My partner first visited Rivers Edge in order to register our dog, pay for doggie daycare, and get a tour of the facilities... tour was not available after 3pm. Our choices in the area were limited and we needed a place for our dog the next day, so my partner went through registration without a tour. The registering employee was provided all medical details - we noted that our dog's booster was due but would be completed at our vet visit scheduled for the next afternoon, and that we needed daycare starting the same day. She said that wouldn't be an issue so we paid in advance for 10 days. The next day, partner drives the half hour to Lompoc to drop our dog off and was told that she could not be taken back without the booster. So now he's in the situation we were trying to avoid, unable to work because our dog does not have care, and the woman at the front desk was not concerned about the miscommunication. Booster acquired, our dog is now a regular doggie day care customer. She looks forward to her visits with her dog buddies and the staff. Pick up and drop off are fast and straightforward. She gets a little dusty but we bathe her regularly anyway. Since that first day, we have had a few more issues with daycare availability that are all the more frustrating due to lack of communication. If doggie daycare is optional for you, this may not be an issue, but for us it means someone has to take a day off or loses half a day to making alternative arrangements. There are a few things you can do to try to mitigate the risk of not having care, but the legwork will be on you and are not guaranteed. 1. Weekday after a holiday - facility will be full of boarded dogs who haven't been picked up yet. Call ahead and/or arrive at 7am. 2. Rainy day - facility will be limited by kennel availability to avoid muddy dogs. Note that a single rainy day can lead to a week of limited availability due to muddy conditions. Was going to board our dogs there for 2 nights but there is no staff from 6pm until 7am and all the animals are in crates! That is 13 hours being in an enclosure! Dogs will automatically try to hold their urine and feces (hello that's why we crate train) and even if you opt for the bigger area it still defeats the purpose of crate training if the poor babies hold their potty so long and then have to finally go in their enclosure. And what if something happens to the pups? No one is there! What is the point of boarding an animal if all they are going to do is lock them in a room for 13 hours alone. People can and do neglect their animals for free :( . Really cruel. DO NOT LOCK YOUR DOG IN A CRATE FOR MORE THAN 4-6 HOURS AT A TIME! For puppies crate time is much less! They have to use the restroom and get thirsty! I can't believe dog owner's support a business that does this to their dogs and pays for it! Heartbreaking! read more

I am posting for a friend as she does not have an account. On the morning of Feb 17th, I left my small dog at River's Edge Pet Lodge for two days while I prepared to go and leave town to attend my brother's memorial. My previous experience at this facility had been very positive and I had checked with some people who had their pets there with the new owners and it still seemed safe. But it is not. At 8:00 am on February 19th after I had paid and tipped staff for the stay, my little dog was brought out with a very injured hind leg. He was so hurt that he had his leg raised up as close to his body as he could get it. The attendant Trinity was very kind and explained that when she took him out of the kennel on the morning of the 18th, he was in his current state. So for that day she kept him in his kennel to rest, only taking him out three times for meals and to relieve himself. She also had explained how she had checked his hip to see if that was causing the problem. She also said he had not yet had breakfast and it was just past 8:00 am. I asked if there were notes from the 17th to explain what had happened. There were no notes and I had not received a call at any time letting me know my dog was injured. Since there were no notes, I asked to have Kelly call me as she was the young woman who had received Teca when I brought him in. She was the only person I recognized from the previous owners and she greeted my dog with a terse, "you haven't been here in a long time". (That was unusual because he was always warmly greeted on any precious visit. At that time I also told Kelly that besides his regular food I had separate packages of his treats labeled for each day. Obviously that was never done as both packages were still with his things which I had brought for the two days.) I called a friend who had vet tech experience and she came and looked at my dog without touching him. She could see where his leg was swollen at the joint which is his knee. She advised I keep him resting that Sunday. I did that and did not allow him to walk. Rather I carried him wherever he needed to go. I called my Vet's office early that next day and arranged for an emergency appointment. They did X-rays and ascertained no breaks or tumors, infections or other problems. Of course X-rays do not show ligaments but it seemed likely it was a CCL injury. A small tear could heal with rest but a bigger injury might require surgery. When Kelly called me the first time she said that nothing had happened that there were no other small dogs so my dog spent the whole day outside in the small dog area by himself. He was fine when he went in for the night. Kelly later called another day and said she had only been in until noon on Friday and someone else had been there in the afternoon. I heard no concern for my dog at any time. Kelly also called me Dearie which I found very patronizing and let her know what my name is. After about a week I finally called the owner and explained the scenario that took place, She never expressed any concern for my dog and her whole response was that she would speak to the staff. It was obvious to me that the staff had no written directions place for any emergencies that should happen to any of the dogs who were supposed to be in their cared. Nothing was in place for documenting what happened, for calling the the pets's person or for any followup from the Owner either. It felt like if the owner acted like nothing much had happened, I would just go away and stop causing so much bother. I called back a few days later and asked to see any video footage from cameras so I could tell the Vet what happened The first question is, of course, how did it happen. Michelle the owner said they only have cameras in the front office. They do not need them in the back because they are always out there, Well, clearly that makes no sense since no one could tell me what happened or even when. However, since she was as cold and rude as the time before I did not bother to point out her contradictory statements. I purchased a crate for may dogs safety and I spent the next two weeks carrying my dog and making sure he completely rested that leg. He was on pain medicine the whole time. Yesterday at a re check the Vets said the next step to his recovery is to get a surgeon's consultation since he is still only using three legs to stand or walk. read more

