The store is well kept, has a big selection, and great grooming services. We walked in to grab dog food and they were well stocked. We browsed around and found they were having a sale on toys. So of course we had to get a few for the babies! We sometimes get our dog groomed here, and they are amazing. Our pup has lots of anxiety, but they are patient. They also have a vaccine clinic on specific Saturdays of the month! Definitely check them out for your pet needs! read more

I just wanna start off by saying I did not read the reviews before my mom dropped our house dog off at this groomers. My dog is very happy, always wagging her tail always giving love giving kisses and just very go lucky but after we took her to the groomer she came back very different and Like traumatize she was not wagging her tail. She looks scared in the face. She was avoiding everybody and shaking, I don't know what happened at the groomers, but that's not normal. It did not go well from the start. When we dropped off our dog (a pug), they had us take off his harness and put on a choker leash. They should've put it around his body but instead they put it around his neck. They told us to leave and they'd call us when he's ready. As we were leaving, they tried pulling him in, which was choking him, instead of just picking him up. They were pulling him so hard it was literally choking him to the point his eyes were turning red. This is not good. Especially for a pug. It's well known that you should never use a collar/leash on a pug as it can collapse their trachea. You should only ever use a harness. Every time I've taken him in elsewhere, they'd wrap it around his body and one leg as a type of harness. So it did not go well. Then when it was time to pick him up, the groomer, Bri, was so so so rude. She was all snippy with us saying they weren't able to trim all his nails (probably because they made him super anxious from the start with the choking) and so she gave us a coupon...ok. But then she tried blaming us saying it's because we haven't brought him in, in 3 years and she said it with such attitude like we are bad dog parents. I wanted to snap at her and tell her how we've been bringing him elsewhere to his vet to have it done and we wash him at home, but brought him back to Petco this time because they had an opening soonest. But I just kept my mouth shut because I don't like confrontation and just wanted to get my dog back. If they were this rude to me, I can't even imagine how they treated my baby. So then she tells me I needed to pay before she'd give him to me, so I'm waiting to check out and no one is there. I'm waiting like 5 minutes for someone to check me out and then finally someone comes but here on his cellphone talking for a long time. As this is taking place the groomer gives my dog back to my fiancé. After I pay, I went back to the groomer area to give her, her cash tip. She comes out so rude again, blurting out "what do you want now?!" With so much attitude. I told her I was just trying to give her the tip....i should've said guess you don't want your tip after dealing with all her attitude but I just gave it to her. When we got home, we noticed they didn't clean his ears either when they were supposed too and didn't brush his teeth. It's very apparent this groomer doesn't like her job with how she treats her customers, either that or she was having a bad day. Anyone who knows me, knows I'm one of the nicest people there is. And my dog is like my baby. I don't have the best health and he's been with me through my brain tumors and treatments and surgeries. And it took all my energy just to take him in. It was an awful experience for both me and my pug. I could tell when we picked him up that they weren't nice to him at all as he was so anxious still and not happy. Just not a good experience. UPDATE: If I could give this place negative stars I would. I took my dog to the vet a week later, I had them trim his nails because he ALWAYS lets them do it and isn't anxious with them and had them check his anal glands as well. Petco said they emptied them and I paid for them to do so. I even put note when I made the appt that his anal glands, nails, cleaning his ears and brushing his teeth was most important. Well anyways the vet office said his anal glands were extremely full. They told me they wouldn't be full if they did it at the groomers a week before. So Petco didn't cut his nails, and they lied about doing his anal glands, cleaning inside his ears, and brushing his teeth. So all they did was wash him and brush him. PetCo YOU ARE AWFUL! At arrival I was told that the groomer/manager did not follow through with her duties and was NOT in the salon to groom my dog. This was incredibly unfortunate and very frustrating as my appointment was booked online after being cancelled on prior. It was very unprofessional to receive a confirmation, drive a great distance from Santa Ynez to Santa Maria even with a confirmation to be told the groomer isn't present. I was kindly met with a girl who did the best she could despite the circumstances and offered to at least give my dog a bath and a nail trim even though she could not get groomed. This poor communication and lack luster attempt to retain clients has created a massive headache and i will never bring my dog back or put my animal in the hands of anyone who can not take responsibility for their job. read more

