I really tried to give Petco another shot. The last time I came, we had a great experience--kind staff, no issues. Unfortunately, this visit was completely different. From the moment we walked in, the groomer had an aggressive energy that made me hesitant to leave my dog, but I decided to give it a chance. I received a call saying things were going well--until suddenly, he snapped and bit her. While I absolutely don't condone that behavior, I have to be honest: her demeanor felt off from the start. Even when I returned, she had an attitude that felt more like "deal with your dog" than concern. My mini doodle showed no aggression toward her when I picked him up, which makes me feel like he was reacting to how he was being handled. What also confused me was the grooming process. She shaved him down before even washing him, despite saying she would work through the mats first. It's concerning because it feels like the grooming was rushed, and maybe that's when a mistake was made--perhaps he was nicked or mishandled. Instead of acknowledging that, the blame seems to be placed solely on the dog. After reading other reviews, I'm not the only one who feels like some of the groomers here lack the patience and care dogs deserve. Went in for a few things with my dog. I got to the cashier and said, "Hello, how are you?". And she didn't say a word. My dog kept pulling on his leash, so I got distracted and apologized explaining he's not leash trained and she was still unresponsive. When I finally looked up at her, she was looking at me like I had 3 heads. I'm not a talkative person by any means but I do make small talk at the register because who doesn't?? Common courtesy is so simple yet so many people lack it. If someone says something to you, you respond back.. The cashier: long dark hair, sweatpants and a t-shirt seems miserable and was rude. I complained to the manager and all he did was interrupt me, wouldn't let me get a word in and gave me excuses. "She's soft spoken" blah blah. Eventually I got frustrated enough to swear on the phone because he kept talking over me and he ended up trying to end the call so I said "F you". It could've been different had he just listened for 2 minutes because I never talk to people like that. The manager was just as childish and rude as the cashier. Tyler the "manager" doesn't know how to speak to customers. Gives out inaccurate information to customer and is very rude to his own staff. The Newington CT store is a butcher shop. I brought my dog there for three years, trying to get her quick in her nails to receed. Three years later I got this fully INCOMPETENT GROOMER JULIAN,who refused to go shorter on her nails as i requested. My dog ended up in the Emergency vet due to loosing a whole nail. I called the manager who yelled at me and was just unprofessional and nasty. STAY AWAY FROM THIS HORRIBLE STORE,YOUR PET WILL GET BUTCHERED! I want a refund for the surgery and the company is impossible to contact. The Attorney General has been contacted and others. read more

Today I have had my 2nd worst experience with Petco. The first experience was when the Southington location accidentally cut my dog near her eye, she was transported to the emergency vet for stitches. Today when I picked up my dog from the Newington location, the groomer J'Naya told me my dog was sh*t just like me. Also I was told we are on the Do Not Groom list. None of the unprofessionalism was unwarranted. J'Naya was upset because I made the comment that I am always up charged. J'Naya also punched a wall and called me a b*tch and that if I didn't leave she was going to kick my a**. I will be contacting cooperate next. Someone who has that type of behavior shouldn't be allowed to be left alone with anyone's fur babies. read more

This is the worst place for nail trims. The groomers are incompetent don't get nails short enough. My dog had her nails left toi long by Julian it caught,ripped off and she ended up in surgery. As the vet said there was no reason for long nails like that. It cost me $1,000.00. PROTECT YOUR PET FROM THESE INCOMPETENT PEOPLE. The manager is nasty as well. read more

Yesterday at about 5:45pm I arrived at the location of Petco in Newington with my daughter we were going to buy some crickets for her pet gecko. That's our closest Petco store. We went into the store and proceeded to walk around the store, looking at the other pets. Then we stood by the aisle where the crickets container bin was located, to wait for an attendant. As we were standing waiting this person saw us and practically rushed to our location and asked us what we are waiting for, the manner in which he spoke to us scared my daughter. When I told him we needed some crickets he told us there were not any the size we were looking for. This guy is pretty rude the way he speak to customers is very intimidating, two weeks prior to this time I have another encounter with the same attendant. I buy crickets every 2 week in this store and never before I had any issues with any of the other employees. when I pay, I also give a 2 dollars donation. I'm considering changing my pet store to PetSmart in Manchester to avoid any confrontation with this person. read more

Happy with the grooming department.Very nice and pleasant so far and this is our favorite location.