This is the best facility with the kindest staff you could ask for. We have been coming here for eight years. My dogs act like they're going to Disneyland when we pull in the parking lot! This place is the worst. They don't have staff to care for the dogs and that was words from the owner herself! The dogs are left alone for over 12 hours. I had to call the police to get our dogs back. The owner refused to let us have our dogs back until they arrived. She could have told the girl over the phone to give us our dogs but she waited to come in and see the police. There is no real appointment times. We had a set appointment and nobody was there. This place is poorly run and the dogs are not cared for appropriately. DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE!!!! read more

Very disappointing this last two times we have our to little dogs here. In February to pick up our dogs my wife was turned away after waiting outside for 5 minutes while the women inside was messing around. She was told she would have to come back in the afternoon. Women was real snotty. This past January the bill was shocking. We have been boarding our dogs here for over 10 years. It has always been the same except for the past year. This time was 30% more plus add-on for feeding the little dogs. I thought they made a mistake on the billing so I went to ask about it. Got a snotty response with a look from the "manager". I asked if the owner could contact me as well. That did happen but owner, Melissa, was not very pleasant to speak with. Said they posted the fee increase and feeding fee on the wall behind the counter. When I was there speaking with the "manager" she pointed to the wall. The print was so small that I can't make out what it said. The billing just does not make sense. To put this in perspective, our boarding for 10 days have been $510 to $512. picking up are dogs this time the bill was $640 for 9 days, pretty big increase. Melissa explained they charge $2 to feed each time. It was to cover their food. Thing is we supply food for them to use. So the upcharge is $4 per dog per day? for feeding with our food? Guess you can say "There is a New Sherriff in town" Boarding Kennels around all seem to have a price to board and feed. Good to know there are other facilities in Lompoc that have a flat fee to board. We just made our next reservation with Village Vet Clinic and Boarding. The boarding in Buellton seems to be pretty straight foward as well. No extra "feeding charges. I get that there needs to be increases to cover expenses, overhead and profits. The presentation was poor. The facial expressoin from the "manger" and the unpleasant conversation over the phone with the owner is the reason for the 1 star. Plus the last time I made the reservation they kept telling me that the computer would not allow them to go past January. To check back in a week. I did this for weeks even though I made the reservation 2 months before the boarding. We were on pins and needles until just days before out trip. One of my wife's co-workers had her reservation screwed up last minute and had to do something different. Even though she spends money for day care several days a week. The sun rises and sets on that man but the dog was so excited after her first visit, she was ecstatic on her second. Our dog Beau has been a regular at Rivers Edge since he was old enough to go to doggy day care. We take him once or twice a week and he is so excited to see the staff members (all of them!) that he nearly knocks them over running in the door! My husband and I have boarded Beau overnight a few times now, and I have no doubt that he is in good hands day or night. The business is owned by Dr. Tammy Mendez, a wonderful veterinarian in Lompoc. I rate this service very high because the rates for such excellent service are very reasonable, especially if you invest in the 30 day day care pass! Unbeatable. read more

