Not sure if they had a change in employees, but their people are always so sweet and help when they can. They find someone who can answer a question they can't. I'd give them more stars but their leash and collar selection suuuucks maaaan. They don't carry Kong leashes or collars etc. we had to drive to santee (not that its super far, but inconvenient that day) petsmart to finally get my fur babies the perfect Kong harness set they could have. Normally get their Blue brand food here and get a couple training snack items on sale. Wish they'd carry better Bully sticks. Maybe it's because they're such a small store? We definitely needed to get him in today (super last minute) they were the only ones in town willing to squeeze us in. We definitely appreciate it & got a standing appointment for Dobby with Nikki. I walked into Petco and granted you are generally use to how ghetto it looks at Petco, (it ain't no PetSmart!), but what I wasn't use to was the feeling of being in outsider! I literally felt like all the employees looked at me and just stared like I didn't belong! Plus, I made eye contact and gave a head nod to a cashier and he looked at me like I was an alien of some sort! What the fuck? NEVER GET YOUR DOG GROOMED HERE! They shaved my dog because they are LAZY GROOMERS! I have a Chow Chow mix and he doesn't let us brush his back legs for some reason. So, we take him to the groomers every 3-4 months to have them take care of it. I've always taken him to a regular groomer, but we have such busy schedules right now that Petco was unfortunately the only one available when we needed them. I knew from a previous Petco we shouldn't have taken him there, but we did... And, this lady shaved him and didn't even call us!! She even screwed up his mane where there is still some hair left! It's uneven and choppy, like a bowl cut horrible fade! I can do better! We picked him up from the pound where he had horrible matting, and took him straight to a groomer that wasn't lazy and didn't need to shave him! He wasn't even close to being that bad, we just had him groomed 3 months ago! The other groomer and the cashier gave us looks like, "you are totally right, she was wrong and this isn't the first time". She showed NO REMORSE for what she did and still tried to sell us extra services. Not only are they overpriced, but Petco is the Wal-Mart of pet business...they hire anyone. Never again, I'd rather take a day off to get him groomed correctly. read more

Would give zero stars if I could. PLEASE READ before considering purchasing new aquatic companions!!! Wish I could say better because I have always shopped at Petco for all my critters' needs. And this does not go for all Petcos! I have had great experiences at other stores. The staff here is insanely unqualified. My boyfriend took me to this location this Valentine's Day to purchase turtles, which we have both wanted for years. Being a bit (*a lot) of a turtle aficionado, I wanted to give my new red-eared sliders the best home available. So naturally, I asked the store aquatic expert for advice. I will not name names because snitches get stiches But. This "aquatic expert" (expert must be defined quite loosely by Petco La Mesa management...) gave my boyfriend and I completely misleading information. They told us to buy one of those "starter kits" which I was wary of... But they assured us, this would be an excellent environment for the next few years to come. FALSE. Maybe it's great for store sales to push the kits, but CLEARLY this location doesn't give a shit about their animals. My turtles are in a tank currently that is 4x too small for them. I had to rush back the next morning to get $100 worth of crucial supplies that the "expert" failed to mention. Thank GOD they didn't die. But I fear they already suffer from shell rot due to Petco's negligence. :( My boyfriend and I are Petco Pals members, and at other locations, we have been informed by helpful staff about coupons, etc, when applicable. A day or two ago, I noticed larger tanks PERFECT for turtles were HALF OFF in the weekly ad. No mention of this at the time of purchase. Only overwhelming praise for the death camp of starter kits for red-eared sliders. So, overall, we ended up paying MORE ($500+) for a shitty setup than we could have paid for halfway decent living arrangements for our new babies, had the "aquatics expert" not been so GROSSLY unqualified and uninformed. I am seriously disappointed. And I have so much else to say. But this was the number one problem with this location. I don't care if I have to drive to Pacific Beach from now on... At least they KNOW what they are talking about. PLEASE, if you are interested in purchasing fish, aquatic turtles or other amphibians, go to another location. Or do EXTENSIVE research before you go and do not fall into Petco La Mesa's desperate attempts at meeting their sales goals, even at the expense of their animals. read more

