If I could give no stars I would. I walked in today with my 4yr old and my mother, excited to purchase our new pet goldfish. We had already prepared our tank days before per the staff at Petco at a previous visit. When we approached Jess ( the General Manager) for assistance and she asked us our tank size. I told her I have a 6.5 gallon tank (one of a few, we also have a 6 yr old turtle and multiple size tanks), and she immediately and condescendingly shut us down saying we don't have a big enough tank for gold fish because they grow 12-14 inches and she is not selling us fish. I advise her I have a 10 gallon tank as well and she laughed and stated "yeah right, you just told me you have a 6.5, I don't believe you. I'm not selling you fish". The level of disrespect was too much.... I was done at this point, and told my mother we needed to walk away before I blew up. I walked to the front stood in line and asked for the manager..... well here comes Jess... advising that she is indeed the general manager of the store and there is no one else to assist me. I ask for her supervisor... of course there was no way she was giving me that info but she asked for my email to give to the supervisor ????? I told her I was not giving her my email, and wanted to know more about their policy and inquired about fish I purchased a couple of months ago that died shortly after purchase. She asked me if I still had the dead fish bodies.......yes dead fish from over a month ago... but that wasn't it.....It was when Jess advised me that I had to leave the store because she felt I threatened her by saying I was going to blow up earlier.... I will never give Petco my money again. Ps Looks like someone else had a similar experience on here smh read more

They gave me an appoint for Dec.25th and I have been trying to get it changed and it's always, we're very busy and will call you back or it's the weekend and office is closed. We had a really good experience with Petco today. Our two dogs were dropped off this morning at 10:00 and they were ready by 1:30. Today they got the short puppy cut which included the general grooming details. It turns out we should be feeding them grain free products. The groomer informed us that the female had really dry skin causing her to scratch and other skin irritations. She suggested we change her brand of food and snacks to (a Petco brand of course) that was grain free, dye free and free of all the other unhealthy ingredients. So we took her advice and purchased her recommendation, we will see how it goes. I am really glad she told my husband this now he will stop giving them unhealthy treats as I suggested years ago . Every thing you could want for you pets I believe you would find it here. This was my first visit to this location and I am very pleased with the groomers and friendly staff. I had a not so great experience at this Petco last week, so I figured let me check out what Yelp has to say and I guess ignoring customers is a normal occurrence here. I thought maybe it was just an off night because at my regular location that I frequent I've never been ignored like this. I have been looking for a new hip and joint supplement for my 8 year old German Shepherd. First of all it took me a while to find the treats, surprisingly they are not with the toys??? They are right in front of the register area. Ok so now I'm looking and reading nutrition labels on a few brands. Not one employee ever came up to me the entire time I was aimlessly looking for the treats or while in the actual treat area. I can see the one cashier at the register. I didn't want to ask him because he was just standing there behind the register. The store was empty and I thought to myself maybe he can't leave his post? He definitely didn't want to be bothered with me. I was reading multiple labels googling what this means and what that means. I was in the treat section for at least 30 minutes trying to understand these labels. Not one single person was anywhere to be found. And I wasn't in the back of the store I'm right by the register area but racks and racks of clearance items were in between us, they weren't clearance items they were stock that wasn't put out onto shelves maybe because nothing had prices on them and there was no clearance signs either, that was confusing? I just don't get it? So only one person is working in this store after 6 on a weekday? I finally gave up and purchased our go to hip and joint jerky because I know exactly how many I need to feed my boy. But just annoying. Because when I walk up he asks me if I found everything ok, would I like a bag, really quick, he didn't care if I found anything at all. No smile no genuine care? Like are you kidding me, I've wandered the 3 isles in front of you for a half hour and how could you not have seen me trying to read labels one after the next phone in hand. But I'm not the only one with this problem, I read through the reviews and this location is known for being not so great. I just don't get it. And either this location doesn't have the same sales and deals as the Point Loma location or they don't put the signs up? Because I went to my normal place and so many different promotions were happening and this was the very next morning. I'm sure LG just doesn't put the signs up. I don't know why I'm so frustrated with this experience but it really was horrible? Maybe because the cashier just stood there behind the register and could have called someone else up to help. I don't recommend spending money here especially when you have to fend for yourself. No wonder nobody shops here, it's that bad. read more