Extremely poor customer service, untrained staff, and a rude, disrespectful attitude toward customers. It's clear they lack both the experience and compassion needed to properly care for animals. If you love your dog and want them treated with kindness and professionalism, look elsewhere. I dropped my dog off for the full works. The customer service worker and I went over all the services I requested and he examined my dog prior to taking him back. 45 minutes later, I was called asking if I gave my child sedatives because he was lethargic, almost sleeping, and not cooperative. Then, I was called about 15 mins later by the groomer saying they did not have enough time to complete all services requested as he was leaving shortly and they would need to reschedule for another date. I politely asked if they could complete what they could and I would pay and then make another appointment. Groomer agreed. Then I was called because my dog nipped at them and that they would not be continuing service. This was 1.5 hours later. I asked what services had been complete aside from grooming which they could not do, as I booked the full works, they stated nothing. Waste of my time and day! Also when I went back to pick him up, they provided other locations I could visit to get other times, I kindly stated I would not be returning to Petco. Then 5 minutes after we left, I received a call stating that due to my dog's highly aggressive nature, we would be banned from further service. Make up your mind was he lethargic or was he aggressive? My dog is not aggressive. I am so disappointed. Do not recommend!!! read more

Don't get your dogs groomed here. Learned the hard way. They never do a good job. My dog is nervous but is a very sweet boy, the receptionist DRAGGED my dog HARD by the slip collar into the back. Did not try to soothe him or gain trust. Then went straight into trying to clip his nails. He bit her(not even hard enough to leave a mark). He has NEVER bit anyone or anything. It has been a while since I have had a need to come to a Petco as my cat passed away in July..he was 15 and was suffering from Liver Failure, but we have finally decided our hearts are ready to welcome a new member of the family once again so we were in need of the staples, one of which is a carrier. I went with a top loader, because if you have a cat you know that loading them through the top of a carrier is way easier than the front door so it's worth ponying up the extra bucks to do so..but how much extra? Not the $60 price tag I was seeing. No way. Not when I had been to 2 other stores and seen it for less and when it was also on their website for $35.88....hmm... So I asked... I never ask. So glad I did because (shout out to Kathy) who told me Petco always honors their internet prices in store..YAHOO! And then..and then...when I scanned my rewards card I got another $12 off! I felt like I won the lottery! I literally saved over 50% when all was said and done thanks to her. So why the 3 star rating? I wasn't greeted, in fact I was totally ignored. When I walked in as 3 associates were engrossed in conversation as I walked aimlessly about with my phone out, and it was obvious I was looking at it to find something because I kept looking up at shelves and looking down at the phone. Not cool people. Especially not cool when you know I have options of PetSmart and Pet Supplies Plus within a few miles of you. If I was a secret shopper, they would have failed simply because they failed to greet, even though they were amazing in every other way. read more

The only reason I didn't give it 5 starts is because most of the time there is only one register open which makes it long to check out. I will NEVER come here again, specifically for grooming. To make a long story short, the groomer that works there had a bad attitude and she gives false information. I paid more money for my dog who came back to me looking the exact same way he looked when he was dropped off then when my dog was matted. I was trying to ask her questions and she wasn't trying to hear me, she just kept cutting me off. You can see by the other reviews this is not a great place to get your dog groomed here. They had a nice grooming service. We were given a letter after our dog came back from grooming from the nice worker about how well behaved our dog was and how she enjoyed taking care of him. We were also satisfied with his haircut, trimmed nails, and a bandana that we received when we picked him up and thought the message on the back of the Petco grooming report card was very sweet and considerate. read more