Self Dog Wash The self dog wash was filthy, there was dog hair everywhere as if they did not clean at all, the buttons did not work for the soap and the dryer did not dry at all, it was like trying to dry your dog by blowing on them with your mouth. The staff did not help at all in trying to educate us in how to use the bath for $20 per dog. I would suggest going to Lemos instead as they provide you with a clean tub, good soap, towels, and a much better blow dryer. Never going back. read more

On Wednesday September 3, 2025 I sent my hubby to Petco to purchase a replacement cage for our beautiful Guinea pig. I did some research and found an amazing deal on a WARE small habitat 28" cage. The website shows the original price as $69.99 on sale for $35.49 at our Santa Maria store. I sent screenshots to the hubby of the cage and headed off to my night class at Hancock. The next day he informed that the cage rang up for $79.99 and he ended up paying around $86.00 for the cage with tax! When he inquired about the price at the front register before purchasing, the young man with little patience told him he needed to pull the price up on his phone. My husband who was a little flustered at this point explained that his phone internet wasn't working very well in the store and showed him the screenshots I had taken earlier that day. The young man shrugged him off and made absolutely no effort to help. My husband ended up purchasing the cage because he knew we really needed it. We took the cage back to Petco yesterday where we were able to return the cage and purchase it for the price stated on their website. I understand mistakes happen and sometime items don't ring up at the price they're supposed to, but where did the $79.99 come from? What if I didn't do the research? $40.00 down the drain just like that? Unfortunately, I don't trust that Petco is trying to save customers money and will no longer be spending my hard earned money here. Customer service is terrible no one acknowledges you or offers help, also they had a light in the store that kept flickering on and off that could be very bothersome for photosensitive shoppers. My pup was originally scheduled for 2pm & the time got moved two other times. This was not the issue but something to note for future clients. After waiting about 15 minutes at the desk for a groomer/worker to pick up my dog for his appt, the most unenthusiastic, bad attitude groomer, asked me questions I had already filled out online. (If there were fleas, aggressions etc.) I felt super unwelcome and like the worker did not want our service. After about 3 hours I received a call to pick up my dog. I went straight over and ended up waiting AGAIN 20 minutes at the grooming desk, while I can see other employees view me waiting and on with their business. Multiple groomers would glance over at my presence and not bother to assist me. Finally after still waiting I asked an employee at the register if I can be assisted. About 5 minutes later a lady came to help me and apologized for the delay. My dog was brought out and he was groomed great but did not have his back nails clipped. (This was supposed to be included) Nonetheless, I paid & tipped. When I get home, I see half of my dog's nail hanging off his toe. He was in pain and I had to clip it off. Overall, I received bad customer service and an okay haircut for $75. I will not return nor recommend. read more

I will never shop at Petco again. I enrolled in vital care program through the grooming salon so that I can get discounts when my dog gets groomed. As soon as I enroll in vital care, the grooming salon completely shuts down. I have no other reason to have vital care other than for the grooming and that service is not available to me. Petco will not allow me to cancel my vital care membership. I'm not even able to erase my card information from the account where the money is taken out of. Petco states that I agreed to a 1 year service for Vital care, but the program also guarantees perks for grooming, BUT THE SALON IS NOT EVEN OPEN OR AVAILABLE FOR THESE PERKS. If I could the rating would be lower! I am very upset on the grooming my Cavachon received at Petco by Tess. I really would not even call it grooming she was just shaved! I brush my dog every day so I knew the condition of her coat and she only had two small mats in her hair. One under her neck and one on her leg that I just did not have a chance to brush out prior to the appointment. I told Tess we only wanted her cut 1/2 inch and not to touch her tail or ears. She had beautiful Spaniel ears and a beautiful, feathered Bichon Frise tail that we really loved. When we came to pick her up one of the groomers came to ring me up and asked me if I wanted to add a tip. I said shouldn't I see my dog before I give a tip and she said they are getting her but she needed to check me out. I gave her a $15 dollar tip, bill totaled $95.00 with the tip. They brought her out and she was shaved to her skin, the cut the hair on her ears short and shaved her tail into a puddle cut. I was in shock! I said what did you do! Why is she shaved and Tess just said there were mats. I then said You cut her Tail...and again she just said there were mats. I was speachless and about to cry so we left. I am sure she had never groomed a Cavachon or a Bichon Frise before as their hair is tight and curly, not matted. She just took the easy way out and shaved her instead of grooming her. I do not normally write these reviews but did not want another dog parent to go through the shock and disappointment I have gone though. I went in to buy a few things a while back, and there was a bag of dog food that was half off because of a rip in the bag. It was an expensive brand, and I figured this would be a good chance to try it and see if my dog actually liked it without being out the entire cost if he didn't. Well, they messed up at the register and didn't take the half off - there was a lot of confusion, the girl who was at the register seemed clueless as to what to do and had to have someone come over to help, who also didn't seem to know what to do. Instead of just giving me a proper refund, they said they'd put the extra onto a gift card. I wasn't happy with this, but they said there was nothing else they could do since I used a credit card. I just tried to use that gift card today, and guess what? There's nothing on it! I hadn't even scratched off the pin information yet, so I know it wasn't used, and I hadn't been in the store since then. I no longer have the receipts for the food since it was a while ago, so I know that if I went in and tried to talk to them I'd get a shrug and 'sucks to be you!' So that's around $40 that I'm out because they are clueless and apparently activated a gift card without actually putting anything on it when they were supposed to be returning it to me. I'm disgusted by their inability to do basic transactions and if I could do a clawback on my credit card, I would. This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever experienced. Basic intelligence would tell you that if you overcharge someone, you refund them on the method they used to pay or in cash, right? Well, apparently not! Apparently their method is to tell you it'll be on a gift card, and not actually put anything on it and hand you an empty card! Don't shop here. Worst service and employees with bad attitude My son and I went to buy diapers for our dog, we were confused about what size we should be the right one. I started looking for an employee to help us. There was a woman who was cleaning the fish tanks. So I approached her and said excuse me, again excuse me three times and not only ignore me but she started walking away for us. HOW DISRESPECTFUL. Visited this petco for the first time in several months and yep, this is still the worst Petco in the history of petco. The shelves are always 75% empty so hopefully you don't need a specific food or supplement, isles always crammed full of unpacked boxes, basically a disaster at all times. There's usually only one or two visible employees frantically doing their best to help customers. Employees are polite, this is not their fault. Hey management! This Petco has gone downhill. It's always messy, so much is always out of stock. What a shame. Seems like they can never get good management to run the store. I really dislike the store manager named Amanda. I don't understand how they can hire such a rude person for this position. that the last time I went to this location, the aisles were blocked by pallets, and merchandise wasn't stocked yet. What was crazy to me is that's how they left it midday, and I didn't see any employees working on it the whole time I was in the store. Silly me thinking I could get my cart around one of the pallets, which I couldn't, so my cart got stuck between the pallet and a shelf from the end of an aisle. Since there are so few employees on the salesfloor, nobody was around to help me get the cart unstuck. Took me a while, but I finally got it. The way the pallets were placed makes it look like you might have room, but no room was left for shopping carts to move up and down the main aisles. How can this be ADA compliant for those in wheelchairs if a shopping cart can't even pass them? What's more disappointing is that I learned that a tenured grooming employee was fired. I can't believe this company would let go of such a great and highly rated groomer. JENNIFER PATTERSON YOUR AMAZING. That manager lost a great groomer and pet lover. Recently adopted my doggie. Took him in for a cut and picked for him to the the zen package. I had a 20% off coupon and my total was 70 dollars. I thought that was a pit pricy. But again I haven't compared prices being that this was my first time ever taking a dog to get groomed (cut) I was happy with how good he came back smelling and how clean he was! To whom this must concern, I wanted to let everyone know who is looking for a job, not to apply at Petco in Santa Maria. They have a high turnover rate. The current general manager who works