because it's fairly reasonably priced for the service of cut, washing and nail clipping. I've used a couple different groomers here and it varies. What varies is the friendliness, but I feel like "how's your dog today? How's it going today?" is a good start. I haven't gotten that in my last couple visits. I get a groomer looking like they're coming off they're break and still looking exhausted and only somewhat interested in doing the job. That said I am generally satisfied with the actual grooming, but the little details I ask for are sometimes missed, and I've gotten that attention to them before. The staff are usually friendly, and the store is well stocked though it's not usually where I get my pet needs. The clearance rack is something I like about this Petco and have scored some nice deals browsing it each visit. So, while this Petco is ok, the services are a tad hit and miss. read more

Crown Hill location of Petco says they take walk-ins for grooming, they effectively do not. They will 'check to see if someone is available' every time for something as simple as a nail trim, but this location always seems like a ghost town when I'm there. Nobody there to help. Guessing this location of Petco may not be long for this world. Will Crown Hill pet owners even notice? Update: what seems like an automated response came almost immediately, either a form template or already AI agent. The big box corporate advantage is usually a fully staffed store, but not at this location. read more

I have taken my dog here twice for grooming (just scheduled a third visit). She has seemed to like each person and does not react anxiously to walking in or seeing the groomer-always a comforting sign. I docked a star because I did book the holiday package last time which was supposed to include a themed spritz/spray smell and a bandana but she didn't have either when I picked her up. Otherwise a good experience and she is a large, fluffy dog. read more

This seems to be a very similar, corporate place that looks the same anywhere you go. The staff said hi as we walked in, but no one offered to help or asked if we needed anything as we walked through. Fish of all colors and sizes (tiny to small) were viewable, as were a handful of lizards, turtles (who seemed to lack space, all stuffed and climbing over each other in their tiny aquarium), snakes, gerbils, and a few other small potential pets. read more

March 30, 2025. Petco not good. A week ago I went to Ballard, Washington's Crown Hill Petco to buy a feeder goldfish, you know, the 29 cent fish that are primarily used to feed carnivorous pets. I thought of the purchase as a "rescue" from certain death but also as a pet fish to live on my kitchen counter until he out grew his lodgings and was moved to the outdoor pond. Petco only had, I kid you not, one small goldfish. They told me 220 goldfish had just died there but they couldn't sell me that one surviving fish. They were concerned about the "care" I would provide? They did sell me a pitiful thin wild type beta. Hmmm. Profit motive? So I drove 7 minutes south to Petco's Seattle Inner Bay store. Asked about 29 cent feeder goldfish to be kept as a pet, I was interrogated by the Fish Social Worker. I think she thought I was going to make sushi because I said kitchen. She did not know that I was aware of "care" 220 goldfish had just received from the Crown Hill Petco literally minutes away. Ultimately, I think Petco's business model is to sell expensive fish and fancy fish gear. There's no money in 29 cent fish! read more

So happy with our experience in the grooming department. We have a floofy Bernese Mountain dog and the groomer Alyssa, did an amazing job with him. She was very thorough in explaining what she may need to do ( he had some matting) and how much any extra time would cost. I have been going here for years, but today was my last time. Petco Grooming discriminates against older dogs. I brought my healthy (not overweight, no meds) and SUPER active 10-year-old dog in for the umpteenth time and she asked if he had any health problems like a heart murmur, and I said the vet had mentioned a *very slight* heart murmur that was not remotely an issue yet. (My human brother has had a mild heart murmur his entire life. So what.) I even offered to call my vet and they said no. They REFUSED to groom him. I was shocked. I had taken the day off work, arranged my whole schedule around this, and they noped out. INCREDIBLY UNPROFESSIONAL. The store sucks and is always out of everything and the groomers won't see your dog if it isn't in PERFECT health. Probably because understaffed corporate places are known for injuring and killing dogs at their groomers, I guess. In fact, on another review website, I saw photos of injured dogs including one with stitches from a cut they caused. (I also let my dog walker know and I'm sure he will let all his dog walker friends know to tell their clients not to go here!) read more

