The fish area is much bigger and seems well maintained, so I thought, why not? But don't let the looks fool you, their fish are riddled with disease!! The fish that was purchased seemed healthy at first, but brought a very nasty case of Ich into my aquarium with it! The ich was so aggressive NOTHING helped (medication, heat, salt, etc.) the ich took out one of my fish and the second one (a very expensive one) is fighting for its life. read more

Do not support this business. Manager and owner Dan Linck are aware of the conditions of the tanks, which are clearly neglected. The fish tanks are covered in algae that would take more than a few months to grow, and tanks full of dead fish that would only take minutes to clear out. I spoke to the manager and the owner and they were very aware of the conditions of the tanks and just didn't care. Dan claimed that they were short staffed. At most there were 3-4 cars in the parking lot at a time. I saw there were 4 employees not including manager and owner. I observed manager and an employee wandering and chatting. Another employee was walking through the fish area with her hands in her pockets. All my concerns were shrugged off. I offered to rescue a tank of fish, we agreed on a price then when I mentioned my disgust to some fellow shoppers they refused to sell me the fish. Owner Dan used any excuse as to why the tanks were in the condition they were, animal health and safety are definitely not top priority. read more

Great store that's not a major chain like Petsmart or Petco. You won't see all the fancy colors and extra Sales & Marketing spend -- but a decent store where you can find what you need. They do a fair job of organizing departments. Cat/Dog/Fish/Reptile pretty easy to navigate. The staff is usually knowledgeable and helpful. They have a great variety of "better" foods, more holistic stuff. Check them out! read more

they absolutely abuse their animals. it is so disgusting in there. the reptiles are almost always found dead in the enclosures. the bird room smells like poop and they don't even clean the cages they are in. i had to tell a worker there two dead glass frogs were in the water bowl. she let me take a picture of it in her hand. found out a few days later she got FIRED!!! ridiculous. i hope this place closes down. UPDATE: went in to get some live feeder mice because it's the only place in milwaukee with feeders and i watched a mouse eat a dead one, and saw a half dead one. luckily i got the half dead one for free. this place is disgusting. read more

Three stars because they are more attentive and knowledgeable than the store on 108th. I rarely buy any pet related items here unless absolutely necessary (read: in this area of town running multiple errands anyway). This was an ok pet store, in my eyes, until I went into the fish room one day and saw fish with I heart U "tattoos" on their sides! This was right around Valentine's Day. I noticed something similar around St. Patrick's Day and, at Easter, the fish were dyed pastel colors. This was years ago, so I don't know if they still sell fish like that, as I don't often shop here, but what a disappointment! I eat meat, I'm anti-PETA, but I am against animal cruelty, especially when it makes no sense, which this absolutely doesn't. Tattooing fish? Seriously? I've always found the workers to be friendly and helpful, I've never noticed any obvious mistreatment of the animals they keep and sell here, so maybe they've fixed the problems other reviewers have noted. I'm a retired man who is looking for a part time job in the pet industry. I went to pet world to apply, asked a few question about a job. Now I have 25 years in the business, I was a member of the Milwaukee Aquarium Society for 10 years, knowing how to keep, raise and breed tropical fish. Plus I have been raising tropical fish for 40 years (I'm only 52 years old). When I was a kid my father bought 2 ducklings to which I raised. 26 years ago I bought my home. I rescued a green wing macaw and have found a love for birds. My friends knew I was interested in birds, and one new of a blue front amazon that was unwanted because their children taught it to swear. I couldn't pass up the opportunity, for $100 I got the healthy bird with cage. I then was interested in breeding parrots(which no one should do unless it's a rare bird, because there are so many birds that need adoption, get your bird from a SANCTUARY) anyway I started with 2 pairs of fiches which turned into 30 something, I sold them to local pet shops. Then I went into parakeets, 2 pair turned into 80 sold them, started again with 4 cockatiels, got 60. I DO NOT recommend that you breed birds, any one who is interested., I can tell you that you won't make any money. It's a lot of commitment and a lot of WORK. I highly recommend volunteering at a sanctuary. there are many around. Look on the internet Anyway Pet World said everyone starts out as a cashier. What a joke. with my experience and not needing to be paid much more than min wage. They wouldn't let me work in the bird/fish department. They wanted me to be a cashier and stock boy. Stocking heavy bags of dog food and litter. From reading other peoples reviews I would have to say Pet World sure knows how to screw themselves. OH, Did I mention I worked for Pet World 25 years ago as a fish department manager. read more

