I've been buying cat litter from the big bulk bin for years. The consistency is like sand. It clumps very well and is soft enough under my cat's feet. Now the bulk litter has changed. It's more like gravel with black spots so it looks dirty before my cat even uses it. Plus it's course and my cat doesn't like it. I spoke with a few employees who told me they get countless complaints about this new crappy litter and they've turned in numerous complaint tickets to the corporate pinheads who keep telling them "It depends where the litter is shipped from". The employees than ask to please just deal with the place that ships the good litter. It's infuriating how the idiots in charge don't listen to their employees in the store; the ones who have to deal with all the complaints from angry customers. I call every week to ask if they got the good litter in and every week I'm told no. I hate Petco. They obviously don't care about their customers nor their employees. That's it for me. I'm done. I'll buy my litter elsewhere. Goodbye Petco. read more

If I could give no stars I would. Came here for the $20 dog wash. There is no temperature control for the water so my dog got blasted with icy cold water for the first 5 minutes. But the worst part was the black mold on the grout and the pathetic dryers that are not high velocity. They had the strength of a human hair dryer on low. This resulted in me straining my back and making my poor senior dog have to be at the facility longer than she would have been if they had the right equipment. Petco has plenty of money to invest in High Velocity dryers for their dog wash. Save your 20 bucks and go elsewhere. I will never return to this location read more

These guys are pretty good. Friendly employees and an excellent selection of fish and assorted fury creatures (including birdies). Store is laid out well with plenty of isle space. The store also does a good job of keeping supplies in stock. This facility has a full dog washing center that allows you to shampoo your pooch and dry them off nice and neat. You may adopt dogs and cats as well. The staff here really love animals and that's really nice to see, because not every pet store has true animal lovers as you might think. Recommended. read more

I used the self service dog wash station and I do think it is a lot better than breaking your back at home. However, I went to the Escondido location (first time) and they have 4 washing tubs. There was one other person using one of the tubs, but I still had to wait for the girl to clean one for me to use. She never told me how the process went, she just set a basket down that had 2 little towels, shampoo, rinse and 2 brushes and she walked away. Apparently they have plastic aprons so you don't get drenched but I didn't see them until I was done. I recommend bringing your own supplies as theirs are not very impressive. Also- be careful with securing your pet once you get them in the wash area. I never did figure out the funky set up they had going. I ended up having to hold onto my dog while trying to scrub her. I would have given 5 stars if they actually had someone around to man the area that was even remotely friendly or informative. It was $20 total cost. Cheaper than a groomer. I'm going to try a different place next time. I tried to let the store manager know about my experience, he had no interest in hearing it. The store has zero pep or personality from what I saw. I take my dogs to get groomed here and get all their supplies not a bad pet Co. very clean very well-maintained the grooming staff can be a little uninviting at times but it's not a dealbreaker just yet I just appreciate how well-maintained this Petco is. They always get new supplies for dogs leashes, food, new bedding almost always makes you want to spend money! The grooming side gets very busy so definitely schedule an appointment ahead of time if you can get a second one because nine out of 10 times you will not get a same day appointment let alone within the same week! read more

Ive been coming to this petco for everything since I adopted my new puppy. I bring him to the vet, the groomer, and puppy playtime classes and everything has always been wonderful. I decided to sign up for the puppy package on the phone and spoke to Chris the "lead dog trainer" and my perspective of the entire store changed. He was so arrogant and dismissive. He claims that he is extremely busy with his outside life and couldn't have the patience to answer my questions. He pressured me into signing up on a day of his choosing that would only work well with his schedule since he "has been a trainer for 15+ years" I don't know why he kept rubbing this in my face. Chris should try to be nicer and less cocky to people who want to pay for his services. Its a shame everybody else at petco is extremely sweet including Luis the other trainer, and Chris is the one in charge of the dog training. I guess all of his years of experience have only brought him to feel burnt out and not interested in genuinely caring for dog training. Meeting Chris in person did not make a difference either. I hope he gets re-trained in basic customer service or I would not trust him with your dogs. read more

I was really bummed today to find out I could not buy a goldfish. I have a 15 gallon tank in my classroom that I grow plants on top of. I've been doing this for 5 years with great success and have maybe lost two goldfish the entire time! However today I was told I could not buy one more goldfish and I find that absolutely ridiculous! Is there a goldfish shortage? Are we worried about an endangered species? Do goldfish have rights? The associate could not really explain the policy and honestly was very short with me. Do not train here especially with Cristan. Highly dissatisfied with the costumer service I received at this location. I received a call earlier this week on my dog's second session. I was set for Saturday at 4pm, so I instantly set it in my calendar. I show up on time and the trainer is there and stating that there was no appointment set. The trainer was not busy, her next appointment was at 5pm. She told me to next available spot to fill me in was 2 weeks days later. It's extremely upsetting, especially since it's in the middle of the day on Saturday. My day is pretty much blocked off for this session. I asked to speak with a manager, Tim, who was dismissive and insinuating it was my error. I no longer wished to continue my services at this location especially with Cristan. Tim told me I could arrange somewhere else by calling costumer service since the sessions were purchased online. I am on the phone with costumer service and they tell me I have to get that situated with the store. This disconnect with information is so frustrating. Costumer service calls on my behalf to explain the disconnect on information. The store do not answer Petco costumer service, and I do not understand why because on my end i have always been able to reach them. Please treat your costumers better after spending hundreds of dollars for these sessions. Please improve your systems. read more