We left our pets there for two days and we where told we could pick them up by 5pm on Saturday. My son left from Modesto early got to the facility at 3:50 p.m. on Saturday no one around, he waited for seventeen minutes and called my wife. My wife asked if any cars in the parking lot and none I told him to wave at the cameras some one should see him because some one is suppose to be there all the time. We had four dogs at the facility. My son left and came back at 4:30 and again at 5 p.m. and no one ever came to the facility. My wife and daughter called the facility on Friday and Saturday to check on the dogs and no one ever answered or called them back, and they where suppose to put the our dogs on Instagram and never did. My wife and daughter went to the facility first thing (8am) Sunday morning and they told them they where charging them for Sunday and refused to give them our dogs. The girl told my daughter thay they are short staffed and they don't even answer the phones on Fridays and that she was at the facility at 5pm on Saturday, my daughter confronted her about the times she changed her story two different times. My wife and daughter asked to talk to the owner and was told she was out of town. When my daughter called the police is when the owner came to the facility and gave my family our family pets and didn't charge us for the third day. Can you imagine a business turning down $700 worth of business because we were TWO minutes for our drop off appointment? That's what happened. We arrived from Solvang at 9:02 on a Sunday to drop off our two dogs for two weeks. The door was locked. We called the after hours number. No answer. At 9:06, we saw a teenager walking back to the kennels. We explained that we had a 2-week vacation planned and reservations in CA, OR, and WA. She called her manager, probably an older teenager. No dice. Rules were rules. At this point it was 9:10. By this time, she could have checked the dogs in, they could have earned $700, and we could have been happily on our way. BUT NO. We went home, got the kid next door out of bed and bribed him to take the job. For the rest of our vacation, we got calls from our neighbors. One dog jumped the fence three times, wounding herself, and that was before the fireworks started. We've had good experiences with River's Edge before, but something has changed. You only get voice mail when you call. It took me three calls to make the appointment before a call back, and then there was another call back asking if we still wanted an appointment. I am an overprotective crazy dog mom, and I was used to corporate franchise-type doggy daycare places in big cities. Our four dogs went to those locations repeatedly with no issues for several years. We recently moved to Lompoc and needed a doggy daycare location while moving into our house and also for trips out of town over the holidays. Our dogs stayed here 3 times even though it didn't meet my criteria for a safe doggy daycare location, but I tried it out anyway because there's no where else I know of in Lompoc with a play yard for the dogs and I don't feel comfortable with my dogs being in a kennel all day. After picking them up the third time, I will not bring them back. 1. They mix the small dogs with the larger dogs, so my little 15 lb. dogs were playing with ginormous dogs. Red flag. 2. The dogs are left alone in the play yard a lot, with toys. Red flag. 3. There are no lights in the dog kennels and at night the staff has to wear headlamps to find your dog after dark. Red flag. 4. The staff is mainly very young women, either still in high school or just out of high school. I would feel better with actual adults around. Each time we picked up our dogs they seemed shaken up and had unexplained cuts on their legs/feet. One of our dogs has Inflammatory Bowel Disease and she was so sick when we picked her up, she got sick in our car (from both ends!) before we even drove out of the parking lot. She was so anxious that we couldn't calm her down for a few hours. I don't feel confident that they gave her the special food or the medicine we left. We won't be going back. I'd rather drive to a different town or hire a dog sitter. The staff was always really friendly and nice and had great customer service smiles, but I think there are not enough staff hired to adequately take care of the amount of dogs they take in daily. There should be someone in the playyard at all times. It seemed like there were just two people there most of the time. read more

The owner called and corrected the issue below immediately. I would still caution for people to triple check the booking dates. I booked my 2 dogs here for 9 days, December 20th-29th, the beginning of November. I received a voicemail on November 20th saying they were cancelling my reservation for the day. I thought that's weird was I supposed to bring the dogs in for a meet and greet. Tried calling back and no one answered. Went in later that day with my dogs shot records and was asked if I received their phone call. I said yes I tried calling back but no one answered so here I am (with no dogs). They said no problem and entered my dogs shot information. I called today to confirm the drop off time for next Tuesday and was told I had been booked for November 20th-29th and that reservation had been cancelled and they were now all booked up but they'd put me on the waiting list. What?! Why wouldn't they have mentioned this when my dogs were supposedly supposed to be there when I dropped off their shot records on the 20th. I understand mistakes happen, but they had the opportunity to correct this a month ago when the shot records were dropped off. read more

Every time we pick up our dog from daycare.. his paws are all cut up. At first I thought nothing of it .. he obviously had a great time if he ran around with his buddies all day... But having to see him come home limping EVERY single time after daycare ..its just painful to watch. We live on a second floor of an apartment.. and the poor fellow is in so much pain that sometimes he doesn't even want to come down the stairs to use the bathroom.... They were patient with all my questions (for future serves besides grooming) and more importantly they had an opening right away, this was why i had looked for a new groomer in the first place. I decided to bring him to Rivers Edge for some socialization since he was used to being with other dogs. :) It's a bit of a drive for me but well worth it !! Absolutely adore this place, Rivers Edge Pet Lodge!! My dog as well, he gets so excited driving up to the lodge's front door. They take amazing care of my dog, very friendly knowledgeable staff that he loves also. They always give him doggy treats upon leaving which he appreciates but I do as well as they take care of even the smallest details. Plus hes always so happy when I pick him up showing me hes had a great time. The daycare allows me to get errands finished while knowing hes getting quality socialization time while developing friendships. I'm looking forward to booking other services like grooming.
