We are banned from bringing our sweet Bichon Frise to Petco in Clark, NJ. You be the judge if this is fair. We have been bringing our dog, now age 5, to Petco in Clark for grooming since the store opened in 2015. When we first brought him here, we told the staff that he sometimes has itchy skin due to allergies, and that we prefer they not use perfumed soaps. In June of 2017, after almost two years of great service and predictably good haircuts (and A LOT of money spent on products and services), our dog came home with razor burn on his butt (below his tail). It looked sensitive, and our dog kept trying to lick it. We did not call to complain because we thought that, in a day or two, it would heal naturally as his hair grew back. As the week went on, it became apparent that we needed to take him to the vet (Westfield Animal Hospital on South Avenue in Garwood). Guess what? Our veterinarian absolutely agreed that our dog had razor burn. We were charged for this visit and had to put our dog on anti-itch meds and antibiotics. LOTS more money spent. Well, we've been paying Petco for multiple grooming sessions over the years and giving 10-15% tips, so we figured we would call Petco to let them know that the groomer assigned to our dog that day had shaved him too close and gave him an expensive case of razor burn. You know what they said? They said, "Your dog has allergies and itchy skin. That's what you told us - it's in our records." Maybe we're naïve, but we were hoping for an apology and maybe 10% off of our next grooming appointment. It would have been REALLY nice and even more appropriate if they had picked up the vet bill and gave us our next grooming session for free. But you know what we got? That's right: BANNED from stinking Petco in Clark. Okay, to be fair, when my husband was accused of having an itchy dog, he was not too pleased with the manager who refused to take any ownership or responsibility for either the razor burn or the snip-happy groomer, so he raised his voice (he NEVER curses or condescends). He merely stated, "Don't tell me that it was just itchy skin and allergies. This was razor burn and we have the vet bill to prove it)! My, my, that is certainly a terrible threat and grounds for being BANNED. Oh, yes, I forgot: we would like you to be the judge. So, do you think Petco was right to ban us, or is Petco in Clark to blame for being too quick to cover up when they make a costly and painful mistake on someone's pet? read more

My guinea pig was not doing well. I brought him back to the store and I spoked with a girl name Celena/Selena. She has been very helpful in keeping me up to date on my guinea pig. I was able to take him home yesterday and I cannot say enough about her customer service and handling my guinea pig made me speechless. I know this store is very helpful. Do NOT get your pet groomed at this location! Never a great experience with regard to finding a convenient time and they tend to over book so your pet is there longer than necessary. However, our visit yesterday will be the last ever. The groomer snipped our dog's tongue with scissors resulting in an emergency visit to the vet. There was very heavy bleeding, medication needed and my dog is now wearing a cone and will not eat or drink. Not only was the groomer obviously inexperienced, and as if this whole experience was not bad enough, what made it worse was whomever made the initial call to us from PetCo stated, several times, that our dog must have "licked the blade" . It is inexcusable to try and blame the dog for this serious mistake but the vet said in no uncertain terms that our dog's tongue was cut by scissors. Inexcusable mistake, even more inexcusable how it was handled. PetCo train your groomers!!! read more

The rating is for VETCO not Petco, I took my morkie (whom was adopted from this location) to get a rabies vac and microchipped. A few hours later I feel something something sticking out of his back, low and behold it was his microchip! I put aside the vet assistant's rude comments to my 5 pound dog about there "being a problem" if he were to bite her (with his baby teeth and he doesn't bite anyway), that's not how you treat animals especially when of course they are fearful of getting needles stuck into them just like a baby would. You're supposed to be calming, instead she had a lot to say about him negatively. Instead of being inhospitable, they really need to make sure that they know what they are doing. My dog was in pain after getting injected with a huge needle and turns out it was for NO REASON. I don't even want them to fix it, instead I will be asking for my money back because I refuse to allow them to touch him a second time. I'll take him to an actual vet where they know what they're doing and actually know how to talk to pets and paying customers. Highly disappointed! read more