Love the groomers, especially Hannah and Frida but I assume they are all nice. So good job with that Petco. I would love to give 5 stars because VitalCare has been so worth it. But the store in itself could use some Feng Shui and more product. The grooming work area is very, very warm. I don't understand it. Today it was 60 degrees outside. Inside the grooming area it was a humid 80-85 degrees. Petco, step it up and hook up your staff and our babies with proper ventilation. I assume cutting costs is to blame. First they didnt honor the petco padres rewaed. There was urine on the floor by the register. I came at 10:05, they just opened and the urine looked to be old. They had a bin partially covering it. Started going to this Petco when we moved to the college area. I've always had friendly service. I realized that I had left a bag behind, two or so days had passed since the transaction. I called frantically and explained to Christina what had happened. She was very kind and understanding. I want to tell you about the great service I received at the Petco Lemon Grove, my dog goes to the groomer once a month where she sees Elizabeth who does a fantastic job the rest of the groomers are friendly and always quick to help whenever there's a need, the rest of the staff are friendly knowledgeable and always smiling and I find the store Pleasant and will continue to buy my animal products there and get my dog groomed there, I also have told many friends and family about the great service I received at that Petco. I bought a zebra snail at this Petco three days ago and at first my boyfriend and I were skeptical about it since it wasn't moving at all , but once I submerged it in my 10 gallon tank , it didn't move . It still has yet to move at all . Finally today I took it out the tank and felt the snail itself and found the snail to be rock hard ( dead before I even bought it ). I know the snail did not die from my tank since my ghost shrimp, amano shrimp and two bettas are all in perfect health and thriving . Good selection, large enough to not feel over packed, love the cash wrap with all the impulse goodies. Have grooming services available if you're in need of it as well. Don't like is that usually can't find an associate in section to ask a question, usually have to go towards front of store. Also don't like that they do not have a big selection of cat treats/etc... my cat in feneky and doesn't even like some regular meats so always looking for new treats for him. Gets the PALS membership and get the rebate on a % of what you spend. Got $20 one time and it just helps out get those little extra things we always seem to find and get. It's ok as far as stores go and gets the extra star for cleanliness and overall selection but could be just a little bit better with customer service availability. read more

Came in before 9 to buy a hamster today 06/27/22. Waited for a male employee to go find a smaller water bottle for the hamster we wanted as there were only rabbit water feeders available. Then Angel (said she is the manager) comes back instead of the employee and states they don't have any smaller ones. "That's fine" I say, can we go ahead and get the hamster ( just was going to buy the set up that has a bottle). She said "I wouldn't be able to sell you any because it's 4 minutes after we are supposed to leave". I honestly will be back for the hamster but I feel she should be talked to about this because if I was in the store before closing, waited for an employee, and still want to buy the hamster, I should be able to buy the hamster. Very disappointing and I am very dissatisfied as I buy my dogs 40-60 lb dog food bags, treats here religiously but I will need to switch locations as this is very disheartening as a continuous customer. read more

So with my crazy dog, I've been to more pet stores than I care to admit in the past almost 2 years. When we relocated to La Mesa from Point Loma, our friends at the other pet chain warned me that this store was not the best. I didn't want to admit that she was right, but 4 visits later- she is. The workers here are just not friendly. The ones at my former close by store were always nice, and happy to see anyone with a dog but this store- well- the dark mood of the workers matches the dark feeling of the small space. It's a well stocked store, and i guess it does the trick, but the staff I've encountered seems to hate their jobs. It appears the grooming portion is better, but the actual store- not so much. It's bad enough that I'd almost rather drive to Point Loma that come here if I have the extra time to sit in traffic. read more

