Honestly I was debating on writing this review because I love the doctors at the facility. But today went I went in the guy at the front desk was the worst. When I was waiting for my pet he was watching a football game on the computer screen and was on his phone as well. I am sure I was not the only one who noticed. When it was time to check me out it was like I was bothering him for his screen. Now I'm worried about if the team in the back does the same while treating my pet. I'm disappointed. Update: Still no call from corporate which means Petco was in the wrong. If you have nothing to hide show us the tapes. We ended up taking our dog to PetSmart in Escondido and they had no issues with him. My husband said since it was his first time at PetSmart they did check him but they were not being rough with our dog. I am disappointed with the way my dog was treated. He was made out to be the bad guy and we have been taking him to the Petco groomers for YEARSSSS! smh. read more

I (was) a long time customer who will no longer be using this location for any pet services or supplies. Probably will choose to never use Petco again frankly. The environment and managerial staff need re-training in how to keep the customer at the front of their decision-making choices and policies. This location has been declining over the last few years, and after the experiences at this location within the last 60 days (on both the vet and supply sides of the store, including the dog wash) - this is one of the last places I would now ever take my pet for care, or give my money to support, for our animal care and upkeep. There are too many options to be treated as unkindly, disparagingly, and dismissively that we have both experienced personally, and been witness to observing towards other customers, to spend our precious time or hard-earned money here. I am sure the culture of each site is dependent on the management - but this store is sadly lacking in the common sense and courtesy that would keep new OR long-term customers to repeatedly continue walking through their doors. A few days ago I wanted to purchase a couple goldfish for my tank I set up with my son,Maria the person working the fish area told me the complete opposite I was told in another store and told me why having goldfish in a small tank was not a great idea. Before being helped I heard her talking to two teachers and a group of students about their class tank and it was a similar situation, she was answering all their questions and they left happy with different fish they ended up going with. I had my tank for 1 day and she recommended I let my tank sit for a few more days before bringing back some water to test and see if was ready for fish yet, I didn't really understand but trusted the process. She helped my tank be prepared and helped find what fish were best for my 10 gallon and we ended up going for some mollies. She was super helpful and very informative, great attitude! Will definitely be coming back to purchase more fish! read more

I was denied service at the fish area, first of, by an employee who seemed like he didn't want to be there. All because I said I had a 5 gallon tank ? Even after I said I was thinking of upgrading to a larger tank. Who is this guy to decide what I have or don't have at home? "I have the right to refuse service" he said. For what ? You mean to tell me he makes sure everyone buying fish has a 20 gallon tank ? I wasn't even rude to the guy. And you what sucks the most ? He couldn't even look me in the eye. Stopped by as I was in the area and wanted to get an Xmas gift for the dog (I know - how sad/lame of a sentence was that). Ended up buying a beta fish for my nephews instead (as a surprise gift). I had to find someone to help me since I had no clue what to buy for food, etc. I thought I could walk out the door with a beta fish for like $10. Remember the good ol' days when this fish was super cheap and affordable. Well, not now. The one I bought was $19.99 (it was called Bumble Bee male). Then, this girl said I had to buy special beta food, special conditioner for the water (since the fish will, and I quote, DIE in regular tap water), rocks for the fish bowl, and a fish bowl (since I'm sure the poor Beta doesn't like the small plastic soup bowl it's currently in). They didn't have any fish bowl that I liked so i bought the rest of the recommendations. I think it was almost $40 out the door. This location is going through a remodel so it's not the prettiest. The cashier was ok - kept asking for my petco card # which I don't have and honestly don't need if NONE of the items aren't on sale. All in all, an ok location if you're in the area. AND , most importantly 1) kids loved the beta fish and 2) the fish is still alive today. read more