Terrible/non-existent service whether in-store or contacting by phone. I've been there twice and had to basically beg someone to assist me. As a new dog mom, they could've cleaned up as I needed everything. I walked out with only the absolute needed item. I just called now and was put on hold and then disconnected...called back and just rang. You don't want my business, fine, there are plenty who do. read more

What happened to my previous post? I gave the Clark location only 1 star because of the horribly rude employee that yelled at my son for using a step stool that was left out in front of the reptiles. Did I mention that she yanked it away from under him? When I told her that I complained about her behavior, her response was less than apologetic. In fact, she blamed me for allowing him to hold onto my hand while he used the step stool safely. I will never return to this location due to the horrible treatment of my family by the staff member. I hope she has been fired by now! read more

Horrible grooming service! They do absolutely nothing from what they claim to do. Took both my schnauzers there and they were always nervous to stay. The groomers would put a thin leash around their neck and pull them in order to get them inside. You'll find yourself waiting for HOURS which most likely means your pet will be in a cage for longer than the grooming will even take. They DON'T clean ears... no matter what they say. Don't believe them if they claim they do because they don't. Every time I went they said they did and my dogs ended up with ear infections and when I brought it up, they said they don't clean ears at all. What the f**k was I even paying for then if I asked for ears too?! And don't even get me started on the fact that they don't even brush teeth. Lastly, they do a horrible cutting job. They come out with rough fur and their coat is only shiny for about a day and then it's as if nothing was even done. read more

I went to Petco to get my dog groomed...when i took him home his paw started bleeding. My family and i did not know why until we saw his nails. Petco cut his nail past the red part and now my dog is in pain. And when we called they didnt even apologize they just said, "Put it in sugar." The nerve!! This location is super convenient for me as I have a 1 year old german shepherd who doesn't let me clip her nails. I started bringing her every other week a couple months ago for their mini makeover which is listed as nail clipping, ear & teeth cleaning, and 15 minute brush out. The first issue I have is that a few weeks ago I asked them to do the extra 15 minutes of brushing (it's an add-on on their menu). 25 minutes after I dropped her I got a call that she was done. I'm not sure how they managed to brush her for 30 full minutes, clip her nails, brush her teeth, and clean her ears in 25 minutes, but they did. Fine. Whatever, it's convenient, the girls I've dealt with seemed nice so whatever. Today I called at 12:54pm to inquire about their hours and to ask what's the latest I could bring my girl in for the mini makeover and extra brushing. The girl on the phone told me as long as I have her in by 7:30 they'd be able to take care of us. Perfect. After running around with work and daycare and dinner and laundry and airports and parkway traffic and everything I managed to get her there at 7:30. The girl at the desk tells me that the groomer can't see us. Wonderful. I was clearly annoyed and yelled even though I know it's not her fault but I held up my end of the deal. I showed up when I was supposed to. She told me she wished the girl I talked to earlier talked to the groomer to make sure they could see us. I think it's super rude for whoever I talked to on the phone to not do their part in this social interaction because people are busy! Sooo inconsiderate and rude. The tipping point for me to write this review was when another customer walked by asking if they could get their dogs nails clipped and the girl who was telling me they couldn't make my dogs services work tonight told him that they could probably fit him in in a half hour. Mind blowing. Anyways. There are a lot of options in this area for what you guys do. read more

I was so happy when this store opened, then I went there. Petsmart has better prices and selection, and their staff is so much nicer. Petco can't seem to hang onto the nice staff and after dealing with management, I can see why. If management is that rude to customers, I can't imagine how they treat employees. There's an overall feeling of disorganization throughout the store. I'm especially sick of stock being dumped on pallets wherever they feel like leaving it. The only reason I went (past tense) is that Petsmart doesn't sell Canidae food, I just found Pet Supplies Plus in Garwood and not only do they sell Canidae, it's so much cheaper than Petco. Petco has been promoting that their large bags of dog food are now cheaper, what they fail to mention is that their small bags are now more expensive, nice way to rip off customers. Petco 4 lb. Canidae is now $21.99 (up from $17.99) for my puppy's favorite flavor, Pet Supplies Plus has the identical bag for $14.99. Petco can suck it! read more