I've been in many times since in the past few months, and, although there are signs instructing customers to wear masks, I always see a handful of customers without them. Mask-less people will walk past employees who won't say anything. It seems that management is not strictly enforcing this rule, which makes me fear for my safety and the safety of everyone who enters the store. My boyfriend and I went in to get our puppy some foodies, a new leash and a shiny new dog tag. Walking in I noticed that this store is smaller than other locations that I've been to, but this place is stocked full of everything and anything that you may need. The store was clean, organized and very easy to maneuver. We were able to find the dog food right away, along with the other items that we needed. The guy that rang us up was very helpful and was super nice. He explained what we needed to do with the tag we had purchased and pointed out where we can have it custom done on one of their machines. This store is relatively close to where we are so it's nice to be able to drive by and purchase what we need and get going with our other errands. read more

There's nothing flashy about this store, but (1) it's clean, (2) the cashiers are nicer than average, and (3) their selection is decent. I give them all of five stars because (1) they keep the shelves full, (2) the prices are reasonable, and (3) it's never too crowded in there. Again, this place doesn't do gimicky stuff to drive sales or otherwise annoy me. They're open when the sign says they are, and I can count on them to deliver. read more

This 5 star review is for Monica who cut my baby Lucky's hair! I always go here for the bath and haircut because they allow you to choose different smelling shampoos, as well as different services for your dog when getting a bath. You get to choose 3 services that come with the bath varying from conditioners, extra massage time for your dog, to even getting their nails colored! The lady that used to cut my dog's hair no longer works here so I was a bit skeptical because we had a bad haircut once, however, it was at PetSmart, so when it comes to new groomers I'm always afraid. This time I wanted my dog to have a short haircut, while still having the "fluffy" look and more rounded as well. I showed Monica a picture of how I wanted it and although my dog's hair was less fluffy than most Pomeranians, she still managed to do an excellent job. I dropped my dog off at 9 am and was finally able to pick him up around 4pm. Haircut and bath usually takes 2-3 hours but because of the haircut, she had to trim it with scissors as opposed to using the buzzer to give the desired effect. Definitely a 5 stars for taking her time and putting in the effort to please the customer! The result was PERFECT! My dog looked absolutely adorable with his short hair while still looking rounded without any harsh edges in his fur! Thank you Monica! read more

I've been taking my dog to Petco for grooming multiple times and he usually looks great after 2-3 hours, usually on a Saturday or Sunday. Today, I picked up my dog after he was stuck there for 5 HOURS... not only was i frustrated that they kept him so long but the haircut was awful. He's a Yorkie and his bangs were still covering his eyes completely, his beard was long, and the length of the body hair was of various lengths all over. I had the girl "at least clean up his face," but for $80 and keeping him for 5 hours with a low quality cut, I'm pretty livid and have completely lost trust in Petco grooming. read more

Other than the Friars Rd location this is probably my favorite. The staff is always very friendly and willing to help. I have never had any problems at this store. Petco is awesome, Inlove that they let you stack Petco coupons (even mobile) and manufacturer coupons. You can save big. The animals here always look well cared for and the tanks are always spotless. read more

Whenever I'm in the area I like to stop by and spoil my kids by getting them some toys or something new. First this Pecto is pretty small and they have a small dog toy section compared to Kahoots. I do like Petco because they do carry Merrick dog which my kids love even though it is a little pricy. They have very small cans, regular cans and bags of Merrick which is nice because Petsmart doesn't even carry it so it can be a little hard to find at times. Also Petco has a clearance section which is always nice on my wallet and I love that. The employees seems pretty nice and somewhat helpful and that's okay because I know what I'm looking for. I was looking for a Chargers jersey and a Steelers dog collar and couldn't fine them but I know Kahoots has the dog collar. This is still an okay spot because there really isn't much around for the kids unless I cross the 8. read more