Abused animals everywhere!! The poor reptiles are starved. I asked about the anoles and they said they feed every 3 days. That's not enough for them for one, and two, there are way too many in there for them to even be fed. I watched a girl feed them and then get told to go home early. I have never been so disappointed in a business. The owner, Dan, needs to step up and take care of the animals he sells. The birds too are also being neglected. Feathers everywhere. Nails and beaks are way too long. Someone even told me I can't take pictures of the nails and beaks of the birds as I was trying to. Disgusting. Trying to cover the abuse. read more

I was there on 07-01-2021 to purchase a Parakeet and a Cage, I had to ask for some service at the front desk which he called for someone to go to the Bird department. I went back to wait on someone and as I turned around to see if someone was coming, two young ladies just walked away from the door, I went outside of the little room of where the birds were located and the ladies kept on walking. So I just left out the store and made phone call complaint. No, will never go back there again, like I told the young lady on the phone I was going to spend some money on what I wanted, but that's not the point. Great service is what counts no matter what... Huge selection of food, toys and accessories for any type of pet. Prices are generally pretty reasonable unless you have a more rare type of pet that requires special things. I DO NOT like the fact that they sell animals. I just don't feel it's a good thing for the animals or the people. Too many hasty decisions and they do not guarantee their animals once they leave the store. Less of animal selling in pet shops could equal better quality of life for many. read more

Things I love about Pet World- It's probably my favorite pet store in the area. Way more variety than Petco/PetSmart. The variety isn't just for cats and dogs. The carry products for rodents, birds, reptiles, fish, etc. If the cost isn't comparable to their competitors, it's cheaper. They have an awesome selection of fish. I love walking through the department and seeing all the different fresh water and salt water varieties. I usually walk in here looking for something special for my dogs, and I rarely leave empty handed. Things I hate about Pet World- This place looks exactly the same now as when I walked in their for the first time. When I walked into this place for the first time, the Video Game Exchange was right down the street (Yelpers under 30 won't even know that reference). While I enjoy nostalgia, this isn't the good kind of nostalgia. This place needs a few things replaced and a few coats of paint. Things look dirty, paint is peeling, heck, even some of the wood fish tank covers are warped. No one is going to want to shop here if it looks rundown. A couple more employees to cover questions on the floor wouldn't hurt. This is still definitely my place to get anything pet-related, especially anything hard to find. read more

After my trip here today, I feel like I can give Pet World its final fifth star. They've made some serious strides fixing the gravel issue in their axolotl tank; they've replaced the dangerous stones with some fine black aquarium sand. Way to go, Pet World! There are a few errant stones in the tank that need to be cleaned out yet (and I get it, it's hard to clear gravel out of a tank), but they've made a serious improvement and I feel like that should be noted. So, Pet World, thank you for addressing that complaint. I still stand by everything else I said in my last review, so I don't see any reason to rehash that at this point. read more

I have never witnessed employees before who were so rude. First while walking through the store an employee walking with a clipboard almost knocked me over. I was so startled I said "excuse me". He did not say a thing and keep walking. When I went to checkout there was only one person at a register. I went there and it said closed. She was sorting something. I asked where I could check out. She uttered "over there". She seemed so annoyed that I bothered her. The only other thing she said was the total and nothing else. I paid and left. I contacted the store through there website and explained what happened. They never even bothered to contact me. I have 3 pets and made most of my purchases there. My Grand-daughter works for pet world warehouse hopefully not much longer. The managers are not nice. My Grand-daughter was sworn at,at meeting as was all the staff below the managers. Managers think it's OK to swear using the F word degrading these young kids. My Grand-daughter comes home distraught. Not wanting to say anything. Most disturbing is she said that when the owner Dan comes in they all act like they like him, but when he walks out the door they say really nasty stuff behind his back. I stopped in recently in the Greenfield location to find a travel cage for my large bird. Their conures are in dreadful condition. Their cages, in addition to being too small, have the sides caked with feces and their water is very dirty. The perches for them are parakeet perches and are too small to fit their feet. This leads to foot discomfort and wounds, as well as issues with balancing. One of the green-cheek conures was definitely having issues with his foot and with balancing on his skinny perches. The sad macaw and cockatoo didn't even have enough room to spread their wings. I was completely distressed at viewing the conditions in their bird room. My heart went out to those poor birds. I surely did not make a purchase. They claim that their birds are hand-raised with loving care so they will be sociable - and then they ruin it by how they are mistreated. read more