Came in to buy some food for my fish, and found multiple dead or dying betta fish lying sick inside their cups. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon sight in pet stores, but this was extreme, especially compared to previous trips to this store. I found one who had severe fin rot and decided to take him home, but when I expressed my concern, the manager basically said that it's impossible for any of the fish to have fin rot, because any sick fish are pulled from the shelves, treated and then put back on the shelves. This was such a obvious lie- I had been in the store just the day before and had noticed 3 fish who had pretty obvious swim bladder issues, one of whom was laying dead at the bottom of her container when I went back the next day. Even if they are trying to heal sick fish, it's not working. Maybe it's more profitable to write off dead fish, I don't know. Anyway, I took the betta home, and after a course of OTC aquarium medication and daily water changes, he's growing his fins back beautifully. Regardless of what the manager said to save face, it was fin rot. It just was. His fins were so extremely decayed that this beautiful deltatail looked like a plakat. He had over half his tail missing and was so sick he wasn't even eating for days (bettas can be huge gluttons, so this was concerning) until he started to heal. Absolutely do not come here if you care about animals. Such a shame because they used to have such healthy fish, must have gotten new management or something, because the people in aquatics are usually quite knowledgeable compared to other stores, and you can tell *they* really care. I want to make it clear I'm only frustrated with management here, most of the employees are great. read more

For a first time fish tank this Petco can't be beat. Their fish department is very informative and they make sure you're doing everything on your end to make sure the fish will prosper. If the fish don't have proper home they won't sell you any fish. Eddie is great in the fish department. Today I bought a GKM9W which is a UV filter for my fish tank. I went online like I normally do to check near by stores for inventory. I found what I was looking for here in the Escondido location. It was reasonably priced online at $36.63 which the original price was $74.99.........didn't think anything of it. I arrived at the location to find it on the shelf at the 74.99 price ‍. I took the item up to the cashier and showed her( elderly lady Maggie looking at receipt) that the price was indeed different from the price online and asked her why. Only response she gave me was would you like to price match and nothing more. I was at this time a little confused as to why my question wasn't answered and the careless attitude was completely present. The reason for the bad review is the price doesn't match and I couldn't find it anywhere on your website that I had to buy a membership to get the said price. first of all I called in for a cat food medication he said yeah I'll bring your script in here before six or we can't help!so i there at 550pm and I asked the veterinarian to help me With this prescription I got from the veterinarian specialty hospital. I've got a stack of paperwork with it, but since it was 5:50PM on a Friday she couldn't help me... because there was no ending date on the prescription. Sounds like A lot of bull because it's a Friday at 5:50 PM. She's going home and she didn't wanna help me. I will never shop here again. My cat is sick. He needs this medication and I can't get it anywhere else until Monday. my cat probably will die. Thank you. read more

I am very pleased with the dog training at the Petco in Escondido. Nicole was the trainer and she is very experienced and professional.

We've used this Petco groomers several times and other Petco locations before. Our dog is a small mix breed who has never had any issues whatsoever anywhere. We went in for a routine grooming with a new to us groomer, Tatiana. Received a call 2 hours after the appointment requesting to pick up our dog as the service couldn't be completed. This was surprising to us but we went to pick him up. The groomer explained he was having difficulty and tried to bite her. This is shocking and a bit questionable as that has never happened before. The groomer then tells us he is *forever banned from any petco grooming service*. Obviously we made a complaint. We received a call from the assistant manager who basically said it's the groomer's call. So after years of going to petco groomers we are now banned from one groomer's experience with our dog one time. Lots of other options out there, I'd recommend looking elsewhere for grooming. read more

I am disabled, but I am younger and I look "normal," because all my scars are along my spine. The only man working at the counter today was named Larry. I just mentioned to him in passing that I was having a hard day because of pain, but I said I was faking it the best I could, and I was trying really hard to smile. When he finished checking me out, and he asked me what my name was. He had his name tag on, so I gladly gave him my name. After doing so he said, ma'am, I'm going to be praying for you. I pray that physical rehab will help you. In world full of such mean, angry, hateful and hostile people, try to be a "Larry." Thank you, Larry. As I mentioned, I'll be praying for you, as well. I cannot say enough good things about this Petco and the staff! We started coming here for "socialization" with our 2 month old Dalmatian Puppy and were immediately welcomed by all of the staff , from the Vet, to the trainers, to the groomers have been given such valuable 5 star service all the way. Our pup is now 7 months and we are still in Pet Co weekly for either grooming with Superstar Haley, or training classes with Chris. Because of this wonderful Petco staff our Dalmatian "Coco Chanel" is a confident, friendly, well trained member of our family. Coco competes in Dog Shows and last weekend was entered in a 3 day show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This is a very large, loud, indoor dog show and we are proud to say Miss Coco held herself together like a superstar, she wanted to meet everyone and every dog she saw. We thank the entire staff at Petco for helping us raise such a confident pup. A special 5 stars for Haley in grooming who has so lovingly worked with Coco from the start getting her used to baths and bi weekly nail trimmings. And also to Chris in our training classes who really helped with our walking on a leash issues! read more