That said, I have nothing but great things to say about Jordan. He has gone above and beyond to make a negative experience into a very positive one. Jordan is kind, understanding and able to make things right. Jordan has excellent communication skills and is always sure to follow up on his commitments. Disappointed with the do-it-yourself dog wash. Everywhere was wet, and the tub not easy for a large dog to get into. The water pressure is terrible, took forever just to get my dog's fur thoroughly wet. There is a button to push when you're ready for shampoo, but none came out. No suds, no shampoo smell even, but the clerk insisted "yes there's soap, it's in the water, it's just low-foaming, so you can't tell." Or, maybe it was EMPTY? (BRING YOUR OWN SHAMPOO) The "dryer" was a joke. My own hair dryer would have been more effective. The three threadbare towels they provided weren't much help either. I wish I could explain the rage I feel right now. Do not go here! The grooming department version of grooming is literally shaving down your dog. My dog is mixed breed poodle and has long hair. All I requested was just a little taken off and to clean up his face. They shaved his entire body. They were even planning on shaving his face bare until I was adamant that I did not want that . As soon as I saw him, I was crying angry tears. They placed blame on my dog stating that he is inexperienced with grooming, unbeknownst to him, he gets groomed literally monthly. The only reason why I went here is because petco is the only place open right now due to the corona virus . Dog parents, don't do it. We have been bringing our dog To this location since he was born, almost 4 years ago. Yesterday, we were told he was "uncooperative" and aggressive, and tried to bite a groomer. Of course, we questioned what was different since he has never done that, but alas they had no answer, and didn't even acknowledged how out of the ordinary that would be, for a dog to do "all of a sudden". Nonetheless, he was unceremoniously banned. Just like that! Which is very interesting, considering we've been very unsatisfied with the service lately. The personnel seems to be different; Not as experienced, and with a breed like ours, Akita, you need someone who knows what they're doing. Love, love, LOVE the new self wash facility at Petco! I bring three of my furkids to wash. The only thing that keeps me from rating a five is the weaker blowing dryers in te self wash. Pro: Provides a basket with two brushes, apron and a towel (more are provided upon request). The bath area has shampoo (adult and puppy) and conditioner. It's ample for any size dogs. And i like that there's harnesses to secure my pooch to the tub. Con: There are two speeds for the dryer - high and low. For my dogs that have a decent about of fur, it takes WAY to dry even at the high speed. Inside the grooming area there are more powerful dryers which Would be nice to have in the self wash area. The quicker that people can dry their fuzzy pets and wrap up with the bath, the more people that can take advantage of this new feature! read more

Their self dog wash is ok, water pressure and temp are good, I brought my own soap so idk how theirs is, but let me tell you how sad of a 'force dryer' they have.....if you have any type of double coated dog STAY AWAY!!! I came in this evening to get a fish that eats algae for my take. The guy that was working in the fish area was helping another customer when I got there. I literally stood in front of his counter for 20 minutes waiting for him to finish. Finally, when he was done he walked past me and went and helped a customer that had come just done. I was irate. Another disappointing experience in grooming. 1:00 appt for wash only. I arrived to get him at 3:30 and realized he hadn't been bathed yet. When they told me I'd have to wait 25 minutes I demanded they bring him out. He was wet and didn't smell clean. I'm assuming they quickly dunked him and quick towel dry. I've been coming here since I got my puppy last December and the employees here have always helped me with anything I needed and I've taken Lucie (my dog) to puppy training here and it was always great experience. I bring Lucie here every other month for her grooming and bath and the girls are AMAZING because Lucie is one stubborn and strong German Shepherd Husky and the girls that groom her always try and be gentle with her. My dog knows when it's bath time and she is not happy when I come and drop her off but when it is time for pick up she comes out super happy, fluffy and clean! I'm really glad the this Petco has such great employees that are always willing to help me and my dog have a good experience when we come in. read more

Sometimes an employee can make all the difference. Today I went to petco to buy a fish tank and some other supplies. My son is 2 and wasn't having it. I hastily paid and loaded up my car. Once in the car I realized I over paid for an item. It got me looking online and I coukd save $60 on what I just bought if I ordered it online and did store pick up. So I begrudgingly unloaded my unhappy kids and went in to return what I had just bought. I walked into the store an a different cashier was that the register. But she was amazing. I told her I was sorry and explained what I was going to do and she happily helped me out. Held onto my items so when i did order it online it would be ready very quickly. She talked to my kids and told them to be nice to mommy, I think she could tell I was having a day. When I got my email that my order was ready I called and did curbside, this sweet gal answered the phone and brought it out to me with a smile. She talked to my kids once more and waved us goodbye with a smile. I didn't get her name but my order said Cori on it, so I think that may be her name. Thank you for being such a sweet person and making a hard shopping trip with kids just a little bit easier;) read more

