I was on my way back home and needed to stop off to get some items to restock at home and that included items for my cat. Petco has been a hit or miss type of establishment for me lately. And in this review I will tell you why. A few years back I had purchased a self cleaning litterbox for my cat and it has worked wonderfully. It is so easy to use and my cat seems to appreciate the lack of need to remind me to clean it so often. Everything was going so smoothly until recently. It was at this location that I realized that I am running out of luck for this litterbox. The company that made it has decided to discontinue it. Not only the litterbox itself, but all the items that are a necessity to continue using the litterbox. I.e., waste receptacles and carbon filters. I went right to the litterbox section only to find that nothing by the company exists in the store anymore. The one thing about this litterbox was that it was basically sold exclusively at Petco, or you could go online in hopes to find it on Amazon or their website. Not the case anymore. I even rummaged through their small clearance section in hopes to find anything that remained in store, no luck. At that point I was ready to leave. No more litterboxes, litter, waste receptacles, or carbon filters. Feel like I'm being forced to purchase a newer self-cleaning litterbox at this point. Very disappointed. Picked up a bag of hermit crab sand. The bag had a hole in it and approximately 1/4 -1/2 of the bag spilled. They still made me buy the bag. They put it in a brown paper bag and I had to pay full price for the bag. I am very upset with this customer service. Petsmart would have been the better choice, and will be my forever choice. I absolutely LOVE this location! I have always loved animals and have enjoyed having dogs and cats and salt water fish, etc.... I'm always in a petco where ever I live. Some times service is ok, good, bad.... this location is outstanding. My partner and I love building salt water tanks and have had such a great time interacting with everyone within the store! Anastasia, Trevor, Aries, Alex, are just to name a few who have gone above and beyond with educating, assisting and help to order the fish I desire to have in my tank. The tanks are so well maintained and the aquatic team is so knowledgeable, friendly and chill. It's such a good time going into this store and I always leave with something. The entire store is clean, well maintained, smiling faces across the board! Not only is this a great sign of genuine animal lovers working at this location but it is a direct reflection of its impeccable Management team. Working with them has been so easy, stress free, educational and fun. I'm so happy I have found a petco so close to my home that I can literally stop in every day and smile. A week ago my sister got two parakeets from Petco only for them to die a couple of days later on her birthday. When we brought back in the birds to ask what happened and what went wrong an employee told us that they very recently got these birds and that they were probably too young to be sold. Why is Petco selling birds that are too young resulting it their certain death. Not to mention the employees insinuated that the new birds they just received were not even quarantined and were just thrown into the same cage with the rest of the parakeets to be sold. After doing some research I found that Petco seems to have a reputation for selling sick animals or animals that are too young to be sold. Way more than other chain pet stores like Petsmart or Pet Supplies Plus. Why is it that Petco treats their animals so horribly? Way more than other pet stores? I know it's not all Pet Stores that have this problem and much as Petco does, so I don't want to hear that all Pet Stores are like this since the evidence online tells a very different story. read more

While Petco has a 48 hour cancellation policy for grooming, they canceled my dogs groom appt with less than 24 hours notice and made no effort to reschedule her. Then, after not hearing from Petco for two weeks, I received a call from them at 11:24am offering me a 12:00pm appointment because I was first on the waitlist. They waited TWO WEEKS to address the issue and then only provided 36 minutes of advanced notice for a new appointment. Came here the other day with my boyfriend to buy some more fish for our tank, a tank that didn't have any fish yet but was definitely ready. We've done other tanks in the past and have had success. We told the guy in the fish section the fish that we wanted, then he asked us a couple of questions then continued to tell us that our tank is a "death sentence" because of what we used to treat our tank (which is not true at all, we both have been doing tanks for years). We decided at that point to just leave. As we were walking away, he told us that he wouldn't lose sleep over us leaving and began doing a mocking cry noise. I also heard him