This is for the Petco in Lemon Grove. What is going on down there! Called this morn to make sure they had my dog food. (Last month they did not.) Had 2 bags. I had them put one bag behind the counter, with my name on it. Called in the afternoon, to make sure was still there. Angel assured me it was. Husband went down to pick up, and a young man stated did not have. (I had just spoken to them 20 min prior.) I called, young man (very nice) assured me they do not have any. I asked to speak to Angel. Reluctantly, he put her on the phone. Indeed, the bag was behind the counter. Angel was very nice however, her niceness negated any empathy, acknowledgement that Petco made any mistake/s or an apology. I had to go back down to Petco to pick up. Julie, very nice, assisted me. My experience with this Petco that by and large, nice people work there, however their inventory and something is off with the way that location is run. I will probably go to another store to get my food. It just seems like a hassle to work with this Petco. read more

***Store review*** There's usually a lot of traffic coming to this plaza but eitherway they have a good amount of parking on the plaza to park at. The store seems small but offers a good amount of necessities for our pets. Staff is also accomodating! Cleanliness could do better as some of the items are a bit disorganized but at the same time a lot of customers don't care about putting the items back to where they actually belong or just toss them by the section where they belong so 50/50 on that. ***Groomer review*** Absolutely love coming here to have both my dogs groomed and cared for. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. You could tell they love your pets as much as you do. One of the staff loved my Akita/Malamute mixed dog and even asked for her to come back next time. Mind you my dog is quite the large mixed breed! Overall contented with the store not just because it's close to where I live but also the customer service that they present! read more

I normally love petco and prefer it over petsmart. However I am highly disappointed with their grooming department. I booked a appointment last Wednesday for this following Monday. Got the confirmation text. Then yesterday (Saturday) again got a text asking me to confirm my appointment-I did. Then this morning -Sunday- I get a text that they can't see us and next availability isn't until Friday. And offered 20% off. This is ridiculous being I literally just confirmed yesterday. If your understaffed or whatever you know in advance and definitely at least a few days before. 20% does not make up for this major LAST Minute inconvenience especially when then you can't even get me until Friday. When I booked my appointment there were quite a few openings for Monday still so I'm confused why I'm being asked actually told -last minute my appointment is being moved to 5 days away. This poor planning, poor whatever and poor attempt at making up for it with only 20% off. read more

Where to start... I have been a loyal petco customer for a while now and from this point forward I will never step foot in one of this locations. I have a large breed of dog and use the grooming service here. Up to this visit the service from the grooming had be good. Well that all turned left very fast. I took my pet to get groomed and showed up to my appointment to take my pet. ( I should have known something was wrong been that my pet takes 4 hours to groom and his appointment was at 4:45 pm) I went about it like I always do u dropped him off and went about doing other stuff. 3hrs later I get a cal that he is ready. I go in to pick him up and the groomer seem very flustered and overwhelmed. She explained that he had a hard time there this time and that she couldn't fully dry him. I was not it all upset at this point. Then she tells me that she had to use clippers and she took it up on her self to clipper his inner thighs never asked never got a call but she did it. I said ok I guess if that's what was needed. So it gets better I pick him up and his inner thigh looks a bit irritated think nothing of it as I figured maybe that was normal this was on a Saturday by Monday he would not stop licking the area so I was begging to get a little curious as to why this could be. By Tuesday It was extremely red. I went and bought yet another product to help it. Guess what nope no help by wendsday it was so bad that I freaked out and started calling every single vet in town. Thankfully found a vet that would see him. I took him the following day and to my surprise the vet said a) he was nipped with clippers and he licked and infected or b) dirty implements aka clippers where used. By the look on the vets face I can clearly tell she was trying to tell me it was dirty clipper job. Well my poor animal had to get a shot, get shaved all round the infection, a cone, and still has to gel 2 types of antibiotics well it gets better I call the store to let them know to be aware of what's happening they said oh we are so sorry store manager will call you on Monday. Monday come as around no call I call back same person answers who is another manager oh sorry he did not come in however they did cancel my following grooming appointment on Monday but couldn't call me to say that she couldn't speak to the store manager that day. Till this day no call nothing . I've called several times and employees have even said they have text the store manager my info yet no call. Please if you have a sensitivity breed or a large breed go to a specialty place not here and also don't expect anything from this store. Pictures below show from 0-100 on his infection. read more