I just had a very unsatisfactory experience buying flea medicine for my cats with an associate named Sean. I regularly buy these products every couple of months for my dog and three cats, but no more. Sean was rude, wouldn't let me pick up the package I needed and shut the glass case in my face. I've been trying all week to get my dog into the grooming center to get her anal glands expressed. Not pleasant but I have had it done at other Petcos and happy to pay for the service. I went 2 days in a row but they were short staffed and not taking walk-ins. Called the next day and was told the same thing. Called today and the rudest person to ever answer a phone chewed me out for calling the store instead of the groomers who never answer the phone. I was just trying to determine if they were taking walk-ins today and she said she had NO IDEA because she wasn't a groomer. When I went over the weekend, there was a sign that said they weren't taking any. Very visible. Just another omen of the death of customer service. I cannot recommend bringing a havanese here for a haircut. They seemingly have no idea how to cut their hair and just buzzed my dog until he was naked. During the intake, I said puppy cut, keep waterspout tail, lil' trim to ears . I was actually shocked when she asked if I wanted them to cut the ear to the leather and then preceded to show me how short that would be. Just picture Llyod Christmas. It didn't make sense and I should have left then. They showed me the hair length samples and I picked the 2nd to shortest one (7 I think). I take my dog to get groomed at our usual place every 8 weeks, sometimes sooner. They had to close unexpectedly for an emergency so I took him to Petco. He had typical maintenance mats and he did not need to be shaved almost to the skin. I've also never had my dog react poorly post-grooming but for the past 48 hrs he has been extremely anxious and low energy. His daycare commented on his behavior AND his haircut. ‍ When I adopted him over a year ago, he was indeed very matted. I'm attaching pics of then and now. Back then, I took him to Pawbillion in Bellevue and they told me he was matted and would need to have a closer cut then I asked.... you can see the difference in outcomes. Did not get greeted at the door, just given the "look"... but the person after us got a very loud "Hello! welcome!"... ok... Came in to purchase a bunch of fish & plants to our 3.5 week 29 gallon set up with my kid, after a super bad nite in emergency room, to cheer both of us up. The lady with long gray hair in aquarium dept. ignored us. No, literally! I finally gave her the eye contact and said "Hi, how are you?" No response, she was busy being busy, I guess. I stood before the tanks for at least 15 minutes, making my selection. She did not ONCE ask if we required assistance. Another woman came by and she jumped to help her right away to grab some goldfish, while chatting like a sunny day. Made us feel unwanted. My son asked me to leave & go to another location (kids feel energy, people ). I told him I'm going to give her a chance. When she approached me, she seemed angry with me being there. Her aggressive attitude was NOT appreciated! Not once has she asked if I was a newbie (I am seasoned) & needed advice (I did not, just wanted a quick transaction & go home), she just dove into patronizing me on the fact my new set up is 3 weeks old and I need to wait before introducing any fish for 6 weeks (what?!) or I will be responsible for them dying... then kept repeating they will have to deal with me bringing in dead fish so make sure I keep the receipt (said it in a very very unpleasant tone as if I am an inconvenience to them). So I stated I did not intend on returning anything if it's my fault, to which she stated "fish feel pain and we want to make sure they go to a good home" EXCUSE ME?!!! I said to her since she doesn't want me to buy any fish, I will only get 3 neons, not 6 nor any others as intended, she again switched up and said "oh go ahead, you can, again I just want you to be aware your tank is not ready and they will die"...bla bla bla! I don't care, bottom line is- she.was.RUDE! She asked questions then literally jumped into an argument about every answer I gave her!!! Listen! You are my new local store I moved back to my childhood area down the street. I will be your regular. Be KIND but most importantly professional to people!!! I do not appreciate your nonsense and your unsolicited advice and patronizing is not appreciated, especially on a day like me and my son had. The only explanation I have to this treatment is they were racist. I will give it another try and will update my review. She was hardcore picking on us, it does not take 6 weeks to cycle a new tank, especially if we did not use tap water & everything is set, tested & ready to go! So first and foremost, i'll start out with saying that i made a mistake. *I* made the mistake. Not petco. I walked in to the store without a mask. I didn't even think about it. I got out of my car, had my dog, walked into the store, and that was that. One star because of how ONE person reacted to that after I was already there for over 15 minutes. I was approached by an employee asking if I needed any assistance while I was looking at aquariums. I said no, and did some shopping. I went to the furry creature area, the birds, the cat toys, dog food, meandering throughout the store. I went back to the aquariums and did get the attention of the same employee who had approached me before. While we were talking, another employee came up to me and said, "did you know that when you enter this store and talk to employees, you're risking everyone's life because of this pandemic? that's blah blah blah..." I walked out. So...again...I didn't even think of the mask thing. I wear one everywhere. Here, I just spaced it. The reaction of the employee, however, was atrocious. His "holier than thou" attitude of high-horseness is definitely NOT what PetCo needs in this difficult time. Note to PetCo: Post a sign on the outside of your door requiring masks. If someone doesn't see the sign, just advise customers when they walk in the door. This is not my usual PetCo. Now, it'll never be my PetCo. It's a shame because by the looks of the store, the loss of another customer is definitely not something this location can afford. read more