laughing. I was very confused because although my boyfriend & I were obviously upset/mad that he wasn't going to give us the fish, we never said anything even remotely rude to him, we just walked away. I was very disappointed because I used to love this petco & their fish selection, but I will no longer be getting my fish or any of the other supplies I need from here. Picking the number of stars was awkward. Prepare for a story. We ordered a product online for in-store pickup on Tuesday last week (two days before Thanksgiving). We get a confirmation that the product is in stock and we would get another email when it was ready for pickup. Later we get an email that they don't actually have it in stock and will call us to make other arrangements. No call by late afternoon Wednesday so I call corporate customer service who are wonderful, fantastic, five stars. They have the product in their warehouse. They apologize profusely for the mix-up. They ship it to us, two-day delivery, no delivery charge. Great. Today, with the product in my hands and in fact while I am assembling the local store calls to inform me that my order has been cancelled and they would be happy to help me special order. *sigh* Really? I'll point out that the order number is the same throughout the process so there is no excuse for them not knowing that corporate has already dealt with the problem. Five stars to corporate. We like this Petco, they are helpful most of the time, but I think it depends when you go. They have a nice selection of fish for my toddler son. They have fresh water and saltwater. They have a decent selection of foods and toys for all your pets as well. Last time we were there they had ferrets, cats, gerbils, lizards, snakes, a spider, geckos, rats, hermit crabs... They also have a grooming center attached to the location and I also believe they hold classes such as doggie obiedience. read more

This may be bias because my sister is the manager here but I love this Petco. We switched from Petsmart because of her working here. She knows everything and she got me all set up with great cat litter and a few products to stop my cats from going outside their litter boxes. We drive all the way from Waldorf. Great store! I've been taking my 13 year old cockapoo-rescue to Petco on Forest Dr. in Annapolis for about three years now and I'm long overdue in writing a review. All around EXCELLENT is the best description I can give to the groomers. Their customer service with the "mom's" dropping off for grooming is above and beyond excellent, and the facility is neat and clean. While all the groomers are well trained and do a great job, my Gracie favors Meghan. Gracie was born with a lame leg/hip and age/arthritis has taken its toll on the other hip now. They have all the info on record so they take special care of her needs. They call 10 minutes before they're finished with her so I don't arrive too early and get Gracie excited. My poor little girl desperately needed a grooming. I just couldn't get an appointment in my area to mesh with my crazy schedule. I knew I was going to be in Annapolis one Sunday visiting family, so decided to call this location for an appointment. Fortunately, they had one appointment left! It was meant to be. I was pretty specific about what I wanted in terms of cut concept. And they were super accommodating and helpful when discussing length and cut. I'm always a little anxious when dropping off my pup. She hates the groomers and always gives me those "Mom, Help Me!" eyes when I leave. But everyone here was so sweet and made her feel comfortable before taking her back. They called me a few hours later to let me know my girl was ready. Upon walking in, they had my invoice ready. I paid upfront and when I got back to get my pup, she was already out and ready to go. She was so cute! They did a fabulous job with her and really did everything I asked. I checked her for nicks and cuts, and she was in great shape. She didn't seem to nervous or anxious which means they made her feel comfortable the entire time. This is one of the best Petco grooming salons I have been to, and will definitely bring her back if I am in the neighborhood. Prices are standard to other locations in Maryland. Only suggestion is to have cash on hand for tips, they don't offer cash back with their debit transactions. read more