A little story before my experience at Petco: We went to the County Fair yesterday. We won a Goldfish at one of the carnival games. On our way home we stopped at Walmart & bought a little 3 gallon starter tank that came with water treatment, filter, etc. This little fishy habitat set us back around $75. Quite an investment for a "won" fish. Despite our best efforts...Frank the Goldfish was dead in the morning. Since my two boys (and I admit, myself, too) had gotten pretty excited about having a fish, Franks death, as well as the $75 investment to a tank, pushed us towards the decision of utilizing the tank and getting a new fish. I got to Petco today after work and immediately Kevin greeted me. I told him "I need help with fish." He was polite, helpful, knowledgable and offered input and suggestions to my questions about the best type of fish that would suit my family. (Who knew little goldfish could get up to like TWO FEET?!?!?! Sure I've see Koi, but little tiny goldfish....??? I had no idea!!!) He told me what I needed for a more successful goldfish experience, but I decided the tank size was not something I was up for. I ended up going with the Betta. I thanked him for his time and told him I'd let him know if I needed anything, as I continued to browse. During this time I overheard another customer being more than rude to Kevin, and was impressed with how he kept his cool and diffused the situation, while also not allowing himself to be treated poorly. Bravo Kevin! F that rude a$$ guy! Once I'd settled on my items to purchase, I was helped by Sean, who I caught up to speed on my fish situation, and he walked me through the entire tank set up process. I got one small betta tank, and two fishes, which understandably he inquired about. I told him I had another tank at home and the two fish would, indeed, be in separate tanks. Good lookin' out Sean. I had another item that he informed me I didn't really need because Betta's didn't have the same tank requirements as Goldfish, so that was nice too. Overall, I'm super impressed with Kevin and Sean today. For someone with NO fish experience, who just kind of got tossed into it with a carnival "prize," these guys definitely went above and beyond to ensure I ended up with a pet that suited my needs/wants and also ensured the best quality of life for the animal. This review is for the grooming services only: I have been taking my dogs here since their whole lives, I have two large very fluffy standard poodles, who require a lot of grooming. I have spent quite a bit of money on grooming services at this location. It has always been worth it though because I knew grooming was a huge part of having poodles and they have always done a decent job. However, over the weekend I noticed my dogs were long overdue for a haircut, so I called and made an appointment for this morning. The lady making the appointment for me said that the earliest I could drop them off would be 9:00 am. I work 8-5 mon-fri but I wanted to get them groomed asap. So I let my boss know that I would be a couple hours late and got their at exactly 9:00. I walked in and waited in the grooming area for about 5 minutes and one of the groomers walked in and said; we had you booked for 8:00 this morning. She then told me that since I was an hour late she could no longer take my dogs. I was shocked, I asked why they did not call me?? I understand miscommunications happen and it was a simple scheduling mistake. However, I do not understand why someone could not have taken the time to make a two minute phone call when I did not show up. I would have been there at 8:00 if they had told me I could come at 8:00 (I would have missed less work). So this morning I had to drive back home and put my dogs away, I lost two hours of pay at work, and I gave my dog walker the day off since they were supposed to be at Petco all day so my dogs are stuck inside the entire day today. I have never had someone be so inconsiderate of my time and of my dogs. This all could have been avoided if they would have called me when I did not show up for my mis-scheduled appointment. I gave them two stars because most of my experiences in the past have been positive, but this morning was the last time I will go to this location :( Horrible service. read more

Well i baught a pair of silicone boots for my dog in another location while on vacation. After countless attempts to get them to stay on.. it wasn't working. this material was not going to stay on. It is Correctly sized and I emphasize my dog walks well in booties. So I came to this location.. after a detailed carwash I no longer had the proof of purchase.. well they didn't try to work with me. Even though it shows on my rewards card it was purchased a week ago and it didn't help they were rude. The cashier wasn't knowledgeable but kind. the manager was loud and very brass. I didn't care for money back i just wanted store credit for a different pair. I'm not tring to scam anyone or trying to go against the system. I JUST want some boots that stay on my dog!