there isn't as nice and sincere as they seems to be. The manager will be your friend and then go behind your back and terminate you. Many people have lost their jobs due to her. Thanks to WiFi, prices in store can be compared to Amazon Prime and save some money buying online whenever possible. Staff is polite and attentive. I come here mostly for grooming. Petco app didn't give access to discounts without creating an account and even then an employee and I had to search on the web browser to find a coupon. No use for the app on this. My most relevant gripe? Grooming area doesn't have a way to contact staff inside. Portion of the window that allows groomers to see outside to the desk is blocked by company ads. This means you can just be standing there for the appointment and it might take a while for them to notice you are there. Obviously this needs to be improved. See pic for what I mean. Also, it would be good if they had a loyalties program that gives discounts to long time customers. Having to download the app to get 10% discount in grooming only makes sense if it is more than a one time deal. I don't really like having useless apps sitting on my phone. read more

Took my young dog for a self grooming yesterday. As I've noted before, the store seems either understaffed or the staff is undertrained, or both. It was late afternoon and the one grooming attendant was helping another customer at the register. When it was my turn, the process went well enough, except that she said the self grooming area had been very busy during the day and she wanted to make sure there was a clean basin. There wasn't. The floor was covered with a 1/2" of water and all the tubs were filled with hair. She cleaned one out for me and got me set up, and I paid my $12. In the meantime other people were waiting, so really someone else should have been in charge of making sure the bathing area gets a wipe down every couple of hours when it's busy. I got my dog set up and started rinsing her. Then I switched to shampoo. All I got was more warm water. I tried the puppy shampoo option, Same thing. I tried to catch the eye of anyone, and finally waved to the girl at the register who came over. I told her there was no soap coming out. She said "maybe it's out of soap" (really??), and went to find someone. Another employee who looked like she was leaving for the day overheard me and came over and said, "There IS shampoo in there, it's just diluted." I said, "I know the shampoo is diluted, not full strength, I've been here before, but this is different. This isn't diluted its nonexistent! Why don't you guys change up the ratio of water to shampoo and make it a little stronger?" She said, "Customers just blaze through it." I suppose she meant that having a little more soap in the mix wasn't as profitable for the company. She then said, "It's probably out of soap. But we have dog shampoo you can purchase and keep if you want." Yep. She did. She said that. I said, "Are you telling me that for $12 I get the privilege of running warm water over my dog, but the shampoo is extra? I don't think so." Eventually, someone filled up the soap dispenser enough that I could complete the bathing of my dog, who was very agitated having to stay in the tub that long. In the time it took, I could have bathed her three times. No exaggeration. I need a refund and a free bath or two for this. I don't typically complain, but between the pretty outrageous comment, the lack of taking responsibility and fixing a problem quickly, and the fact that from the day it first opened, the store seems to be having some managerial issues, I'm pretty fed up. Bad bath I took my skin Tzu here to try the self dog bathing . I didn't know how it worked. I had to keep going and asking for help, which wasn't around! The girl in the grooming part, I kept asking her for help. She was busy, but still came. A young guy came by, asked him why the soap wouldn't lather? They just said, we tell people to bring their own cause it comes out with the water and is watered down, the conditioner didn't work,so the girl have me a bottle of conditioner. My review is on the self wash stations as I didn't have time to shop the rest of the store. I like the concept of the self wash stations. For $12.00 you receive a washing station, shampoo, two towels, brush and apron. I have gone twice now and it doesn't seem like there is much effort to keep this area cleaned in between dogs. One of the tubs was covered in dog hair and the other one didn't look like it was fully washed. The brush provided still had hair from the last dog in it, but nothing I couldn't wash quickly. The groomer comes out and always greets you with a "Do you need something?" statement as you wait at the register ready to pay. Overall the service is something that is needed in the area, but I hope in the future the staff can figure out how to keep the tubs cleaned between customers. read more

Their website says 100% satisfaction so I went to return the kitten food that I had purchased the day before that my kittens would not eat and the cashier said that due to the pandemic they were not doing any returns at this time.