This was our first time at the Newington location and couldn't have been more disappointed in the groomers. I dropped our dog off and was told the apt would take 2 1/2 to 3 hours-4 hours and they did a butch job on our dog. His tail was completely shaved off, his legs were shaved in different areas and they said he didn't like his feet touched so they didn't cut his nails or trim the fur. I can understand not touching his feet if he was giving them a hard time but he came out looking like a 2 year old had shaved him. I'm so angry. Plus they charged me $40! For what??!! This was my worst experience at the vet clinic ever. I got there at 2:15 (opens @ 3:00) I was the 5th. In line. Perfect! At 3:15 an employee stated out loud that the vets were going to be AT LEAST a 1/2hr late. Ok I waited 40 minutes later the vets showed up in the vet clinic van. It took 20 more minutes to set up before they took my name only to be told I can roam & browse the store. Ok I said oh how long my wait. Another 45 minutes then kitty finally got her one shot. The vet barely looked at the cat. Actually one vet tech said to the other are you going f to look in her mouth. She barley lifted my cats lip to have the quickest look. I will report them to someone. I've been to this petco multiple times to get some fish or some supplies for my fish tank. Every time I walk in staff greets me and asks if I need any help. This store is quite large too and has many varieties of different things. Their aquatics area also has a vast variety of different fish which is very helpful. Me and my fiancé bought a ball python here and the service was incredible! We did research for about 6 months, where we would visit the reptile section and ask nearly all the employees every question we could possibly think of about snakes. They were always incredibly helpful and patient with us and always seemed happy to help. When we finally got our beloved ball python, a little rascal named Navi, we were told if we had any issues to come back and they would do everything in their power to help us. As luck would have it, despite over six months of research, we ran into some major issues. Navi was really bad at eating. She had been fasting three weeks before we got her and continued this rebellion when we brought her home. We have brought her back several times and have always been welcomed back with open arms, friendly faces, and helpful advice. Bill, Ryan, Amanda, and nearly every other employee has helped us at one point and we never had a bad experience. Navi still hasn't eaten in now a month and a half, so we brought her back today to see if there was anything to be done. Bill personally made sure Navi is getting the best care and directed us to a bunch of places that will give her proper attention. This story cares deeply about animals and their adopted parents. Lots of variety of dog food. Summer, one of the managers, is very friendly and helpful! I frequent the store weekly as I have dogs, cats, fish and reptiles. When I checkout at the register, carter is always smiling and greets me. Prices on some items can be a little lower compared to competitors. I really like coming here. I have bought 2 hamsters here already and they were all healthy they have nice selections of cages for rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, Guinea pigs and other animals. They do provide high quality food and toys. Nice selection of equipment for aquarium needs. The only problems are that the staff take forever to get to you, to give you your fish, hamster, Guinea pig of whatever you need them to do. I understand that they get busy but it shouldn't take 10+ minutes to wait for a worker. Another thing to fix is that when we went to buy our Beta fish, in the separate little containers there were a few dead fish on the counter which wasn't I big deal, I told the worker and she removed them with no fuss. I would recommend to a lot of people. Never heard problems with management like many other pet stores and it's very clean and professional. read more

Prices are higher in the store than online. MUCH higher. Which is fine, except that the online prices don't indicate this, unless you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and read the fine print. Also, the online-only items have "online exclusive" next to the price tag, which is totally misleading, since it makes it look like some website prices are on-line only, while others are the same. Nope. I made a special point of rearranging my errands to come in for a sale, only to find out that they wouldn't honor the online sale price. I was so annoyed that I left without buying anything. While the rest of the store staff is friendly and helpful, the aquatics person is horrible. I believe his name is Ron. Long hair, hippie-type man with a nasty disposition. His customer service skills are poor at best, and apparently he thinks it's perfectly fine to yell at customers, run after them out in the parking lot to continue to harass them about what they're doing wrong. (I saw that with my own eyes.) He screamed at a young couple who brought a turtle their children had found into the store in a plastic container. They were looking for advice on how to properly care for it. Instead they were humiliated, talked down to and harassed by this person. I have had my own dealings with him as well. He has berated my choice of fish (I've had successful aquariums for well over 20 years), made my husband and I to feel as if we were idiots for placing tetras with Mollies (Still don't see the problem there), and has left a very sour taste in our mouths. I've spoken with the manager, but I still see Ron there, harassing people. We've simply decided that the Newington Petco will not be getting any more of our business. read more