Came here yesterday to pick up some items for my dog, and Cheryl is the reason why this place is getting upgraded to a 4 star! She was super knowledgeable and friendly. She had extensive knowledge on the product I was buying, she answered all of the questions I had, and she even went as far as to checking the online prices to see if the item was cheaper because they do price match to their website. She didn't make me feel like I was a burden, and she genuinely seemed happy to help. She's one of the most helpful Petco employees I've ever encountered, and this store should hire more employees like her. We adopted a 3yo rescue dog. In our first week as dog parents, we were seriously wondering if we had made a big mistake! We found online that PetCo was doing $25 private intro classes (even during the pandemic, thank goodness) and signed up as soon as we could. I'm not sure if there are multiple dog trainers at this location, but we had Nikki -- who is absolutely amazing, I truly can't recommend them enough! Also, they train with positive reinforcement, which is really important to me. The intro class gave us hope, so we immediately signed up for 6 private sessions (weekly) and were able to choose a time and day that worked for us. We chose private sessions because our dog is reactive to other dogs and needed to work on that first before attempting any group class. Our dog started out as a diva, who would barely let us talk to Nikki at the beginning without whining, barking, or howling the whole conversation because our attention wasn't on her, and hyper focusing on any dog she saw/heard, barking endlessly. Our classes were completely custom, we would talk about issues we had since the last class, decide what still needed work or if we needed to review anything, and what new things we wanted to try out. We drilled into the basics (some we had already worked on, like sit, lay, look at me, etc.) and also learned settle, touch, place, leave it, give, quiet, stop, stay, wait, close, nice, up, stand, and even started on some tricks on our last class, like bow and sit pretty. All of this in addition to dealing with behavioral issues like play biting, jumping, dog reactivity, loose leash walking as well as distraction training and ways to burn off energy. We still have work to do, but our dog is much better on walks, doesn't react to every bark she hears in the neighborhood, and can even stay quiet when a dog walks by about a block away. We feel well-equipped to continue working on our dogs manners and have even been to a dog park and had a few play dates. I can't stress enough that these are really people training classes -- the trainers will train you how to train your dog -- shows you that your dog can do what is being asked -- but it is up to you to put it into practice at home and before your next class. read more

This Petco is conveniently located right off bus lines 15 and 75 in Ballard. The store is decently sized. I see a lot of birds and rodents for sale, as well as fish. The cat section (The one I go to) is enormous. There is so much cat food and supplies in this corner. Prices are okay, a little on the high side, but I noticed that the prices online are a little cheaper (if not a lot cheaper for certain items). If I recall correctly, they sell the automatic litter boxes at the store for like $20-$30 higher than their sale prices online. Buying cans in bulk does not seem to matter that much, if at all - it looks like they just calculate the case price as unit price x quantity. If you use Weruva food you can get its sister brand "Soulistic" here for slightly cheaper than the Weruva name brand. For example a 3oz can of wet food would cost about $0.99 in the store while in pet stores like Mud Bay, etc. the equivalent Weruva can is about $1.29. The staff here are super nice. read more

When I lived in Ballard, I took care of all my pet needs at Petco. I got everything from the basics like high quality cat food to cat litter to cat toys. What I love about the store is I'll be shopping and be startled by the resident cat. I've never asked anyone about the cat. The cat is typically doing cat things - sleeping, scratching posts, and acting ambivalent about everyone and everything in the store. Pretty cool. Like most pet stores, there is an abundance of dogs in the store. Most of the time, they are well behaved but there is the occasionally bark fest and excitement when one dog runs into another. I think the store is a little small for the dog training area but they seem to make it work. The last time I was there, a dog was being trained and the trainer asked my child to participate. Uh, no thank you. I find the staff very friendly and helpful. For instance, when I check out, if there's a coupon, they simply scan it without saying a word to me. That's awesome since I don't look at the flyers because I'm usually there to pick up something specific. I wish I lived closer so I could go there more often. I still go there a fair amount because I constantly make up reasons to go to Ballard. read more