Um not a big fan of this location. I was buying some cat food and other items. I was checking out at the register and some strange woman (possibly from the cat adoption people set up there?) started harassing me about the type of cat food I was buying and how cats can't eat that. Horrible! .... took dog once to get nails trimmed...went great....took him back today and the three kids working there were so unprofessional. ..I told them I was furious that they didn't muzzle him like I said they needed to...an one of the fat kids working there jumped in an went off on me saying we are not going to serve u or ur dog...pay and get out....OK first u don't treat customers like that...no matter how angry they are an second...listen to the customer! If they say their pet needs special handling...believe them! This Petco is ok. It has a very limited fish section and overall is small. The staff is helpful, but this might be the worst Petco in San Diego as far as size and amount of items. I could not give it less than 3 stars however since the service is good and they do have the basics for your pet. As with all Petco's though the prices are high, and I only go here if I need the item immediately. read more

Me and my puppy have been training with Nancy and she has been doing a great job so far at teaching pups manners. Customer service was really good! The lady in grooming made it seem like I was going to get a good deal and my dog was getting "the works" as far as grooming. I specifically told her I wanted my dog to have a dr shedding treatment. My dog leaves piles and piles of hair all over my house, you can see the hair falling off of him as he walks around. When I picked him up he still had hair flying everywhere and she said she didn't recommend the de shedding. I feel like I paid a bunch of money for my dog just to smell good. I entered this store around 11:30 on a Friday morning to buy a joint supplement for one of my dogs. When I couldn't find the product I was looking for, I began to look for an employee to help me. There were no employees anywhere near the registers in the front of the store. Standing by the registers, I looked in all directions and could not see a single employee. I then began walking the aisles looking for an employee. When I finally found one, he told me that I would have to "wait" before he could help me. In my case, that meant "continue waiting". I promptly exited the store empty-handed. I can only conclude that this store is not adequately staffed to meet the needs of the people who want to shop there. read more

I would give 5 starts for Frankie who does a great job grooming cats/kittens. Brought our 7 week old kitten in and he had her clipped and and done in 5 minutes with no charge because she was so young. The vets who come in to do the immunizations are fantastic... very knowledgeable and courteous. But three stars because I have to agree with the other yelpers here, customer service in the store is less than stellar and everyone looks like they hate their job. read more

So happy with our experience with the Puppy classes here and Arthur the trainer! Arthur really knows what he is doing. He helped us understand what we need to do to make our life with a new puppy manageable and fun. We haven't had a puppy in years and we were the ones that really needed the training. With the skills we have learned, our puppy, Oliver, is really a well behaved dog. It can be stressful getting a new puppy, without this class we would have been in trouble! I have brought my dog to this location for years and this is the first time I have walked out completely upset. They have been really busy lately and I understand that it may be due to COVID or whatever else. I booked an appointment 2 weeks ago over the phone and walked in today to be asked if I have a current Rabies Vaccine for my dog. I said yes and the guy, Jiovanny asked me for it, and well I didn't have the document on me. I told him that I would have brought the updated form with me if I was reminded to bring it when I booked the appointment 2 weeks ago. Which I clearly was not told. They usually remind you to bring an updated copy when you book the appointment, and again I know that because I have been coming here for years. So I then tell Jiovanny that I live in the building right next door (in the same block literally) and can be back in 10 mins with the form if they will take my dog when I return and he said he can't because he has another dog to take care of. Really though?! Your team member did not tell me about the expired vaccine, I ask for 10 mins to go get it from home and you tell me no because you have another dog to take care of? They literally keep these dogs in the store sitting in a kennel waiting to be worked on and you're telling me you cannot wait because you have another dog in a few minutes. These haircuts don't take 10-15 mins. Sure you have to prepare the dog and you're busy but the fact that he couldn't wait 10 minutes was just ridiculous. He offers to reschedule my appointment and I declined it because I will not be coming back again. A little customer service could have gone a long way, but clearly this location does not care about that at all. If it was altogether my fault in not having a valid rabies vaccine for my dog when I was asked to bring it.. I wouldn't be posting this review. If I also was shown a little bit of courtesy for an additional 10 mins to go and grab my updated record, I also wouldn't be making a comment, but this was just ridiculous to me. read more