This review is for the fish department. I see other reviewers have had negative experiences where their dogs were abused here, and I believe them. Just your average Petco, but they carry aquarium supplies not found at other Petco locations. They also sell corals, but they didn't appear to be in the healthiest condition. More varieties of fish than other Petco locations. But I would rather buy from a local small business that has experienced people caring for their fish. read more

We really enjoy this location as it is close to our house and very easy to stop in and get pet supplies for our dog and cat. The only criticism I have is the recent long term renovation that seems to be going on here, and it seems to have disrupted the supply chain. We have be having a harder time getting our favorite raw hide products (Better Belly) lately, and are hoping that the stock increases here as it is one of the main staples of our visits. The inexpensive stuffed chew toys in the seasonal aisle are a favorite for our black lab...and she really enjoys visiting here. The pricing is consistent with other pet supply locations, and we appreciate Petco's support of the San Diego community with Petco Park etc. read more

Terrible experience grooming our dog. They called and cancelled it after our dog had already been there for 2 hrs and still tried to charge me for the bath and materials fee. They did not complete the job of dematting and shaving our dog, as agreed upon. They made every excuse as to why they were cancelling it. They truly just did not want to groom my dog. I was "helped" by employee Eman and he was rude and acted as if it was too much to assist to get me some fishes. When I approached him I obviously knew he was helping someone so when he stepped aside to grab something I asked him "when you get a chance could you help me get some fish please?" And he half glanced at me and said "I'm already with someone" and walked away. We decided to take our dog to the Escondido location after having a horrible experience with the San Marcos one before they closed down. The San Marcos groomer over shaved him to the point where you can just see his pink skin and some cuts and they were so rough on his ears it caused them to get irritated. They were nice enough to have the vet check him and prescribe him medication. At the time I thought it was just an inexperienced groomers fault so this time we went to Escondido. Unfortunately the same thing happened, Thank goodness they didn't over shave him again this time but they seem to keep being so rough on the ears. Which doesn't make sense to me if they have notes of what happened last time ( they admitted they have notes) you would think they would try to be more gentle. I'm not trusting petcos groomers again. read more

I have made at least 4 trips to my Petco in Escondido in the last month or so to buy my dogs food & everytime I go they are out of the large bag of Canidae Pure Salmon & Sweet Potato recipe. I have a 95 lb dog & the 4 lb bag they have in stock does not cut it. I signed up for the Vital Care Premier membership so I could get a monthly discount on the $70 bag of dog food that I buy. I have not been able to utilize my discount because the food is not available in the store & is also not available for me to order online. I have had this issue in the past but it lasted a few months & then was resolved. However, the last few months the large bag is not in stock or available online so I drive 1.5 miles to Petsmart, while leaving $45+ money in rewards aging in my account that I cannot use or I have to buy online from Chewy. So, how is it a retailer 1.5 miles from Petco has the food in stock or an online retailer has it in stock but Petco has zero large bags in stock. Kind of mind boggling. read more

Ever since they changed the layout (and I assume have been more negligent on actually verifying employees are certified to work with dogs) my dog comes home from grooming appointments with "bad behavior" remarks. There are all kinds of new ways he's been "uncooperative" with them or has been "misbehaving". The staff never has ANY idea how that could've possibly happened. He's just magically now acting completely out of character. Dogs don't do things out of their normal routine for no reason at all, and I would assume that the people who are paid to work correctly with pets would know that. My dog is an aggressive breed, but we've trained him to be friendly with people and to mind his business around things that could irritate him. He's consistent and will cooperate so long as things are as they should be. Yesterday he was banned for more bad behavior (which in and of itself is laughable because we were giving Petco one last chance before we left them completely as they've done so poorly with him) and, surprise surprise, the staff doesn't know anything that could've set him off. I know how these things work: you hire people who are "dog lovers" who think every dog they'll deal with is going to be a happy-go-lucky golden retriever and don't understand how to deal with other breeds that don't "go with the flow". My dog and LOTS of other dogs that don't fit the mould require focus and professionalism when dealing with grooming them as that process can make dogs nervous. I won't go here again because I'm not allowed to but as a warning to other dog owners who have dogs that might get irritated if you treat them willy nilly: DONT GO HERE! They'll be reckless with your dog and then blame YOU lol. Update to Petco responding to me: Thanks for the absolutely generic response to show your "deep concern" for my issue but, if you read the post, you would know that there's no way I'll come back to your store because you banned my dog??? Remember that? Also my dog now will not let ANYONE groom him because of whatever trauma you guys have caused him. Thanks Petco. read more