Today I brought in my 2 lab mixes for grooming. The biggest reason that I bring my dogs in for grooming is that if I clip their nails at home I tend to clip their quicks and cause them pain. When I dropped my dogs off I had a bad feeling as I watched the female (there were 2 attendants today - one male and one female) being VERY harsh with a small Dachshund as she clipped her nails. I ALMOST removed this service for my dogs because of this behavior, but I didn't. I had a 2:30 appointment and was told the dogs would be done by 5:00. At 5:00 I called because I hadn't heard anything and was told it would be another 30-45 minutes. At 6:00 I received a call that they were ready to be picked up and came to grab them. When I arrived back home I noticed the back of my car covered in blood and my 10 month old puppy limping into the house. She has a tan coat and the hair on her toes was covered in blood (I have a photo that I'm happy to share). I can only assume that she was treated the same was the Dachshund I had seen earlier was being treated. Your personnel should be trained to avoid a dog's quick and to treat a quick clip when it occurs. Petco sells Styptic powder so I don't see why this would EVER be an issue. This experience has turned me away from Petco as a company for more than just my dogs' grooming needs, but also any future merchandise purchases I may make. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update: I copied and pasted my review directly from the customer service complaint I made to Petco. I placed the complaint in the evening on the day of the incident and heard back by the next morning. The regional manager called me and apologized for how Ellie had been treated and provided me a refund. While I will not use Petco's grooming services in the future, I did appreciate that they took the complaint seriously and that they are taking action to fix the issue. read more

And by great things I mean a gently 'you're not supposed to be barking anymore' sound that was to be emitted when the little sweet, but slightly vocal Chihuahua makes more than just a little noise. Damn thing went off for no reason every few seconds and the pup didn't seem to give a crap. Three stars for the helpful staff and the Halloween costumes. If you've never seen a dog dressed up like Elvis, just you wait. Lucky for us, they had a tiny white and gold pants suit in an Extra Small.. complete with a tuft of black doggy chest hair. Just your average big box pet store. I did have really helpful service though and the gal at the register was very cheery and polite. Made me smile and feel glad that she loved her job. There's nothing better than interacting with people who are happy to be at work and she seemed to be having a ball. I re-upped my pet closet at home with more cat food, litter, and a few accessories. One can never have too many kitty cat neckties! I also peeped the fish section and while I was surprised at the low, low prices of their really beautiful saltwater fish, their fresh water selection was pretty boring. Dog moms and dads BEWARE!! The grooming department has no idea what they are doing, and are so lazy they are willing to LIE. I took my Pomeranian to this Petco location last Sunday for a last-minute grooming appt. I stopped taking her to Petco for grooming years ago because the groomers made a big deal about having to hand scissor her fur. In this instance, I had to take her last-minute for a trip. FYI: Pomeranians have two layers of fur, and if you cut their bottom coat too short, it grows back coarse. All groomers know this; it's standard information. I specifically asked that my Pom be hand scissored, and had a long conversation with the groomer about it. I don't have her name, as the service ended up being free because I complained, and don't have any way of knowing her name. She agreed that Pomeranians have to be hand cut and the length kept long to protect their coat. Anyway, when I picked my Pomeranian up, she had clearly been buzz cut very short, all the way past her bottom coat, and now she looks like a shiba. When I asked if she was buzz cut, the groomer said yes, and when I asked why this happened when I specifically asked for a hand trim, she said I picked a buzz length, and I told her she was lying and to look in her notes about what I said. She was caught red-handed when she got on her computer and saw that in our history, my dog has always been hand cut. The manager did not make me pay for the service, but this is irreversible damage done to my dog. Completely unacceptable, and disgusting that the groomer lied to me to save her some work. When I complained to the manager, the cashier said it wasn't the first time the groomer had been complained about that day. Don't take your Pomeranian here!!! They will buzz cut him/her and leave their coat completely messed up. read more