This place has great prices (beats chewy.com) and whenever I have a question the staff is always courteous and helpful (regardless of how young they are). I will never buy from this store again. Bought some fish that died and killed a few other of my fish I had in the tank. The problem I have is only getting a 48hr guarantee when other pet stores give 1 to 2 weeks. The next issue I have is I contacted them through their website, and they don't even care to respond back to me. Shows how much they really care about their customers. Stopped in last week for a few dog toys and food. Overall prices are OK, the help is fairly knowledgeable. I like the fish selection as well. I would have given 4 stars, but I took 2 stars off for the tiny cages they keep kittens in-- so small they have to play in their litter boxes! I've seen them sleeping in their litterboxes. There's no room in them. It's unhealthy & unhygienic, something that goes against a cat's natural impulses if they have the room. I do not agree with PETA but I have to consider boycotting the place because of that, especially when today I read a previous review from 2015 when they refused to allow a customer to buy a bigger cage for the kittens saying they didn't have room!!! It's a huge store, there's plenty of room If that is the problem, they should stop selling kittens. That person called repeatedly about this & was threatened with harrassment. What I like about the store is it's close to my home, good selection of products, and they carry the dog food I like. They used to be cheaper but now they cost more than PetSmart for my dogfood, so I only go here for that when I'm short on time, which is more often than I want. I had to return something there once and it was ridiculous how long it took and how many challenges the employees had in the system to get my money back--purposeful system the company uses to keep you from returning things again. Also it's only a 7 day period for refunds, which I was within but I still had to wait a very long time while they processed it. Rather than helping any customers they stood behind the counter making rude comments about the customers shopping in the store. I only come to this store because it is close but I will start to make the trip out to 76th st and take my business elsewhere. here's my problem with pet world, i went into the place yesterday to look at their selection and after seeing they didn't carry my brands of cat food and litter i was headed out the door. as i was leaving i saw these two small kittens in a bird cage big enough to only be able to fit a litter box and a bowl for water. i saw the kittens playing around in the litter box that contained feces and urine and after noticing this i went up to the counter and asked if the kittens were going to stay in that small of a cage. the guy up front said yes that unfortunately there isn't anything they can do to stop them from playing in their litter box. he even said that they couldn't allow the kittens to have blankets due to health reasons. after he said this i asked "so it isn't a health issue that they're forced to play in their litter box because the cage isn't big enough to fit them?" the guy didn't really know how to answer so i just said that it isn't sanitary for the animals to be kept like that&they should really do something about it. after not being able to sleep due to this and wanting to help out, i called pet world to see if i bought a cage from them if they would be able to use it so the cats could have more space. when i got on the phone with the manager erica, i let her know my concerns about the kittens being in an unsanitary environment, and she didn't seem to think anything of it. she said that sometimes cats play in the litter box. but if you know real house cats who have room to run around, cats don't just opt to play in their litter boxes. i asked her if a child was housed in similar conditions if that'd be considered okay and she completely avoided my question and eventually hung up on me because she wouldn't answer my question&asked if she could help me with anything and i kept saying yes you could answer my question and stop avoiding it. called back a second time to speak with her and she hung up so i called a third time to ask for a person higher up and once i got to him i asked him if he thought how the kittens were caged was okay and he said "yes they are in fine conditions" i asked if i bought a cage&set it up if they could use it and he said there isn't enough space in that giant store to put a bigger cage in there for the cats so they'd be out of their litter box. he proceeded to laugh at me because i was upset that one on in this pet store was concerned about the environment of their cats. he asked me for my name and number because he wanted to talk to me in person. i said no if you want to talk to me in person i'll come down there to talk. he said no, told me if i contacted them again they'll trace the call as well as sue me for harassment. doesn't seem to me like they care for their animals and don't seem professional if they won't do something about a concern that a customer has, but instead laugh and say it's harassment. read more