I have been bringing my dog to Petco for grooming once monthly for the past year or two and have been pleased with the service and prices. Several months ago the option to book appointments online became unavailable so I've been calling the last couple times. Being able to reach grooming can be challenging. David, the employee in charge of the aquatic animals at Petco, was fantastic. I was in search of the perfect birthday gift for a 7 yr old. He took the time to show me all the different types of aquariums for the African dwarf frogs. He was extremely informative about their habitat and how to care for them, which I knew nothing about. Since I was in a hurry to get to a bday party, he offered to set the aquarium up for me. So, I paid for everything at the cashier and came back a couple of hours later to pick up the frogs. The aquarium was amazing, he set up the rocks, the wooden logs, and the filter system. He even carried it out to my car for me. Grooming 5 stars! I live next door to this store. I visit at least once a month. They are almost like family to me an my pets. If you have any questions on fish/reptiles then Dave is your guy. Last year my nephew's 2yr old guinea pig came down with a sickness. Tonya helped him and my sister through the process of getting it treated. It was low on some key nutrients that it needed. They have a new Positive Dog Trainer that I have yet to meet. I watched in on one of her classes and she seems knowledgeable and pleasant. The main reason for my many visits to PETCO is to get my poodle and my sisters yorkie groomed. Katrina does a great job and treats them as her own. She even sent us both a holiday card thanking us! Besides her grooming experience she also has medical knowledge and volunteers at shelters rehabilitating aggressive animals. As for any negative posts on this location. I have to say there is a difference between mom and pop vs. big box chains. PETCO came before another big chain and their motto has always been to knowledge owners ensuring happy and healthy pets. read more

I made an appointment to have my dog groomed and was all set until they left me a voicemail saying they had to cancel. I spent the next 2 days to reach them to possibly reschedule. Apparently when you are directed to the grooming department, they only page the groomers because the phone doesn't ring. I was on hold for way too long on numerous occasions. I finally reached someone, but they were unable to reschedule me because they don't do zoom grooms on the weekends. I don't understand why such a policy exists because it's not like it requires a specialist or magical clippers. I called them early in the week so I could get an open slot. The groomer did a great job on my Chihuahua's nail trimming. She's a biter and had to be muzzled. Very squirmy and hard to work with. $10, and got it done fast. I also used their vaccination service which was a lot faster, more affordable then making a veterinarian appointment. I have not been to this location in a while, mainly because the first (and subsequently, last) time I shopped there, it was FILTHY - so much so that I didn't want to touch anything. It was unbearable. The windows and floors were grimy. My fiancee was with me and this was one of his first experiences with a pet store (he didn't grow up with pets); and the stench was so bad, I had to reassure him that all pet stores are not the same. There is nothing inviting here, and the minute I get in I just want to get out. A pet store should be fun, attractive and welcoming. This place is not. The staff, though nice, also seem a bit sad having to work in such a tired, lackluster environment. I don't blame them. Even items on sale are expensive. Pet ownership is not cheap. Our pup is always excited to see her wonderful ladies in the grooming department. They spoil our old girl and are so soft with her. She comes out smelling so much better than whatever she rolled in! Not great service or atmosphere. I went to do some shopping for my fish tank and get a couple more fish to add to my community. Very poor selection and it was difficult to find someone to help out. Conditions were very poor. Looked down as I was having my fish bagged up and saw a mouse trap. Not just a mouse trap. But a mouse trap with a dead mouse in it. Right in the middle of the store. I was there a few months ago looking at Russian tortoises. The staff was telling me about the tortoises and got me interested in buying one. We did and we love our male Tortoise. Well. After tons of research I learned that our male is in fact a female. They also told me that females are smaller than males, which is untrue. Recently we went back to get another one. The staff told me that they had one female left. Well. Again, after tons of research, the one they have left is a small male. Be careful adopting a kitten here. Our adopted kitty came with ringworm, which our other pets picked up. It was a huge pain trying to get rid of (washing sheets and deep cleaning everyday). Our vet was reluctant to prescribe the medicine for ringworm since it's hard on the pet's system. However, they did prescribe it for the kitten ($80). Amy & the grooming staff are amazing! My dogs get so excited at the mention of getting a bath. They are welcomed & treated like family. The are very knowledgeable, They have helped us with grooming as well as suggestions on skin products, food, treats, etc. We have been going there bi-weekly for 9 years with our oldest pup & brought them our new puppy less than a year ago.