WTF they were rude to us, did not keep shot records from the last time we visited then accused us of not having the first round of shots. These guys can't keep track, make us wait too long and also try to encourage people to give their dogs away. We've seen this with two different dogs over the years. Came in to have my dog washed and nails trimmed. They told me my rabies vaccination has expired. I told the gentleman I will run to my vet and have it done super fast. He said okay and I left. Went to get the rabies shots came back and then the same gentleman calls up a ladies to tell me I can not have my dog groomed because we have to wait 24hrs. I was irritated and said okay and started to leave when the lady at the counter rudely said have a great day. Horrible service could give more detail but would rather not waste my energy. Don't like the chain pet stores much. Among them I've settled on Petco. My dog has food allergies so I'm forced to buy a specific, and of course expensive, food. I come in each month and buy the huge bag. Petco has a competitive price on it so that's not my beef. The store is relatively clean and the staff friendly, that's not my beef. Here's what REALLY aggravates the crap out of me. About 1/4 of the whole store is comprised of the 1000 brands of dog food. I suppose it's good that there's a wide choice. The problem is that Petco has some compulsive need to rearrange the whole dog food selection on a regular, seems like monthly, basis. What makes it worse is that it doesn't appear to follow any logical method. I get that they're trying to maximize their merchandizing but I'm not sure they realize that they're frustrating the hell out of regular customers. I'm left to do an extended search for the same thing I buy every month or find a staff member. The staff is also frustrated with this regular change and say the 're-arrange' order comes from above. Message to layout manager wherever you are in your cubicle: STOP rearranging the damn store and let me buy my dog food in peace! read more

What where they thinking, the corporate offices of Petco have a "new" companion contract for all feeder mice for snakes. Now you have to agree to this contract - Which not only words Companin, Contract and Responsibility, it also requires your signature. This not only opens you up to a lawsuit by petco and/or PETA if they feel you did not take care of the feeder properly, it also makes you feel guilty for purchasing this feeder for food. I am not sure I understand the logic on this from PETCO's part, if you need to cover your butt so badly, have a feeder contract that says you will take care of the pet until it's death, ultimately it will die anyway. Does PETCO think that more people are buying mice to have as pets vs. feeding their snake? Maybe they want us to make our snakes vegetarians! I think this is poor showmanship on the corporate level. In any case, think hard about signing that document, in my case I won't be going to petco any longer. Instead I will give my local reptile store my business because I know they won't sue me! I do want to add, the staff at this particular store, while friendly are slow to help and the manager handed off doing his job to an employee instead of helping me while i stood right in front of him. In the tie it took to get the employee, train her and hand me a mouse i would not be able to leave with, the manager could have avoided all that by helping me right away. Home Depot has been dethroned. I actually thought the store on West Valley Parkway in Escondido had the worst service ever. Hail to the new king. The grooming department at Petco down the street has the most incompetent service ever. Last week, I went there to get my dog's nails trimmed. The guy ahead of me didn't have a rabies shot listed on his dog's vaccine record. The lady behind the counter called the vet's office and there was no record there either. So instead of saying, "I'm sorry, we cannot groom your dog, you'll have to work it out with your vet because the shot is required," the groomer continually repeated herself over and over and the customer just stood there nodding. After waiting for twenty minutes or so, I left and went to PetSmart. But the groomer there told me that my record was out of date by a few days so I had to have her vaccinated again. I had her vaccinated and came back but found out I had to wait 48 hours. It's all bs. I used to work as a vet assistant and rabies outbreaks do not exist in dogs anymore. Vaccines last for three years, but the urges us to get our dogs vaccinated once a year so it can make more money. A few days later, I went back to Petco. The lady behind the counter had to link the service to my Petco card. I didn't remember the number I had years ago and the card is under my husband's name. She tried to look up my last name even though I told her the card was under his. She made a big deal out of the fact that the name on the card was different than the name on the shot record. It wasn't my shot record, it was the dog's and she fits the description of a Chihuahua. I blew up. It should not be harder to get your nails trimmed than it is to get on Camp Pendleton. I would let the manager explain because I don't care about the reasoning. The cards are a hassle and I should not be inconvenienced for not wanting to use one. I paid five dollars more at PetSmart on Escondido Blvd. but the service was much better. On the way home, I stopped at Petco and dropped the receit from PetSmart off for the manager. The employee named Paige took it and laughed. It's nice to know that customer service is a joke in that store. That is why I'm not going back. read more

My review is for the grooming. I'm also going to be upfront, my fur babies are very important & I'm not willing to take them somewhere that won't treat them right. With that said, we've had our dogs (a 7lb rescue poodle with bad anxiety & a 15 lb maltipoo who's a grump) groomed here twice & they've looked great both times. I was really impressed with their haircuts & their happy disposition when I picked them up. The price is right too - about $50 each & that includes their nails being trimmed. All & all I would recommend taking your pets here. read more