Update: I got a call from the manager who literally just called to argue with and comment with "weird" to the situation. He was very unprofessional and rude our whole conversation. Instead of continuing to argue with him because I could see this was going no where and was pointless, I made an attempt to get off the phone to which he replied with "well I was gonna offer a free nail trimming but if you are not interested then..." I was so offended that I declined and stand by my comment that I'm never coming back here. I read Yelp reviews before going here and was really skeptical. But this place was awesome. I found a turtle in my backyard so I needed turtle supplies. Before my visit, I knew nothing about turtles. The young woman that helped me was fantastic. She knew a ton about them and gave me lots of tips on caring for my new little friend. I frequently visit this Petco to pick up cat and fish supplies, and the employees are always courteous and eager to help. I had a question about how to treat one of my bettas that was sick, and the employee directed me to the treatment options and told me about each one. Within a week, my betta was better. I also like their selection of cat food. It seems they have a wide variety of options, and they are always well-stocked. I have never utilized their grooming or Vetco services, but I am not surprised at the reviews. Folks- if you want quality, you can't go to Petco expecting to receive 5-star, personalized manicuring and grooming services. If you want prim and posh grooming, fork out the extra change and take your pet to an independent groomer in the area. There are plenty that do a great job and take the time to get to know you and your pet. read more

I am writing regarding the grooming services. The people who work here tend to be nice and friendly. I have never had my dog mistreated (to my knowledge). Grooming my dog is simple, just shave it all even. In the past when I have asked for more specific cuts I find that it does not turn out very well. It depends on who you get as a groomer as well. The products they use vary. Sometimes they put a bandana, sometimes they put this fragrant smelling stuff after he's groomed. Aside from being shaved even, I am not sure what we'll get. This last time I took him to get groomed we had them brush his teeth, I believe it was $20. I was very please with the service. They did a great job and his gums did not seem to be irritated at all which was a concern of mine. Overall, I would continue to bring him here for the grooming services and now, the teeth cleaning. More so because it is affordable and conveinient and they do an Ok job all around. read more

The inability or unwillingness of the store manager ("out to lunch" apparently) to accommodate the Petco K-9 deal when "supplies ran out" certainly raises a question about the brand. Hiding behind "policy" when a simple accommodation could be made simply erodes customer satisfaction. Brand/Store loyalty depends on deals being honored. La Mesa Petco seems unable to grasp this basic business tenet. read more

I have been taking my dogs to Petco in La Mesa for grooming for over 3 years and always ask for Michelle. SHE IS AWESOME ...does a great job and is obviously an animal lover. Very sweet person. La Mesa Petco grooming is always able to set appointments for me when I need them. They love my dog,Tedi, and she loves them right back. We go over what I need done on Tedi and they always follow through. I am so glad the groomers are there for us. read more

Tend to go to this location and the staff are way more helpful than at the a Sports Arena location. Have made several purchases of tetras and every time have had a great experience. Actually tried to use a coupon tonight and the cashier very politely pointed out that is was not valid yet. I am so disappointed in the customer service here. So disappointed I won't be back. I made a purchase of 2 brushing gloves in June. One for my indoor cat and one for the homeless cat that adopted me. One liked it the other ran from it. They wouldn't return due to Covid and I understood that policy. I held on to the glove and receipt. At my last purchase time I asked the cashier if they were taking returns yet and he said yes. A week ago I attempted to return and was told no. The manager came to inform me that the window of returns had closed. Why didn't the cashier tell me that when questioned? It's not the dollar amount, it's the principle. This 2020 hasn't been hard enough that you can't be flexible over a return? Brand new, had a receipt. I informed the manager that they are not the only pet supply in this city and I wouldn't be back. I ran into my sweet UPS driver on my way out. Told him about it and that my cat ran from it. His friend recently rescued a chihuahua. I hope she enjoys it read more