I have been to the grooming salon at this location twice and had a bad experience both times. My dog is not super pumped about getting her nails trimmed but both technicians that assisted acted as if they had zero experience with dogs. They wouldn't pick her up and take her to the back (she's a chihuahua that doesn't bite). Instead they just tried to drag her for about 10 minutes terrifying her even more until they relentlessly picked her up. One tech ended up not even being able to do much to her nails. The other guy said she bled on quite a few nails, which hasn't been customary in the past. The first time I went, they were so slammed that we waited about 30 minutes as the girl ran back and forth to find our info that was never originally stored in their system (someone at another Petco location dropped the ball there), all while answering the phone about 10 times in between. It was a disaster and way more time than I have ever spent at a retail grooming salon. The second time, I called to make an appointment for a nail trim and gland expression and she told me "it's walk in only and please come after 5pm because we are slammed." We got there about 7:20 and the male tech told me "I can't do her gland expression bc I've already cleaned the sinks." I was livid, explained that I called and was told to come in later, and then asked what time they stop taking walk ins (because that was something she should have conveyed on the phone). His response was "at 7:30." Since it was before 7:30, I challenged him and he said "well, no one was here so I cleaned them early and I am not recleaning. Sorry." Even explaining how painful it was for my dog's behind still gave the same response- "sinks have already been cleaned." Wow. I've been here twice bc it's way closer to my house but extra drive time is totally worth it for a better experience with their competitor. Awful, awful, awful. Grooming gets 1 star. The store itself gets 2 because of the many issues I've had with incompetent employees. P.S. At the first store that dropped the ball with not storing my pets info, I witnessed a customer so angry with grooming as well for different issues. The manager had to get involved on that one. I can't recommend Petco grooming in any capacity. read more

It's kinda like dog porn. Not what you're thinking. Just Petco is rows upon rows of all kinds of doggie-related paraphernalia. Anything you can think of is here: dog food, dog collars, ear powder, treats, brushes, even costumes for dogs around Halloween. Each product type has numerous sub-categories. Think about dog food and you get duck and potato dog food, vegetarian dog food, etc. All in all, it's a giant supermarket for animals. I've mentioned dog related items, but there's small sections for each type. You've got the fish section, cat land and a smaller area for the tiny varmints (ferrets, guinea pigs and rats). As an added bonus, they do have a grooming section in the back which did a good job with the little one. The staff was also extremely friendly and helpful; I'd like to give a shout-out to Sam for doing a great job with dog grooming and spending extra time going through all the different types of brushes and what they were good for. In the end, much of one's experience at different places is based on customer service and they did a very nice job here. read more

I recently rescued a dog from the Seattle Animal Shelter who was in need of basic training. If you have searched the area for dog trainers, you will commonly find a six week course costing upwards of $150. I found out Petco offered training after stopping in to buy food. I went this past Saturday for my first class ($99.95 for six weeks) and was pleasantly surprised. The trainers work around YOUR schedule. I was able to pick the day and time frame that worked best for me. It ended up that my dog was the only one in the class so we received one on one time for the entire hour. Annie helped fit my dog with an easy-lead harness to prevent him from pulling me. Best investment I've made thus-far. We went over some basic commands, which Jacoby responded very well to. We also walked out with two bags of treats (one prepackaged and one from the snack counter), a training guide, a treat bag to carry all of those awesome cookies, a doggie toothbrush, and some coupons. The only thing I didn't like is the class is held at the front of the store so people kept on leaning over the fence to pet my dog while Annie and I were trying to work with him. Overall, I would definitely recommend Annie to train your dog. read more

I wasn't able to do it myself because she was too high strung and freaked out from all the new surroundings. So I took her in to Petco on my lunch break and had them trimmed. Since then, Delilah has been much happier and more content (and she's not trying to scratch everything in sight!). I also stocked up on a lot of essentials here as well. I've never owned a cat in my adult life, so I had to basically start from scratch on kitty items. This place had everything I needed. S'ok. You have to track help down when you have a question, but that's fine. The staff seems to be knowledgeable enough. They're friendly. I get my beta fish there, and my snails. Don't know if it's the way I care for them or the quality of product, but they live about 2X longer than most I hear of. So that's cool. read more