Im going to be as nice as possible only because I got remorse and kindness from Chris the dog trainer, and eventually understanding from the store manager Jordy, and got a full refund from Petco for what Cydney the dog trainer said and did to me and my 6 month old puppy who is a working line german shepherd. Please Beware of dog trainer Cydney. Broken promises and bad trainer. Should be fired, very very very unprofessional on her approach to talk to Me on my lunch break! She slightly maybe can train little dogs, but as far as real obiendience definitely go and pay a trainer that specializes in your breed. This is what I have learned from Cydney: sit, down stay, come, and touch in 6 weeks. I taught shake which she hasn't taught the class. Thats about it. No leash manners at all. Anyways Jordy said my puppy so 'aggressive' and petco policy has to fire my dog either tho Jordy said once a trainer fires you it's their decision. So okay it's Cydney decision due to her not knowing how to properly train a German shep puppy, not petco. He said my puppies temperament of being hyper and 'leash reactive isn't petco policy so your policy isn't training a oh wait 6 month old puppy who's still learning manners. Sounds like excuses due to your trainer not knowing how to be a good trainer. Cydney said he's leash reactive and aggressive but he goes to daycare, dog beach and dog parks. She fired us from puppy training 'classes' said he is 'leash reactive', but didn't see what actually happened when he supposely did bark at another dog. My pup isn't aggressive. He just wanted to meet another dog and 'bark' and meet. But petco trainer once again said she doesn't let them meet rn due to "Covid" also I told her he 'had' water habit. Liked to protect it, which he hasn't shown since he was 10 weeks old and been training with him every day. And not once did she warn me about anything. When she called she gave me 2 options private or money back. That's it. Not move to another class with other pets or anything to work with me, she clearly gave up on my puppy due to him being a big 60 pound pup.. Period. I said to her when I signed him up at 8 weeks. I'm a new time doggy mom and please don't give up on him. She said absolutely not. False, I don't recommend taking your puppy to Cydney. Now Chris is a diffeent story. He's a great person and and a great dog trainer who knows what he's talking about, very knowledgeable, respectful and listened to my concerns. My family is soon becoming the owner of a staffordshire bull terrier. As a new pet owner it can be overwhelming. Although we've done research on how to prepare for a puppy, we received excellent recommendations and information from Jordy. Talk about a professional and really helpful individual. Our puppy is 8 weeks old and we thought buying a crate that would fit his size (small), would make sense, however Jordy said buying a large crate and using a divider would be a better investment. With the divider in place, our puppy would comfortably occupy the small and when he grows bigger we would remove the divider. Jordy said already buying the larger crate would prevent us buying two. Secondly, Jordy asked us if we knew how long a puppy should stay in the crate? We didn't know the rule of thumb. You take the dogs age in months and add one. Our puppy is 8 weeks (2 months) + one. Therefore our puppy should be in crate no more than 3 hours and then he has to be let out to relieve himself. Then he can return to the crate for another 3 hours and then take another potty break. Lastly, Jordy said using shampoo/conditioner with oats or aloe vera was highly recommended. WOW, all good info, and Jordy provided an educational experience. The next employee, Maria was so helpful in providing information on becoming a rewards member. It was awesome finding out the all our receipts would be stored in our account, and that we would receive emails on promotions and important updates. We signed up at checkout. Maria's positive attitude, and kindness was greatly appreciated. Really a rock star employee. If I could give this store 10 stars, I would. Jordy and Maria made our experience phenomenal. We will absolutely return, and are so happy that Petco is our new go to place to help raise our puppy the right way. Thank you Petco for hiring employees that really care and enjoy helping families. read more
